      Book Description

Here's new coverage of the three major theories for partnering families and communities with schools and how to put them into practice for children from birth to age eight. The authors fully discuss Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory, the contextualist theory, and the family systems theory. Early childhood education students will discover the connection between these important theories and family support programs, parental involvement in early education, national guidelines, and other strategies for forming partnerships. This higher level, more theoretical text builds on students' prior knowledge of early childhood education practices.

          Book Description

Strategy & Business Planning of Privately Held Companies is, in the words of one executive reader "designed to be a kind of quick reference source of distilled wisdom for businesses. The style is user friendly; lots of charts, checklists, anecdotal illustrations and diagrams. Perhaps the best praise I can give it is that I wish I had it while I did my own MBA."

The first 25% of the book presents an integrated conceptual framework. The book explains an eight step planning process and introduces the five basic corporate Positions: Get Out, Turnaround, Tune Up, Status Quo and Go For Gold. The reader is able to identify his or her company's Position and select feasible strategic options. The book equips the reader to use six Paradigms: the Accountant's, Microeconomic, Marketing, Operations, Organizational Behavior and Managerial Preferences Paradigms. There are many examples of the five Principles: Focus, Ethics, Excellence, Frugality and Urgency.

The middle two-thirds of the book emphasizes the practical aspects of examining, assessing and documenting corporate perfomance, strategic decisions and implementation plans. There are over two hundred tables, diagrams, examples, worksheet and checklists to help shareholders and executives plan and achieve superior financial and competitive performance. The book concludes with detailed instructions on writing strategic, business and financing plans.

                              Book Description

The investment and securities industry is rebounding from the dismal markets of the early 2000s. Improved corporate profits, low interest rates and efforts to improve corporate governance have led the way, despite recent scandals in the mutual funds industry. Meanwhile, the investment industry is increasingly a global business. This is partly due to the needs of multinational corporations to list their stocks or issue debt in more than one nation. For example, ADRs (American Depository Receipts) are increasingly popular instruments. Cross-border investments and acquisitions continue at a rapid pace. Discount brokerages are enjoying improved levels of trading, while investment banks are developing new ways to create lucrative fees. This carefully-researched book (which includes a database of leading companies on CD-ROM) is a complete investments, securities and asset management market research and business intelligence tool-- everything you need to know about the business of investments, including: 1)Investment banking, 2)Stock brokers, 3 )Discount brokers, 4)Online brokers, 5)Significant trends in financial information technologies, 6)Asset management, 7)Stock ownership by individuals and households, 8)401(k)s and pension plans, 9)Mutual funds, 10)ETFs (Exchange traded funds), 11)ECNs (Electronic Communication Networks), 12 ) Developments at the NYSE and other exchanges. The book includes a complete chapter of vital industry statistics, an industry glossary, a complete list of industry contacts such as industry associations and government agencies, and our in-depth profiles of more than 300 leading firms in the investment and asset management business. A CD-ROM database of these firms is included with the book.

                              5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2005-02-10

This is an excellent book for hotel and travel managers as it contains tons of useful information and practical advice. Wheather you have an inhouse webmaster or are outsourcing the task (like I do), it will help you market better on the internet. I read it along with Heads In Beds-Hospitality and Tourism Marketing, and have improved my marketing activities ever since. Now I'm annoying my colleagues by telling them to read both. But those who did were grateful. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars well worth every cent I paid.......2004-07-11

Our family is opening a modest Inn in Bangkok, Thailand later this year, so I decided to purchase this book after reading all the rave reviews. I started browsing through this book today and boy am I impressed! The title of this book seemed rather generic at first, but it more or less covered everything I wanted to know about how to market for my inn on the WWW.

Topics that were of most interest to me included: increasing hits for your site on popular search engines, tips for creating great websites, how to issue press releases and how to get listed on pertinent directories.

The author obviously put in ALOT of research before putting pen to paper to write this book. The recommended websites alone (at the end of each chapter) are well worth the money spent. My only complaint is that many of the recommended links are outdated or broken - but this is by no means the fault of the author... A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic for all Travel Related Businesses.......2004-03-31

I am in the process of starting my own specialized tour business and brought this book out of hibernation for review. I had purchased it a couple years ago and it has just been marking time.

The author has done a superb job of guiding someone through the minefield of travel marketing --- and her advice still holds up to date.

I'm sure someone can find fault with not being 'up to date' since 9/11, yet this is flawless strategy that one only needs to update by adding a Google Adwords program, and possibly some eBay listings.

Reminds me of buying a mint 5 year old Porsche, which still offers all the amenities, yet one could upgrade the sound system if you wanted.

If you are going into the travel business, or almost any business for that matter, this is a classic that you can use and adjust accordingly to fit your niche.

                              Well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars One for the Bookshelf.......2002-02-13

Marketing on the Internet can lead you down a series of complicated and confusing paths. But, if you're in charge of marketing a destination or lodging, gain the upper hand by reading Susan Sweeney's "Internet Marketing for Your Tourism Business."

As soon as you begin thumbing through this 562-page resource, you¹ll want to begin highlighting important passages. Whatever you do, resist that temptation. Why? Because if you start highlighting the important stuff, the entire book will be yellow before you know it!

Sweeney discusses basic marketing principles, web site design, the importance of search engine placement, targeting tourism newsgroups and mailing lists, building web site traffic, using e-mail effectively, developing link strategies with complementary businesses, advertising on line, accepting online reservations, maximizing media relations, and determining if webcasting is right for your site.

I love the fact that Sweeney uses real world examples from the travel industry to illustrate her points throughout the book. You¹ll learn how the Expedias of this world made it to the top.

"Internet Marketing for Your Tourism Business" is packed with tips that any tourism professional can use to enhance his or her company's presence on the web. Even if you don't have time to read the book thoroughly, it's worth the cover price for the massive Appendix. It¹s got a great section defining web terms, as well as a comprehensive list of Internet marketing resources.

                                  Book Description

'The Caterer and Hotelkeeper Guide to the Internet' is a hands-on guide to establishing your business on the Internet.

As the Internet becomes an essential part of everyday life, it is becoming more obvious that hoteliers today must make a mark with their own sites, or miss out. David Grant, co-author of this text, runs his own hotel and website constultancy in Cornwall. He set up a site to promote his hotel in 1997 and from his and other experiences estimates that it can add at least £10,000 a year to the average hotel's turnover - a considerable return on investment!

'The Caterer and Hotelkeeper Guide to the Internet' requires no in-depth or technical computer knowledge, and will guide you through all the basics about the Internet, looking at:

                                  * getting your site constructed: doing it yourself, or via an agency
                                  * what makes a good or bad site: essential design concepts
                                  * how to get your site found
                                  * how to take bookings online
                                  * what it will cost you

what can the Internet do for your business? How to add more to your turnover!
creating your own site, or getting someone to do the work for you

                                    Book Description

Technology is ubiquitous and hardly anything works without it. There have been many innovations but one of the most important inventions of our time was the Internet. There is no doubt that the Internet had the greatest impact on our lives. The Internet has changed the way we communicate with each other, look for information, entertain ourselves and the way we do business. The Internet has come a long way and still evolves constantly and as fast as no other medium since 1966. Meanwhile, travel and tourism has become one of the fastest growing sectors. The growth of air travel after World War II favoured mass transportation to every destination of the world. Air travel is considered to be more comfortable and of course faster. The main objective of this book is to investigate the influence of the Internet on the travel sector and to examine the role of travel agents in this context. A critical review of the relevant literature was carried out including a questionnaire that was handed out to 50 respondents. The Internet is already part of our society and life as well as business is hard to imagine without it although it is a very young invention. As there is very little academic research on the topic, this book provides an insight on how the Internet has affected the way travel is distributed and what impacts it might have on travel agents in particular.
