Book Description
This Encyclopedia provides scholarly information on all aspects of Educational Technology. Educational Technology is seen as a problem-solving process, concerning most aspects of teaching and learning through media and technology, in the context of education and training. Problems may arise in subdomains of education, such as curriculum, instruction and learning, methods and media, or organization and management. In developing solutions, use will be made of many technologies in the narrower meaning of the word - educational aspects and applications of information and communication technology. A variety of education and institutional settings are presented as they determine potential solutions.
Entries are organized in five broad categories: (1) educational technology as a concept and as a field and how it is disseminated in different ways; (2) functions such as needs assessment, design, media production, evaluation, diffusion and implementation, as the design process is highly dependent on good organization, it also includes entries on management of educational technology and on resources frequently used by educational technologists; (3) strategies, techniques, materials and devices to deliver technology; (4) applications of educational technology in institutional settings; and (5) emerging issues in the field.
This volume includes entries from the highly acclaimed
International Encyclopedia of Education, 2nd Edition (described by
Choice as being
"a premier resource when judged on virtually every criteria applied to a reference work"). Given the dynamic nature of the field, many of these entries have been revised and updated, and a number of new entries have been commissioned, giving a more complete coverage of the domain of educational technology. New entries include: Computer-supported Design for Computer-aided Instruction, Computer-based Curriculum Development and Job Aids.

You've got a hot idea for a new dot-com, and you're itching to join the folks who regularly show up on CNBC and at the Lexus dealerships in Silicon Valley. But you also know your odds of big-time success are about as long as Bill Gates's position in MSFT. What do you do? John Nesheim, an adjunct professor at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, who has personally structured over $300 million in new-venture deals, lays out the step-by-step skinny in High Tech Startup. Incorporating some two dozen case studies spanning the technology spectrum, he presents info specific to this industry that will help you get from concept to IPO. It begins with a 14-phase schedule itemizing time requirements, necessary assistance, typical participants, major costs, main risks, and desired results for each step. It then details all the critical stages (i.e., forming the company, preparing the business plan, assembling the team, dealing with venture capitalists and other funding sources). Nesheim focuses on practical strategies that should certainly improve your chances, but don't start prepping for that on-air interview with Mark Haines just yet: Only six out of 1 million high-tech ideas, he notes, ever become successful companies that go public. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The phenomenal success of the initial public offerings (IPOs) of many new internet companies obscures the fact that fewer than six out of 1 million business plans submitted to venture capital firms will ever reach the IPO stage. Many fail, according to start-up expert John Nesheim, because the entrepreneurs did not have access to the invaluable lessons that come from studying the real-world venture experiences of successful companies. Now they do.
This revised and updated edition of Nesheim's underground Silicon Valley bestseller incorporates twenty-three case studies of successful start-ups, including tables of wealth showing how much money founders and investors realized from each venture. Acclaimed by entrepreneurs the world over, this practical handbook is filled with hard-to-find information and guidance covering every key phase of a start-up, from idea to IPO: how to create a winning business plan, how to value the firm, how venture capitalists work, how they make their money, where to find alternative sources of funding, how to select a good lawyer, and how to protect intellectual property. Nesheim aims to improve the odds of success for first-time high-tech entrepreneurs, and offers an insider's perspective from firsthand experience on one of the toughest challenges they face -- convincing venture capitalists or investment banks to provide financing.
This complete, classic reference tool is essential reading for first-time high-tech entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs already involved in a start-up who want to increase their chances of success to rise to the top.
Download Description
Make no mistake: even with all their potential for meteoric success, high tech ventures are synonymous with high risk. Fewer than one out of every 47,000 Internet business plans submitted to venture capital firms ever reach the initial public offering (IPO) stage. Many fail because the entrepreneurs did not have access to the invaluable lessons that come from studying the real-world venture experiences of successful companies.
Now they do. The book C-Cube Microsystems President Bill O'Meara calls "a must read for all high tech entrepreneurs" has all the hard-to-find information that start-ups need to rise to the top. High Tech Start Up presents a classic, step-by-step strategy for making a solid plan and securing multi-round financing. Author John Nesheim -- a premier start-up veteran, having single-handedly structured over $300 million in new venture deals -- provides more than twenty-three case studies that reveal how readers can modify their strategies to fit their particular objectives.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for entrepreneurs considering a start-up!.......2007-09-06
Book gives a good overview of the process, timeline, and who is involved. Great insight into what venture capitalists look for, equity ownership and dilution, and how to select key advisors (i.e., attorney, banker) on the start-up team. It is an eye-opener to help you know what to expect in terms of how long it will take to get established and the likelihood of being bought out or reaching IPO. Definitely recommend.
A course on entrepreneurship .......2007-05-15
The book is slightly dated and was published at the height of the tech bubble, but don't let that detract you from picking it up - `High Tech Startup' has volumes of invaluable advice. John Nesheim covers the entire lifespan of a startup: from finding an attorney to start the company, to picking an investment banker to do an IPO. Of course, the scope of the work also limits the amount of information, but it gives you enough to find what you're missing and to continue your research. The case studies and suggestions from seasoned CEO's were especially useful - experience is cheapest second hand, and there is plenty of it in this book. `High Tech Startup' is a business course I should have taken years ago (and most school don't offer), highly recommended.
Full of information.......2007-03-23
I enjoyed this book, in face I have taken a lot of the information and put it into our business plan for a new start up. Though the information is dated it still holds... At the end of the day, business is business.
We are using it as our bible, and I will come back in a few months and tell you how our efforts go.

O verwhelming Info.......2007-01-13
The book is so informative, it so hard to stop reading when the book is fun and full of ah ha and hmm. The author give a precise info on how the start-up company can obtain VC funding. Most of the reviewer are right about their comment on this book, it should be the bible of start-up company.
Start Up Business Bible.......2006-01-30
I lead the technology center for an up and coming online payment services company. To say that High Tech Start Up has been very helpful in our growth is truly an understatement. My boss lugs around his copy of the book and constantly quotes from it, calling it his bible. The book has guided him in positioning the company in the market accordingly and has helped him in making informed decisions. I would recommend the book to anyone wanting to carve a niche in the high tech industry.

Customer Reviews:
An informative and easy to read tool for the laymen........1998-07-28
With a special forward by Rodney Dangerfield and a comprehensive list of web resources,(everything from search engines to web presence providers)Vince Gelormine draws you a map on how to get started making money on the internet. Although you may find some of the suggested links dated ..for instance his reference to NCSA's What's New Page (NCSA's page still points you to Webcrawler's page) you'll find that these minor issues are few and far between. This book still provides invaluable information for the beginner in the e-commerce jungle. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
This book is not just another generic set of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) best practices with only general recommendations and advice: instead it's a unique cookbook that shows you how SOA applications are built using best practices that are proven in 10 real-world scenarios. The book consists of three sections. The first two sections will "inspire" you. They showcase real-life projects on BPEL-based integration and development of composite applications. You'll see that SOA is a reality today, learn what successful implementations are like, and how SOA can work for you right now. It will encourage you to take a plunge into the world of services and test-drive SOA yourself. If you are already in the middle of an SOA implementation, these sections will offer you fresh insight into your current approach, help you to deal with specific business challenges, and make sure what you do is in line with the best practice. The third section will "equip" you with BPEL techniques to build better SOA applications. These techniques represent the practical implementation of best practice, with code snippets ranging from development to administration of an SOA application. They are generic enough to be applied in any of your existing projects yet specific enough to enable you reap the full benefits from your SOA implementation.
Customer Reviews:
Best Practices for SOA Integration on the Money.......2006-11-17
The BPEL Cookbook is an excellent practical guide to real-world SOA integration issues. It is not a "Learn BPEL" book, but rather the next step once you learn how to develop in BPEL. It addresses various types of issues that one needs to consider when developing BPEL processes. Chapter 3, "Building the Service Value Chain", addresses the core of building a SOA architecture that the business process must be standardized and documented. While a couple of chapters are Oracle BPEL centric, the rest of the chapters address generic issues of any BPEL implementation. In particular, Reliable Messaging, Web Services Invocation Framework (WSIF), building dynamic BPEL processes, and centralizing logging and error handling. For those using Oracle BPEL, chapter 5 shows how to use the Worklist API to build a rich Internet application. And chapter 2 shows how to integrate PeopleSoft CRM with Oracle eBusiness Suite.
I'm completly disapponited.......2006-11-10
The book talks about BPEL in a way expecting that your a BPEL GURU, I brought this book to learn BPEL, not to hear how other people used it.
Jump Start your SOA development with Ora BPEL.......2006-10-10
I wish this book was release a few months before as it would have saved me a lot of time and effort, with its real life examples for BPEL process implementations its a great book to have for anyone who is a new or regular user of OraBPEL.
It is an excellent book for someone new to the Oracle BPEL as well as gives excellent tips/ideas to experienced users in areas of :
- Managing an Oracle BPEL Production environment
- Using BRE rules engine for rule segregation
- Building Dynamic BPEL processes
- and Enriching the workflow applications.
I would have also liked to see some usage tips for Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and BPEL integration to real time application reporting through BAM.
Overall a comprehensive BPEL book with great amount of experience "cooked" into it.
Useful Addition to developers bookshelf.......2006-10-05
This book, a collection of real world BPEL patterns is a must for any budding or experienced BPEL developer. My company are a software development company specialising in SOA solutions. We have deployed a number for successful SOA projects with BPEL, running on the Oracle BPEL engine, being the cornerstone technology on these projects. This book, along with associated tutorials, has been a key factor in achieving this success - giving us a headstart for some of the key patterns you will need in any BPEL project. It has saved us many days in our R&D lab by pointing us to the code we require for standard tasks required in our BPEL process - these patterns are an excellent addition to any BPEL teams developer standards and guidelines. The book is intuitive to follow, leading the developer you through cases with workable examples that you can build and deploy in your own environment.
All of the patterns in the book form a useful library of common BPEL scenarios. The pattern related to Dynamic Partner Links gave our development team a great hand in designing BPEL projects for production - on certain projects we use this extensively to give deployment options that are not suited to a web service directory.
The chapter on maintenance and management was invaluable for our Application Administrators. It is always easy to get a Proof of Concept BPEL process working in a lab environment, it is the issues faced when rolling this out across an enterprise that cause often time consuming resolution. This chapter gives many tips and leads you to understand the dehydration store for BPEL instances - a very good start point to build up reference documentation for any Application Administrator who intends to manage BPEL in a live environment.
Chapters on Business Rules (a technology that I feel is essential within SOA and within any BPEL solution) and on Reliable Processing give excellent introduction to the topics a developer will need to understand to build production standard BPEL.
The chapters on Rich Application UI and Building BPEL proc on the fly raises interesting ideas that have certainly triggered design innovations in our team. The WSIF chapter is very useful as a reference and includes many examples of techniques for what you will need within your toolkit.
Altogether an excellent addition to any developers bookshelf, but of particular necessity to anyone intending to use Oracle SOA tools to develop applications.
Very useful for the Architects who are architecting SOA solution using Oracle BPEL Process Manager.......2006-09-28
Many of our clients are migrating from traditional Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) to the standard based SOA. This book has ten real-world case studies, which helped me to architect the solutions. Sometimes I use this book as best practices of Oracle BPEL-PM .
I like this book because the approach is more real-life examples than theory. Developers with minimum experience in SOA world will be able to leverage this emerging technology very easily.
Even though this book is useful for anybody to understand SOA and BPEL, this is extra useful for the people who are using Oracle Fusion Middleware (BPEL Process Manager).

Book Description
Learn how to: § Select the best ERP software for your organization § Choose the most effective wrap around software to enhance the performance of an existing ERP system § Align software selection with business goals and objectives § Budget for the software and the hidden costs involved in its implementation At times a daring, maddening, and even frightening process, finding and implementing a suitable software package is never an easy task. The cost of the software package is often a fraction of the overall expense. Unless carefully selected, a major software package implementation can consume a considerable amount of your organization's time and energy. An ill-informed purchase can cost your organization it's customers, dollars, and reputation. Maximizing Business Performance through Software Packages: Best Practices for Justification, Selection, and Implementation explores the business challenges involved in justifying, selecting, and implementing software packages. It contains practical advice and insights on how to select "good fitting" software packages, how to justify them in terms of their ability to enable business process change or improvement, and most importantly, how to implement them successfully. Selecting and implementing enterprise architecture technology software solutions involves a large expenditure across all the resources of an organization. The process has become increasingly complex as business functions have become increasingly integrated. Maximizing Business Performance through Software Packages: Best Practices for Justification, Selection, and Implementation provides a definitive source that will help you select the solutions that best fit your business needs.

Very Good Cases in Systems Analysis and design.......2001-11-30
There is not much I can say about this book. The book speaks far better for itself than ever I could hope to. I congratulate the author. I had read lectures on Systems Analysis and Design to Graduate Students (not on informatics)and my reference book was this one. Obviously, authors applied their past experience to present a complex task in a very amenous and readable way. Of course, I will use it again in my next courses. Some years ago, I used several times in my courses, with good results, the book "Systems Analysis and Design. Best Practices" by the same authors.

Best Papers on a Best Practice.......2000-07-19
This is a handy book with a summary and compendium of papers on inspections. The books traces the industry experience with inspections as mirrored in the technical papers published on the subject.
For those interested in an important best practice, this is an invaluable resource that is complementary to the standard books on the subject. I am particularly interested in the inspection of natural language requirements documents and found the papers in this area valuable. This book belongs with Demarco and Lister's book, Software State of the Art : Selected Papers by Tom Demarco, Timothy Lister, on any Software Engineer's bookshelf.
