                          Book Description

Practical Business Statistics, 5/e was written in response to instructors not wanting a formula driven, mathematically encyclopedic book. The use of computer applications means some topics no longer require coverage in detail. This allows future managers to know how to use and understand statistics. The text does this by using examples with real data that relate to the functional areas of business such as finance, accounting, and marketing. It de-emphasizes the theoretical, and presents the material in a well-written, easy style designed to motivate students. The emphasis is on understanding and applications as opposed to mathematical precision and formula detail.

This book does a great job of teaching you how to do statistical computations using StatPad and MS Excel. But, it is not very good at describing fundamentals. It left students in my MBA program who haven't takin' stats for a long time lost. I understand it is generally used by business schools, particularly MBAs.

One thing this book has over any stats book that I've used is: a friggin' TON of practice questions. It will boggle your mind and, if you do them, you'll know stats like the back of your hand.

5 out of 5 stars Good and gentle introduction to statistics.......2006-04-05

Prof. Siegel's book is a great introductory text for business graduates with little prior exposure to statistics. The text covers many of the basic topics in statistics and ties them nicely to real world cases and problems.

The book starts with a description of the basic constructs of statistics - data sets, distributions, and variability. IT follows with an introduction to probability and covers random variables. The text continues to cover statistical inference, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. Finally the book gets to regression and time series analysis and demonstrates several applications of the techniques covered.

The book comes with a CD that contains lecture presentations (very useful), all the data sets in the books (saves you typing), and an excel add-on called StatPad that provides many useful statistical tools.

Overall I think that this text is a good choice for MBA students and business professionals with little background in statistics. It is very user-friendly and is well grounded in business.

This is not the best book on the subject. There are many other superior books to this one. I still keep it around as a descent reference on statistics, and occasionally get something out of it.

3 out of 5 stars The review of Practical Business Statistics.......2000-08-29

It's a very good book because of the way it divulges you into the real world. If you are interested in learning business and business statistics, what better place to learn it than the real world.

I had the privelege of taking an MBA level course from Andy Siegel. The style of the text reflects the simply, user-friendly way he communicates in class. Not having taken a stats class before, I was happy to find a professor who could take a dry, complex subject and make it interesting and relatively painless. More professors should use this text!

                          Book Description

From Chaos to Coherence explores a provocative and inspiring model of organizational and individual intelligence. Called Inner Quality Management (IQM), the model helps unravel the intricate relationship between the individual employee and the organization. The book looks at how organizational systems have adapted to modern day chaos, and the strain that this adaptation is having on the inner workings of an organization and it's people. The book proposes a new technology, grounded in science, for building people and organizations that respond gracefully to change, crisis, and challenge. It covers themes of coherence, leadership, self-management, authentic communication, emotional virus, organizational climate, the drain of overcare, male/female balance and quantum management. A book of tools, insights and common sense intelligence.

4 out of 5 stars Eye opening with bright ideas on personal management.......2003-09-24

Most editorial and Amazon reviews praised this book of its value on organisational management. To me, this is more a personal management book which I learnt some new ideas and revisited some present ones, all in a highly comprehensible, interesting and easy reading manner. Some points for your reference are:-

                          1) The heart is not just an organ for pumping blood, but with the second largest amount of neuron (the same type of cell for the functioning in our brain). We do have a lot of it in our digestion system as well, a possible explanation to our heart and gut feelings.

                          2) Stress affects our production of hormones and drains our energy. Extended period of stress leads to maladaptation and thus premature aging and health problems. I like the author's refering to the fish in the highly contaminated Hudson River.

                          3) The analogy of the natural frequency in nature (ref the resonance for string instructment) to the need for dynamic balance inside a human and thus an organisation for optimal performance.

In short, though I dont believe the approach prescribed by this book can help much to improve the culture of many big corps, I do regard this as a very good book and I do recommend this to any business person who still has the heart for improvement.

                          5 out of 5 stars I've Tried It -- It Works.......1999-04-15

Doc Childre and Bruce Cryer have identified a simple blueprint that I think will be the key to changing existing corporate cultures and organizational climates into what they will need to be to survive in the 21st century. Leaders like Jack Welch of GE and Steven Covey have already told us that what will be critical to success in the future is "soft stuff with hard results" and From Chaos to Coherence shows us how to do that with ease, grace, and success!

For any CEO, VP, Manager, Staff, Front Line worker- the simplicity of the concepts, the scientific foundation of the technology, and the ratio of success achieved by major organizations makes this book worth the read.

The simple premise of exercising, on a consistent basis, the innate positive qualities of basic human nature is consistent with the success we see Fast Companies having. With the increasing mental and emotional chaos written about in many articles, business magazines, newspapers, and management books, this book by Childre and Cryer is not only refreshing, but also provides practical solutions carefully laid out in what they call the four dynamics of inner quality management.

I have already started applying their simple processes to my life and my business problems and am experiencing immediate improvements in my mental clarity, productivity, and emotional state, particularly in high pressure situations. As the phrase inner quality implies, I believe we have to take care of ourselves internally first so that we can take care of business!

I am a business consultant. As I read this book the words "This is it" kept running through my brain. These principles of Internal self-management are the antidote to the illness I see in too many organizations. Very talented individuals with a desire to do their very best are losing their spirits and hemorrhaging under the perception that they "can't manage the pace" anymore. Stress and overwhelm feed cynicism which quickly leads to breakdown. Doc Childre and Bruce Cryer have show us the map to restore and sustain organizational vitality and wellness. How to thrive as individuals and then thrive as teams and organizations. I clearly see that these tools are practical, have scientific underpinning and have been field-tested and proven. Imagine the impact on quality, climate and profits if an organization was able to transform even 15% of its Chaos into Coherence. If each organization has a "collective brain", it should be processing its information coherently and creatively, and the lifeblood of that organization (the spirit of its employees) should be coursing thru this oganism with full hearts. Bravo to Doc Childre and Bruce Cryer for showing us how to enter the 21st century with the tools to make this a reality. I'm recommending that every business manager, CEO, VP, administrator and politician study this book, learn the techniques for themselves and bring this to their organizations.

                            Book Description

Why did slums and suburbs develop simultaneously? Were class antagonisms to blame? Why did the Victorians believe there was a housing problem? The history of housing between 1780 and 1914 encapsulates many problems associated with the transition from a largely rural to an overwhelmingly urban nation, whose unprecedented pace imposed immense tensions within society. This book reviews the recent arguments and guides the student of social history to further reading, making it an ideal introduction to a central issue in nineteenth-century history.

                                                Book Description

By conducting an in-depth review of the great toys from ancient times to the present, youth- marketing expert Gene Del Vecchio reveals the six core qualities that help toys achieve blockbuster status:

the toy's unique satisfaction of children's emotional needs

the toy's acceptance among parents and unique fulfillment of their needs

the toy's perfect alignment with significant historical events or social trends

the toy's ability to reinvent itself

the toy's employment of inspiring, playful marketing

and, sometimes, the toy's serendipitous rendezvous with powerful, random events

The Blockbuster Toy! How to Invent the Next BIG Thing also sheds light on the definition of what it means to be a toy in today's world. From traditional toys, to foods, to multi-player on-line games, to the importance of story and Hollywood studio alliances, Del Vecchio casts a broad net and explains, in ways that marketers can learn from and interested readers will find amazingly insightful, how playthings become pop culture.

Readers will learn here the essence of a blockbuster toy and the various recent approaches used by Crayola, Disney, and other companies in choosing their products. Six chapters discuss blockbuster marketing strategies, all designed to help toy-industry professionals ignite the smiles that can make their careers.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-11-07

As an up-and-coming successful toy inventor, I thought this book was excellent. I have read a few others, but I found that this one inspired the most ideas. Del Vecchio's matrixes are a great tool for idea generation (or the checking of your ideas). Buy it and read it.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ FOR PLAYMAKERS.......2003-12-27

Gene Del Vecchio's new book, The Blockbuster Toy-How to Invent the Next Big Thing, provides penetrating insights and well- honed experiences. His awareness helps to clarify the puzzle of creating a successful product from many complex dimensions.
The book is well written. It provides the vantage point of history, popularity, culture and values to show "playmakers" what works, what does not, and why. This book is a must read, providing valuable guidance for every "playmaker" and everyone in the business-from inventors to manufacturers and sellers.
You will be able to compare the experiences you have had with the products discussed that can be measured against his sensible and practical guidance.Perhaps more "playmakers" will ponder the fact that many successful toys were created not for fame and fortune, but instead for the love and laughter of children-basic values that have been superseded by avaricious investors and the eager quest for the "hot toy." The many concrete examples present classic icons that surpass time and trends and remain perennially, "Evergreen." There is a lot of value in understanding the essential components that make for success and to use his principles for careful study.
Who knows what will become the next "Furby" or "Teddy." Meanwhile read this book to get inspiration, knowledge and the map and compass before you venture forth.

                                                Book Description

This brash and rollicking autobiography is a potent primer of the rough-and-tumble world of political consulting by one of its founding fathers and preeminent experts. A cross between a patriotic redneck raconteur and a TV-savvy renaissance man, Raymond D. Strother is unafraid to name names and refuses to mince words in tales of what he calls "the beauty and gore" of American politics.

Strother begins with his blue-collar Democratic upbringing in southeast Texas and the crash course in Louisiana politics and corruption he received following graduate school. With the pervasion of TV and his mastery of the subtleties of political commercials, he entered into the big-time senatorial and congressional races of the 1970s and early 1980s. Strother's book reaches its dramatic climax in the never-before-fully told story of Gary Hart's 1984 presidential campaign; the author crystallizes an image of Hart as a brilliant, enigmatic, but ultimately self-destructive man and a democracy increasingly bedazzled by celebrity, blinded by breaches of privacy. Further adventures of Strother with the Clintons, Al Gore, and Louisiana notables, as well as famous consultants such as Dick Morris, Matt Reese, and James Carville, both tantalize and instruct.

Falling Up is a wildly entertaining, controversial, but finally optimistic political and media success story that will thrill and inspire a broad range of students, academics, journalists, and anyone spellbound by American politics.

5 out of 5 stars A honest look at the world of politics.......2003-09-14

Strother, a Texas bred Democrat consultant who served as a mentor to better known figures such as James Carville, recounts his experiences in the rough and tumble world of politics. In many hands, this could have been a very factual, dry and boring book. Luckily for the reader, Strother is an uproarious storyteller.

The son of a fervent union man in Port Arthur, Texas, Strother more or less falls into the political consulting business by default. He begins his career in Louisana, a hotbed of corruption and questionable ethics. Thru his journey, we relive his often painful and hilarious campaign experiences with country singer Jimmie Davis, Gary Hart and Bill Clinton.

Current politics are dirty business and not for the weak of heart. Idealists are often rudely discarded before they even realize what's happened. Strother considers himself a man of integrity in a profession that increasingly looks at such a trait as a weakness. He not only has to deal with Republican adversaries but underhanded tactics by members of his own party. Strother is honest in his analysis of his work and colleagues and spares no one including other Democrats who employed dirty tricks against his firm.

No matter what side your political beliefs fall, this is a good read if you want to understand how politics work behind the scenes.

Books about politics by insiders get most of the business right, but only Ray Strother tells you what it is really like to work in national politics in plain, unhyped prose.

5 out of 5 stars great history to interesting present.......2003-05-20

Ray Strother's chronicle of the industry that brings us our leaders is fascinating. His story is also an "American Success Story". From the giants of the U.S. Senate includingRussell Long (recently passed) and Lloyd Bentsen to today's leaders in the Senate - Mary Landrieu, Blanche Lincoln and Zell Miller - Strother has woven a tapestry of stories that enthral and make us consider our democracy.

This is a first-rate, fast-read of an industry that is seldom discussed but that brings us world leaders. Ad agency execs marvel at their brilliance but at the end of the day they sell sugar water to children. Strother has given an insight to a world seldom seen, but of importance to all of us.

Get the book - read it and pass it around. This is one of those books that flys below the radar but could become a movie.

Raymond Strother's warts-and-all memoir of his life as a political consultant is a fun, must-read for all students of American politics. Strother's career began when there was still some innocence in campaigning, and winds up during the frustrating years of ego-driven hacks whose self-importance overshadows their candidates, to the detriment of government. Ray Strother's genuinity was formed the old-fashioned way: he grew up poor and learned to appreciate other people.

Strother's tales of Southern political skirmishes will entertain. He's a smooth storyteller who should write more, now that he's out of the maelstrom of the Washington kill-or-be-killed consultant circuit.

Caveat: I am a Republican, and although Strother's life has been spent around Democrats, his tales are compelling across the board.

Hold the presses! Here's the sensational story of the birth of investigative journalism in America. At the turn of the 20th century, news reporters and monthly magazines collaborate to create a new kind of journalism—in-depth, serialized exposés of corporate, labor, and political corruption. Many of these stories become instant bestsellers in book format: books like The Jungle, Upton Sinclair's classic account of corruption in the meat-packing industry.

Ann Bausum's dramatic narrative follows a generation of dedicated journalists who force responsible changes in industry and politics as America thrives. Muckrakers is the inside story of public-spirited journalism right through its evolution, with profiles of latter-day practitioners like Woodward and Bernstein and today's Internet bloggers.

Ann Bausum's storytelling savvy will engage and inspire young people to cherish age-old values such as truth and public accountability. Muckrakers is the scoop on American journalism.

Today there's a self-help book for virtually every occasion. If you're young, you'll find guidance about relationships and careers. As you get older, they'll tell you how to stay young forever or how to age gracefully. In between, hundreds of tomes offer tips about self-esteem, prosperity, or coping skills for your inner child.
Nowhere, in all these thousands of titles, have I ever seen a book about being free. Likely no-one has been looking for one, because in our culture, we assume that we're already free. But of course the most important yet difficult questions to answer are the ones it never occurs to us to ask. This book invites the reader to ask themself; "Do I really live free in the world and feel comfortable in my own skin?" I was intrigued.

Author and therapist Paul Peele suggests that you are free only when you can see what's real and what's not. He asks; if you were in a room and couldn't see the door, would you be free? He claims, on the one hand you have more freedom than you can possibly imagine and on the other hand you are limited by your own thoughts and beliefs about what is true and what is real. He suggests that most of the rules by which you live your life are made up. He argues that all of the difficulty, struggle and suffering in your life is only present because you believe your thoughts and because you believe your thoughts are significant. Then he doesn't suggest you stop or control your thinking, but just that you learn to question what you think and believe. His point is you don't have to believe everything you think. Paul makes statements like; freedom exists when you don't believe your own opinions. In his book he points out how often we mistake our opinions for the laws of nature. This may sound like abstract philosophy but he always comes back to the theme of the book, being free and how to do that. Above all this is a practical book about how to live free in the world and be at home in your own skin.

Paul Peele is a counsellor and psychotherapist. He is a student of Zen meditation and practical philosophy. He has been intrigued for a lifetime with the question, "What makes a person free to be, to do and to feel what they want?" But he says neither his nor anyone else's credentials matter because you are the only authority on your own life.
The author doesn't want you to believe anything he has to say. The very first line in his book is this. "I make no claim whatsoever that anything I will say is the truth." He argues that freedom exists when you don't believe your own opinions much less his. He simply tells you that doing anything better than you did it yesterday involves trying something different and watching what happens. Then he offers some alternatives to what most people have been trying.

The author wanders a bit at times and in trying to tell the reader too much he occasionally is a little hard to follow. Also this book represents such a radically different context for all that you already know that it takes an open mind and some imagination to get the point. But in the course of this meandering I came across some mind boggling insights. I couldn't just sit and read this book through. I frequently came across ideas that I needed to sit with and ponder. These ideas called for quite a leap from the way I had always thought about myself or about life.
Paul takes a positive viewpoint about how to work on your life without any judgments about yourself to drive it. Also this book is written in a personal and familiar conversational style which I found engaging.
In the seeming flood of self help books this one is significant because it deals with an important basic question.
"How do you know, what you think you know?"
This book is useful because it asks and helps to answer the question,
"What would it take to make you free?"
After reading this book, I do feel more aware of the things I'm doing that either limit me or set me free. The ideas in this book do help me to enjoy more freedom and less self judgment. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants life to be better without imagining that there is anything wrong with them now.

Alexander Graham Bell's life as inventor, scientist, and teacher is clearly told in a question-and-answer format, and complemented by a mix of photographs and illustrations. We learn not only how the telephone was invented and the mechanics behind its use, but how Bell's personal history, such as his mother being deaf, led to his interest in discovering alternate modes of communication.

                                                              Book Description

Information systems have become so complex and intertwined with process and politics that they now constitute an ecology in which executives must manage subtle human relationships and intricate group interactions as well as computers, networks, software, and individual experts. Hasenyager maintains that for most large corporations building better business technology linkage is a survival essential, enabling them to sustain their vital systems and simultaneously transform them to meet competitive pressures and exploit emerging technology. Written by an experienced manager, this book offers a persuasive discussion of the importance of business technology linkage and practical steps on how to build it in your company. It focuses on management essentials -- deciding how much to spend and invest, choosing how to organize, and defining how to measure and reward performance. After an analysis of how to decide how much to spend and what to spend it on, Hasenyager describes how business and technology people within an organization deal with each other. He offers a way to classify relationships based on perceived common interest among people and their relative authority, then focuses on partnerships and teams as the most effective models for business technology linkage. He describes the kinds of teams needed for system development and infrastructure management in the information ecology. With special focus on how ad hoc teams relate to an organization's traditional hierarchy, specific suggestions are given on how to establish accountability within teams and how to evaluate team performance. The book concludes with state-of-the-art information connecting organization structure, business technology linkage, and company profitability, followed by 14 principles of information technology management. Senior corporate managers will find this a unique, provocative, and constructive addition to their personal and company libraries on management skills and methods.

5 out of 5 stars An experienced senior exec explains how it all fits.......1999-05-21

Mr Hasenyager has quite a few years of experience as an executive and CIO for several major companies. There are very few books written by people in the trenches, and most of those are "How I did it". This book is a practical guide on how technology can be integrated in a company.

The Author assumes that the reader is already familiar with the basic material (eg the hows and whys of teams, development methodology, etc). Mr. Hasenyager takes the theories and brings an organization and application to them that moves them in to the world of practical, day-to-day business. This framework is more complex than I can do justice to here.

Mr Hasenyager's work is always interesting and frequently surprising. I found his material on the business/technology relationship to be quite true and very useable. I was surprised that there have been studies on optimal IT organization and his analysis of this is fascinating.

This is a "good read" for anyone in IT that wonders how things could be, and a "should read" for senior executives trying to get the most out of technology in their organization.
