Practical Business Statistics with Student CD-ROM
Andrew F Siegel Manufacturer: McGraw-Hill/Irwin ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0072821256 |
Book Description
Practical Business Statistics, 5/e was written in response to instructors not wanting a formula driven, mathematically encyclopedic book. The use of computer applications means some topics no longer require coverage in detail. This allows future managers to know how to use and understand statistics. The text does this by using examples with real data that relate to the functional areas of business such as finance, accounting, and marketing. It de-emphasizes the theoretical, and presents the material in a well-written, easy style designed to motivate students. The emphasis is on understanding and applications as opposed to mathematical precision and formula detail.Customer Reviews:

From Chaos to Coherence: Advancing Emotional and Organizational Intelligence Through Inner Quality Management
Doc Childre , and Bruce Cryer Manufacturer: Butterworth-Heinemann ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 075067007X |
Book Description
From Chaos to Coherence explores a provocative and inspiring model of organizational and individual intelligence. Called Inner Quality Management (IQM), the model helps unravel the intricate relationship between the individual employee and the organization. The book looks at how organizational systems have adapted to modern day chaos, and the strain that this adaptation is having on the inner workings of an organization and it's people. The book proposes a new technology, grounded in science, for building people and organizations that respond gracefully to change, crisis, and challenge. It covers themes of coherence, leadership, self-management, authentic communication, emotional virus, organizational climate, the drain of overcare, male/female balance and quantum management. A book of tools, insights and common sense intelligence.Customer Reviews:
Eye opening with bright ideas on personal management.......2003-09-24
1) The heart is not just an organ for pumping blood, but with the second largest amount of neuron (the same type of cell for the functioning in our brain). We do have a lot of it in our digestion system as well, a possible explanation to our heart and gut feelings.
2) Stress affects our production of hormones and drains our energy. Extended period of stress leads to maladaptation and thus premature aging and health problems. I like the author's refering to the fish in the highly contaminated Hudson River.
3) The analogy of the natural frequency in nature (ref the resonance for string instructment) to the need for dynamic balance inside a human and thus an organisation for optimal performance.
In short, though I dont believe the approach prescribed by this book can help much to improve the culture of many big corps, I do regard this as a very good book and I do recommend this to any business person who still has the heart for improvement.
I've Tried It -- It Works.......1999-04-15
For any CEO, VP, Manager, Staff, Front Line worker- the simplicity of the concepts, the scientific foundation of the technology, and the ratio of success achieved by major organizations makes this book worth the read.
The simple premise of exercising, on a consistent basis, the innate positive qualities of basic human nature is consistent with the success we see Fast Companies having. With the increasing mental and emotional chaos written about in many articles, business magazines, newspapers, and management books, this book by Childre and Cryer is not only refreshing, but also provides practical solutions carefully laid out in what they call the four dynamics of inner quality management.
I have already started applying their simple processes to my life and my business problems and am experiencing immediate improvements in my mental clarity, productivity, and emotional state, particularly in high pressure situations. As the phrase inner quality implies, I believe we have to take care of ourselves internally first so that we can take care of business!

Housing in Urban Britain, 1780-1914: Class, Capitalism, and Construction (Studies in Economic and Social History)
Richard Rodger Manufacturer: Palgrave Macmillan ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0333387082 |
Book Description
Why did slums and suburbs develop simultaneously? Were class antagonisms to blame? Why did the Victorians believe there was a housing problem? The history of housing between 1780 and 1914 encapsulates many problems associated with the transition from a largely rural to an overwhelmingly urban nation, whose unprecedented pace imposed immense tensions within society. This book reviews the recent arguments and guides the student of social history to further reading, making it an ideal introduction to a central issue in nineteenth-century history.

Falling Up: How a Redneck Helped Invent Political Consulting (Politics Media)
Raymond D. Strother Manufacturer: Louisiana State University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0807128562 |
Book Description
This brash and rollicking autobiography is a potent primer of the rough-and-tumble world of political consulting by one of its founding fathers and preeminent experts. A cross between a patriotic redneck raconteur and a TV-savvy renaissance man, Raymond D. Strother is unafraid to name names and refuses to mince words in tales of what he calls "the beauty and gore" of American politics.Strother begins with his blue-collar Democratic upbringing in southeast Texas and the crash course in Louisiana politics and corruption he received following graduate school. With the pervasion of TV and his mastery of the subtleties of political commercials, he entered into the big-time senatorial and congressional races of the 1970s and early 1980s. Strother's book reaches its dramatic climax in the never-before-fully told story of Gary Hart's 1984 presidential campaign; the author crystallizes an image of Hart as a brilliant, enigmatic, but ultimately self-destructive man and a democracy increasingly bedazzled by celebrity, blinded by breaches of privacy. Further adventures of Strother with the Clintons, Al Gore, and Louisiana notables, as well as famous consultants such as Dick Morris, Matt Reese, and James Carville, both tantalize and instruct.
Falling Up is a wildly entertaining, controversial, but finally optimistic political and media success story that will thrill and inspire a broad range of students, academics, journalists, and anyone spellbound by American politics.
Customer Reviews:
A honest look at the world of politics.......2003-09-14
The son of a fervent union man in Port Arthur, Texas, Strother more or less falls into the political consulting business by default. He begins his career in Louisana, a hotbed of corruption and questionable ethics. Thru his journey, we relive his often painful and hilarious campaign experiences with country singer Jimmie Davis, Gary Hart and Bill Clinton.
Current politics are dirty business and not for the weak of heart. Idealists are often rudely discarded before they even realize what's happened. Strother considers himself a man of integrity in a profession that increasingly looks at such a trait as a weakness. He not only has to deal with Republican adversaries but underhanded tactics by members of his own party. Strother is honest in his analysis of his work and colleagues and spares no one including other Democrats who employed dirty tricks against his firm.
No matter what side your political beliefs fall, this is a good read if you want to understand how politics work behind the scenes.

great history to interesting present.......2003-05-20
This is a first-rate, fast-read of an industry that is seldom discussed but that brings us world leaders. Ad agency execs marvel at their brilliance but at the end of the day they sell sugar water to children. Strother has given an insight to a world seldom seen, but of importance to all of us.
Get the book - read it and pass it around. This is one of those books that flys below the radar but could become a movie.
happy reading
Genuine, honest memoir of politics.......2003-04-26
Strother's tales of Southern political skirmishes will entertain. He's a smooth storyteller who should write more, now that he's out of the maelstrom of the Washington kill-or-be-killed consultant circuit.
Caveat: I am a Republican, and although Strother's life has been spent around Democrats, his tales are compelling across the board.

Managing the Information Ecology: A Collaborative Approach to Information Technology Management
Bruce W. Hasenyager Manufacturer: Quorum Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 089930947X |
Book Description
Information systems have become so complex and intertwined with process and politics that they now constitute an ecology in which executives must manage subtle human relationships and intricate group interactions as well as computers, networks, software, and individual experts. Hasenyager maintains that for most large corporations building better business technology linkage is a survival essential, enabling them to sustain their vital systems and simultaneously transform them to meet competitive pressures and exploit emerging technology. Written by an experienced manager, this book offers a persuasive discussion of the importance of business technology linkage and practical steps on how to build it in your company. It focuses on management essentials -- deciding how much to spend and invest, choosing how to organize, and defining how to measure and reward performance. After an analysis of how to decide how much to spend and what to spend it on, Hasenyager describes how business and technology people within an organization deal with each other. He offers a way to classify relationships based on perceived common interest among people and their relative authority, then focuses on partnerships and teams as the most effective models for business technology linkage. He describes the kinds of teams needed for system development and infrastructure management in the information ecology. With special focus on how ad hoc teams relate to an organization's traditional hierarchy, specific suggestions are given on how to establish accountability within teams and how to evaluate team performance. The book concludes with state-of-the-art information connecting organization structure, business technology linkage, and company profitability, followed by 14 principles of information technology management. Senior corporate managers will find this a unique, provocative, and constructive addition to their personal and company libraries on management skills and methods.Customer Reviews:
An experienced senior exec explains how it all fits.......1999-05-21
The Author assumes that the reader is already familiar with the basic material (eg the hows and whys of teams, development methodology, etc). Mr. Hasenyager takes the theories and brings an organization and application to them that moves them in to the world of practical, day-to-day business. This framework is more complex than I can do justice to here.
Mr Hasenyager's work is always interesting and frequently surprising. I found his material on the business/technology relationship to be quite true and very useable. I was surprised that there have been studies on optimal IT organization and his analysis of this is fascinating.
This is a "good read" for anyone in IT that wonders how things could be, and a "should read" for senior executives trying to get the most out of technology in their organization.
