In addition to improvements to the Planning and Control chapter, which was the strength untill now, this 5th edition has significantly expanded the chapters on Strategy, People / Teams, Quality / Continuous Improvement, and Product Development, making it a more complete tool.
Excellent diagnosis and guide for improvement of companies.......1999-05-21
I have been using Oliver Wight checklists as a support for improving company processes for over 11 years, both as a practitioner and as a consultant. This fourth version has a very detailed chapter 5 (corresponding to MRPII / ERP / Supply Chain Management) and reasonably good chapters 1 through 4. "Non-initiated" professionals may find some difficult and may misinterpret some of the questions, but this will improve as they keep on applying the checklist. Not a pleasant reading but definitely worth using it!

There's not a lot that's new here. This is good brand basics for beginners or for those who need a brush up. It is very accessibly written. The examples are clear, concrete and valuable. It's free of the irritating `brand' jargon that is so pervasive in many other books on the subject.

A clever and humorous read for the average econ student........2005-01-02
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I'm an economics student Santa Monica High School and when assigned a book report on the subject, I found most of the other books I was considering full of jargon and code words that made them confusing and somewhat daunting for me to pick up. Such is not the case with Brand Warfare. It's is extremely engagingly written, very lucid, and full of funny stories. The book also works because Mr. D'Allesandro is a major-league character and has a remarkably dynamic outlook on the world for a guy who runs a life insurance company. I'm probably not the target audience for this book, but I found it to fun and insightful and well worth the time.

While this is a short book and easy to read, it does not lack substance. Being in advertising and marketing, I know the value of a brand. But as D'Alessandro points out in his book, branding is the business of everyone in an organization.
This book would be of value to a CEO of a large organization and all of its employees or the owner of a one-person shop and all advertising people. Branding, after all, is something everyone is responsible for. It is not the exclusive domain of the ad agency.
The book shows how a large, well-known brand can lose market share overnight to an Internet start up. There is much in this book that will be of great value to you if you want to be a well-respected brand --- whether you are a big business or a one-person brand.

yet another solid (but not ideal) guide to b-schools.......2001-09-28
I've been searching for an ideal business school guide for a while. I want something that will give me hard data (surveys, percentages, etc.), as well as the opinions of recruiters, graduates, and students of the school described... And while I found this Arco guide to be decent and informative, it certainly isn't ideal.
I picked up this guide primarily because of the interesting data it provided on each school. Aside from the traditional admissions/enrollment, costs, alumni success data, this book allows the schools the opportunity to rate their particular strengths and weaknesses. For example, schools will rate their programs in consulting, marketing, MIS, etc. as well as resources committed to that particular part of the program. The schools also get to rate their commitment to things like diversity and international perspectives (as well as resources devoted to those committments). You also get each school's rating (on a 3 point scale) on how important a role various admissions criteria--such as GPA, GMAT, experience, etc.--play in the admissions decisions. The evaluative data, while useful in its own right, is provided by the programs themselves and should be taken with a grain of salt.
In addition to these data, there is a decent, well-written and informative, but brief description of each school, its programs, setting, facilities, and opportunities.
The book is divided in two "sections." The first section (ch. 1-5) covers the general issues such as the MBA job market today, the MBA admissions process, etc.. While decently written and with some good points and information, educating the reader about all the intricacies of the MBA admissions process was clearly not the main goal of this book (if you're looking for general "how to apply" info, check out Montauk's "How to Get into Top MBA Programs").
The second section, the meat of the book, describes over 50 MBA programs in more or less detail. The US MBA programs are divided into three categories: Outstanding, Distinguished, and Recommended. A good amount of info is provided for the first two categories. The Recommended programs and the handful of international programs represented in their own separate section are given only cursory treatment. For info on international programs I'd turn to "Which MBA" published by the Economist magazine people.
To sum up this long winded review: This is a pretty decent guide with some unique information. However, I would recommend it only to those looking at the top 50 or so US programs.

The book provides extensive coverage of current state-of-the-art (academic) research on information systems outsourcing. An excellent introduction succeeds in relating the 13 articles (each by different authors). Even though the perspective is clearly from a scholarly point-of-view, the topics and articles are all accessible for the interested (OS) specialist and consultant. If you need a quick overview _and_ thorough introduction into current OS topics you desparately need that volume. It is _not_ a cookbook for CIOs seeking arguments pro or con outsourcing or how to craft RFPs. It is a tool which can unfold its strength in the hands of an apt consultant.
