Globalization and Marketization in Education: A Comparative Analysis of Hong Kong and Singapore
Ka-Ho Mok , and Jason Tan Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 184376380X |
Book Description
Globalization has effected tremendous change to the character and functions of education worldwide. This unique book focuses on its impact upon Hong Kong and Singapore, and how these two East Asian Tigers have responded to the strong global tide of marketization in shaping and developing their education policies. The authors discuss the way in which increasingly prominent tides of marketization, privatization, corporatization and decentralization have influenced the governance and management of education in these two Asian economies. They aim to identify and examine the crucial socio-historical, socio-economic and socio-political factors for education reforms initiated in the two societies in recent years.Ka-Ho Mok and Jason Tan examine the education policy developments of these two cities, to draw wider conclusions as to how nation-states and/or local governments react and respond to the growing impact of globalization.
Globalization and Marketization in Education will draw an interested readership from education policy researchers, policymakers and administrators. Scholars of public policy, and Asian, development and education studies will also find the book of special interest and value.

Intertemporal Asset Pricing: Evidence from Germany (Contributions to Economics)
Bernd Meyer Manufacturer: Physica-Verlag Heidelberg ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3790811599 |
Book Description
The book is the first one to analyse the "Equity Premium Puzzle" and the "Risk-free Rate Puzzle" in the German capital market. It starts with a thorough discussion of the available theoretical models and then goes on to perform various empirical studies, applying two recent approaches for the empirical investigation of intertemporal asset pricing models, the variance bound approach and the calibration approach. The book provides insights into the basic mechanisms of intertemporal equilibrium asset pricing models derived from the consumption and investment choice of individuals. It shows that with reasonable and not very complicated modifications of the standard intertemporal equilibrium models, especially with recursive preferences, important properties of German rates of return can be explained. The book adds much to the understanding of intertemporal asset pricing and recursive preferences and at the same time points to various directions for future research.

Expensive Book - Not Much Content.......2004-04-17
I suggest looking elsewhere for a useful reference.
Product Design Review: A Method for Error-Free Development.......2001-11-27
1) This book presents a very critical subject which is going to play an important role in improving productivity, customer satisfaction via avoided costs (seen through reduction in installation and waranty costs, reduced costs of transfering product to volume manufacturing).
2) Presents consolidated information from various Japanese companies.
3) Gives a glimpse of how Japanese companies are actually practicing this important technique.
Weaknesses:
1) I would have liked the cases to be more detailed describing every step of design review in more details. This would have given readers a good head start if they were looking for a template.
Overall: Considering there is very little literature available on this important subject since most of it is company confidential, this book at least addresses this important subject and presents at least some details via case studies.
A must read for someone who wants to understand, write DR procedures.
thanks,

Culture and Technology in Modern Japan (Culture & Technical Modern Japan)
Manufacturer: I. B. Tauris ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1860643256 |
Book Description
The rise of Japan as an economic superpower is a remarkable episode in the history of the modern world. This book seeks to explain this phenomenal success by looking at the issues of culture and technology, and making comparison with the experience of the US, the UK and Europe as a whole. The relationship between culture and technology lies at the heart of the undoubted market success of Japan, and the development of high technology and the much-lauded "cultural" attributes of Japan have contributed powerfully to national success. These vital issues are examined in detail and include, for example, the relationship between company "culture" and "structure," and the overriding impact of Japanese "national" culture. National cultures and the West are compared with the consequent effect on entrepreneurial and technological progress.

Consumption and Material Culture in Contemporary Japan
Manufacturer: Kegan Paul ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0710306180 |
Book Description
Consumption and material culture have recently re-entered anthropological debate. Objects are no longer regarded as mere "things" and are recognised as being freighted with symbolic meaning and as constituting the essential elements of exchange in gift and commodity relationships. This is one of the first applications of these analyses to contemporary East Asian societies.
Navigating within the context of Japanese studies, contributors examine a range of topics, including: the role of objects in the educational socialisation of young children, the transformation of everyday objects through the process of commodification, the culture of the collection and display of antiques and artefacts, the material dimensions of sexuality and the presentation of the body, and more.
The book locates Japan within the current debates and demonstrates the place of the material in social relationships and cultural patterning in Japan's complex and fast changing society.

Blue Is Hot, Red Is Cool: Choosing the Right Color for Your Logo
Manufacturer: How Design Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0060936568 Release Date: 2005-04-26 |
Book Description
Designers make color choices that affect both the meaning and impact of their logo designs every day. They have to ask themselves: Is orange too forceful? Does red give the wrong impression? Will purple convey the right message? Questions like these can be put to rest with this ingenious, tell-all-about-color book. While many books address logo design in general, this is the only one that examines the psychology and use of color in terms of how it affects a design, and how that design affects a viewer. By exposing the underlying meaning of each hue, this book ensures that designers never again second-guess their color choices.

Meso-Organizations and the Creation of Knowledge: Yoshiya Teramoto and His Work on Organization and Industry Collaborations
Manufacturer: Praeger Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1567206131 |
Book Description
Japan is now in its longest recession of the post-World War II period. This failure stems from macroeconomic malfunctioning and--more important--from the country's cultural environment, which has been inhibiting domestic corporations' abilities to respond to dire socio-economic issues. As all traditional attempts to revitalize the economy have failed, creative ideas and purposeful interventions are necessary for survival. Past business assumptions must be discarded, the most important of which is the emphasis on insular business practices that focus on the internal environment of a single organization or corporate group. Unique value can no longer by created in a static and limited manner. To create unique value in the increasingly sophisticated, advanced and fragmented environment of the global marketplace, corporations are forming partnerships that cross all societal boundaries. The authors coin the term meso-organizations for such networks that go beyond the scope of traditional businesses and bring in individuals, organizations from different industries and not-for-profit organizations into their business processes, and that view their environments as extensions of themselves. This book pulls together and expands on various theories of networks and knowledge creation to present a framework that captures the complex nature of today's business domain and processes, and offers suggestions for wide-ranging collaboration.Books:
