                      Book Description

This book provides a single roadmap for compliance with the US QSR, the European Medical Device Directives, and ISO Standards for device and diagnostic products. Written in case-study format, it begins with information on how to establish a QSR documentation system. Dr. Kuwahara explains implementation methods for each section of the QSRs (21 CFR 820). Documentation requirements and guidelines for what documentation you need for your quality system, why you need it, and how to prepare it are detailed, as well as practical information on efficiently and effectively organizing your records, procedures, work instructions, and Quality Manual. The book shows you how to evaluate your existing documentation's fit with the worldwide quality systems and the GMPs/QSRs. A grid comparing ISO 9001 and US 21 CFR 820 requirements is included.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for those needing to meet GMP requirements........1998-11-06

This book provides extensive information for specialists in companies that have to comply with FDA regulations. It also has some good information on auditing that will be useful to quality engineers and auditors with limited experience in International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) requirements. CFR standards are tough. Compliance with them, following the lead of this book, should help a company comply with the ISO standards. Companies that comply with the ISO standards, however, might not comply with the CFR requirements This book leads the reader through a series of steps that will help the company meet CFR requirements. It goes into extensive detail identifying and interpreting the various CFRs so that the readers will not take them too lightly. Some CFRs are much too vague and can lull newcomers to the field into thinking that they are in compliance when they are not. I would have rated this book as a 5 except that only a limited number of quality practitioners have a need for this material on GMP compliance. Hank Lefevre, CQE & PE

                        Book Description

The title of this book has a double meaning: on the one hand, it deals with two very different societies both of which made iron in the early modern period. On the other hand, iron made these societies: the needs of iron production and the resistance to these demands from local peasant communities gave the societies a special kind of cohesion and rationality. This volume presents the findings of a joint team of Swedish and Russian scholars examining the social organization of work in early modern iron industry in their respective societies. The comparison was carried out against the backdrop of the international discussion on proto industrialization, its prerequisites and consequences. There has, however, been a certain bias in much of that debate, the focus being mainly on Western Europe, particularly on Britain, and on the textile trades. This book offers an important contribution to the debate in that it widens the perspective by discussing Northern and Eastern Europe and by studying the iron industry. More particularly it examines actual production processes, the organization of work, social conflict, questions of ownership and its evolution, as well as the diffusion and organization of technical knowledge. The comparative approach is consistently applied throughout, with each chapter closely integrating the results relating to the two selected geographical areas, thus showing ways of solving some of the problems arising from comparative history.

Today's business environment demands significant changes in the way we do business. Simply formulating strategy is no longer sufficient; we must also design the processes to implement it effectively. The key to change is process innovation, a revolutionary new approach that fuses information technology and human resource management to improve business performance. The cornerstone to process innovation's dramatic results is information technology--a largely untapped resource, but a crucial enabler of process innovation. In turn, only a challenge like process innovation affords maximum use of information technology's potential. Davenport provides numerous examples of firms that have succeeded or failed in combining business change and technology initiatives. He also highlights the roles of new organizational structures and human resource programs in developing process innovation. Process innovation is quickly becoming the byword for industries ready to pull their companies out of modest growth patterns and compete effectively in the world marketplace.

5 out of 5 stars A great book on Process Improvement.......2005-10-08

                                  Thank You to Tom Davenport.

This is a wise author who wrote a great book in the early 90's. It was eclipsed a bit by Hammer and Champy's "reengineering the corporation." It has never been given the press it rightfully deserves. I read this book in 1997 and have found it to be useful over and over again. This is a book of important business insights regarding process improvement through technology. Keep in mind that the book was written prior to the internet becoming mainstream. This author saw the future and wrote about it before it happened on a wide scale.

Any business person can draw from the wealth of knowledge in this book.

The book is a must read for business analysts, managers, and project leaders in the Information Technology field.

This book, Hammer and Champy's book, Books by H James Harrington, and some of the newer Six Sigma books can form a great curriculum for those professionals undertaking process improvement initiatives in their companies.

Change is constant. When will process improvements cease to be needed? This book looks at the dynamics of process innovation/change and how it pervades organizations.

In economic downtimes, innovation can spur growth. Leaders in companies can improve their competitive advantage through process innovations and benefit from the efficiencies and savings gained through process improvements.

5 out of 5 stars A roadmap for process innovation and improvement.......2000-06-14

Davenport presents a practical roadmap for process improvement and process innovation which I have found very useful as a practitioner. Although not prescriptive, the text provides practitioners with useful very insights which can form the basis of an organisation's business process innovation/improvement methodology.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Must read.......2000-03-29

This is a well-written book on the subject of process or business reengineering. It is written in a non-technical language, wastes few words, and covers the entire spectrum of topics that are essential to a successful reengineering effort. The discussions place a significant emphasis on the role that information or computer technology play today in the reengineering effort, particularly how this technology can facilitate the overall effort. I found the book largely sticking to the overall thread however at times it did become a wee bit academic to flip through the sections. All in all, a very good read.

                                      Book Description

The focus of The Internet, Social Intelligence & Labor is the impact of the Internet on human resources and the balance of power between labor and management. The Internet has contributed to the organization and mobilization of workers facing multinational corporations; it has permitted instantaneous contact across borders; it also facilitates communication among managers and permits the coordination of dispersed workplaces. Managers may more easily control an international network of production sites on-line. The Internet provides opportunities for managers and workers to pursue their overlapping and conflicting goals.

                                        Book Description

                                        * What kind of university is emerging from the widespread adoption of new information and communication technologies in teaching, research and administration?

                                        * What is the nature and scale of the work required to put the university online?

                                        * What are the consequences - for academics, students, managers and others - of putting the university online?

New information and communication technologies (ICTs), and above all the internet, hold out many promises for higher education institutions in terms of flexibility, efficiency, quality and access. The vision is that of a virtual institution. Putting the University Online seeks to uncover what the pursuit of that vision means for an institution, its staff, students and other stakeholders, and consequences, intended and unintended, for the role and identity of the university.

This is the first book length study, based on detailed fine-grained analysis of what 'putting the university online' actually means for those involved and the wider institutions. James Cornford and Neil Pollock draw both on theories from the sociology of technology and on a large and diverse body of empirical research in order to explore how universities are attempting to build and use new ICTs to sit alongside, complement and, in some cases, replace established means of delivering, organizing and managing higher education. Their book will help sensitize policy makers, academics, university managers, and students to the limits to, and implications of, the pursuit of a virtual future for higher education.
