      Book Description

Some teachers believe that gender doesn't matter to young children, some believe that good early childhood practice produces equity for all and others believe that pursuing gender equity compromises relationships with parents. Glenda MacNaughton confronts these common myths and shows that even very young children are clearly aware of gender roles, whether they are playing among themselves, listening to stories or interacting with adults.

Rethinking Gender in Early Childhood Education reveals how the focus on individual development that is promoted in early childhood education doesn't produce gender equity. Rather, everyday teaching practices influence the gendering of young children's identities. Glenda MacNaughton draws on theory and research to explain this and to develop approaches, which open up new possibilities for both boys and girls.

      Book Description

There is power when systems and processes are aligned to service the customer. It is through the coherence of strategies and tactics that success becomes inevitable. Just as a laser beam is powerful because of the coherence and singularity of its wavelength, profitability is a result of the coherence of internal processes and systems. The goal of this book is to provide an awareness of the three models that Marketing and Sales use to make not only correct decisions, but also winning decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Improve Time To Profit.......2002-03-27

Superbly organized and clearly written, this book should become a dog-eared handbook in the war chest of every marketer, product manager and salesperson. Although he downplays his research, Kobi James brings both an academic and an on-the-street perspective that both questions and motivates the attitude of companies to focus on customer needs when rolling out a product or solution. Anyone in the business of selling product or services should do themselves a favor and hunker down with this book

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for those who are not Mathematically Inclined.......2003-05-07

I used this book for an undergrad economic stats course. The book is not based on technical concepts, that is to say, not all about the numbers. The book uses storylines to explain the statistics concepts. The exercises are helpful as well. One thing to note though, the text uses minitab extensively in the regression chapters etc when the book came with "kaddstat" for excel. Overall, I would say this book is best for those who do not enjoy reading technical mathematics (focusing on forumulas, etc). This book is more for those who are always asking "why am I learning this"..."what is the real world application of this stuff? "

      1 out of 5 stars Avoid!.......2002-10-05

Horrible book! I purchased this oversized book for one of my MBA classes and it provided little value. The assignments level of complexity was far greater than examples in book so I found myself reading help files for hours and hours. I was also questioning myself many times because of all the errors. Shame on Wiley for wasting trees.

        Book Description

This text teaches readers the basic techniques for analyzing data to make business decisions. Each chapter of the book begins with a "story". The story tells of a business problem that needs to be solved and describes the data that were collected to help solve the problem. The exercises which are presented in the chapter are tied to that story and are threaded throughout the chapter. The reader is then left to finish the analysis for the story problem. Sample output from Excel, as well as keystroke and menu instructions are featured throughout the book.

                            Book Description

Advertising has traditionally communicated messages with strong local and national identities to consumers. Increasingly, though, products, producers, advertising agencies and media are becoming internationalized. In the development of strategies that appeal to a large multinational consumer base, advertising language takes on new "multilingual" features. The author explores the role of advertising language in this new globalized environment from a communicative theory point of view, as well as from a close linguistic analysis of some major advertising campaigns within a multicultural and multilingual marketplace.

This book was O.K. There were many ideas to choose from but only a few good ones. Plus, there isn't much information on each business. You could find more ideas and a lot more information for free on the Internet.

Starting an Internet business could not be easier with the help of the information provided. The book starts with interview information from three successful Internet businesses and then follows that with how to get your point across, the various formats for a storefront, required features of the successful storefront, payment options, and levels of e-business. From there it moves to helping determine what is important to you and how to use that to find the right business for you. From there it moves to the profiles of successful businesses. These profiles are complete with how to market the business, startup costs, skills needed, online examples, etc. It finally concludes with information on how to build your site, get it submitted to search engines, e-mail marketing, using links and pretty much just about everything that you need to know in order to get the business up and running.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide to Starting an Online Business!.......2000-05-24

It is certainly no secret that the Internet has changed the way people conduct business. Those with products and services to offer have had a whole new world of opportunity opened up to them. Now just about anyone with a modest investment of time and money, with varying levels of computer skills and talent, can make their presence known with relative ease. Another good Internet business book has arrived on the scene that readers should know about. Daniel Janal, the author of another popular book, The Online Marketing Handbook, has written another real winner, 101 Businesses You Can Start on the Internet, with the intent to address the concerns of those who would like to join the ranks of the Internet business community.

101 Businesses... is divided into two sections. In the first section, Janal offers his readers a number of compelling reasons why one ought to open up shop on the Internet. Some reasons to consider are the reaching out to a worldwide market, to do business with an affluent market, no barriers of time zones, being open twenty-four hours a day, beating the competition to new markets because they are not online, very low startup costs, and little or no rent payments to make. Janal proceeds to outline the basics of getting started on the Internet, how to find your way around, and how to conduct your business. To his credit, Janal is brief and to the point when he needs to be, saving the greater portion of the book for other important matters.

The second section of the book, which I consider to be the heart of the publication, deals with the kind of business opportunities that exist on the Internet and how some folks have set up shop. Chapter-by-chapter, Janal discusses a number of creative business opportunities, such as computer and service-related work, and then provides solid case studies of those who have braved the waters, so to speak. Complete with names, addresses, phone numbers, URL's, and Web pages, Janal provides his readers with the insight that few previous publications have brought to light. Janal asks a number of penetrating questions of those who have already set up shop on the Internet that hit right at the heart of conducting business.

Janal breaks new ground in the direction of Internet business publications with this book. It is one thing to read about how to conduct business on the Internet and actually speaking with those who have been there. According to Janal, we ought to learn from the experiences of others, whether positive or negative. They have sound advice to offer! I hope Janal and other writers will continue developing this trend. Janal's book is well thought out and written. It will help many, including college students, who want to start their own businesses but who are in need of the encouragement of others. Put Janal and his case studies to work for you!

Instead, you should buy my new book, "Dan Janal's Guide to Marketing on the Internet." It is up-to-date and you'll benefit from it!

The IT Value Quest How to Capture the Business Value of IT-based infrastructure Theo J.W. Renkema Although the potential of information technology (IT) is beyond dispute, it proves to be very difficult to evaluate its true business value. In the present competitive business arena, modern IT provides the enabling infrastructure for efficient and effective business operations, leveraging business improvements and securing a competitive edge. Capturing the value of this IT-based infrastructure is often considered as the most critical and yet the most complex part of managerial decision-making. Many managers do not try to justify their expenditure or measure whether their money was well spent. This situation has become unacceptable in the light of the rising costs and uncertain benefits of this increasingly important type of business investment. The call for more financial returns and more 'value for money' can no longer be ignored. Making the right investment evaluations will make the vital difference between business success and failure. This book provides a unique perspective on assessing and creating business value from investments in IT-based infrastructure and, more importantly, it shows how the role of IT-based infrastructure is critical to obtain the full benefits of IT. 4 out of 5 stars Good topic, falls short on advanced measures.......2002-08-02

The author covers a broad array of very important infrastructure topics. The book is useful and valuable for anyone who has ever tried to justify the value of IT-based infrastructure projects. However, two of today's most powerful tools, real options analysis and simulation, are dismissed by the author as too complicated or abstract to be of any use for managers. While Renkema is correct to presume that most managers do ahve have a handle on these concepts, I was somewhat dissapointed to see that he did not encourage these avenues of methods to get at better numbers with which one can quantify the value of infrastructure. Nevertheless, the book is full of useful information regarding the decision-making process within bureaucratic environments as well as dealing with topics such as risk, argument structure, financial analysis, and qualitative analysis.
