      Book Description

`This excellent book provides the reader with comprehensive coverage of all aspect of poetry teaching. The book does more than inform us - it inspires profound reflection on the best ways it support poetry writing and draws us into the debate about assessment-driven curriculum' - School Librarian

`A must for trainee teachers and English departments' - Booktrusted News

` Drafting and Assessing Poetry is thoroughly researched and shows how attitudes towards teaching of poetry and indeed the place of poetry on the syllabus, has changed with political fashion over the years, but more importantly, Sue Dymoke shows how a handful of contemporary poets go about drafting their work and sees this process as an essential tool in the classroom, advocating that students should keep drafting notebooks, just like real writers.

Getting students, or indeed members of writing groups, to understand that one draft of a poem may not be the final or best work they can produce will never be a problem again!' - Writing in Education

`Sue Dymoke's book is a much needed antidote to the ubiquitous guides to poetry analysis…. This book is well worth reading for its clarity and wealth of ideas' - Bethan Marshall, TES Teacher Magazine

`Every English department should buy this remarkably comprehensive book. Inspiring approaches for teaching children to write poetry are clearly described. Sue Dymoke draws upon her extensive experience as a poet, English teacher and researcher to explore the place of writing poetry in English lessons and examinations. Her unique insights into both the writing and teaching of poetry should prove invaluable to English teachers' - Dr Mark Pike, Lecturer in English Education and Head of PGCE English, University of Leeds

`It is a useful book: a theoretical text, but with a practical focus, which makes it very readable and interesting, to teachers of young people particularly, but also, to teachers of adults and indeed in parts to poetry writers themselves, particularly those interested in working in schools, or simply curious about the general process of drafting and evaluating poetry' - County Lit, Nottinghamshire County Council Literature Newsletter

Drafting and Assessing Poetry offers a range of teaching strategies for developing students' poetry writing skills, and guidance about assessment approaches. Critical commentaries combine with illustrations of successful classroom practice to consider this essential but under-explored aspect of English teaching. Based on theory but with a practical dimension, the book engages readers in current critical debates about poetry teaching and its place in an assessment- driven curriculum.

This book is for reflective practitioners, including trainee teachers, who want to develop their understanding of poetry teaching and to gain insights, which will inform classroom practice. It will also be useful for literacy co-ordinators, teacher educators and other advisory staff in the field of English teaching.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-11-29

Firstly, the first review of this book on this page is by Goodloe Suttler who is actually acknowleged in the book so should have mentioned this in his review, unless this is a stunning coincidence.

However, his review is correct. This book extends the previous version (A New American TQM) and adds valuable new material. I found A New American TQM was in my top 5 Quality Books list - an excellent read. Four Practical Revolutions takes its place.

Highly recommended for its practical advice and comprehensive coverage of all aspects of quality improvement.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on quality leadership.......2001-07-08

The success or failure of the design process depends on the organization within which it is embedded. An individual or group may bear the title "designer," but design responsibility is located in a team. Design teams include managers whose responsibilities cut across and link the comprehensive range of functions in an organization. These range from sourcing, supply, engineering, and operations, to logistics, marketing, and customer service. They may even include finance or advertising. Successful designers participate in a managerial process and understanding the flow of work through an industrial organization is the key to successful design.

This book offers a structured overview of a total design process. The process identifies and solves problems to create or improve goods and services. The total design process incorporates and transcends the limited process of designing a functional artifact or service. Shiba and Walden address the challenge of shaping organizational knowledge, skill, and behavior to account for the total design process. This necessarily includes designing the systems that implement design. This is a managerial task, and this book addresses design process from a managerial and engineering perspective.

The book is divided into five parts. The first considers the evolution of business and the way that organizations today must work to meet social needs. The next four sections address the four practical revolutions that make this possible. These are customer focus, continuous improvement, total participation, and societal networking. The authors operationalize the four revolutions through specific tools and useful approaches. They give careful, effective descriptions of dozens of methods for management, problem solving, and skills development.

Specific tools and approaches described here include the 7-step reactive approach to problem solving, the 9-step project planning method, and the Hoshin Management system, along with strategies and tactics for specific applications. The approach is methodically pluralist and action-oriented, supported by a rich series of case studies and a 315-item bibliography.

This book is highly recommended. It should be in every design school library.

Shoji Shiba is a professor of business administration at Tsukuba University in Japan and at the Sloan School at MIT. David Walden is editor of the Center for Quality of Management Journal.

In my past role work in manufacturing operations and in my current role as a sofware product manager, I can honestly say that the techniques and ideas in these books are invaluable and can be put to practicle use everyday on the job.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book of Improvement Management.......2001-05-21

I have read many hundreds of book on management, on quality improvement, and on other more specific business-related topics. But I have never read a business book as comprehensive & thorough as the new Shiba/Walden edition. The authors have amply demonstrated what improvement is all about by taking their original book and seamlessly integrating 10 years of their active learning on related and new topics. This masterful work will be of particular importance to senior and middle managers who need quick access to the definitive reference manual for improvement thinking and practical, proven methods. This book towers above all others in the field ..... a 'must-have' for anyone who is serious about improvement work.

          Book Description

How did small European economies acquire the technologies and skills needed to industrialize in the nineteenth century? In this important contribution to a long-standing debate, Kristine Bruland looks at the Norwegian experience to show how a technological infrastructure was created, and suggests that much of this was due to the efforts of British machine makers who from the mid 1840s vigorously sought foreign markets. Providing not only basic technical services but also skilled labour to set up and then supervise the operation of the new machinery, British textile engineering firms were able to supply a complete ‘package’ of services, significantly easing the initial technical problems faced by Norwegian entrepreneurs. Kristine Bruland’s case-study of the Norwegian textile industry demonstrates clearly the paradox that Britain’s entrepreneurial efforts in the supply of capital goods overseas were largely responsible for the creation of the technical industrial bases of many of her major foreign competitors.

                Book Description

Clearly defining the challenges of daily production control, Practical Production Control: A Survival Guide for Planners and Schedulers is a soup-to-nuts, practical guide and desk reference that gives you the skill set required to meet today's real-world challenges. It explains how the scheduling task can be decomposed and organized; how the production control department can be structured; how to hire, train, and evaluate schedulers; how scheduling changes with the life cycle of the product and processes within the plant; and how software tools can be used to augment the scheduler's skill.

Most books on this subject describe production control from an idealistic perspective. This book describes real planning and scheduling — what a scheduler needs to think about when he or she gets into the office, when the boss asks for something impossible, and when the information received is not correct. Taking you behind closed doors, into the factory at 6:00 am, behind the scheduler's desk, and into the planning meetings, this book explores how to identify limiting factors for improved production control and provides a number of techniques for taking production control to the next level. While developed primarily for planners and schedulers, most any manufacturing or supply chain professional will gain value from this book.

                            Book Description

Tsarist Russia's commercial class is today receiving serious attention from both Russian and non-Russian historians. This book is a contribution to that literature. Commerce in Russian Urban Culture, 1861-1914 examines the relation between the entrepreneurial world, especially business and banking, and the cultural milieu of Russia. Going beyond the commercial-cultural connection of charitable activity, the contributors to this collaborative project also study cultural activity undertaken by enterprises for their own purposes, notably bank and commercial architecture.

"Culture and commerce" encompasses two areas in this volume. The first is the business milieu itself as a social and cultural phenomenon. Class and social stratification, types of entrepreneurs, and their mentality, religious affiliations, and charitable activities and donations are covered. The second is their impact on the form of cities, including not only Moscow and St. Petersburg but Odessa and Nizhnii Novgorod. Banks, insurance companies, and large commercial firms reshaped Russian cities with the construction of buildings for their own operations and retail shops, stock exchanges, mansions, and public buildings.

This book is based on a project of the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Resource and Reference Tool.......2001-07-26

"I've found lean-ISD to be a very useful reference tool and resource. After having been involved with CADDI consultants on a large scale application of the methodology at my last firm, I've taken on several recent projects in my new company using many of the methods, tools and templates of CADDI's PACT Processes for Training & Development. The book is designed so that I was quickly able to access the information I needed to provide my clients practical, timely and quality approaches to tackling their business issues. I highly recommend this book as a guide for business professionals challenged by either training and development, learning, knowledge management, or human competence development projects."

                            5 out of 5 stars lean-ISD.......2001-07-25

"lean-ISD takes all of the theory, books, courses, and pseudo job aids that are currently on the market about Instructional Systems Design and blows them out of the water.

Previous `systems' approach books showed a lot of big boxes and diagrams, which were supposed to help the reader become proficient in the design process. Here is a book that actually includes all of the information that fell through the cracks of other ISD training materials and shows you the way to actually get from one step to another. Guy adds all of the caveats and tips he has learned in more than 20 years of ISD practice and sprinkles them as job aids and stories throughout the book.

However, the most critical part of the book for me was that Guy included the project and people management elements of ISD in the book. Too often, ISD models and materials forget that we are working with real people in getting the work done. This book helps explain and illustrate best practices in ensuring success in ISD projects."

This Pocket Guide is a cartoon book with a serious message - it explores the world of commercial transactions: selling products and services. It will take the salesperson through the course of the sales process in an informative and entertaining way. 'Selling Services' and Products begins by establishing an understanding of the customers' needs and moves through getting an appointment to meet them, to the moment when the sale is closed. It examines the differences between selling services and products and consolidates that information by an exercise at the end of each chapter. Everybody constantly makes transactions of one kind or another, so the selling process embodies a fundamental human activity - the need to persuade somebody about something, so that both parties benefit. This book will profit not only sales executives, but everyone.

                                3 out of 5 stars Brief review.......2000-04-18

This was a relatively good book, although it exemplifies all the trouble associated with in-print analysis and market research. Since it was written a few years ago it's already become almost entirely outdated especially since it attempts to provide effective methods to understand an evolving audience. Nonetheless I would still recommend. For more practical and up-dated information I recommend Peter Clemente's work on changing web demographics: The State of the Net.

                                  Book Description

The purpose of Projects as Business Constituents and Guiding Motives is to describe and analyse the roles that projects play in business.
The editors, authors and researchers are convinced that projects are of significant importance at virtually every level of society, even though companies are the focus of this book. Projects are not merely conspicuous components of businesses, they in fact signal what businesses are all about. As you will see from some of the contributions to this book, these signals come in different forms and have different effects. Thus the various contributions to this book also mirror a kind of uncertainty as to what this phenomenon that is called project is all about.
Rather than trying to define what it `really is', the editors have opted for the alternative, namely to let some of the variation be replicated in the different contributions. One important reason for the variations is that each author wants to stress a different aspect of projectisation. The editors illustrate some of the variations as they appear in the minds of researchers and in the minds of those who work with projects every day. They believe that they do greater justice to the field by taking this stance at this stage in the evolution of project management.
The book is structured in four sections. The first section includes four chapters elaborating on various aspects of the roles projects play for shareholders, for management, for the global scene, and for the more or less continuous reorganising efforts that characterise most industries at the present time. The second section deals with how projects fit in with traditional business processes and the challenges that face project management as well as the generic business procedures. The third section brings forward some of the most essential matters when it comes to the future of business organisations. Innovation projects have a completely different character compared to traditional projects, and when entire industries go through thorough transformations, attending to project matters will be part of that change. One of the most often-repeated statements in business is that people matter; in the last section that statement is scrutinised in a projectised environment.
This volume has a wide international selection of authors. Eight different nationalities are represented. The collection is relevant to academics in business administration, project management and organisation behaviour. It should also appeal to a significant secondary audience: professionals in project management, business strategy and organisation.
