3 out of 5 stars Good but dated.......2006-08-04

This book provided a comprehensive primer on how to deal with all the issues surrounding an addition or renovation. While it offered lots of cost estimating advice and other tips, many of them were dated and not in line with the current economy. Not that I expected anything different! One thing the book didn't really cover well was the current trend toward builder/architect firms that marry both these specialities into one vendor. But all in all, a worthwhile investment for anyone considering building an addition or starting a renovation project (or both).

4 out of 5 stars Perceptive writing on renovation.......1999-10-07

This is a very good book, but the subtitle needs a small addition so that it reads: "A Home Renovation Survival Guide For The Affluent". The author, a contractor in Manhattan, is expert at dealing with problems most of us never have to deal with, such as the mob-influenced/socialist-inspired New York City building code and cutthroat clients poised to fleece him with the stroke of a pen. If you've got plenty of money and you want to spend it prudently on a renovation of your home, this is the book for you. If, on the other hand, you are strapped for cash and struggling to add space for a growing family, or you are interested in doing it yourself to learn things and save money, look elsewhere. This is a book for the elite. To John Rusk, there is a right way and a wrong way to do every project. If the right way is too expensive for you, then you should forget about it until you have enough money. Now, if most of us were to follow such advice, nothing would ever get done, except in the posh neighborhoods. Still, it's interesting to read, if only to find out how the other half (other tenth) renovates. The structure is composed of three parts: Rusk lays out his theory and methods in one; the other two are fictional narratives of a pair of young marrieds--one bright and the other foolish. The foolish ones get into squabbles with everyone from the architect to the carpenter; they are unfailingly pennywise. The bright ones, after a few missteps, submit to the Rusk method, and are rewarded with an excellent renovation. These fictitious episodes are naturally less dry than the how-to sections, and make for highly enjoyable reading at times. That technical contractual stuff may go over well at the Harvard B. School, but let's face it, it's not the kind of thing you want to read when you're gearing up for a big construction project. Most people I know would rather take the contract out of contractor. "Let's get on with it!" is their rallying cry. In just a few words, Rusk masterfully sketches the character of the "good" contractor: Giovanni DeTomaso, who sits, Brutus-like, sharpening his chisels and waiting for the phone to ring. As a sometime contractor myself, I relished the scene of the irate male of the bright couple being brought to heel. Mr. DeTomaso threatens to sever a support beam that was discovered inside a wall unless Mr. Finley shows more respect. All too often, we contractors allow clients to bully us just because it's their house. And the downward spiral of the foolish couple was also gripping in a morbid sort of way, reminiscent of the reversal-of-fortune plots of Dickens or Thackeray. As I read, I thought of how the foolish element could give an edge to "This Old House" when it gets dull. Imagine a Farrah Fawcett or Mary Tyler Moore character fighting with Norm Abrams over the placement of a sink. In fact, this could easily be expanded to a full-length feature where a couple of plutocrats from Manhattan or Cambridge receives its comeuppance from an unwashed pushy pair from Queens or Medford.

5 out of 5 stars clear, fun to read, full of useful information.......1999-06-18

John Rusk's book is easy, even entertaining to read, and full of insights into the motivation of home owners, architects and contracts. Don't start your project without reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Examples, Educational, Contractor perspective.......1998-06-12

As someone planning a remodel, I found this book to be very good reading and educational. The two examples of Good/Bad remodel are excellent. I learned alot. Then only negative thing I can say is that he had, in my opinion, a bias towards the contractors position (he is a former contractor). He tries to be fair and in general is, but with a little bias towards his former perception. That being said the book was great.

5 out of 5 stars A 'Must Buy' for those who are building or remodeling.......1998-04-26

Of all the books we've ordered to educate us for our upcoming home renovation/addition, this has been the best. After I read Rusk's book, I passed it on to my husband, so we'd be on the 'same page' when evaluating contractors. Subsequently, I bought 2 more copies, for the architect we're working with & contractor-TBD. The architect's finding great value in it as well. Together, we've been using this book to help us select the best contractor for our project. Rusk's advice is terrific & has been our bible.

I just went looking for Bad Times Primer to buy a back-up copy. Surprised to see it is available only from a few used book dealers. Bad Times and Survival Guns by Mel Tappan have been on my bookshelf for years and I have worn out at least one copy of each. This is a great overview of the subject of preparing for an uncertain and possibly unpleasant future. No Rambo stuff here just good solid information, not out of date in any way.

Remember the motto "Those who prepare to survive deserve to survive..."

1 out of 5 stars Information gleaned not worth the annoying banter.......1998-03-29

Sure, this book has some helpful hints and ideas, but it has got to be the most difficult book to read of any on the subject. The bulk of the book consists of parenthetical, smart ass digressions. Of 149 pages total, the book is 83 pages short and the other 66 pages are appendices of other books to read as well as films to see. They never do break down a "micro budget film" into $5000, $10000, or $25000 a day as their title suggests they will. My suggestion is to buy any other book on the subject (maybe even one they recommend in their appendix).

You don't need a degree in economics or mathematics and you won't need a personal accountant. This is not a budget that requires complex, time consuming, data entry, tracking, and number crunching. A few hours a month is all you need to turn your financial mess into financial success! In fact, you can start budgeting today! This simple approach to budgeting is designed with you in mind - flexible to work with under your schedule - not some pre-programmed process that requires you to begin at some specific point in time and enter exact information that may not even apply to your lifestyle.

It is initially created and set, grows and matures as it is worked, and then closed as it gives life to the next month's budget. You will also read about how to systematically rid yourself of those unwanted credit card bills, charge accounts, and consumer loans using simple methods that anyone can learn! At the end, you will read about higher principles of finances that you can use to dramatically improve your financial situation.

              Book Description

`Researchers interested in various aspects of college leadership and management will find this book a convenient and scholarly introduction to related research in the school sector' - Further Education Development Agency, College Research Journal

`Educational management has become an important academic subject. The contributors to this volume have gauaranteed its survival as such by undertaking this review in order that they and others working in the field may take account of a range of agendas and initiatives. The outcome must be a fresh stance and a new sense of direction to enable a study of educational managment to meet the needs of teachers and their schools in the new millennium' - Educational Research

Educational Management brings together important original contributions from leading thinkers in the field. Edited by some of the key figures in educational management today, chapters examine the following key areas: Has self-management achieved the success predicted for it?; What should be the nature of professional development for educational leaders?; to what extent can education benefit by drawing from practice in business and industry?; can theory inform management practice in education?; how can research contribute to educational improvement?; how can leaders help improve classroom practice?

Educational Management is one of the major outcomes of the ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) seminar series which aimed to redefine educational management in the light of the many developments in policy, practice, theory and research since the subject became established in the 1970s.

              Book Description

Smart Strategies Series This is a book of business strategy that draws together definitions and views on a hot new topic - visioning. Increasingly managers and firms, world-wide, are realising that their organisations need visions to map a way ahead for the future. Visioning is a strategic tool and this book defines it and explains how to implement it. Divided into two parts, the first section examines different interpretations of what is meant by visioning while the second section shows how to use it effectively for business success. Case examples of poor and positive practice are included.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Many ideas for improving performance.......2004-01-30

This book provides an overview of vision, visioning, leadership and examples of successful leaders but the authors warn us that little or no learning can be transferred from one organization to another because each requires its own distinct approach. Of all strategic management tools, visioning is usually rated first but satisfaction with its use receives a lower rating because a sound platform on which to grow a vision was missing. Visioning is the process by which leaders can articulate the future directions they wish to pursue, focusing on the future of the organization and its role in society. Forming a vision is a complex procedure involving a sophisticated process of discerning and equally sophisticated negotiations with all key stakeholders who need to be involved in achieving the vision. A motivating vision or one that produces "creative tension" implies innovation, departure from past practice and different organizational capabilities. In order to overcome indifference and resistance that major innovation provokes, a champion is required to identify the idea as his own, to promote it actively through informal networks and to risk his position and prestige to ensure the innovation's success. The champion must have the capacity to inspire and enthuse others with his vision of the potential of an innovation. A good place to start is to agree on what has been done well and what the group wants to continue to do well. A well-prepared vision should spontaneously help individuals to take decisions and free people to take initiative. The authors provide guidelines for promoting a shared perspective and generating a corporate vision.

One chapter is devoted to Allen Sheppard and GrandMet where the goal was to take a successful company, ensure it continued to be successful, and make it even more successful. Often this situation is more difficult than a typical turnaround, because people do not see the need to change. The top group developed a set of criteria for a vision statement that was so far reaching that it could not be publicized for two years but it led to the sale of 25 companies and the acquisition of Pillsbury. Another chapter presents the remarkable success story of Toray Industries and the role visioning played in its transformation in the decade from 1987. Describing the way in which vision works, H. Maeda said, "We keep the image in our minds at all times when we take decisions on various business matters. Keeping the picture of our company in say, ten year's time, we decide on management strategy and business policy. In a company of this size, the leadership of the president is absolutely crucial. He must be able to exercise his leadership at a fairly practical level, and have a management philosophy as well as an ability to manage. Another important quality he needs is the ability to win the hearts and minds of all employees and to inspire them to focus on the shared goal. I believe that a CEO must be prepared to hear everyone's views, let them discuss thoroughly matters that are important to management, and get totally involved in the process of building up consensus among directors. This will ensure that the future direction of the firm will become firmly established on shared values, but the important point is that there must be constant effort on the CEO's part to create and maintain a forum at which all directors can express their views freely to the CEO. There are many facets to leadership, but to put it simply, it is the ability of the leaders to anticipate what is coming, and the possession of the sense of balance in their judgement." Few people will read this book and not come away with ideas for improvement.

              Book Description

This handbook provides the reader with a full understanding of the elements of an ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS) and how to design and implement an EMS for themselves. To clarify and illustrate how an EMS works, the book provides real-world examples from five companies. The companies range in size from a small manufacturer with 30 employees to a multinational health products company with 42,000 employees. The book is presented in an easy to read format with plenty of tips, charts and quotes from EHS managers who have "been there, done that". A glossary of terms and useful websites is included.

5 out of 5 stars ISO Handbook Review.......2002-01-24

As an EMS project manager I found this book to very comprehensive with easy to follow case studies that were clear, concise and proved to be very valuable. So much of implementing an EMS deals with change management and this handbook lays out what changes an organization and skills a project manager needs to consider as it makes steps on this path toward ISO 14001 implementation. Another benefit is the excellent, easy to read examples created for each element of the standard providing a great starting point from which to take that leap! I recommend the handbook to others investigating environmental management systems.

              5 out of 5 stars Practical, Straight-forward Approach.......2001-02-22

Practical, straight-forward, simple approach to EMS implementation! We have used as part of our standard training with employee teams.

5 out of 5 stars Handbook for Implementing an ISO 14001 EMS: A Practical Appr.......2001-01-29

This handbood explains the elements of ISO 14001 and how to implement them in a clear and concise manner. The authors make the reader feel confident that they can implement an EMS no matter what their industry.

I like how they step through each element of the standard, explain what it means and then show how others have addressed that element with real world examples. We hear from environmental managers in five companies (from a small, Midwest tool manufacturer to a mulit-national pharmaceutical conglomerate) how they implemented their EMS. Actual copies of policies, aspects lists, management meeting notes and cost data as well as tips and advice are, sprinkled throughout the book. There is also a list or resources and related websites listed in an appendix.

This is an easy read (a plus for anyone with limited time) and would make an excellent addition to an EMS training package. I will recommend it to my membership.

5 out of 5 stars Handbook for Implementing an ISO 14001 Environmental.......2001-01-24

It is often the curse of wise, visionary ideas: When they're new and haven't yet gained widespread use or brand-name familiarity they somehow seem more complicated--and difficult to implement--than in fact they are. This "appearance" of complexity keeps well-meaning people or companies from moving ahead--and so progress stalls. For those directly involved, and for the rest of us.

Such is the case with ISO 14001, an elegant new way for organizations to bolster their bottom lines--and their communities' environments--at the same time. The ISO idea only seems complicated.

This book demystifies the seemingly arcane concept and makes environmental management systems readily accessible to smokestack industries, high-tech companies, even government organizations.

When I needed to understand the hows and whys of environmental management systems for a project I was working on, the straightforward language and clear design of this book made my education quick as well as thorough. It made what felt like a huge and complex undertaking seem not only manageable but worth doing.

Today, if I were implementing an EMS in an organization, I'd get copies of this book to all of my key people and make sure they had the time to read it and then discuss it together. I can't recommend this volume highly enough.

I've described the book as better than "Cliff Notes" but not a dissertation. We have clients requst bulk orders to use as training materials for their staff.

                Book Description

"This is an exceedingly long short book, stretching at least fifty thousand years into the past and who knows how many into the future." So begins Visions of the Future, the prophetic new book by eminent economist Robert Heilbroner. Heilbroner's basic premise is stunning in its elegant simplicity. He contends that throughout all of human history, despite the huge gulf in social organization, technological development, and cultural achievement that divides us from the earliest known traces of homo sapiens, there have really only been three distinct ways of looking at the future. During a period Heilbroner refers to simply as the Distant Past, stretching from prehistory to the appearance of modern nation-states in seventeenth century Europe, there was no notion of a future measurably and materially different from the present or the past. From the Stone Age to the Bronze, Mesopotamia and Egypt to Greece and Rome, and throughout the Middle Ages, a continuum of cultures and civilizations shared one defining expectation--the absence of any expectation of material progress for the great masses of people. Heilbroner maintains that it was not until the first stirrings of the period he refers to as Yesterday, spanning from roughly 1700 to 1950, that the future entered into human consciousness as a great beckoning force. Capitalism, continually reinvigorated by the seemingly endless forward march of science and an evolving sense of democracy, appeared to promise all levels of society some expectation of a future at least somewhat better than the past. It was this unwavering faith in the superiority of the future that separated Yesterday from the age we have now entered, that of Today. While we are still driven towards tomorrow by the same forces that determined the recent past, the lessons of Hiroshima and Chernobyl, the chaos in the former Soviet Union, the stagnation of the West, and the anarchic rage unleashed in our inner cities and in hot spots around the globe have brought on a palpable anxiety that is quite apart from both the resignation of the Distant Past or the bright optimism of Yesterday. In a brilliant conclusion drawing together the threat of nuclear blackmail, global warming and the growing commodification of life represented by video games, voice mail, and VCRs, Visions of the Future issues a call to face the challenges of the twenty-first century with a new resolve strengthened by the inspiration of our collective past.

                5 out of 5 stars Tour-de-force........2002-12-05

In this small book Robert Heilbroner succeeds in summarizing his vision on the history of mankind from the beginning to the ... future.
"Resignation sums up the Distant Past's vision of the future, hopefulness was that of Yesterday; and apprehension is the dominant mood of Today." (p.69)
His analyses are succinct, clear and on target.
His vision for tomorrow and after is more speculative:"a spectrum of capitalisms is the most probable political setting for the Western world over the coming of the next century, but that ultimately capitalism will exhaust its vitality, perhaps making way in some societies for a more egalitarian society and in others for more centralized and controlledones." (p.115)
I believe that capitalism will continue to be the dominant economic system in the far future, but that the proceeds of the successes of capitalism will be better distributed under the pressure of the democratic process.
But I agree with the author that in order to 'save' our planet, we need a stabilization of the population of the globe and a better protection of the environment.
A small, but important and stimulating book. Not to be missed.

2 out of 5 stars Inconsistent and lackes historical support.......1998-09-19

Most noticeable error in Heilbroners work is the lack of a reasonable historical support from which he arrived to his conclusions. Although Heilbroner may have provided a plausible conclusion on what things might imaginably be, especially in the field of economics from which he laid heavy emphasis in the last part, he failed to provide to the readers justification on his central concept of dividing the distant past, yesterday, today, and tomorrow. In short, the most contestable part of his study is the dating of the period. Going through the text repeatedly, I can almost say with certainty that no where in the book can we find a valid even justification on the timelines that separates the so-called distinctive eras of mankind. Much worse is Heilbroners summation of the mood of this era's stating that of the distant past as characterized by resignation, hopefulness that of yesterday and apprehension for today. One would marvel on the genius of the author on such summation in so brief a book, which poorly contains sufficient historical data, not even enough to assert clearly the division of time.

5 out of 5 stars A different vision of our visions........1996-10-12

Robert Heilbroner has again proven the insight which has made him one of the twentieth century's greatest economic minds. Now, Heilbroner has turned from ecnomy and focused his intellect on human perception of the future. He categorizes human history into four major eras: Distant Past, Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. He then goes on to illustrate how each era perceived the future and what it would bring. Using this, Heilbroner then postulates how our perception has changed and what the future may hold

                                    Amazon.com

Early on in his book, Enterprise.com, Jeffrey Papows cites this often-quoted statistic: annually 42 percent of the investment-capital base in the United States goes to information technology (IT). This 42 percent is something Papows should know about. As CEO of Lotus Corporation, Papows has a vested interest in the future of IT, and in Enterprise.com he sketches out the transformation of what he believes will affect the enterprise for years to come--the advent of the "market-facing enterprise." Thanks to the World Wide Web and the Internet, Papows asserts, this transformation will fundamentally recast the core activities of today's corporation and turn a company's focus from processes that are driven from within (i.e., back-office and front-office activities) to relationships with customers and suppliers outside the company. Papows discusses many examples of the shaping of this transformation, and also touches on issues important to IT professionals, such as productivity and standards.

                                    Book Description

From the CEO of Lotus, a bold vision of how information technology is transforming the nature of work, organizational design, and global economic performance.

"Anyone under the impression that information technology is done changing our world, our lives, or our business must read this book." -Scott McNealy, Chairman and CEO, Sun Microsystems

The ultimate insider's guide to the information economy, Enterprise.com offers an incisive and powerful vision of the technology revolution. From his vantage point as CEO of one of the most progressive and widely known software companies, Jeff Papows offers a rare glimpse into the future of business, society, and culture in a truly networked world. Showcasing the innovative application of information technology (IT) at Lotus and a wide variety of other companies, he explores such issues as why the Web has become the most overhyped but undervalued business tool and how the adoption of new technologies is forever changing the roles and responsibilities of educators, researchers, and general citizens. A must-read for anyone who wants to prosper in the information age.

3 out of 5 stars VG intro to success in "dot.com" using "real world" exp!.......2002-06-02

Let's start at the top - sure Papows was booted out of office for, among other things (such as non-performance), claiming to be a "Top Gun" Navy war hero pilot (complete with flightsuit that he kept in his office)- when he wasn't ... oppps! But then again, he did help build build Lotus into a world leadershipship position (before it crumbled after its acquisition - like most do).

While his personal inegrity leaves much to be desired, this is actually a very good book (testimony to a split personality or a *&#$ good ghost-writer). It clearly outlines how internet businesses need to capitalize upon the advantages of technology, while building their business upon the basic principles of good business anywhere. If only Mary Meeker, et al had read this book before the internet "bubble" burst ...!

While slightly dated, this is a worthy read for those interested in what the internet can and cannot do for their business.

This book should really be called "Why I love America and Lotus Notes. By Jeff 'Patriot' Papows."

After reading this very amateur attempt at writing a 'fact' based book, all I discovered was that this guy has a real attitude problem. Its not just the fact that he thinks that the USA is the bread and butter of the IT world (which is wrong), but he continually makes comments which highlight his arrogant and sometimes egotistical personality. For example he says ..

".. by industry leaders such as Lotus, Microsoft, Netscape, Intel, and Cisco .."

Is he kidding when he refers to Lotus as being an IT industry leader? Or is the fact that he is the President and CEO of Lotus got something to do with it .. ? You guess ..

Don't waste your time or money. Patriotic and corporate propaganda can be found at a lower price .. and with less reading time involved.

I haven't read this book but I thought anyone reading these reviews should know that the previous review is clearly about a book by Shapiro and Varian called Information Rules. For those of you who haven't read it yet - get it and memorize it. As for this book? I don't have a clue.

Those in need of a strategic guide to the network economy will find a wealth of valuable material in this book. The titles of its ten chapters suggest the nature and extent of subjects covered: The Information Economy, Pricing Information, Versioning Information, Rights Management, Recognizing Lock-In, Managing Lock-In, Networks and Positive Feedback, Cooperation and Compatibility, Waging a Standards War, and Information Policy. In effect, Information Rules combines all of the benefits of an operations manual with the counsel of two renowned experts who accompany the reader, step by step, through the manual.

According to the authors, the thesis of their book is that "durable economic principles can guide you through today's frenetic business environment. Technology changes. Economic laws do not. If you are struggling to comprehend what the Internet means for you and your business, you can learn a great deal from the advent of the telephone system a hundred years ago." That's true. The interdependence of information (software) and infrastructure (hardware) will always be important, indeed imperative. Therefore, interconnection battles are won only if, for example, local telephone companies in 1900 were interconnected with Bell to provide long-distance service and, 100 years later, browsers are interconnected with operating systems.

Who will gain the greatest value from this book? Owners/CEOs of small-to-midsize companies which are struggling to decide what to do...and what not to do...with opportunities created by the Internet and, more specifically, the WWW. Also, senior-level executives of much larger organizations (both for-profit and not-for-profit) who must formulate long-term strategies to achieve sustainable prudent growth.

For thousands of years, there has never been a shortage of available information but until the printing press, access to it was severely limited. Since then, a variety of media have broadened and deepened that access and, indeed, the volume of available information has increased exponentially.

Which strategies will be most effective when one faces such challenges? Those discussed and illustrated in Enterprise.com are worthy of careful consideration.

I was excited to get started reading this book because one got the feeling that this was a work by an important "insider" looking at the information revolution. It was singular disappointment. Much too much time has been spent talking about his experience at Lotus and far too little on the specifics of what the information revolution entails. Th examples are uninspiring, old news. I was terribly disappointed although it did show very brief flashes of excellence. Don't waste your money.
