Human Capital Over the Life Cycle synthesizes comparative research on the processes of human capital formation in the areas of education and training in Europe, in relation to the labor market.

The book proposes that one of the most important challenges faced by Europe today is to understand the link between education and training on the one hand and economic and social inequality on the other. The authors focus the analysis on three main aspects of the links between education and social inequality: educational inequality, differences in access to labor markets and differences in lifelong earnings and training. Almost all the stages in the life cycle are tracked from early childhood to stages late in the working life: firstly the characteristics and effects of schooling systems, then the transitions from school to work and, finally, human capital and the working career.

Perhaps outdated but offering ample food for thought is Sean Melvin's Y2K Business & Legal Survival Guide, which deals with handling the legal aspects of Y2K-related claims. The explanations of liability and computer law still apply.

Great statistics resource.......2007-05-01

I purchased this book as a requirement for my statistics class in the MBA program a few years ago. The textbook does not provide lengthy explanations or theories behind the methods but does provide excellent examples and solves problems showing each step. In addition to the book, the accompanying PhStat Excel add-in is excellent and very easy to use. The Excel add-in is also very handy should you need statistics in `real-life' (must better than whipping out a book). These two elements combined with an excellent teacher can be very effective. As with any statistics book, if you are not mathematically inclined, this book may seem difficult to understand.

All Around the Mountain..........2006-06-21

This book is mind-numbing, as are statistics in general. The authors used a lot of words to communicate their message, taking you "all around the mountain" to get where you need to be. You must do a lot of filtering while reading to get to the subject matter and understand the concepts.

this is one of the worst books I have ever encountered. if you actually want to LEARN statistics or any kind of math analysis, stay clear from this book. Conceptual explanation of the material is ABSENT. you will not learn anything except how to follow certain directions on excel. if you want to be more than just a low level manager who just follows directions, but one who actually wants to MAKE directions, then this book is not for you.

This book is not written with the student in mind. Your best bet - go to the library and pick up additional basic statistics books to aid in your understanding of the concepts and formulas.

Poorly Written and Confusing.......2004-12-22

This book does not help with understanding statistics. The examples are confusing and often point out a problem but never solve or resolve the problem. Don't buy this book!

Excellent Undergraduate-Level Stats/Excel Book.......2003-11-02

This textbook combines good readability and yet is also relatively detailed. Statistics For Managers Using Excel 3E is well organized, with plenty of examples that make understanding the concepts easy. The problems at the end of the Chapter are excellent at drilling the concepts in student's heads, and the companion CD is also useful.

I will agree with the reviewers that mentioned the errors. There ARE some errors in this book, but overall compared to most other texts there are NOT a lot of them relatively speaking.

Overall, an excellent textbook for students taking a beginning undergraduate level Stats course.

Blech - lots of errors, poor writing.......2003-09-13

I'm only through chapter 3, but I've found

* inconsistancies - not using the same term in the same manner; all through the chapter, it refers to class boundaries, but in the excersizes, they are called bins - you have to check out the solutions manual and figure out what they are asking for.

* circular definitions - using the term in the definition of the term you are describing (ie, frumious = being frumious)

* poor examples - when describing how to use an excel wizard to process data, it tells you to select E5:E12 - without describing what this range is supposed to be (bins? midpoints? data?)

* incorrect answers in the solution manual (some are right, some are not)

* PHStat does not function as specified in the book in all cases (ie, percentage polygons)

Frankly, the book is a big waste of cash, and should not be selected as a book to be used for statistics classes - unfortunately, neither the students nor the profs at the school I'm attending had a choice. I'm having a hard time believing this is a THIRD edition, with all the errors. Either the authors or the publishers can screw up on a first edition, but it takes an effort for both to do it, much less three times.

Too bad you can't give negative star reviews.

There is a newer edition out. However, the good thing about this one is the fact that they got a good Excel Section.

A worse textbook I have not seen. It's riddled with mistakes and misprints. The authors should be ashamed. The examples are virtually impossible to follow. Unfortunately, most students don't have a choice but if you do go with Statistical Techniques in Business and Economics (Mason, Lind & Marchal).

Excellent book for Managers.......2007-09-02

This is an excellent book for Managers or anyone studying statistics.Excel 2007 is being used extensively here which is a requirement for all stats students. There are some documentation errors or bugs with the calculations but they are minore. I hope the authors will rectify them in the next version.

Good textbook for business managers.......2007-06-10

Though I have not yet gone through the entire textbook, it does appear to be strongly oriented toward business managers. I actually purchased this book for review since I already had a graduate level statistics class about 10 years ago. I like this book because it teaches business cases. Also, the emphasis on using MS Excel was a big reason why I chose this book. One negative is that the quality of the manufacturing of this textbook is not great. I noticed a defect soon after recieving the product. However, I chose to live with the defect rather than send it back to the manufacturer.

Great reference book.......2004-06-16

I received this book as a gift, and really enjoyed it. I actually ended up reading it cover to cover, even though it is a reference book, just to see what is in here. There is some great information on different types of fishing all over the country, and in some foreign countries too. Also, there are sites on entymology, knots, and all kinds of miscellaneous but relevant information. Sure you could eventually find a lot of the sites yourself but it would take up a lot of time you could otherwise spend fishing!
