5 out of 5 stars good explaination in the book.......2007-10-15

each chapter is well written, not dry to read, easy to understand. although they should probably write a new version using office 2007 excel.

5 out of 5 stars The best intermediate to advanced statistics textbook.......2005-06-24

This textbook is the best intermediate to advanced statistics textbook currently available on the market today. The Excel instructions are self explanatory and include every step needed to apply a particular statistical procedure. The instructions for calculating joint probability tables and constructing tree diagrams are excellent and easy to follow. The example problems include all the steps. The notation used is simple, direct and straightforward. It will not cause any confusion for a student. The handling of p-values in hypothesis testing and multiple regression analysis is very well done.Based on my extensive teaching experience at the college and university level,I would highly recommend this book to a student, who is taking a statistics course that emphasizes applications, at the intermediate to advanced level.

If you buy this book thinking that it's an edition that contains more detailed information than that of the teacher's version...it's not.

Basically, it's the same exact version of the book as that of the student's edition. It just came straight from the publisher and the instructor didn't have to pay for it. So basically it's more like an evaluation copy.

Besides that it's a textbook...how else do you give a review on it?

                        Book Description

Toyota's spectacular performance in the competitive and mature auto industry has been attributed to many factors. They are: Toyota's corporate culture, Kaizen philosophy of continuous improvement, Kanban and Just-In-Time (JIT) production systems, zero defect goal, a lean production system, fast product cycle, ringi or consensus bottom-up decision making, pursuit of highest customer satisfaction, and high quality products. This research suggests that although all these measures contributed to the outstanding performances of Toyota over the decades, the real driver of Toyota's decisions and actions is Toyota's purpose.
The study concludes that Toyota is driven by corporate purpose. At Toyota, purpose is clearly understood and internalized by its senior management. The ideologies embodied in purpose provide a strong and unifying mechanism that stimulates the energies and efforts of its employees, and provides a moral compass to attain that meaningful, value-laden purpose of the organization.
Toyota's purpose is crafted in its stakeholders power structure, its environment, and its cultural values and assumptions. Toyota's purpose is to be a well-balanced global corporation that is a contributing member of the local communities. It strives to attain this by taking care of its employees, suppliers, and local communities, and by improving the quality of life of people in these communities. The main drivers behind Toyota's strategic key decisions are pursuit of harmonious growth and enhancement of profitability. Toyota's strategic decisions are linked through its key objectives to its operative purpose, which also is its stated purpose.

Nothing in business is more shrouded in secrecy and mystery than "doing the deal." The dealmakers themselves are usually flamboyant, the sums of money involved are vast, and the number of people who are affected by the deal are many. So it's no wonder that the media loves to cover stories like the QVC/Viacom battle over Paramount or Worldcom's recent takeover bids--deals like these can dominate headlines for days. Big Deal is about this high stakes game of corporate mergers and acquisitions. Author Bruce Wasserstein, himself a participant in many of these deals through his firm Wasserstein, Perella & Co., writes a highly readable and fascinating account that covers the history, personalities, and mechanics of mergers and acquisitions.

Wasserstein sees five waves of mergers beginning in the mid-1800s: the first wave involved the building of the railroad empires; the second in the 1920s saw a period of merger mania which was fueled in part by a frothy stock market and rapid industrial growth; the third wave happened during the "Go-Go Years" of the 1960s, which witnessed the rise of the conglomerate; the fourth occurred with the hostile takeovers of the 1980s, driven by names such as Icahn, Boesky, and Milken; and finally Wasserstein sees a fifth wave happening today. He attributes the current explosion of mergers and acquisitions to the need for companies to reposition themselves in today's ever changing competitive environment.

Wasserstein peppers the book with thumbnail personality profiles of some of the big dealmakers including Barry Diller, Sumner Redstone, Carl Icahn, T. Boone Pickens, and Bernard Ebbers. He also considers the many techniques and strategies employed by the dealmakers--poison pills, proxy fights, and bear hugs. Trends such as globalization, deregulation, and profound technological change are causing mergers and acquisitions to happen more than ever, and Big Deal provides a good foundation for understanding why and how these deals happen. --Harry C. Edwards

                          3 out of 5 stars okay book.......2007-02-05

I'm a banker. This book is about banking deals, no stories, no filler, just cases. Good read of you want to learn about older mega deals. I think if you are a non-banker you will be bored out of your mind reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Veritable Bible for Bankers.......2005-12-16

You will see this book and wonder how'll you finish an 800 pager like it in a reasonable ammount of time.

No worry -- this Bible of M&A is an engaging, informative read that will go by faster than you ever imagined.

I find myself recommending this book at least 3 or 4 X a year for people who want an overview of M&A in the late 20th century.

Instead of just spilling a bunch of historical data on the reader, Wasserstein dissects deals and tells us why things happened as they did.

My favorite part: the disastrous Quaker/Snapple merger!

Trust me, you'll love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! An incredible amount of great info in a single volume!.......2002-11-29

What an incredible resource! I bought this book because it was on the suggested reading list for a course on Corporate Control I took in the MBA program at the University of Michigan b-school. Yes, it is almost 900 pages long. Yes, some of the stories could use a bit of updating because of the recent events at places like Tyco and Worldcom. But so what? It is nice to have on record how people used to think and talk about these businesses and their CEOs.

That little tiny caveat aside it is important to focus on everything you get in this really neat book. You get a history of the different waves of the M&A process throughout history, how it has evolved, the way it has developed in different industries and market sectors, and a rather nice analysis (in the broadest strokes) of what goes in planning and executing these deals.

Throughout the book there are wonderful spotlights on the principle people in the history of M&A and little synopses of the more famous and important precedent setting deals. This aspect of the book is incredibly valuable. In order to make sense of what we read about in the paper about mergers and acquisitions we need to know how we got here. This book provides an incredible amount of wonderful background material. Some complain that the book is long. I think it is amazing that he has put so much in only 900 pages. Amazingly compact!

Mr. Wassertein, one of the industries movers and shakers (currently running Lazard), has organized this book in twenty-three chapters that are grouped in three large sections: (1) Past as Prelude, (2) The Strategic Challenge, and (3) Doing the Deal. Plus there is a nice bibliography (also grouped in according to these three sections) that can lead to further reading on the topics of interest to you. The index is also quite useful because this book can be used for reference in looking up or reviewing specific topics.

Yes, reading this book front to back is a great read, but you cannot remember it all the first time through. It is useful to be able to dive into specific deals, people, and topics. The author has put this book together in a thoughtful and helpful way.

If you want scandal and gossip, well, this book really isn't for you. However, if you are interested in the BUSINESS of M&A this is a six star book. It really is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely dry book.......2002-07-19

This book makes the Mojave look positively flush with water. Mr. Wasserstein addresses a fascinating topic--mergers and acquistions--with all the passion of a mortician.

Why the five stars? Mr. Wasserstein also happens to be a brilliant attorney, and have a remarkably substantive body of knowledge about innumerable large acquistions that have occurred over the past thirty years. Indeed, in his bibliography, he writes: "Much of the contemporary factual material in this book is drawn from memory." That is an especially impressive statement, given that the book weighs in at over 900 pages.

Read the book if only to be impressed at the mind of such a man.

Interesting side note: Mr. Wasserstein's sister is a Pulitzer-prize-winning playwright, Wendy Wasserstein. Her plays evince a passion utterly lacking in _Big Deal_.

                          5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2002-03-21

M&A tycoon Bruce Wasserstein has not just studied the high-stakes world of corporate mergers & acquisitions, he's lived it. As head of M&A at First Boston and then as leader of his own firm, Wasserstein has played a role in many pivotal corporate marriages. In these pages, Wasserstein comprehensively examines the hows and whys of history's largest deals. While skirting the fundamental question of whether mergers & acquisitions enhance or depress shareholder value over the long term, Wasserstein conveys an overwhelming amount of information about the dynamics and tactics that define M&A. The book is enormous and encyclopedic, so it might serve better as a reference text than a straight-through read. We from getAbstract strongly recommend this book for both its compelling historic accounts of Wall Street's most important deals and deal makers and its detailed breakdown of how the game actually works.

                              Book Description

This study chronicles the unique relationship between the Federal government and the American multinational corporation, integrating it into the mainstream of American political history. It is a record of continuous adjustment on the part of both parties as each side navigated the unchartered waters of this unconventional partnership. What makes it so relevant historically is that while the Federal government was adjusting to its postwar global responsibilities, corporate America in its multinational dimension was taking on new roles which redefined the international political economy. It involved international oil companies impacting our relations with the volatile Middle East, an economic Watergate of global dimensions, and an unresolved debate on public versus private responsibilities toward the Third World and its multiple economic and social problems. Objectively presented, America and the Multinational Corporation provides the historical context for tracking the various presidential perspectives from Truman to Bush as well as the various congressional initiatives to redefine business-government relations in terms of corporate America's most aggressive offspring--the multinational. Professor Reardon moves beyond the initial assessments of the multinational corporation vis-a-vis the Federal government, refusing to view it as a threat to the continued survival of the nation-state or as a force that the Federal government must tame at all cost. Rather, the partnership is a complex and continuously evolving relationship that may well be acquiring a new configuration as the world's economy becomes global rather than international. His study will be of interest to all students of contemporary American history as well as scholars in international political economy.

                                  Description:
Focusing mainly on the United States and Latin America, we aimed to identify the constructions of social reality held by the major stakeholders participating in policy debates about global trade, public health, and health services. In a multi-method, qualitative design, we used three sources of data: research and archival literature, 1980-2004; interviews with key informants who represented major organizations participating in these debates, 2002-2004; and organizational reports, 1980-2004. We targeted several types of organizations: government agencies, international financial institutions (IFIs) and trade organizations, international health organizations, multinational corporations, and advocacy groups. Many governments in Latin America define health as a right and health services as a public good. Thus, the government bears responsibility for that right. In contrast, the US government's philosophy of free trade and promoting a market economy assumes that by expanding the private sector, improved economic conditions will improve overall health with a minimum government provision of health care. US government agencies also view promotion of global health as a means to serve US interests. IFIs have emphasized reforms that include reduction and privatization of public sector services. International health organizations have tended to adopt the policy perspectives of IFIs and trade organizations. Advocacy groups have emphasized the deleterious effects of international trade agreements on public health and health services. Organizational stakeholders hold widely divergent constructions of reality regarding trade, public health, and health services. Social constructions concerning trade and health reflect broad ideologies concerning the impacts of market processes. Such constructions manifest features of ''creed,'' regarding the role of the market in advancing human purposes and meeting human needs. Differences in constructions of trade and health constrain policies to address the profound changes generated by global trade. de.

I was really excited about this book and was totally dissapointed. Much of the book is outdated on loading pics, etc-the Internet moves and changes at the speed of light. You can learn just as much on eBay's help (free). He's making money off eBay-by selling information that is free-that's the whole concept of the book. Don't sell a product unless it's information. No cost to you - it's basically how to sell/scam "information poor" folks. Do your homework on the Internet and save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, Fun Auctioning Know-How.......2001-12-11

I just started the book and so far it's great! The book is short, fast paced and had me involved from the get-go. It doesn't seem to leave out much about the auctioning process as it covers every aspect of auctioning for the absolute beginner to the advanced practitioner who outgrows or supplements their auctions by spinning-off into their own cyber-store. Amazing that this author can fit all this information in such a small space but, owing to his clean, crisp writing style, the material is presented in such a logical structure that what he writes is almost intuitive as your mind races forward and arrives at his conclusions seemingly before he does. He makes auctioning childishly simple. His use of exercises and the help of the enclosed CD had me building my auctioning empire from the first chapter.
The only misgivings I have concern the CD. First, a couple of the Internet links have changed - which is expected from any list of links that are more than a day old. A search engine ferrited out the needed sites. However, other sites simply no longer existed as the companies merged with others. Secondly, when I hit a link to a site I was transported to the site via the CD's enclosed browser. The problem is that the CD browser divides the screen into three equal vertical strips. The intended web site occupied only the middle strip. The left and right portions of the screen had menus displayed on them. The web site, reduced to a little sliver, was simply too awkward to work with and the URL of the site couldn't be found anywhere. Again I had to use the search engine to locate the web sites so that I could visit them in their full, un-enclosed beauty, using the Netscape or Explorer browsers.

These minor glitches weren't enough to distract me for long. I highly recommend this enjoyable book written in a conversational style. It's educational. It's fun. It's probably tax deductible.

I love this book and I am still reading it. I have learned alot from it. The only problem is I am very new to conputers and ebay so a lot of the terms I did not undestand. Since it assumes the reader knows what a url is or a pim or where the clipboard is
, But I was able to get help from a friend . The cd was great I now can put up a great html auction and when I emailed the author he was kind enough to reply . I am not sorry i bought this book and will refer to it often.

Michael Weber is an effective teacher who makes the reader feel like they've known him for years. Rather than speaking down to his audience, he graciously shares his own experiences good and bad. Many technologically advanced persons lack the ability to teach. Michael Weber possesses both outstanding qualities.
This is a book that will not disappoint you!

I have sold on ebay for over a year now. I really thought this book was very interesting. I started reading it and just could not put it down until I read the whole thing. I picked up lots of helpful information. I am spreading the word.

With a refreshingly honest approach to the subject, Kim Komando treats making money online like any other type of business venture. Rather than revealing super secrets, she applies good business sense, good business logic, and good business practices to the specific requirements of the online environment.

First, Komando candidly discusses the basic theory of online business and the necessary equipment. Then she moves to the specifics, from understanding customers and what makes them buy to selling products as compared with selling information or services. Komando gives guidelines on where to set up shop and how to become a Web master with a business-building mentality. From there, Cyberbuck$ discusses advertising, including how to place it, and what elements make for a good ad. Pay attention to the section on advertising by e-mail; Komando shows how you can get a bad online reputation for junk e-mail if you're not careful.

The section on building and maintaining customer loyalty is vital information for the long-term success of any business and twice as important in the mercurial world of cyberspace. The closing section conveys related issues that you must know to protect yourself, such as copyrights, security, and a host of legal and safety matters that can make or break a business. An enclosed CD-ROM offers the entire book in hypertext format.

                                              Book Description

Hailed as a "one-person PC industry," Kim Komando is one of the best-known personalities in computing -- and there's no better authority when it comes to showing how online technologies can or can't help your company succeed. In CyberBuck$, Komando shares her expertise and offers practical, how-to strategies you can use for marketing, selling, and communicating in ways that make the Internet's global reach and one-to-one marketing work for your business.

Plus, on the book's bonus CD-ROM, you'll find invaluable resources, including the contents of the book in special hypertext format, information on how Komando staff can create and host a Web page for you, and a one-month trial membership with America Online.
