Absolutely the definitive book on Taguchi Methods!.......1999-02-14
What a shame this benchmark title is already out of print! Of all the books on Taguchi's Design methods, this is the one worth having. Any individual or company that wants to achieve robust product design should read Ealey's book. And any astute publisher who wants to be THE source for Taguchi Methods information, should pick up the rights to "Quality by Design: Taguchi Methods and U.S. Industry." Somebody please do the industrial world a favor -- put this book back in print!

Mierzejewski examines the life and service of Ludwig Erhard (1897-1977), West Germany's first minister of economics and second chancellor. Erhard liberalized the German economy in 1948 and is generally considered the father of West Germany's "economic miracle"--the period of extraordinary growth in jobs and improvement in the standard of living in the 1950s that helped stabilize Germany's first successful democracy.
While recent scholarship has dismissed Erhard's influence on Germany's economic recovery, Mierzejewski returns to little-cited German analyses and Erhard's own record and concludes that Allied currency reform and Erhard's liberalization of the economy were crucial triggers for Germany's unprecedented economic boom. Too Much Guesswork?.......2000-05-01
I used this book in as a simulation in my Business Strategy class at HLG. I think that the simulation was basically useless because there was entirely too much guesswork involved. There is no mention of what type of product is being manufactured, only that is made out of plastic. When making decisions such as how much to invest in product quality it would have helped quite a bit to know the specific type of product being produced. For example, quality is for more important when producing laptop computer cases than when producing toy army men. I think that the lack of specific information concerning the product and the market are the downfall of this book. The simulation would have been far more enjoyable and beneficial if informed decisions could be made.
Threshold Competitor.......2000-04-11
I thought that this textbook satisfied our needs of what our tasks were for the course. At first the book was somewhat difficult to understand, but after reading through various parts several times, I began to get a feel of what was to be expected to compete with the other companies.

I thought that this simulation was a good shot at getting as close to the real world without going out into it. I think that there were parts that could have been perfected but over all it was a good simulation and I would recomend it to other buisness majors. I enjoyed the competiton that it created and it was fun getting the results back to see who was on top each time.

The handbook was helpful and easy to understand. The software was somewhat hard to understand. It would have been helpful to know what the rating system was before we started. Also more information on how to forecast sales might be helpful. I learned from the experience how to work together to accomplish a task. I would recommond this book to anyone in business.
What About This?.......2000-04-06
I was given the assignment of working through and operating a business in the Threshold world. When I got into it I realized that many things were not accounted for in this world. The simulation starts you off in an industry that no one has been in yet. This is very unrealistic in today's world. The simulation also does not give you any information on what the economy is doing or what your competitor, if any, are doing. In the real world you would be able to tell a little bit about what other are doing but not in the Threshold world. The last thing that I did not like is that there is no customer loyalty or repeat buyers. Every quarter you have to find new customers and the old customers never come back. My understanding of a simulation is a make believe world that is very close to the real world. If this is true then Threshold is the worst simulation I have every worked with.

General guidelines available to revegetation planners focus on the spatial context and dimensions of the revegetated site. However, site-specific habitat factors can have overarching importance for habitat value, especially where interactions with competitors or predators may play an important role. Current revegetation projects in Australia which aim to restore slow-growing buloke (Allocasuarina luehmannii) woodland, a threatened habitat important for bird conservation, usually include faster-growing eucalypts in plantings. This research aimed to identify whether eucalypt presence in buloke woodland facilitates invasion by the noisy miner (Manorina melanocephala), an aggressive competitor that is absent from pure buloke woodland. Birds were surveyed in buloke woodland remnants that contained eucalypts as a sub-dominant species at densities of 0-16 per ha. The probability of noisy miner presence in buloke woodland increased markedly where eucalypts were present at a density of approximately five per hectare. The presence of noisy miners resulted in a substantial difference in bird assemblage structure and composition. Small-bodied insectivorous birds which are experiencing population declines in southern Australia were recorded on average six times more often in transects without noisy miners (low-eucalypt density transects). Avian behaviour and habitat use was also altered, with birds flying more frequently in transects where noisy miners were present. A minor difference in habitat composition results in substantial degradation of the conservation value of non-eucalypt woodland in eastern Australia due to invasion by aggressive avian competitors. Revegetation and restoration practices should take into account the potential for such subtle floristic differences to result in substantial variation in conservation outcomes.
