A good primer and introduction to concepts in ODD........2001-05-17

This is not an end all be all book, but it provides very good insight into ODD and design of teams. It is easy to read and containts many relevant concepts that are in practice today. A friend of mine (With a Masters in OD) referred this book to me as not only an introduction for myself into the complexities of ODD but to use with clients in talking about the subject. If your new to the concepts of Org Design or are looking for a book to share with others, this is a very useful (and easy) read.

Bringing Practicality to Esoteric OD Practice.......2000-04-06

The book is written for those managers who would like to develop higher levels of performance in their organisation but aren't sure how to go about it. It addresses both types of people, the manager of a business unit and also organisational consultants who looks for tools to help others manage.

The book focusses on how to implement various theories to get better results, and therefore is more of a 'how-to' book rather than being comprehensive in treatment of concepts. The how-tos concern two aspects of design , (1) the rational part, including identifying the desired organisational model, structuring the various design elements to produce the required results, and assessing one's progress at any point of time and (2) the emotional part including educating membersabout organisational alternatives to the bureaucratic model, developing their commitment and support for the model actually chosen , changing habits and practices to fit with the "model system", maintaining commitment "when the going gets tough", and renewing the model when circumstances require it.

Creating high performance in the face of relentless environmental change requires an organisation to redesign itself so that it is capable of sustaining efficient, high quality performance through time. The ability and capability to adapt as performance requirements change must be ingrained in the fibre of the organization.

The book contains a lot of case studies that seek to clarify and demystify the practical delineation of what it takes for an organization to self-design. It also looks at the components of the design process: gaining knowledge, determining values and diagnosing the organization. It also touches on the "zero-sum" designing in which the design team starts with a blank slate rather than with an already existing organisation. The book also describes the action learning sequence of implementing, assessing and iterating. This reiterates the need for hedging against uncertainity and stresses innovation.

An important part of the book refers to what transition roles and structures are necessary. One chapter is devoted to the special challenge of self-design that entails large-scale change.

The book targets two primary audiences. The first is line managers, who must know how to lead an organisation through the self design process. The second audience is the change agents-OD professionals, consultants, and facilitators-who are resources to organisations that are redesigning themselves.

A modern atlas contains not just one but several maps of any part of the world. One map shows the political divisions, another the physical features, another the natural resources, another the population distribution, ad so on. With the alignment of these overlays, the relationship among the various dimensions becomes clearer, for example, between resources and political division. As designers gain experience as organization cartographers, they will create multiple maps of their organization with each overlay adding additional features to the total picture. As they add more data and fill in the incomplete parts of the map, they will better understand the relationship among the parts of their organization.

One of the best books I've ever read on school improvement........1997-10-07

Duffy's approach to school improvement is cutting-edge and practical. In this book, he provides detailed guidance on how to plan and carry-out a complete redesign of an entire school system. In particular, I found Chapter 14 to be very interesting and exciting. This is where he describes a new approach to school improvement he calls Knowledge Work Supervision (KWS). KWS, Duffy says, is a process that aims to improve three sets of key school system variables: how the work gets done, the social architecture of the school system, and the system's relationship with its broader environment. Great stuff! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is responsbile for planning and carrying out school improvement on a systemwide basis. Culain Corcoran
