I think it is good practice book. Give you a lots of exams, but i agree that it does have many errors.

1 out of 5 stars Contains too many errors.......2003-06-10

I have bought this book especially for the quantitative section, because its verbal section didn't seem very helpful (a five page word list for the GRE is ridiculous).

The math review contained so many errors, some of which are downright misleading, for example the book gives a very inaccurate definition of prime numbers and does even more - it states several times that 1 is a prime number. Trust me, it is not! But if you didn't know that, you would probably miss most questions involving prime numbers. So if you like loosing points because your prep book was full of errors, go ahead and buy this book, nobody will stop you.
Besides that, the practice exercises, and again I'm referring to the quantitative section, are too easy and don't reflect the level of the real GRE with regard to difficulty and timing.
Finally, the CD-ROM contains about the same information as in the book, so don't expect too much of it.

If you are serious about studying for the GRE I would recommend that you use Barron's "How to Prepare for the GRE test" which is terrific, and of course you want to practice on official tests published by ETS.

2 out of 5 stars Somewhat informative, but not the best.......2003-05-14

I've been spending the past few weeks studying for the GRE. I've read the majority of the books out there that tell how to study for the exam. And I've found that the Arco book is not very good. While it may have numerous practice problems, it does not contain very much information about how to solve the problems. For example, when it comes to antonyms, the book suggests that if you don't know the meaning of a word, click (C) and move on. I advise reading the Kaplan book. It was by far the most informative of the lot.

          Book Description

The Knowable Future examines the science underlying futures prediction as a formal venture and as an informal activity. It explains how left brain rationality and right brain psychic abilities are both used in conjunction with forebrain governing capacities. Loye advances a theory of how the future is shaped by and predicted according to the “matrix impact” of liberalism, conservatism and five other major factors of ideology.

3 out of 5 stars Predicting the Future.......2005-02-18

Loye's book, "The Knowable Future: A Psychology of Forecasting and Prophecy," is an engaging read, yet some readers will still be disappointed with it. The summary on the back of the book is misleading claiming that Loye is going to give information on forecasting methods that will help many professionals predict the future.

Loye covered a variety of topics. The reading was never boring, as it moved smoothly from anecdotes of historical figures who have accurately predicted the future, to an explanation on how predictions are affected by using the left and/or right hemispheres of the brain, and finally the psychological processes that we, as humans, use to arrive at certain predictions. The most interesting theory that Loye brought up was that dreams often foreshadow our futures.

The biggest concern that I had was the looseness of terminology that Loye uses. The book claims to apply to forecasting, yet forecasting, being an informed decision that comes after examining multiple perspectives, is not described in Loye's work. What Loye depicts are predictions that come from mostly cognition, and less knowledge.

I am inclined to recommend readers to take a look at this book. It is an enjoyable read that is brimming with intelligence. I just warn readers that if they are looking for a scientific approach to forecasting, you might want to look elsewhere.

          Book Description

This quirky, fast-paced excursion through the world of statistics brings basic statistical concepts down to earth for general readers by showing how statistics are applied in our everyday lives. Drawing on such diverse examples as how pills are manufactured, elections are forecast, and chess tournaments are structured, psychologist Joseph Tal familiarizes readers with variables, means, medians, scales of measurement, sampling, estimating, and other stock-in-trade tools of the statistician. An unusually lively, informal review of statistical concepts Reading Between the Numbers:
          • Features dozens of fascinating, often whimsical examples drawn from real life and literature, and 100 vivid graphs and tables
          • Makes statistics fun and easy for general readers interested in numbers
          • Is the ideal quick-study guide for those who need to learn statistical methods for their jobs
          • Focuses on the psychology behind statistics, rather than problem-solving • Is based on the author’s popular professional workshops and seminars

5 out of 5 stars Simply necessary for laymen in the modern world........2006-08-23

Best explanation of statastics basics I have come across. Gives anyone with basic math, and I do mean basic, a good understanding of statistics. How it can be appropriately used, what the basic concepts are and how to understand results you see from others. As well as how powerful a tool it can be in many areas of life if you only know the concepts.

I think statistics on this level should be required education for anyone exiting high school. So many times stats are thrown about and without some knowledge you dont' know what makes sense and what doesn't. This book would give you that knowledge. And anyone without this level of knowledge in the modern world cannot really call themselves educated.

          4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2006-04-01

One of the clearest explanations of basic statistics I have read. The author goes to great lengths to explain the issues pros and cons behind measures of central tendency and variation, in a way that is accessable to the layman. HE doesn't feel the need to fill each page with statistical Notation which is refreshing, and gives a lucid description of the difference between Parametric and non Parametric methods, the concept of which I think has escaped even the most seasoned statistics user. Goes all the way to Analaysis of Variance without hardly an equation. The style is more than a little quirky, (the Historical and literary preambles to some of the later chapters may frustrate some) but i'm OK with that. Good job Joseph

5 out of 5 stars A New Angle on an Old Topic.......2001-04-10

As a professional chemist, I do not look back on the statistics courses I took with particular fondness. While I didn't find them very difficult, neither did I feel that provided me with any deep insights. It was with this, lukewarm attitude that I first picked up Reading Between the Numbers. And then I noticed Chandler's quotation in one of its early chapters. Statistics and Chandler?! This must be interesting. I purchased the book and wasn't disappointed. I found the statistical concepts explained in a way that is both simple and insightful. And the book reminded me that I should have reviewed the topic, which is so important for my work, long ago. But I found the book unique in other ways as well. First, the book is relevant - there is not one concept in it that is not in some way connected to the real world. The author takes special care to show how and why statistics is important in both our professional and everyday lives. The concepts in Reading Between the Numbers are related to applications and vice versa, so that I can now see both sides in a new and more interesting light. Above all, I now feel that the ideas underlying statistics are more accessible to me than before. Second, as in many fields, the more advanced topics are based on earlier ones. And throughout, that author provides reminders of the basics so that I didn't find myself having to return to earlier chapters in order to understand later ones. It seems to me that author was simply sensitive to the needs of nonprofessional readers, which is a rarity in professional books. Finally, Reading Between the Numbers a joy to read. It is written as fiction rather than science and is often very funny. That the author has a rather quirky sense of humor is clear. That he has succeeded in combining it with statistics seems to me no small achievement.

                Book Description

The Ephemeral Civilization is an astonishing intellectual feat in which Graeme Snooks develops an original and ground-breaking analysis of changing sociopolitical forms over the past 3,000 years. Snooks challenges the prevailing theories of social evolutionism with an innovative approach which also looks ahead to the twenty-first century. The book builds on the model of dynamic strategy outlined in the author's highly acclaimed companion volume, The Dynamic Society.

Divided into three parts, the book provides a new theory based on extensive historical study, focusing on three types of civilization--conquest, commerce, and technological--and outlines probable future changes.

5 out of 5 stars Institutional scholars everywhere: Professor Snooks would like a word with you........2005-08-25

In this powerful extension of his earlier work, Graeme Snooks takes aim at what he calls "the myth of social evolution". Put another way, Snooks has once again ridden into battle wielding his demand driven model, and the direct opponent of his charge is institutional social science.

I have to admit that before I encountered Snooks' work, I was an avowed institutionalist myself. Douglass North and Mancur Olson occupied prominent spaces on my bookshelf and in my heart. I was content that institutional change was one of, if not the, motive force of economic development.

Reading Snooks changes all that. The supply-side shackles melt away. Snooks great contribution is that he cogently argues that dynamic demand must be given primacy in the analysis of human behaviour, and by extension, the analysis of the secular rhythms of life itself.

But Snooks is about process as much as he is about outcomes. As his earlier work attests, the deductive method of twentieth century social science is a wrong-headed approach to tackling real-world problems. The correct model is an inductive one - empirical, existential - that has explanatory power in a backward and a forward direction. The `true' model may not be exactly as Snooks has defined it. But given the chasm between Snooks' methodology and the ahistorical approach of his orthodox deductive opponents, one can safety say his work is a material advance upon existing `grand theories' of economic and social development.

If the law is the egg, and the demand for law is the chicken, then Snooks has resolved the eternal riddle in favour of the fully-realised fowl.

I realise that these book reviews are supposed to serve mainly to critique the authors' abilities to impart knowledge on the given subject matter (and the case of this book that was done well) but I thought it was important to also comment on the subject matter itself.

Firstly, on the quality of the book; this book is well written, covers a lot of ground and I would recommend it to people of almost any level of technical expertise wishing to use PayPal.

However, after learning the nuances of PayPal, I have to say that I am not completely sold. The PayPal service, although offering some excellent tools for web developers and non-developers alike, has quite a concerning "Big Brother" air about it that does not instill confidence in me to trust my money with these people. Reading PayPal for Dummies prompted me to dig a little deeper into the terms and conditions of PayPal as well as seeking out other people's experiences with the service to find some disturbing feedback (try www.paypalsucks.com to start with).

Of course a company as large as PayPal is going to be the target of some flack but when we're talking about the potential loss of control over one's personal funds (large amounts in some cases), this brings a whole new level of concern.

All in all, PalPal has the potential to be a great service but, at the moment, has a way to go before it wins my trust.

PayPal is much more than a payment system for eBay. This is a wonderfully comprehensive book on the capabilites of PayPal. After reading this book I am going to use PayPal to accept credit card payments for my Web-based business.

This book presents an overview of recent developments in social choice theory and welfare economics, drawn from the proceedings of the eighth conference in the International Symposia in Economic Theory and Econometrics series under the general editorship of William Barnett. The volume is divided into four parts, each exploring broad themes in social choice theory and welfare economics: an overview of the subject's historical development, a discussion of the ethical aspects of social choice, a study of the algebraic and combinatorial aspects of social choice theory, and an application of mathematic theory to several case studies.

                                  Book Description

"Key skills for marketers in the 21st century, which we have now cautiously embarked upon, conjures up images of great technological advances, of a world utterly transformed, a world perhaps ultimately dominated by Artificial Intelligence. This book thankfully does not indulge in the whole "what might be" debate, but instead sensibly takes a long hard look at where marketing stands today, setting out the key skills marketers must master to succeed over the next decade or so.

Written by CIM's Director of Marketing, Ray Perry, in a very accessible, sometimes amusing manner, the book outlines the evolution of marketing basics in the 20th century before swiftly moving on to the issues that face the 21st century marketer. These range from the proliferation of media and the choices this now presents the marketer, to consumers' concerns over privacy and data protection. These and other key themes are outlined, demonstrating how they will impact and shape the marketing function. What becomes clear is that in order to succeed in the future, "marketers will need to be flexible, adaptable and multi-skilled". Pan-marketing, measuring metrics, knowledge management, CRM and integrated supply chain management will all be important, and it is likely many of them will become specialist marketing roles in their own right.

The case for each role is argued well and supported by a range of well-researched figures and examples, before giving sound advice on how to execute the role. The chapters on the media marketer and metrics marketer are particularly good. Key skills and competencies are laid out with a useful summary of things to remember. The book will help today's marketers face up to the challenges of the 21st century, and help them develop the marketing skills they need for the new connected economy." --John Ling, The Chartered Institute of Marketing

"Ray Perry looks at the wider perspective of new marketing and identifies key success factors - a good read for all marketers" --Andy Jones, Marketing Operations Director, Vauxhall Motors

"To business people this is a breath of fresh air, a disciplined and data driven approach to marketing" --Raoul Pinnell, VP Global Brands Communications, Shell International

"Marketing Unwrapped captures the key issues and challenges facing marketers today and the wider skill set required as marketing increasingly becomes a boardroom issue." --Debbie Brown, Head of Marketing Communications BT plc

The marketing function has long striven to be taken seriously at board level. Much work has been undertaken in recent years to measure the effectiveness of marketing and to make it accountable at 'the bottom line'. However, if marketing is really to find its place at the top of an organization, marketers themselves need to understand and develop some core skills to give credence to their positions.

Marketing Unwrapped literally unwraps the role of today's marketer. Ray Perry creates a blueprint for each facet of the marketer's role in relationship to an organization and highlights the key skills, knowledge, disciplines and competencies necessary for marketers to succeed. Compiled in the form of a matrix, this book unwraps the role of a marketer and introduces the range of 'co-functions' from relationship marketer to metrics marketer that the marketer will need to master to succeed in business in the future.

This step-by-step guide to developing your own portfolio of skills will give you the confidence to sit at board level with a holistic understanding of the workings of business in general, and a clear idea of the difference you in your marketing capacity can make.

This book constitutes a significant contribution to the debate on industrial development and the role of small firms in India, in the context of economic liberalization and rapid technological change. Situated in the wider international debate on flexible specialization, this collection of studies by sociologists, economists and social anthropologists suggests how clusters of small, technically and economically independent firms can provide jobs and help achieve economic growth.

5 out of 5 stars Practical insights about "rebooting" technical staff.......1999-08-21

Information Technology organizations too often assume that they can solve productivity and effectiveness problems simply by installing new tools and mandating their use. Mr. Merlyn, et. al., offer powerful insights into why you can't reboot systems *people* as easily as you can reboot the systems they work on. This book provides theoretical/philosophical context coupled with practical advice for addressing the challeges of change management in a technology context. I highly recommend this book for CIOs and technology leaders at any level.
