          Book Description

This book is not just about learning statistics but also about using it. It is developed for professionals who make frequent use of statistics but do not have the time and/or the technical expertise to sit down and read some of the more complex texts on statistics. The focus here is on hands-on application or in fact, "do it yourself" approach. It is also based on the use of Microsoft Excel for Windows. Most computer users have Microsoft Office with Microsoft Excel for Windows so why not make use of its features? Statistics As Easy As 123 with Microsoft Excel for Windows has been tested and applied in a university setup. It is based on simple data collection process and an analysis of the same data starting from descriptive statistics through multiple regression analysis and nonparametric statistics. It is purposely designed to use a simple data collection process and to focus on the 123s or ABCs of statistics. It does not pretend to be an advanced book on statistics but a grassroots book to get the fear of statistics out of you and get you to start using statistics in decision making. The book is precise and not unnecessarily wordy so you can quickly get to use statistics. Professionals such as doctors, health practitioners, engineers, social scientists, and business professionals will find this book a good refresher or reference book to basic concepts in statistics.

                Book Description

"Who controls corporations?" is perhaps one of the central questions of power structure research. Ralph M. Faris seeks to answer that question and more specifically "Who controls Delaware Valley corporations?" through a sustained study of the formal ties between corporations commonly referred to as "interlocks." Corporate Networks and Corporate Control provides empirical evidence of the nature and extent of interlocking directorates among Fortune 500 and Fortune 50 ranked corporations within that area. Faris generates a profile of nationally and locally oriented multiple interlockers to compare with current sociological descriptions of the national ruling class and identifies forty-eight multiple-interlockers along with data on their connections to policy-setting groups, sociocultural organizations, and religious denominations. This scaled-down but more descriptive version of a larger national study of Fortune 500 companies takes a comprehensive look at the affiliations of Philadelphia's corporate network including memberships in elite private clubs, policy-setting groups, and more. Tables and figures make the interlocking connections particularly accessible. In early chapters, Faris gives one of the clearest expositions of three different theoretical models of corporate control--Managerialism (and its more recent version, Resource Dependency), Class Cohesion, and Finance Control--and explains their distinct patterns of interlocking. Subsequent chapters give a complete picture of the methodologies of interlock analysis, including previous methods and approaches, and present a clear rendering of the facts of data collection and the geographical focus. The last two chapters examine closely the Delaware Valley's corporate network and multiple interlocks in the context of power structure research using the actual data base of interlocking directorates in the Delaware Valley to measure the accuracy of the three models in predicting their respective patterns. This top-notch investigation makes an outstanding contribution to the fields of Economics and Economic History and will be a source of authoritative information for courses in political sociology, political economy, introductory economics, and power structure analysis in political science.

                          Book Description

The recent rapid changes in the business environment challenge computer science to develop novel interrelated information and communication technologies and to bring them in accordance with the social needs of cooperating user groups as well as with management requirements of private and public organisations. This book takes the modern customer-driven and groupwork-oriented perspective on business process organisation and reengineering: extending the language-action perspective from the CSCW field, its customer-oriented view of workflows enables new ways of business process analysis and design. This leads to powerful new combinations of information and cooperation technologies.

                          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A good book for talking about workflow management systems!.......2000-05-20

This book takes another perspective, that of the modern customer-driven and groupwork-oriented process organisation. Extending the language-action perspective from the CSCW field, its customer-oriented view of workflows enables novel kinds of business process analysis, and leads to interesting new combinations of information and cooperation technologies.

                              Book Description

                                  Book Description

In recent years many countries have experimented with extending the role of market forces in their state schooling systems. These changes have often produced fierce debates about their rationale and consequences, not least because of their origins in a specific political and economic philosophy. The basis of this philosophy is economic liberalism: a belief in the efficiency of the market as a rationing and allocative mechanism. This book examines the appropriateness of this belief for schooling markets.

                                          Book Description

This important contribution to comparative economic history examines different countries' experiences with different monetary regimes. The contributors lay particular emphasis on how the regimes fared when placed under stress such as wars and/or other changes in the economic environment. Covering the experience of ten countries over the period 1700-1990, the book employs the latest techniques of economic analysis in order to understand why particular monetary regimes and policies succeeded or failed.

                                            Description:
The long-run relationship between nominal interest rates and inflation is examined, allowing for structural breaks and asymmetric mean reversion. From a Threshold AutoRegressive (TAR) test applied to the residuals of the cointegration relationship (while allowing for both a break in the mean of the long-run equation and a smooth regime-transition), there is strong evidence for non-linear mean reversion properties for the real interest rates of the US Treasury Bill market. This suggests asymmetric changes to inflation shocks in the Central Bank's reaction function. The existence of different regimes is consistent with some interpretations of the monetary policies run by the Fed, such as credibility and opportunism.

In the 1990s, transition economies were rearranging their monetary regimes. This paper compares the chosen regimes based on the level of discretionary power and the ability to control inflation. Results show that non-discretionary regimes produce lower and more stable inflation.

                                                            Book Description

The eighteen essays in this volume concentrate on the issues surrounding workers' participation, the area of industrial relations uppermost in Marco Biagi's thinking at the time of his assassination in March 2002. The trend toward ever greater employee involvement in managerial decisionmaking has been growing in Europe for over a decade, to a significant extent as a result of Biagi's work. From the start, he clearly discerned that the key to quality of work was worker participation. This book stands not merely as a homage, but as evidence that Biagi's assassination will not affect the progress he was making. In what amounts to an integrated series of recommendations for further European legislation on workers' participation in industrial relations, the authors analyse and evaluate the following: + experience gained from implementation of the European Works Council Directive and the European Company Statute Directive; + implications of the new Directive on Information/Consultation in National Undertakings and of the European Forum on the Financial Participation of Workers; and + experience in a variety of national contexts, including those of Japan, Italy, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Poland, and Slovenia. In the final analysis, employee involvement -- when it is a genuine commitment on the part of all stakeholders -- is seen as a sharing of cultural values that successfully reconciles efficiency and social justice. Those who believe this is a goal worth achieving, for reasons both economic and social, will recognize in this book an immensely valuable contribution.

                                                            Book Description

One of the most important elements in the computer revolution has been agreement on technological standards. The advances in communication allowed by millions of computers connecting over various networks are based on these networks sharing a common language. This book tells the complete story of the battle between several competing technologies in the late 1970s and early 1980s to become the compatibility standard in one high-tech arena, the LAN (local area network) industry.

In the end, a single technology succeeded in dominating the entire industry: Ethernet. The author argues that Ethernet triumphed not because it was better or cheaper, but because of a clever strategy by Ethernet’s corporate sponsors. This strategy mandated the building of a large supplier base around the technology in order to compensate for an inability to produce all required components and devices. Within a few years, Ethernet had greatly surpassed its competitors in gaining suppliers, which included specialized start-ups, semiconductor firms, and established computer manufacturers. This supplier advantage proved an invaluable strategic asset. As suppliers developed various price and product advantages that were easily adopted by Ethernet, its competitors were driven out of the market.

Key to understanding the importance of a supplier base in the race for standards is the crucial role of a technological community. The book demonstrates how technological communities account not only for critical differences in the standardization strategies of various LAN vendors, but also for the emergence of other important instances of technological competition. For example, the recent rise of Linux and Java can be seen as the result of successful community-driven strategies.

The story of the battle for the LAN standard is also a story of the Internet more broadly, and so the book offers unique insights into its dazzling growth, as LANs became important corporate on-ramps to the Internet and several LAN suppliers (such as 3Com) evolved into leading suppliers of Internet technology.

I read this book after I had read `Where Wizards Stay up Late', and I think this helped. Von Burg' book tells the tale of how the Ethernet protocol for connecting computers in an office building (a `local area' as opposed to a `wide area' e.g. across town) became the de-facto accepted standard over the decade of the 1980's. His case is that widespread adoption of the standard created a `community' of users and developers who were able to rapidly overcome any deficiencies in the standard, and that the wider this community the faster the developments, therefore the more rapid the advances over competing standards (in this case Token-Ring, backed mainly by IBM). The book builds the story quite well, and pulls no punches about the deficiencies of Ethernet - very cumbersome cabling, initially quite narrow bandwidth. He comes up with the best explanation of the Hub versus Bus configurations of connections which I have come across ( remote maintainability - but read the book).

As well as a fascinating layout of the story of Ethernet and its many iterations and close shaves on the way to becoming the de-facto LAN (local area network) standard Von Burg puts together a wider theoretical basis to describe the diffusion of innovations. In this process he links the triumph of Ethernet (mainly its widespread developer `community') with the open source movement (e.g. Linux developers), and ends up stating that the movement which attracts the widest `community' must ultimately win. There are holes in this argument (e.g. how does a voluntary community produce a working, commercially-usable, supportable product on time, every time), but it is the first time I have seen this argument so persuasively articulated. On this technology-communitarian theory, the individual firm, no matter how bigger, can no longer compete with a diverse community of developers. Its very current when you see Linux and Microsoft slug it out for space in corporate computer rooms.

I have just leafed through the book---cannot say that I have really read it yet. However, I know some of this history and some of the people. This account appears to combine careful datagathering with solid analysis and clear exposition. A little nit, the controversy regarding the Soderblom's token ring patent is restricted to a footnote.

I read this book carefully. I think the great strength of this book is that the author carefully compares the predictions of economic theory with the actual outcomes. When the two diverge, he uses the divergence to illuminate shortcomings of the economic model. Some economic studies of standardization issues failed because the authors did not understand either the technology or the market well enough to properly compare actual events with model predictions. I also found the history enjoyable-but then I am a computer nerd not an economist.
