    It's a little bit pricey, but you get excellent overview of the field in Essa's book.

    She strives for economy over quantity, so you get reviews of Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, Malsow, and the other names that influence early childhood in a concise but informative format.

    It's a great companion after J.A. Brewer's, Feeny/Moracik's, and G.S. Morrison's introductory early childhood texts.

The material is organized into classes of related case studies that develop a single key idea of statistics. The authors begin by discussing an application that motivates the key idea. Students are then shown how to analyze a data set. The emphasis of the analysis is to answer important business questions with statistics rather than talk about statistics. Basic Business Statistics introduces ideas often not emphasized in elementary texts such as issues of robustness, the use of transformations to simplify problems, sampling bias, confounding, kernel density, quality control, and scatterplot matrices. Business Analysis with Regression includes a discussion of scatterplot smoothing, prediction intervals for new observations, collinearity, logistic regression, nonlinear models, and multiple comparisons in regression. The text includes directions for data analyses with JMP and an appendix with Minitab commands. Professors Dean P. Foster, Robert A. Stine, and Richard P. Waterman are members of the Department of Statistics at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

      This book has an interesting premise of focusing statistics for business at the mid-level using the JMP software. The concepts addressed are the right ones, even the order is good.

      However, on the downside, it is very difficult to read. The cases are not well explained. This book is used at Wharton's 1st year core course in statistics and the general agreement is that it is very hard to comprehend it. I recommend an editor to the authors.

          The Establishment of English colonies in North America and the West Indies in the seventeenth century opened new opportunities for trade. Conspicuous among the families who used these opportunities to gain mercantile and social importance was the Perry family of Devon, who created Perry and Lane, by the end of the century the most important London firm trading to the Chesapeake and other parts of North America.

          Jacob Price traces the family from Devon to Spain, Ireland, Scotland, the Chesapeake, New England, and London. He describes their relationships with Chesapeake society, from the Byrds and Carters to humble planters. In London, the firm's patronage gave the family high standing among fellow businessmen, a position the founder's grandson utilized to become a member of Parliament and Lord Mayor of London. In the end, the grandson's political success as an antiministerialist brought the family the enmity of the prime minister, Sir Robert Walpole, and contributed to the downfall of their firm.

          The Perrys' story reveals the interrelatedness of social, commercial, and political history. It offers an important contribution to our understanding of the nature of the Chesapeake trade and the forces shaping the success and failure of English mercantile enterprise in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

                Aino Halinen's doctoral disseration from the Turku School of Economics, Finland, has now also been published by Routledge. The study is a pioneering piece of work on the development of buyer-seller relationships in professional services, mainly building on the theoretical work by the IMP group interaction/network studies. The study also interestingly reflects the recent "relational turn" in marketing research in general. The longitudinal case study described and analysed in the book also gives the reader a good example of how an interpretative research method can provide thorough theoretical insights and meaningful managerial implications. The book can be characterized as "obligatory" readings for any M.Sc. or doctoral student in marketing interested in interorganizational relationships and networks.

                  I found this book particularly well done and interesting in two aspects. First, I was impressed that this was truly a book for the African American and for the "Black Enterprise" population internationally. So much research is incorporated, without making it hard to read. I felt I had a much better understanding of the needs as well as the contributions of that population after reading the book.

                  Secondly, this was a great practical book on technology and how to use it to further a business. I am not a tech person, but I had no trouble understanding any of it, and I learned a lot I didn't know about how to use technology in ways that will enhance the profit potential of my business. I particularly liked the chapter on Improving Your Company's Internet ROI which covers planning for your site step-by-step.

                  There are also over 20 pages of web sites of interest to African American entrepreneurs, and the numerous appendices including a tremendous glossary are worth the price of the book alone.

                                      Good presentation, interesting ideas, but some of these `things' are downright ridiculous - probably put there to complete the count for the title. For example, 'forgetting your glasses' and `too tight shoes' are aptly put under a special section for `Other Stupid Stuff' and the book would probably have been better off without that section altogether.

                                      Having said that, however, some of the problems and the solutions are quite valid and useful especially for the beginning trainer. The book would have a lot better if the problems were chosen based on quality rather than quantity and the solutions explored in greater depth.

                                      The Book deals with 7 categories of problems:

                                      2) How you Look and Act.
                                      3) Things you Say or Hear.

                                      I was a little disappointed with this book. While it contains a few helpful reminders of what you should and shouldn't do, anyone who is a professional trainer (or a business professional with public speaking experience in general) won't find much new here.
                                      I can't say there isn't anything of value, becuase it does contain some good pointers on improving your visual aids, how not to overdo class interaction, etc.
                                      A good "reminder" checklist for folks just getting into public speaking & training.

                                          Our Own Time provides the first full account of the movement to shorten the working day in the United States. Combining the narrative and trade union emphasis of traditional labor history with the focus on culture and the labor process characteristic of contemporary labor history, the book offers an illuminating reinterpretation of the history of the U.S. labor movement from the colonial period onward. The authors argue that the length of the working day or week historically has been the central issue raised by the American labor movement during its most vigorous periods of organization. Beginning with a picture of working hours in colonial America and the early republic, Roediger and Foner then analyze the ideology of the movement for a ten-hour workday in the early nineteenth century. They demonstrate that the ten-hour issue was a key to the dynamism of the Jacksonian labor movement as well as to the unity of male artisans and female factory workers in the 1840s. The authors proceed to examine the subsequent demands for an eight-hour day, which helped to produce the mass labor struggles of the late nineteenth century and established the American Federation of Labor as the dominant force in American trade unionism. Chapters on labor movement defeats following World War I, on the depression years, and on the lack of progress over the last half-century complete the study. Our Own Time will be an ideal supplemental text for courses in U.S. labor and economic history.
