Greg Knows Whitetails!.......2006-07-31

Greg Miller is one of the foremost experts on the habits of Whitetail deer and the techniques used to hunt them. So much that is written now on the subject can be classified as just warmed over rewrites of previously covered subjects, but Greg Miller's approach is noteworthy because it covers the five "W's" of research - "What, Where, When, Why, and hoW!" He promises no shortcuts but does promise results if the hunter applies himself. Great read and great information. I recommend this book as well as others Greg Miller has written on the subject of hunting for Whitetail deer to anyone aspiring go after this great game animal.

Low Expectations.......2006-06-06

I have read all of Greg Miller's earlier works and enjoyed them. When I saw that he put out "Greatest Whitetail Adventures" I figured I would not read another. I mean, this guy is all over the hunting shows, on the sports show circuit, magazines, etc. He could just put out a series of compilations based on his previous books and milk the cash cow that is the modern deer hunting industry.

After picking up this book I have to admit: I was absolutely wrong. This is the most honest book he has ever done. This is not the "glass the crop fields and find the hardwood funnel" tactics of 90% of the deer hunting books out there. It reminds me of the John Eberhardt bowhunting books in that it really shows you what it takes to be a consistent hunter in these environs. The work, preparation, and especially mental attitude. Greg is not preaching: he readily explains his own feelings from his earliest attempts at bowhunting.

I figured Greg Miller succumed to what is the modern deer hunting industry machine. Instead I get the sense that Greg is using his position within the industry to ensure a future of respect for the quarry being hunted.

Correct Information.......2001-12-07

Ok, here is the correct order of the books, atleast to book 6. There is allot of confusion concerning this, so I hope this helps. Book 1 is Prelude, followed by Overture, Sonata, Intermezzo, Serenade, and Duet. The first two that I have read have been wonderful, but the main purpose of this post was to help those confused by the titles.

X: Greatest CLAMP Manga of all time.......2000-09-25

X, known as X/1999, is my personal favorite. I've read _all_ ofthem, 1-15 (8-15 have yet to come out in English), and I must say,CLAMP has spoiled me. Their art is exceptional, story lines arecomplex and meaningful, and their characters made to love or hate.
This book is my favorite in english, because it introduces SeishirouSakurazuka, the SAKURAZUKAMORI, a heartless, cold, charming andhandsome assasin who has a secret past and bloodstained hands. ((He'smy favorite X character, along with Fuuma Monou))
I'd recommendthis book to anybody over 14, as there are lots of shonen-aireferences (guy on guy schtuff) and lots and lots of gore. Be preparedto love it or hate it. CLAMP really has a winner here.

I love all the books so far in the X/1999 series! The artwork is great, the story is great, and I can't wait for the next one! If you like X/1999, check out Card Captor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Clover! (also by CLAMP)

Very Dark.......2000-06-22

X, or as it is called in America, "X/1999", is one of the darkest manga I've seen. This is especially interesting because it is done by the CLAMP team, who have also made such cutesy titles as Card Captor Sakura. Needless to say, fans of that series may want to research X a bit before reading.

"Duet" continues the macabre apocalyptic story of X, and hightens the feeling of a fast approaching storm. Those who are familiar with Tokyo Babylon will recognize the mention of the Sakurazuka; yet another aspect of the story, which, along with the disturbing imagery of Kamui's visions and the introduction of bizarre genetically manufactured entities by the "bad guys" accelerates the creepiness of the story.

If you like conspiracy theories, darkness, and an approaching apocalypse, this is definately the book for you.

The Plot thickens.......2000-06-22

"Duet" is the 6th book in the manga (Japanese comic) X/1999 (or simply X, as it is in Japan.) The book is written and illustrated by CLAMP, a group of 4 women who have created some of the most popular manga-Magic Knight Rayearth, RG Veda, Clover, and Tokyo Babylon.

"Duet" is a must have for anyone following the series. My only warning is that some may find Kotori's dream sequence a bit too long, it's about a chapter long, and quite gory.

The book starts out with main character and protagonist Kamui revealing some memories to the reader, and then trying to protect Kotori from Seichiro, a dragon of earth. One also learns abou the past of Nataku, another dragon of earth, and there is a flashback as Fuma is talking to Kamui, about a promice that explains Fuma's loyalty. Meanwhile, Sora and Arashi meet with Grandmother Sumeragi.

Overall, this book spends most time explaining things, such as pasts, what's going on-important, but not necessarily the most exciting. You might no feel as compelled to go back to it once you're done, but if you're into the series, definately get it.

The clarity of the studies and writing used to explain Asia's consumer markets pre and post-meltdown, makes this book a really easy,and enjoyable read. I would recommend it to anybody who, like me, is trying to sell into the vast Asian market and needs some guidelines on the current consumer trends. I am most impressed with the authors' style as well as the thoroughly accessible lay-out and chapters headings that enable the reader to dip in and out at random. I have used this book as a resource for a number of trips and presentations that I have given in the past few months. Better than most.

This is one of the best books around on the subject........1999-02-18

I'm a frequent traveller to Hong Kong and the surrounding area, and the authors have really hit on something. South -east Asia is still in recession, but it's not a recession as we know it. It's merely slowed-down to a less frenetic pace.

My last visit to the area was in late December when I visited Hong Kong and Macau. I found this book really reflected what was going on after the 'meltdown', and is packed full of really invaluable info.

Rarely have I seen such quality!.......2004-11-18

I consider myself fairly picky about the quality of the images I use in my work. These clipart pictures are truly exceptional! Every single image, even the small helmet shots, are of an exceptionally high level of detail. You sometimes feel like the item is right in front of you. At this price, you would not expect the subtle shadings and hatching to be present in the art or print of the book, but they are there, giving the art a sense of depth that I have not found in other publications (even those in full color). This book provides well over 750 high quality clipart images. There are a very few images that are of a far lower detail, and hence, quality level. But that can be excused by the overwhelming achievement of the artist who produced the overall work of this book. For those looking to verbally depict armor or weapons, the value of this book cannot be over stated - it will inspire page after page with its high level of detail and the obvious inspiration of the smiths of history.

Excellent source for Medieval clip art!.......2000-08-06

I publish newsletters for a non-profit organization that re-creates the Middle Ages to educate people about history - the Society for Creative Anachronism. "Arms & Armor" has been an invaluable resource to handsomely illustrate the pages of my newsletters. Dover's copyright on this book allows the use of 10 images per project - which is very generous, considering some other clip art books only allow 4 or 5 per project. Furthermore, the country and century from which the images were cultivated is listed at the bottom of every page. This is immensely helpful for using these images in education. When one of our members writes an article about 16th century German horse armor, I can find an exact image to match his/her description in the article. There is a wide variety of images to choose from, including sketches of helmets, swords, axes, full suits of armor, shields, battle scenes and armor accoutremonts. I have owned this book for three years, and I use it with almost every newsletter issue I publish. I consider it an essential resource for SCA newsletter illustration.

A savage indictment.......2002-05-13

This book was a savage indictment of the white settlement of Australia. The details of the massacres are so unrelenting as to render the reader numb with disbelief that such behaviour could be perpetrated by so-callled civilised man.

My only criticism of this treatise is that Mr Elder fails to accept that the very same reasons that made the Aboriginal people innocent also applied to the perpetrators of the massacres. A white person taught that to steal a loaf of bread could lead to 7 years transportation was unlikely to react well to an aboriginal group taking and slaughtering cattle for food. It was often a case of the brutalised doing the brutalising.

Mr Elder also brushes off the (admittedly extremely rare) massacres of whites by aboriginals as being basically "brought upon themselves" even in cases where he has no particular evidence (ie when the settlers had just arrived and were building their camp). Horrible reprisals on the parts of other whites does not reduce the horror of the original act.

Don't get me wrong. These really are minor complaints. Overall, this is a well written book and the inclusion of previously unrecorded massacres from aboriginal oral histories is an important addition to what would otherwise be a list of the stories that white Australia recorded, which were of course written mostly by the people who perpetrated and therefore were apologists for the original acts.

Essential reading for any Australian.......1999-10-15

When I was in high school I was shocked and inspired by "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee". It took another 20 years to find the Australian equivalent.

I bought this during a recent trip home. The presentation is sparse, and much of the evidence is anecdotal, but the mass of evidence is overwhelming. Australians slaughtered the Aboriginals in defiance of ill conceived laws. Although the current generation didn't perpetrate the crimes, race relations in Australia continue to be haunted by the shadows of these events. Elder's introduction rams home that time doesn't negate these events.

Please read this.
