At one point, Eclipse! takes time off from its primary task--a detailed technical guide to observing and recording eclipses around the globe--to tell the admonitory tale of the pupils of a school in Baltimore, Maryland. These eager and inquisitive children were not only kept in by their teachers during the event (owing to "legal considerations"), they were not even allowed near the windows! Of course, on the list of Things That Are Bound to Ruin Your Eclipse, other people's idiocy comes quite low. The top contenders are usually clouds and bad traffic. Lazy journalists who tell those of us disappointed on the day of an eclipse that this was "our only chance to see an eclipse" only fray our tempers further. This is, of course, nonsense. Eclipses happen all over the world at reasonably frequent intervals, and over the next few years they will be visible from many exciting locations. (Harare, 2001, anyone?) Philip Harrington's handsomely illustrated technical manual (none of your poorly reproduced NASA Web-site maps here) is both a resource for experienced eclipse chasers and an excellent introduction for those bitten by the eclipse bug. A fine book about solar and lunar eclipses.......2006-07-09

Yes, this book is a little bit dated, given that it gives plenty of advice about how to observe the solar eclipses from 1998 to 2017, and we're nearly halfway through that time period already.

The book tells us about the main things one sees during an eclipse. Until the Sun is nearly covered by the Moon, there are few changes. But once the Sun is almost covered, things do change a little, in a spooky manner. There is still plenty of light; it isn't at all dark yet. It may be a little cooler, of course. But everything looks a little strange, because the Sun has been reduced to almost a point source. Harrington does not emphasize this, but shadows get much, much sharper. It's weird.

Meanwhile, Harrington does spend some time telling about the shadow bands (on the landscape) that one may observe shortly before totality. These are not easy to see, and they are nearly impossible to photograph.

And then, you may get to see the Moon's shadow rushing toward you at 1000 miles per hour. Once it reaches you, that's the start of totality. As you get close to totality, the only sunlight is that which sneaks through some of the Moon's valleys: it is called "Bailey's beads." The final few seconds before totality, there is only one bead left, and that is called "the Diamond Ring."

By now, the horizon looks like a 360-degree sunset. And at last, yes, there is totality (and darkness...it is like being outdoors in the middle of the night when the Moon is full), with the Sun and Moon combining to look like a hole in the sky. You get to see the Corona, and if you are lucky, maybe some solar prominences. And it is strange: most humans know from experience that it is Wrong for the Sun to be blocked in the middle of the day. Meanwhile, you get a rather unusual view of the sky. Many observers will try to get a rare naked-eye view of Mercury. Or there may even be a comet near the Sun that one can see.

Harrington discusses eclipse photography. My advice is to leave that for the experts: if you try to do photographs, you may pretty much miss the eclipse. In addition, you may find it difficult to operate your camera in the dark! Maybe the best idea is to bring a movie camera to record the reactions of those who are with you.

As this book explains, it requires some planning to get to see a solar eclipse at all. Eclipses rarely come to you; you almost always need to travel to get to see them. Harrington does discuss the main problem: it may be cloudy, and if clouds obscure the Sun, you will miss the eclipse! That means you need both good planning and some luck.

Eclipses are unique experiences. I recommend this book about them.

I've been lucky to watch 3 total solar eclipses in my life, and still want more! This book was written by an eclipse-addict to help other eclipse-addicts, like me. I feel very grateful to Mr. Harrington for sharing all his experience and regarded knowledge to make the eclipse experience more fun. I'm now planning to watch the 2001 eclipse in Africa based on this book's advises.

The book includes charts, tables, photographic tips, and much more useful information. The only drawback I see is that it has no color pictures.

I have been planning my trip to view the August 1999 total solar eclipse for a few years now. It's almost here!! Thanks to this book, the best about eclipses by far, I am ready! Chapters detail traveling to other countries, what to bring, how to photograph eclipses, and even information about *every* eclipse between now and 2017. It even gives details about expected climatological conditions!

This book is more than solar eclipses, however. It also gives me new appreciation for lunar eclipses as well. There is a beauty coming up in January 2000 that will be visible right from my backyard. I'm now ready for that one, too!!

I picked this book up in the library but it's one I will own. In one chapter all my questions about how eclipses work were answered and much more. Harrington has helped me discover the wonder and uniqueness of each upcoming eclipse, even if I won't always be on the right continent to observe them myself. An excellent guide book for everyone from the simply curious to the avid eclipse chaser.

The book brings together for the first time a wealth of information on such topics as knighthood, military organization, weaponry and fortifications, and warfare in the East. In 1095 with the launching of the First Crusade, Europeans established a great military endeavour to save the Holy Land, an undertaking that remained a central preoccupation until the end of the thirteenth century. While the expeditions that went forth to fight the Muslims involved armies of exceptional size, much of the warfare within western Europe itself was conducted by small armies on behalf of landowners who were often neighbours and kin. In his approach to his subject, John France considers political, social, and economic development in the age of the crusades. He emphasizes the significance of four factors in shaping medieval warfare: the dominance of land as a form of wealth, the limited competence of government, the state of technology that favoured defence over attack, and the geography and climate of western Europe. His coverage of the castle and the knight in armour depicts the role of landowners in producing these characteristic medieval instruments of war. Invaluable Insight Into Early Medieval Warfare.......2000-07-17

John France, as a military historian, may not have the recognition or popularity of an author such as John Keegan, but for the period of which he writes his work is no less valuable and perhaps more historically exact. This is a historical text, and those readers who have been attracted to the period by more popularizing authors such as Runciman may find this work, if more accurate, containing greater detail than sought. Nonetheless, this book is written with clarity and concision, and in this respect is an improvement over France's earlier and equally significant work "Victory in the East."

Revealing the largely proprietorial interests that motivated the warfare of this period, as well as the limited scope and ad hoc nature of its engagement, France does much to dismiss the formerly held image of early medieval warfare being epitomized by the massed charge of armored knights with lances couched. Not that such tactics did not occur, but more that warfare of the period was much more determined by circumstances that often precluded this practice's effectiveness, as well as the fact that much of the warfare of this period was predicated upon raiding and skirmishing in which military experience was based upon small conflicts and individual combat, where full-scale battle was more often than not eschewed in favor of limited engagements. And the social elements that influenced the makeup of a levy contributed to a decentralization of both leadership and constituency that often insured that when engaged, battle was hardly the set piece a tactician might envision. With the exception of household knights, most armies were composed of troops with varying degrees of training and experience, the former's loyalty tied to their individual lords, and the latter's reliability far from certain. With leadership based upon individual and often independent nobles of varying talent and experience whose value and ability to lead were often predicated upon notions of personal valor, the armies of this period were difficult to control and form, and their expected performance on the battlefield at best uncertain. Battle, when engaged, came about as often as not through accident, and could easily devolve into isolated islands of combat. Tight formation and precision of maneuvers were to wait until the more professional and standing armies of the 14th century, and it was not until this period that the massed charge of cavalry was to become standard. While at times this tactic was used effectively and with success---most notably in the East---during this period in Europe its use was often incidental and the results unpredictable. The use of siege and raiding were more often the norm.

This is an excellent book that offers far more than the comments above indicate. It examines not only the social, economic, political, and religious elements that contributed and informed the warfare of the period, but the armaments and changes in military practice---slight in comparison to other periods they may be---that defined warfare in the early Middle Ages. This book should be a must for any serious reader of the period.

Not helpful at all.......2006-04-10

I bought this book looking for helpful information to fill in the gaps where my MBA didn't go into detail. However, I found it to be simply a giant ad for Microsoft products. I suppose if you planned on using nothing but Microsoft Office to run your eBusiness it might help, but I'm not sure how well that would work. Mostly the book just refers you to the Help sections and the Microsoft website for further information, so save the money and just go directly to those resources. If you are looking for good, solid information or resources for beginning a new eBusiness or expanding a current one, this is not the book for you.

Practical advice for long term success.......2001-04-25

Finally, a book that offers real-world information aimed at running a business rather than just building a website. Every chapter is shot-through with practical techniques for managing a sustainable, profitable venture. The author obviously has extensive experience. She gives great examples and tips and she doesn't sugar-coat the realities. She mentions Micorosft technologies, but really, this book is longer on real business information than anything else. Go for it. This book is a real gem.
