Lots of Fun!.......2002-02-13

Even as an adult, I saw this book and had to play with it. It is made of very thick, sturdy, laminated, cardboard and has only six pages. The book asks you to sing and record various parts of "Old MacDonalds Farm" while you are visited by a chicken, pig and bear. John Lund mixes photographs of what seems to be stuffed animals with his own illustrations. I thought the illustrations were very busy, but probably gives the child plenty of visual material, considering the short length of the book.

Paying it forward........2007-06-30

I read this book several years ago, and I think I received it as an incentive for continuing my subscription with Runner's World magazine. Although I've tried, I'm not sure the information in this book has helped my amateur performances. While the information in Mental Training is helpful, I think it lends itself more to the demands of professional athletic success. And though I continue to experiment with viusalization techniques (in all aspects of life), my practical expectations are now a bit more realistic.

I have read this book and others with the similar perspective. It's a quite applied volumen, but I prefer other with a theoretical+practical perspective... I have used it with my students, but I have needed other books...

A well researched and written book with some very sound advice. It covers relaxation, imaging and visualisation with practical examples of how to go about the processes. It also explains the relevance and the benefits an athlete can derive from using these techniques.

Talk your way through Melanesia!.......2006-06-08

This book covers the three Pidgin languages of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu - three of the most diverse, fascinating and unspoilt countries in the South Pacific. While English is spoken by many people in all the three, the Pidgins described here are the lingua franca in each, and I found that locals were very happy to hear me speak them. Each of the three languages is introduced by a good description of its grammar (don't worry, easy and similar in all three) and pronunciation, followed by useful phrases arranged thematically.

And here comes my only complaint - I would have preferred more phrases, and perhaps short dictionary listings for all the three languages. Space for that could have been found by omitting what seems a waste here to me - descriptions of two obscure pidgin languages of Australia, which are also included in LP's Australian Phrasebook (where they logicaly belong) anyway.

Still, within the confines of its limited space, this little book is excellent.
If you are lucky enough to travel to these charming archipelagos, don't leave home without it!

Great solutions manual.......2000-06-20

Written by the author, versus some 'hired hand' to do the problem-solving, this is a very useful guide. Solutions are not given for all the problems, but if you look at the methodology and approach taken to the ones that are included, it will be easier and you will learn more. Most of the in-text problems are challenging; when the numbers don't work out, this is a good source to turn.

a wry's cat's take on we poor humans' little worries........1999-05-15

ringer mcgee is a welcome voice of sanity in a world sated with talk show blah blah and infomercials telling us how everything works. his insights into our little insecurities that we blow way the heck outta proportion, our high culture, and our low, are a hysterical reality check as we stare into the face of the big two oh oh oh. this book is for the thinking cat lover, as well as the other unenlightened can-openers of the world. and the illustrations of ringer, as well as those of his friends, are just what i pictured in my mind, only a whole lot funnier. his is a face that cannot be lied to, and cannot be snowed or swayed (even with table snacks). and you know he's going to give you his full two cents' worth. my question is: can ringer run for office?

A Great Perspective from the German Point of View.......2006-12-25

I have always enjoyed oral histories of warfare and this one told from the German point of view did not disappoint. The book is a perspective of the war based upon interviews with young boy-soldiers, housewifes, the typical adult soldier as well as political prisoners held by the German state.

The most interesting chapters dealt with the submarine warfare and the stories told by the soldiers who fought at the Russian front. I was surprised to learn that not all Germans treated Russians like animals, and vice versa.

However, the book has a major flaw that, I think, takes away from the overall flow of the book. There are way too many people interviewed for the book. Consequently, some of their stories come across as rather disjointed and much too precise to offer any good reading. I would have preferred longer stories which would have lead to a more cohesive story. Some people tell their story in one part of the book and then part of their story is related in another chapter. The problem with this is that when the person is first introduced, there is a very short biography of the person. When that particular person's text is related later, the biography is omitted which forces the reader back to the original location of the person relating the story in order to re-read their bio. Hence, the three star rating.

All in all, the book is definitely worth reading for the WWII buff.

In an effort to show the intricacies of such a perplexing part of world history, the editors present an incredibly diverse group of voices: Jews who supported Nazis, Germans who hated Nazis, and people who simply joined the Nazis to be part of a social circle. With chapters as varied as Jews Get Out, The Children's Crusade, and German Women in Total War, readers learn from those in the Reich of why they participated in such a tyrannical regime. Often, the answers are too human to believe.

Voices of the Third Reich presents a horrific history by those who lived it and almost answers the question of "How could it have happened?"

Understanding the German perspective in WW II.......2000-08-13

The book allows us to witness World War II through the experiences of German soldiers and civilians. These first hand accounts are remarkable and somewhat chilling at the same time. For example, there are accounts that talk about the success of the German military in Europe, and accounts that describe the Russian front in great detail. I found the accounts on about the Russian front to be very disturbing. The soldiers suffered through many ordeals that its amazing they survived at all. Overall, this novel would be a welcome addition to anyone's library.

Critical to understanding the Germans in World War II........1998-10-18

This was perhaps the best of Johannes Steinhoff's books, since it does not deal with his own stellar yet tragic WW II and post war career. The insights of the average person living in Germany are of great importance to both social and military historians alike. Steinhoff offered this collective testament as a warning to all of us regarding war and the rise of a dictator. As Johannes said in an interview, "It is always the civilians who suffer the most, yet are remembered the least."

Great book especially for World War II buffs.......1998-08-26

This book is an excellent work that shows the German side of World War II. Through many accounts, the tome reveals slices of German life from the rise of Hitler to the toppling of the Reich. It shows that the German people, even during the monstrous horrors of the Holocaust, were still just people trying to survive. It is a fine work and is worthy to be included in any library.
