A superbly practical and comprehensive guide - cogent and succinct but thorough. Having just gone through an office disaster similar to worked examples and real life situations presented in the book, incurring tens of thousands of dollars of damages and subsequent insurance claims, I can highly recommend this book as a must read for prevention purposes and a user-friendly guide for when it happens to you. I never thought I would need it, and was so grateful to have a copy on hand to reassure my decision-making in working through all the clean-up afterwards. It is an excellent resource not only for small businesses, but also for any office situation - non-profits, community groups, churches, synagogues etc.

A delight for projectile-flinger fanatics.......2005-10-28

If, like me, you are an unapologetic fan of human-powered projectile launchers: airguns, blowguns, slingshots, bows - you will enjoy the heck out of Richard Middleton's The Practical Guide to Man-Powered Bullets.

At almost every page, I found myself going "Aha!" because Middleton writes in such an entertaining and educational way, presenting both theory and practice, unexpected bits of information, experiments you can do yourself, and a lot else besides.

The are 12 chapters in all, including two on crossbows, one on catapults (slingshots), one of blowpipes (blowguns), four on airguns (high pressure and low pressure, both practical and theoretical), and others on compound bows, velocity measurement, and ammunition.

I found this book a delight to read, and a treat for the "big kid" in me. Highly recommended.

This book is a college text, for sure, but it is easily read and understood without enrolling for the course. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting both an introduction and a useable reference to the subject of Quality. A better investment than spending almost as much for a trendy "fluff" book, of which there are many. Also, many of the other books on the subject tend to focus mostly in manufacturing settings. This book deals equally with the service sector as well. Particularly good case studies at the end of the book, treated in depth.

Balance of methods, cases, and even a little history thrown in. Keeps it from being too boring.

Too much chess analogy.......2006-03-05

I love the book, Winning Behavior, but this one is disappointing. The authors spent 6 chapters or 170 pages on chess analogy: on Opening Game, Early Middle Game, Mid Middle Game, Late Middle Game, End Game. Trust me, I am a chess player and love it. It still wears on me after a couple chapers. The same contents started to repeat. This book might be beneficial for a sales people, but this is a tough read.

Another Winner.......2004-04-23

Every page of this book is competitive gold. The book beautifully elaborates on the thinking processes that B2B companies use to gain competitive advantage in an ever-tightening market. It will help company leaders counter unproductive behavior, and function in highly competitive industries.
Generally, I tend to rate business books on how well they help me understand the business and industry I work in, and using those guidelines , I found this book to be extremely valuable. There are many original, great ideas presented in this book which stand alone on their own merit . However, Pugh and Bacon also build upon their previous book, Winning Behavior, which showed the paradox that well managed companies, like the Men's Warehouse, have built successful business models that listen to customers and employ behavioral differentiation, and yet are not emulated by their competition.
The authors draw on a large body of case histories and business theory to present a fresh and compelling case, reminiscent of Pugh's earlier work in Proposing to Win, which has helped me a great deal. This work differs from most business books by establishing a model, and then making innovative predictions based on that model. For that reason alone, it is more valuable than the typical management book, which simply documents what was successful elsewhere, without a real analysis as to the reasons and limitations of this success.
