This is a handy little overview of project management. I've given it to many, many folks since I first discovered it over 15 years ago. It tells you the basics in a coloring-book style that is easy to understand and remember. It won't get you through your Project Management Professional exam, but if what you need is the equivalent of Cliff Notes for project management, this is the book you need.

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this book but I was pleasantly surprised! It offers so much great advice for dealing with a variety of life's situations. The advice is simple & easy to read. There are so many topics covered, I liked the section on personal finance the most. Although the parts dealing with family situations are very useful, direct and to the point, like tracing a family tree, dealing with problem neighbors, etc...I recommend this book. It a good home reference book.

Brilliant Marxist Historiography!.......2004-01-20

Um, a few observations are in order. Firstly, Marx's critique of history, economics, and society must not be confused with the later activity of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, nor Ho Chi Min: just because they used Marx as their point of departure does in no way diminish Marx's project. Secondly, Hobsbawm is a Marxist historiographer--not a Marxist per se. Thirdly, the period 1848-75 witnessed some remarkably convulsive and important events: 1) the Crimean War [Britian burned on the Black Sea], 2) the Dano-Prussian War [Prussian victory at Düpple], 3) the Austro-Prussian War [Prussian victory at Sadowa], 4) German unification under Bismarck, and 5) the Franco-Prussian War which resulted in the spectacular German victory at Sedan, the collapse of the Second Empire, the Paris Commune, and the establishment of the Third Republic. Need we say more? Get the book.

The Golden Age of Capitalism.......2000-08-02

After the collapse of the Revolutions of 1848, Europe as a whole was pretty quiet until 1914. Economically, however, the period is divided by a serere economic downturn areound 1875. This book covers the first part of this period, when European and American Capitalism grew strong.

Since Hobsbawm is a Marxist, he's not much of a fan of this period, but his coverage of it is quite evenhanded and honest. Again, as in the first book, he's challenging to read, but worth the effort.

name a single European event that happened between 1848 and 1875...quick! My guess is that a lot of non-Europeans would have a hard time with that one. Yet it was an astonishingly influential period, the time when both capitalism and imperialism became truly, irreversibly entrentched. Hobsbawm tells the tale masterfully. Reading the book, it's hard to believe he didn't actually live through this time himself. The book is a superb marriage of narrative with historical detail. Read it. Read all three.

The eminent British Marxist historian E.J. Hobsbawn has written, over an extended period, several books highlighting the key trends in the modern history since the English Revolution, particularly modern revolutionary history. The book under review is to this reviewer a very useful addition and extention of his classic Age of Revolution which takes the narrative up to 1848. The period from the French Revolution to the Revolutions of 1848 is the decisive period of the age of democratic revolution, the necessary precursor to all later socialist and communist movements. This is the period when, not without setbacks and dashed hopes for the laboring masses, those masses began their first definitive appearance on the world historic stage, even if at that time only in the wake of the victorious bourgeoisie. The present volume is above all the story of that bourgeoisie's triumph and, as a result of the fear of the masses, the definitive movement away by that class from the the underlying premises of the French Revolution. The reaction to the Paris Commune of 1871 and the bloodbath in its aftermath is a signature event of that fright. In a very profound sense that movement has not stopped to this day.

Professor Hobsbawn's central theme is the intertwining of the defeat of the of political revolution unleashed by the great revolution in France in 1789 in 1848 and the rapid escalation of capitalist development, primarily in England at that time but quickly followed by other nations, of the Industrial Revolution. It is not unfair to state that that process is what changed people, at least in the European/ North American land masses, into individuals from a previously largely undifferentiated mass. Moreover, the rise and definitive victory of industrialization held out the promise, if only the promise, of taking the struggle against scarcity-the struggle for daily existence- off the agenda as the motive force of history to be replaced by more communal and cultural pursuits. Ah, but as we know to our misfortune that is still the music of the future.

Professor Hobsbawn is, however, not merely an academic ideologue for these two above-mentioned trends of history as they played out at the time but further does a masterful job of connecting all the conflicting tendencies of the period. If at the end of the day some attenuated form of democracy (or rather liberalism, which is not the same thing) triumphed and capitalism, very ugly warts and all, also was victorious those were not the only tendencies developing in society at that time.

To that end, Hobsbawn analyzes the land question and the related question of the displacement of populations which created the urban proletariat and gave rise to great cities; the changing of economic cycles from an agrarian basis to the boom and bust of capitalist production; the tensions between the liberalism of the middle classes and the rough democratic spirit of the laboring masses; the critical role of science, particularly the applied sciences but above all the theory of evolution in giving a boost to capitalist industrial organization; the fight against religious obscurantism and the counter-attack by religious reaction; the unusually prominent role of the arts and artists as spokesmen for a critique of capitalist society; the expansion of education and media; and, the beginnings of the attempts by the laboring masses to exercise their own political program culminating in mass socialist parties. If you want a thoughtful, incisive overview of an important period of the history of humankind in one of its less glorious manifestations this is your stop.
