Book Description
This proceedings contains the papers from both the poster and oral presentations presented at the Workshop celebrating the first year of the HETE mission. The HETE mission, launched on 9 October 2000, has dramatically quickened the pace of GRB discoveries. By disseminating accurate burst coordinates to the astronomical community within a minute of the burst onset, HETE has made possible the panchromatic observation of the early, bright phases of the relativistic fireball expansion in several GRB afterglows. The scientific program covered the rapidly expanding range of GRB research, with roughly half of the sessions being devoted to prompt burst emission, and half to burst afterglows, both from observational and theoretical perspectives. In particular, 26 papers presented in the section on the HETE Satellite Mission comprise both a tutorial on the spacecraft and its instruments, as well as a summary of early scientific results. In addition, special sessions, such as the session devoted to soft gamma repeaters, were devoted to future missions and instrumentation.

Book Description
Edwards Park, WWII fighter pilot and one of the founders of Smithsonian magazine recounts his experiences as a young American flier in a backwater of the war--the jungles of New Guinea. Beaver Squadron's P-39s were badly outmatched by the Japanese Zeroes, but they held the line. Park's account, often humorous, often moving, is faithful to the spirit of his old comrades and the planes they loved.
Customer Reviews:
Engaging, thoughtful narrative from an Anti-Hero perspective.......1999-10-21
Back in 1977, Edwards Park published the sparkling "Nanette", a fictionalized account of his days as a neophyte P-39 pilot in New Guinea. "Angels Twenty" could almost be considered the non-fiction companion volume. There is no shortage of action-packed fighter combat oral histories on today's shelves, and readers interested in combat anecdotes of the P-39 and P-47 may be appeased by this book, if not sated. Yet Mr. Parks offers something more, well, soulful -and wrly humorous. The author is a gifted story-teller, and the perspective he offers may be one unfamiliar to the public: The anti-hero fighter pilot. The author's adventurous journey from uncertain tyro to capable veteran is refreshing and memorable (an underlying theme seems to reflect a great truth: In the flying business, there is little that is more satisfying than earning the respect of your peers). I was completely absorbed by the mirthy and genuine "Angels Twenty". I was left feeling as though I'd just finished hearing Mr Parks recount his tale fireside. I was also reminded of the closing words to the introduction to "Nanette": "That was the way we were". Mr. Parks' work is eminently enjoyable, and could perhaps offer insight to my largely untried generation.
Tough recalled memories of a fighter pilot.......1999-03-13
By Parks own admission, the memories are hazey, and are patched together in this vague account of an American fighter pilot operating out of Port Moresby and later inland New Guinea. Stumbling along, he recalls "soirees" over the hills and mountains, the ocassional dogfight encounter and the bad landings on roughly made airstrips. An easy read, though not truly compulsive, but appealing to anyone interested in the subject.

Book Description
Michael Lynch, the central figure of this book, was a long-time gay activist and a dynamic force in organizing an early response to the AIDS epidemic. Lynch's prescient articles in The Body Politic spoke to the gay communities of Toronto, New York, and San Francisco. His organizing efforts meant change and hope.
AIDS Activist is a crisp and passionate introduction to a wide range of issues. Focusing on personal stories Silversides furnishes a snap-shot history of how the AIDS crisis unfolded and some of the heroic responses to it. Her emphasis on the politics of the gay community's response makes this book unique.

Book Description
It began when she was a teenager with an awareness of her body and the reaction other people had to it. It continued with the realization that women’s bodies often gave them a strange power over men. As an adult, it became a fascination with professional sex workers, leading to a plunge into their world. And when Elisabeth Eaves left the world of peep shows and private dancers for the more socially acceptable career of international journalism, she found she could not put that fascination behind her. Her experiences had left her with too many questions and too few answers. So she returned to the world she had left behind. Now, in this candid and insightful book, she recounts her firsthand experience of stripping and gives us a new understanding of women’s sexuality and contemporary sexual mores.
Bare follows the author and her fellow dancers through Seattle strip clubs and bachelor parties, exploring in riveting detail Eaves’s own motivations and behavior, as well as those of her coworkers, as they make their way through the sometimes exhilarating, often disturbing world of stripping. Grounded in an understanding of the intricate dynamics of exchanging sexual services for money, Eaves’s narrative examines the ways in which the work affects the women: how they negotiate the slippery boundaries between their jobs and their “real” lives; how their personal relationships are altered; how they reconcile themselves—or don’t—to the stereotypes that surround their profession; whether the work is exploitative or empowering or both.
In its unstinting honesty,
Bare demands that we take a closer look at the way sexuality is viewed in our culture; what, if anything, constitutes “normal” desire; the ethics of swapping money—or anything else—for sex; and how women and men navigate the perilous contradictions and double standards that make up today’s socio-sexual conventions. The stories Eaves tells—outrageous, funny, sad, and deeply affecting—provide an engrossing and unforgettable look at a group of women who have a lot to reveal, not only about one of America’s largest and most taboo industries, but about the restrictions, joys, and hypocrisies of the world in which we all live.
Customer Reviews:
Hrm........2006-05-06
I have lately begun reading more books that have been cliassified as "women's studies" books. Gender studies books have always intrigued me and this one, not any less than the others.
Bare is a memoir written by
Elisabeth Eaves. Eaves' theory is that strippers can be feminists too and just because they make money from taking their clothes off does not mean that they are hypocrites for calling themselves feminists. She uses her own experiences as a stripper to support this theory.
She discusses working for a peep show in the Northwest and how she was exhilarateed by the power that she seemed to have over the men that came to watch her. Eaves also talks about the women that she works with in an attempt to figure out her own motivations for working at a peep show. However, she never really talks about why most women strip or work at peep shows: money, not power, but money. Eaves worked at an upscale peep show in Seattle, comes from a middle class family and had an education. I was perturbed that she didn't try to delve into the socio-economic asepcts of the decision to strip a little more. On the other hand, her book was very readable. It was like having a discussion with a sister, cousin or friend over lunch. Eaves was a person I could see myself becoming acquaintances with, at the very least.
Three out of five stars - worth the read if you have time for it but not necessary in my mind.
unsatisfying on multiple levels.......2006-03-30
Most of the people looking at this book most likely already have an interest in women's studies, feminism, and the like. If that's you, you're going to be disappointed. You could already guess the author's point and what she's going to say, and she offers it all up without any interesting insights. If you're just interested in stripping, you'll also be disappointed, because there's nothing particularly compelling about her story or the "back stage" scenes she offers. If you're familiar with Eaves's reporting, from Slate magazine and such, you'll already be familiar with her style -- superficial analysis and lack of compelling argument or detail. Skip this book -- there are better feminist analyses of stripping out there, and there are much more interesting stripper "tell-all" autobiographies as well.
Compelling read but not what I expected.......2005-12-22
This book is and is not what the cover says it is: the "naked truth about stripping". On one hand, Eaves does a great job giving readers insight into her world and the ups and downs of the industry. However, I expected a lot more commentary from a feminist viewpoint, which the book did not offer. Instead, I got a lot more of what I didn't really want to read about: her turbulent relationships with boyfriends that did not seem at all relevant to stripping and her career. She does mention that stripping can have an effect on interpersonal relationships and her first example of this (her relationship with her first boyfriend in the book- Eric, I believe?) illustrates it nicely but she does it too many times throughout the course of the book. Otherwise, interesting and well-written!
Really insider- and not what I expected. .......2005-10-28
I think if anyone is looking for hardcore lust at the root of why strippers go into sripping they are going to be let down-- that is the male fantasy around stripping, Eaves concentrates on the female reality of it. She profiles herself and several other strippers giving us a backstage view of the strippers life. She spends some time on the customers but not much (there is one customer that takes a barbie doll in the booth while he plays with himself), this book is more about the strippers. What you learn is something that, deep down, you could've guessed i.e. that strippers are real people with the same aspirations and desires as real people. This fact is probably boring to male customers who want to see the women on stage as 24-hour non-stop sex machines. For me the book provided a refreshing dose of reality.
Truly a great read, but pornography it is not.......2005-10-28
I love the review before mine by ComicCostumes, the one line dis-- I've read his other review of a japan anime video where he commends the "well placed panty shots." I can see how Bare disappointed him. Pornography it is not. Instead it is a woman examining sexuality, power, control and other dynamics in the context of five women that work in a Seattle peep show. It is a study of a culture not many of us get to see. And, as ComicCOstumes learned, little of it has to do with lust for sex. For some it has to do with survival, for others power, for others simply a freedom to feel good about themselves and their bodies. For the men on the receiving end of the lap dance it must come as a real let-down.

Book Description
The brain-like architecture of artificial neural networks makes them ideal for tackling problems that are too difficult for conventional architectures, specifically problems that involve pattern recognition or other perceptual tasks. Neuro-Computers: Optimization Based Learning provides an intermediate-level exposition of the exciting world of neuro-computers. It presents the importance of neuro-computing to artificial intelligence, giving historical background and present-day implementation options. The book demonstrates the superiority of the adaptive search strategy over conventional fixed parameter searches performed by backpropagation algorithms. It then explores global optimization strategy and presents genetic algorithms as viable methods to train neuro computers on non-trivial problems. This self-contained volume is delivered in a format that is suitable for graduate students, as well as researchers who want to begin work in neuro-computing or related artificial intelligence applications.

Topics include: Improved customer service; Better on-time delivery; Reduced inventory and higher productivity; Revenue growth and improved profits.
Customer Reviews:
solid advice for people new to the MRP paradigm.......1999-06-12
This book is a great place to start for anyone that wants to learn the basics of manufacturing resource planning. It is not the definative textbook on the subject, but it offers many good solid examples of how to implement MRP in a manufacturing organization. Worth every penny.
Solid Materials Management Basics.......1998-10-07
Ms. Ptak manages to cover all of the basics of MRP in a single, well written, yet small book. Easily read this is a good primer for anyone who is teachning or training entrants to the field of Materials Management and Inventory Control.
It is not the "be all and end all" of the topic but sufficient to getting people started and understanding this essential tool of Materials Management. If you are a teacher or manager in the field (I'm both as well as a consultant) this is one book to have at the ready for the new employee, student, or client starting the journey.

Customer Reviews:
An unusual, important analysis.......2004-05-03
The collaborative effort of Mark Thornton and Robert Ekelund Jr., Tariffs, Blockades, and Inflation blends contemporary economic analysis and modern market theory with a history of the Civil War era to provide a comprehensive approach to Civil War history. From analysis of why and how the war began as it did to chapters contrasting the different underlying economic concerns of North and South before, during and after conflict, this provides an unusual, important analysis.
The actually not dismal science.......2004-02-17
I bought this book with the intention that it should complement and supplement previously read works on the "Civil War", eg.: Tom DiLorenzo's Lincoln, Jeffrey Hummel's Emancipation and Enslavement, and Charles Adams' When in the Course. It didn't disappoint. Although it is strictly an economic look at the war, it is a Human Action type (self-interest) economics. Stats and graphs add to the text, they don't overwhelm it.
The highlights---Slavery a factor, yes, but as an economic issue, much more than a moral issue. Tariffs a factor, yes, but the uncertainty about future rates, with the election of Republican Lincoln, more than the immediate antebellum rates. The Anaconda Plan worked, yes, but with a great assist from the South with its impressments, embargo, and "luxury" taxes, the Rhett Butler effect. The relationship between the financing of the war (a lot of inflation, yes) and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. When one ponders today's current account deficit, the Civil War's economics do not represent the distant past.
All in all, a book of around 160 pages including introduction, index and bibliography full of interesting interpretations of things which I thought I knew so well, yet didn't.
