Book Description

The field of electronic commerce has grown rapidly over the past few years. Major corporations and even small businesses are using electronic commerce as a channel of distribution. This growth has led to the need for business students to understand the security, risk management, and control issues related to electronic commerce.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Security Issues.......2002-10-22

Greenstein and Feinman's "Electronic Commerce Security, Risk Management and Control" presents a nice overview of the major security issues and ways to address them.

The book in particular focuses on security applications for the accounting industry so accountants in particular should find this text worthwhile. However, the book is still relevant to all fields and industries that are looking to get in on the e-business revolution.

Here are the topics Greenstein and Feinman address:

1. The Role of Third Parties

2. The Regulatory Environment: Cryptography and International Laws, Libel Laws, Domain Name Disputes

3. EDI, E-Commerce and the Internet

4. Risks of Insecure Systems: Data Interception, Social Engineering, Sabotage by Current/Former Employees, DoS attacks, Viruses

5. Risk Management: Managing Security Gaps, Culture Management, Disaster Recovery Plans

6. Internet Security Standards: Standards Organizations, Security Protocols

7. Cryptography and Authentication: Encryption Techniques, Public and Private Keys,

8. Firewalls

9. Payment Mechanisms: SET, SSL, Smart Cards

10. Intelligent Agents

11. Web-Marketing

Overall, Greenstein and Feinman do a fine job of covering the various technologies and issues that deal with security in e-business. This book was used as a text for an e-commerce security course I took during the summer of 2002. Whether you are studying this subject independently or whether you are an instructor looking to use this book for your course, Greenstein and Feinman's "E-Commerce Security, Risk Management and Control" is a decent choice.

Highly Recommended

5 out of 5 stars Financial risk management.......2002-04-04

This book is great if you are reading it to complete financial statements audit. The author is linking electronic commerce with financial risk. Some audit procedures are proposed to manage these risk. In general, the book is from a manager point of view and you always find an accountant/auditor point of view at the end of each chapter.

2 out of 5 stars Useful but boring.......2000-10-05

I'm using this course for a business class in ecommerce. It was the best book I could find at the time (May 2000). I like the coverage and the approach (not too technical) but, oh my gawd, it doesn't read well. Long convoluted sentences. Diagrams that don't always communicate much. On the plus side, if you're an accountant, this is the probably the best ecommerce book around.

                5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2002-08-31

I recently completed my honors project for Dr. Tidwell at University of Toronto, and took two years worth of his organic chemistry courses... I have to say that they were the most enjoyable and understandable courses I have taken in my life, in fact I completed these courses in the top percentile of my class with very little studying on my own- I learned everything in his lectures! He wrote the authoritative book on Ketene chemistry, which all the researchers in that field use, and I used on my honors project. I think that he has a very good skill in presenting concepts in physical organic chemistry that has been honed with hard work over many years, and is also due to an obvious love of chemistry. I can't tell you about this book because I haven't read it yet, but when I can get the money (a little pricey for your average canadian graduate student...), I will hopefully complete my review.

                  TALK ABOUT GOOD!
It's 1952 in South Louisiana. You Know. Carefree. Simple. Nothing ever happens. But something is happening. Somewhere in the vast tracts of swampy real estate, an Air Force transport is missing. Also missing is a container of highly radioactive isotope. And thereby hangs our tale.

“This place does not exit. These people do not exist. The events described herein definitely do not exist. In fact, I do not exist, therefore I could not have read this book, so the gut-wrenching laughter you might have heard from behind my firmly locked doors is a figment of your imagination.”
—Roger E. Stouff, Journalist in a Louisiana town that doesn't exist

“Clark's masterwork is a uniquely hilarious trip inside an era most of us know only from the movies. The nerve-y sky-watching days before AIDS, JFK and The Beatles. I laughed early and I laughed often!”
—Larry Estes, movie producer (Smoke Signals, Book of Stars, etc.)

                  Book Description

Green Beret Sergeant James Acre's story is different than most. He chose to quit college and join the Army. After pushing his way through grueling Special Forces training, he eventually found himself reporting into the 5th Special Forces Group at Nha Trang, South Vietnam.

He was then assigned to one of the most elite behind-the-line strike forces --- the highly secret Special Operations Group, Command and Control South (CCS). This was a small, tightly knit group of men who hoped that they would be fortunate enough to defy death yet one more day.

This is not a diary, but instead a cathartic assemblage of the pieces to the story that has never left Ernie Acre's memory. With honesty that some may find politically incorrect and displeasing, Acre allows you to see inside the Recon Company --- a unit that few ever knew existed --- and walk among some of the finest soldiers ever to wear the Green Beret.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read..........2006-08-14

Most of the SOG-based books have come from veterans who served at CCC in Kontum; some have come from CCN vets, but I believe this is the only book to come from a man who served at CCS. Ernie writes from his memory as if this all happened only days before and I trust his memory because running recon is not something that seems easily forgotten. While it is safe to assume that some of the dialogue may not be 100% accurate, the ideas are certainly there and his recollection of missions is crisp.

I can't figure why "Sham" has openly refused to accept Ernie's work. I respect his opinion, but I disagree on all points. Ernie didn't set out to write about SOG's extensive history, but instead focused on what he experienced because it's what he knows. No two pair of eyes saw the Vietnam War in the same way. If you want SOG history, buy John Plaster's "SOG" - you'll not be disapointed. I feel Acre deserves the right to make himself "party" to the loss of SFC David "Babysan" Davidson because he knew Babysan and ran missions with him - what else would qualify him to do so?

                  5 out of 5 stars A Year in BMT.......2005-06-24

I originally read this engrossing book when it was first published in 1999, and which is written by my friend, Ernie Acre. A member of MACV/SOG's Command & Control South secret project in Ban Me Thuot, Ernie was a member of Recon Company and operated in the Salem House AO of Cambodia during some of the hottest missions of the war. He served in a unit that had the distinction of carrying on its roster some recon legends, such as Jerry "Mad Dog" Shriver and David "Babysan" Davidson, men who would not return home from these highly hazardous missions. This book is as much a memorial to them, written as a cathartic confession from a friend and colleague, as it is a collection of war stories.

The book is written to be read by men familiar with life in a combat zone and contains not a single politically-corrected phrase within its pages . . . which means that it is a tough, gritty book with soul. Ernie pours his emotions into its pages and leaves nothing behind. As an example, in his initiation to the realities of Vietnam rear area diversions, he soon discovers with his fresh-from-Ft. Bragg friends, the matter-of-fact, 500 piaster joys of the local steam and cream joint. No PC police were employed in the editing of this book!

Ernie dives into the initial shocks of his assignment to the Studies and Observations Group with the briefing which carried with it the reality of "if you get captured or killed over the fence, Uncle Sammy knows nothing." He is soon off to his in-country initial training mission during which he quickly learns to appreciate the lessons being taught by his experienced One Zero, a short-timer still in the field with only a couple of weeks left before his return to the World. His eye-opening initial foray over the fence on a trailwatch mission results in some close calls, especially when North Vietnamese Army regulars spot one of the team's Claymores, point to it, shrug their shoulders and decide to do nothing. With sweat running down his forehead and his heart beating so loudly it seems to echo through the jungle, Ernie watches as his One Zero, with the detonating clacker in his hand, seems ready to blow the mine, but manages to hold back from doing so. Good thing, too, since over 250 NVA manage to meander down that trail while the team watches from barely ten meters distance. This book might never have been written.

Ernie manages to imbue the pages of his story with deeply personal conflicts between what he has seen happening in America and what he now sees as a mission more for each other than for a greater good. He sees friends disappear into oblivion and feels the pain of loss of comrades that only combat soldiers will ever know. He is artful in his descriptions of the men he serves with and funny in the escapades that they share . . . oh, yes, the book is not all war stories. In fact, some of the stories that arise during his periods of stand-down are downright hilarious for their outrageousness.

The conflicts within Ernie build with each passing day, each mission, each loss of teammates, to the point where he finally realizes that he can never be the same college student that joined the Army, that dreamed of his `55 Chevy, who eventually sees a person in the mirror that appears to be him, but is no longer him. His reality has changed and has changed him forever. Perhaps this is nowhere more clear than when he reaches that point in his tour when he has to decide to either extend or to return to the World. The feelings of conflict within him are strong as he realizes that the bonds that have been created in combat are unlike those of any other relationship.

The book is a well-written diary of a young man's life-altering experiences, some of which he shares with many who served in Vietnam combat, and some which will forever be personal to Ernie Acre. The reader is fortunate to be allowed to share in these most private of thoughts and emotions of a good soldier who did his duty.

This book is just brilliantly written and the story is amazing.
Those men back then did some job as a part of the most secret unit in the US Army, SOG. When I was reading this book, I easily slipped in my mind in the jungle and I heard the voices and sounds, I can say the txt took me with. Get this book if you can, it sure is a must to read !!!!

Ernie your comrades in arms have reviewed this book well, and understood what you have tried to convey. With the exception of "Sham" who may be the first and only person, I know of that may have served at CCS, who was afraid to leave his name certainly not from the recon group I bet.

Note with pride that some very exceptional recon man, warriors who served in SOG, have given you their opinions on this book, and when it comes down to it, that's the ones that really count.

I recently read it again and my reaction is the same, well done.

I have just finished reading Ernie's book and found it fascinating. I flew "Green Hornet" slick, right gun and inserted and extracted teams in 67-68 from FOB II (CCC) and Ban Me Thuot (CCS). Jerry Shriver led one of the teams I supported, and I had many exciting and terrifying times extracting him and his team. While I was there before Ernie, his descriptions of his experiences run parallel to the experiences of teams I supported. Through the words in his book, I could again feel the experiences I had while supporting men like Ernie. I have always had the utmost respect for the SOG teams and the unbelievable missions they undertook. In this war, these teams were the ultimate definition of the word "Warriors". There is a saying between the men who have been there, which is-"would you go to the woods with this man". I would go to the woods with Ernie!

                      Book Description

Charles Babbage, considered the founding father of the computer, was a key figure during a great era of British history. Best remembered for his pioneering work on analytical and difference engines, the forerunners of the modern computer, Babbage was also an active campaigner for reform in both science and society. Babbage's wide-ranging interests ran from economic theory and statistics, to lighthouse signalling and postal services. His book, Reflections on the Decline of Science in England and Some of its Causes (1830) reflected his attempts to reorganize and control the conduct of scientific activity at a national level. In addition, he published widely on theoretical and practical science and social reform. In this book, Anthony Hyman, the acknowledged expert on Babbage's life and work, has selected passages from these many publications--reflecting his innovative scientific work and his thoughts on such subjects as taxation, abolition of life peerage and the assurance of lives--subjects which anticipated the preoccupations of present day society.

                                Customer Reviews:

                                5 out of 5 stars Terrific Resource!.......2002-12-17

This wonderful fourth edition of this classic ISO 9000 resource was released in late 2002. The ISO 9000 Handbook Fourth Edition from Robert Peach contains all new content on the most recent revisions to ISO 9000 and includes a bonus CD-ROM containing transition guidance from each of QSU Publishing's Big Ten Registrars of North America along with the verbatim text of ISO 9000:2000, ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9004:2000. This is a very good deal considering that the standards alone, if purchased separately, cost more than the price of the fourth edition Handbook. It is also important to specify that you want The ISO 9000 Handbook Fourth Edition Edited by Robert Peach as there are several similar-sounding titles out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Desktop Aid for Implementors.......1999-10-31

Immensely useful to me as a implementor, thanks to the various subject matter experts that have contributed their knowledge. Gave me a good perspective on QS 9000.

3 out of 5 stars Nice printing but the Publisher skimped on bookbinding.......1999-09-29

The Publisher chose a hardbound book with gold foil stamping on the spine only with a nice UV coated dust jacket. The paper is a nice 90 lb enamel stock. But the publisher skimped on the book binding. On a two and 1/4 inch thick book the Publisher chose not to sew the binding. The Publisher chose not to burst-bind either. The binding is milled clean then a perfect bound notch was used with PUR glue. The book doesn't even have headbands which would have cost 1/10th of a cent per book! Why choose such nice printing and then skimp on the most important part, the binding? The binding is all right. The problem is that the price is not commensurate with the quality of the binding. McGraw-Hill priced this book like a text book where there is only a limited market and a limited time window the Publisher can sell the book. This is not the case with this title. The Publisher should engage in market segmentation pricing tactics that doesn't consider it's customers merely students with no choice in the purchase. I have only read the first 30 pages. I will review content when I'm done. Thanks Dave C.

1 out of 5 stars It doesn't provide me much help in understanding this topic........1999-09-15

Initially I didn't have any understanding on ISO 9000 and looking for a reference. I purchased this book and realized that it didn't provide much in understanding the core of this topic. However, it does mention clearly the histroy and development of this quality standard.

                                4 out of 5 stars A one stop ISO 9000 education!.......1998-07-03

Before reading this book I literally knew nothing about ISO 9000. The book takes you through the ISO process step by step from the history of ISO 9000 to registration. Robert Peach teaches you how to intergrate the ISO system into your various processes and create a quality management system.

A must read for all Management Representatives charged with implementing the ISO 9000 Quality Standard.

James Carville famously reminded Bill Clinton throughout 1992 that "it's the economy, stupid." Yet, for the last forty years, historians of modern America have ignored the economy to focus on cultural, social, and political themes, from the birth of modern feminism to the fall of the Berlin
Wall. Now a scholar has stepped forward to place the economy back in its rightful place, at the center of his historical narrative.
In More, Robert M. Collins reexamines the history of the United States from Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Bill Clinton, focusing on the federal government's determined pursuit of economic growth. After tracing the emergence of growth as a priority during FDR's presidency, Collins explores the
record of successive administrations, highlighting both their success in fostering growth and its partisan uses. Collins reveals that the obsession with growth appears not only as a matter of policy, but as an expression of Cold War ideology--both a means to pay for the arms build-up and proof of
the superiority of the United States' market economy. But under Johnson, this enthusiasm sparked a crisis: spending on Vietnam unleashed runaway inflation, while the nation struggled with the moral consequences of its prosperity, reflected in books such as John Kenneth Galbraith's The Affluent
Society and Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. More continues up to the end of the 1990s, as Collins explains the real impact of Reagan's policies and astutely assesses Clinton's "disciplined growthmanship," which combined deficit reduction and a relaxed but watchful monetary policy by the Federal
                                Reserve.
Writing with eloquence and analytical clarity, Robert M. Collins offers a startlingly new framework for understanding the history of postwar America.

                                5 out of 5 stars A New View.......2001-12-14

This book is a bit deceptive--it delivered far more than I expected. It treats the complicated economic developments of the past half-century in a clear and accessible fashion. But it also told me a surprising amount about the politics and presidents of the postwar era. I particularly liked the way it forced me to view Nixon, Reagan, and Clinton in a new light. Indeed, this book offers a new and illuminating interpretation of the entire postwar period.

                                      Book Description

This book fills the gap for a text that presents a theoretically-based critique of management knowledge in an accessible form relevant to MBA students and practitioners alike. Students have to learn and digest accepted "management knowledge" and practitioners look to gurus as a source of "management knowledge" without any appreciation of how secure these ideas may be. This book will therefore be relevant to both students and practitioners in questioning how far management research actually leads to genuine knowledge of organizations
