A number of alternative pricing rules and equilibrium concepts are considered (marginal pricing, constrained profit maximization, mark-up pricing, valuation equilibria, non-linear input-output models, etc.).

Don't be fooled..........2005-01-17

Do not be fooled into buying this book just because it's a recommended text for your university course. If you're actually studying genetics you'll need something far more comprehensive than this. If on the other hand you are studying biology, zoology or similar subjects and are taking a 'basic gentics' module, you won't find much in this book that can't be found in more general Biology books such as Life (Purves et al). Also, many of the answers to the questions at the end of each chapter are either confusing, or just wrong.

every english major and writer should have a freshman comp handbook. this one is okay. it covers everything well enough.and if it weren't for the Little, Brown Handbook, i might suggest the Scott, Foresman Handbook. But the little brown handbook is by far superior, and i suggest that anyone interested in the scott foresman, or any other freshman comp handbook, check out the little brown before making a purchase.

This book is aimed mostly at students and inexperienced writers. The subjects covered range from commonly-confused words to punctuation to creative inspiration to revision to research papers and business letters -- basically, everything. For students, there are sections on how to write for particular academic subjects.

As a general reference, this book has just about everything you'd need, although the sections on computerized research and word processing are a bit outdated. There is plenty of advice for people who need help with grammar or who are trying to make their writing less awkward and more effective. It is well-indexed, allowing you to quickly find answers and advice, which is good because plodding through the book sequentially (even with the help of the table of contents) would be very tedious.

Excellent college writing handbook.......1999-09-23

I'm an English instructor at Ohio State University. I chose this handbook above others (The Everyday Writer, The New St. Martin's Handbook) because it not only contains the usual grammar and style points in straightforward language, but also covers issues such as preparing to write, writing good arguments, avoiding argumentative fallacies, and how to respond to other people's written drafts in constructive ways. It's great to use as an instructional text because it comes with questions and exercises on the various sections. It's up-to-date about using visuals in texts, and using the web to research, and authoring websites. I'm using it for the first time to teach Sept-Dec 99, and I'll write back afterwards with a review of how successful it was and whether students liked it or not.

Pioneering Research; A Risk Worth Taking.......2005-10-31

Don has hit the nail on the head a second time (read his earlier book "To be a Scientist pub 1994") and certainly brings his own personal and valuable experiences into play when making such wide and stringent reports of the true impact and importance of Pioneering Research. It is more the pity that many CEOs of large conglomerates have not read this book and perhaps understood the book. "Ask not what it costs but the commercial value within quantified risk" is a better phrase that many cost conscious CEOs should learn. Prof Braben continues to show the way forward and the more the better to my mind. Keep up the good work. Good luck!

A meandering, unconvincing discussion.......2005-03-05

Donald Braben add his voice to a growing chorus of scientists and science policy analysts who believe that a larger share of the scientific research budget should be allocated to high creativity people who are permitted to follow their own personal research agenda. I am also of this opinion, but I cannot get much ammunition for my position from this book. The book does a lot of grumbling, tells many stories, and presents the author's distaste for peer review (I don't agree with him about this). But he has no in-depth case histories, no aggregate statistics, do discussion of what fields are most in need of this treatment, no discussion of how one assess the social value of a "creative" science policy, no comparative studies of different systems. In short, there is nothing useful here in support of a cogent policy position on the topic.

These trends are steadily strangling human ingenuity and undermining our very ability to cope.
The good news is that we can do something about these problems, and in principle, they should not be too difficult to solve. However, deeply entrenched attitudes can be a formidable barrier. Our major problem is that at the margin where greatness lies bureaucracy is strangling scientific creativity. Everything we value came out of the blue, out of the greatness of pioneering scientists and engineers. Such scientists as the Einsteins, driven solely by their restless spirits of enquiry, laid the foundations for a vast series of such unforeseen developments as the transistor and integrated circuitry, nuclear power, lasers and optoelectronics, and computers that today dominate everyday life. It is difficult to imagine life without them. Their work was not encouraged or stimulated. Revolutionary discoveries once emerged in the natural course of things. Human ingenuity does not need stimulating; we merely have to ensure that it is not being routinely suppressed. That vital condition was broadly satisfied from about the Renaissance until the 1970s, when the current obsessions with optimization and efficiency began. Our most urgent need, therefore, is to make the modest changes that will allow it to be satisfied once again.
