This book is the first comprehensive, modern introduction to the theory of central simple algebras over arbitrary fields. Starting from the basics, it reaches such advanced results as the Merkurjev-Suslin theorem. This theorem is both the culmination of work initiated by Brauer, Noether, Hasse and Albert and the starting point of current research in motivic cohomology theory by Voevodsky, Suslin, Rost and others. Assuming only a solid background in algebra, but no homological algebra, the book covers the basic theory of central simple algebras, methods of Galois descent and Galois cohomology, Severi-Brauer varieties, residue maps and, finally, Milnor K-theory and K-cohomology. The last chapter rounds off the theory by presenting the results in positive characteristic, including the theorem of Bloch-Gabber-Kato. The book is suitable as a textbook for graduate students and as a reference for researchers working in algebra, algebraic geometry or K-theory.

I grew up in the shadow of Dick and Jerry Chappell. I heard the stories of Bethesda and the Korean front lines, but I was a small boy listing to his heroes. Getting to read their letters and their thoughts so many years later, as an adult, is indeed a treat. This book is a chronical of what is right with America. Here are two farm boys who go off to serve their country and to have the adventure of a life time. They were honorable boys, and they became the finest of men. If you haven't read it, do yourself a favor spend some time with two real American Boys.

Excellent Introduction.......2003-11-05

I am half-way through this book and realize that I have used Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) for years. This was the approach we used because of HAZOP studies. If you look at the methodology, they are the same. It is an excellent book for first-pass economics of preventive maintenance (PM). Through numerous examples, he shows when to PM, when you are spending too much for PM, and when to just run the damn thing 'til it breaks. As I said, it is a great introduction. I have picked up Doc Palmer's book and can see I would be lost without preparation. If there are any short-comings, it is grammar and spelling. There are numerous typographical errors. Most engineers seem to have taken an-engineer's only english class in college. I found the errors troubling but the writing clear and concise. A very good book for a refresher (as in my case), or an introduction.

This book -written in Spanish- elaborates over two indisputable facts in the direction of intellectual capital. The first is that information is no longer a trivial management support resource. Information is an integral part of the business, when not the business itself. As such must be regarded, cared and controlled by the management groups. The second fact is that computing and communications technologies, inasmuch as they allow and facilitate the storage, organization, transmission, classification and consulting of business information, have the most power -greater than that of any other tool- to generate wealth in organizations. Simply stated, information is wealth and information technology is the best road to reach it.

These two facts are often ignored by organizations. Many managers express their agreement with both statements but their behavior -their preferences, their absence from key decisions, their priorities, their time allocation- send a different message. The implementation of information technology must be driven -promoted, pushed, motivated- by the organization strategies and objectives and not by the attraction of the most recent technology or management fad or by the whim of the area supervisor who wants just to automate the duties under his or her responsibility. The implementation of information technology is investment to generate wealth toward the future and not improvised expenditure to solve the routine problems of the present.

Everyone involved in either implementing or using information technology -senior executives, functional directors, operational managers, information professionals, software engineers, users, consultants, auditors, project leaders- must understand that the installation of business software, together with all computing and telecommunications hardware that surrounds it, has much more to do with dollars, profits, business processes and people than with bytes, microchips, record formats or code lines.
