I wish the publisher had made the working papers separate and not part of the bound book. Once you tear out the papers, you have two choices. Tear off the back cover and run the risk of losing your text pages, or have a huge gap in the book where the working papers were.

A complete skills-training system.......1999-07-19

While making the transition from Sales Management to Sales and Managment Training, I was fortunate enough to have been introduced to Lester Shapiro and his Training Effectiveness Handbook.

Being new to the training field, I did not find the book to be an easy read the first time through. But after applying the pieces of the puzzle one at a time, the logic in the inductive process and it's tie-in with "Guided Discovery" became apparent. At that point, on re-reading the book, I would categorize the book as an easy read.

By applying the techniques introduced by Mr. Shapiro, In less then one year as a trainer, I have written two major training programs that have proven successful in my organization. This book has provided me with a skill that will help further my career in the training industry.

This is an extremely well-written, enjoyable series of essays on the art and craft of beekeeping. The author is a scientist who really knows and enjoys his subject and this shows through brilliantly. The book is an interesting and easy read for anyone wanting to know more about bees and beekeeping. Also a nice second step if you already know some basics.

This book summarizes developments related to a class of methods called Stochastic Decomposition (SD) algorithms, which represent an important shift in the design of optimization algorithms. Unlike traditional deterministic algorithms, SD combines sampling approaches from the statistical literature with traditional mathematical programming constructs (e.g. decomposition, cutting planes etc.). This marriage of two highly computationally oriented disciplines leads to a line of work that is most definitely driven by computational considerations. Furthermore, the use of sampled data in SD makes it extremely flexible in its ability to accommodate various representations of uncertainty, including situations in which outcomes/scenarios can only be generated by an algorithm/simulation. The authors report computational results with some of the largest stochastic programs arising in applications. These results (mathematical as well as computational) are the `tip of the iceberg'. Further research will uncover extensions of SD to a wider class of problems. Audience: Researchers in mathematical optimization, including those working in telecommunications, electric power generation, transportation planning, airlines and production systems. Also suitable as a text for an advanced course in stochastic optimization.

Dave was my roommate aboard USS ORISKANY prior to his capture in 1967. As a Naval Academy graduate and Naval Aviator he was assigned to an attack squadron flying the A-4 Skyhawk. I met Dave the day we departed NAS Alameda for deployment to Southeast Asia, and Vietnam. He had his fiance Karen aboard for a short time in the officer's wardroom for coffee and last minute good byes. The next time he saw Karen was 5.5 years later after his release from a North Vietnam prisoner of war camp. I saw him again at his wedding!

This is terrific read along with Zalin Grants "Over the Beach" about the war, it's history, and the toll it took on countless lives.

WOW... and i thought i had a few tough years!.......2001-09-04

i thought i had lived through some tough times before reading Dave's story... if life has got you down, choose this book, you'll begin to feel you too can survive and excel even in the most demanding situations. Dave ties in his Vietnam experience to create powerful insights for daily living in part 2.

"THE WAYS WE CHOOSE" LESSONS FROM A POW.......2001-07-26

"The Ways We Choose" is truly a lesson in life. While reading it I asked myself how I handle adversity. What do I do when life gets tough? As a prisoner of war for 5 1/2 years, Dave Carey feels that his experience can be used as an analogy for facing problems and changes in our own lives. Hopefully, none of us will have to endure the trauma of being a POW, however, Dave lists simple factors for his success in the harsh environment he was existing in. He believes that these guidelines can be directly translated into every life. He discusses the importance of communicating in every aspect of our daily life. The book has helped me to live "one day at a time." It also encouraged me to ask myself not only how I cope with the problems of life but more importantly, how do I CHOOSE to cope. Dave Carey's witness to his faith completes the message in this outstanding read. The author has a great gift of sharing himself with his readers. You won't want to miss this adventure in life.

Doing statistical analysis with Excel can be cumbersome if you don't have a good reference handy. This book has it all: Getting started with Excel, working with data / charts, describing your data, probability distributions, statistical inference, regression and correlation, multiple regression, analysis of variance, time series, and quality control. Many concept tutorials which can be done with the disk illustrate the principles explained in the book.

Dr. Pace did an excellent job of making current anthropological issues in the Amazon available in a clear, concise and easily digested book. I especially enjoyed the simplicity with which the intricate web of economics, ecology, poloitics, and class issues was detailed. The book is loaded with information gathered from local inhabitants from rural peasants to urban politicians. Sufficient background is provided to make sense of current issues and help in understanding the processes at work in the Amazon.
