Book Description

With Cold War politics lost as the organizing principle behind international politics, development has become the most import policy goal of every international organization. There is an underside (and a human side) to development, and feminism has made inroads into the highly technical debates and frothy prophecies by examining what the future really holds for the people who will live it. This book highlights the ways in which feminist analysis has contributed to a richer understanding of international development and globalization. By combining theoretical, empirical, and political perspectives and discusses cutting-edge debates around development, globalization, economic restructuring, and feminist economics, Gender, Development and Globalization presents the ultimate primer on global feminist economics.

This is a great book but it would benefit readers to have a base on economics. This is NOT easy reading. For a relatively quick reader, one chapter takes well over an hour to get through. Full of valuable information-know economics and international politics.

"George Huber makes an important contribution with profound insights on what the future firm will look like. It will be congruent with its environment. To realize opportunities from continuing advances in science and technology and environmental complexity, the successful firm in the future will be especially good at gaining environmental intelligence, learning and integrating knowledge, and being innovative and flexible. This is not a fanciful prophesy; it is a necessary logical conclusion that Huber draws from an extensive body of scientific knowledge."

--Andrew H. Van de Ven, University of Minnesota, Past President of the Academy of
Management, and coauthor of Organizational Change and Innovation Processes

“Huber gives a compelling account of the future landscape that many managers have to face today. Filled with solid academic research laced with real-world examples, Huber not only conveys the shape of that landscape, but also the roadmap to navigate it.”

--Kathleen M. Eisenhardt, Stanford University and coauthor of Competing on the Edge: Strategy as Structured Chaos

"This is an important book for any manager who faces a rapidly changing and increasingly competitive environment--which is to say, virtually every manager. Huber makes a cogent case for the fact that businesses will face much more dynamic and competitive environments in the future than they face today. More importantly, he offers practical advice for how managers can prepare for the uncertain future they face. Clearly written and carefully grounded in the best research evidence available, this book stands head and shoulders above the many management books offering short-term fads, fashions, and therapies of the moment."

--Richard T. Mowday, University of Oregon, former President of the Academy of Management, and former Editor of the Academy of Management Journal

Survival depends on the ability to read imminent shifts in the environment and respond accordingly. This holds true for any living system, but it is especially true for firms today.

The business environment is now changing rapidly, but will change even more rapidly in the future. Only firms that can respond to these changes will survive. It is important to know, then, how business’s future landscape will look. George Huber’s new book, The Necessary Nature of Future Firms, describes this landscape clearly and credibly and makes explicit the organizational attributes and management practices firms must possess to be among the ranks of the “future firms.”

Advances in science and technology will continue to affect business environments, making them more complex, dynamic and competitive. Moreover, this complexity and dynamism will increase at increasing rates. As the book makes clear, successful firms will cope with or exploit these changes by increasing their capabilities for correctly interpreting threats and opportunities, making decisions, acquiring and managing knowledge, innovating, and changing while simultaneously dealing with the needs for efficiency, flexibility, and employee commitment.

The Necessary Nature of Future Firms is written for managers, especially those managing change. Professionals in a wide variety of organizational roles will find it a particularly useful reference for its foresight and as an invaluable tool in winning approval for projects and initiatives. Academics in change management, information systems, organizational science, strategy, and human resources management can draw on the book as a supplementary text or as a source for lecture materials.

References housed in endnotes rather than in the text contribute to the book’s readability and ease of use, as does the accessible writing style. But for all its accessibility and reader friendliness, The Necessary Nature of Future Firms is still firmly grounded in scholarship. Hundreds of authoritative works and systematic studies specifically inform this book, as do Huber’s own studies and his interviews with over 100 middle- and upper-level managers about changes in their organizations. To add meaning and interest, the book’s insights and conclusions are elaborated with real world examples.

5 out of 5 stars For managers at all levels.......2004-01-29

There is a lot about this book that sets it apart from other advice-to-managers books. Perhaps the most significant is that it offers actionable suggestions to managers at all levels. It is not just for the CEO or other high level managers. In addition, the suggestions are not just opinions or the experiences of one company. They are backed with high-quality studies that are applicable across a broad range of firms. Even with my thirty years as a manager at a Fortune 50 company, I found the book to offer many opportunities for improving the competitive advantage of my function.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2004-01-07

I took the title of my review from one of the 12 reviewer testimonials that appear on the back cover and on the back of the the first page:"This book is a must read for managers concerned with guiding their organizations into the information age. THE NECESSARY NATURE OF FUTURE FIRMS represents the first rigorous in-depth effort at anticipating the shape of new organizations by combining and interpreting vast management research literature and presenting it to managerial audiences. The book is very accessible to a broad managerial audience."

What first attracted me to the book is that the majority of the testimonials are from very, very accomplished authorities, people who seem to have reached really high stature as faculty at the top business school AND who have been successful authors themselves of books for managers. What then impressed me was how readable the book is. Knowing that it was written by a professor, I suspected the worst, but found that the book was actually an enjoyable read, with lots of examples, some from the author's own experience. But make no mistake, this isn't a shallow book with large print, lots of white space, three bullets per page, and unsubstantiated assertions. To the contrary, from two other testimonials: "This book stands head and shoulders above the many management books offering short-term fads, fashions, and therapies of the moment." and "THE NECESSARY NATURE OF FUTURE FIRMS is cleverly written, grounded in history, integrates an unusually extensive survey of organizational research, and is filled with evocative examples and practical guidelines." I found these comments to be on target.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life.......2000-04-12

Dr. Cranton - a pioneer in the anti-aging medical field - writes a fascinating account of the role of hormones in the aging process and how hormone replacement can slow that process. Included is reference to current research as well as to the extraordinary results his patients have achieved. After reading Dr. Cranton's book, I began taking melatonin and now sleep much more soundly; I changed the kind of thyroid medication I've been taking so that I no longer feel cold and sluggish (even though all the tests I had taken showed my thyroid functioning was within "normal range"); I changed my estrogen replacement medication and began taking HGH. I'm feeling better than I have in years!

                Book Description

Almost fifteen years after the end of the Cold War, the process of creating a "Europe whole and free" is incomplete and likely to be so for the foreseeable future. In this volume, a group of highly distinguished contributors from both East and West examines the complicated and multi-faceted process of NATO and EU enlargement in the context of the changed global situation since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

This book examines the enlargement processes not only from the perspective of the West and western institutions, but also from the point of view of the former communist countries. If an enlarged NATO and EU are to be stable and successful in the long run, they must take account of the wishes and interests of both their new, former-communist members and those European states that will not become members of either NATO or the EU in the foreseeable future.

Contributors include Christopher Bobinski (Unia & Polska), Vladimir Baranovsky (Institute of the World Economy and International Relations), Heather Grabbe (Center for European Reform), Karl-Heinz Kamp (Konrad Adenauer Foundation), Charles King (Georgetown University), Alexander J. Motyl (Center for Global Change and Governance), Zaneta Ozolina (University of Latvia), Alexander Sergounin (Nizhny Novgorod Linguistic University), William Wallace (London School of Economics), and Leonid Zaiko (Strategy Center).

                  Book Description

Recent political developments on the Korean peninsula suggest both the possibility and desirability for the neighboring powers to establish a new framework for regional peace. The US and North Korea have managed to reach an agreement to reduce mutually hostile threats on a reciprocal basis, and to normalize diplomatic relations by removing economic sanctions. They have thus created conditions potentially favorable for the expansion of trade and the inflow of economic assistance and foreign direct investment to North Korea.

A crucial question, however, is will North Korea choose to transform its internal system and adopt an open-door policy in an effort to revive its stagnant economy? The distinguished contributors to this volume address the central issue of the development potential of the North Korean economy and the potential compatibility of economic reform with the maintenance of internal political stability. They examine what will be needed in the way of reform for North Korea to build its social infrastructure and manage its industrial transition to become part of the global market economy. Some possible lessons from the experiences of China's economic reform since 1979 and German reunification are drawn, and some sharp insights are provided into the economic forces that will play a major role in shaping the future course of North Korea.

This timely book will be of great interest to policymakers, scholars, and students of Asian and transition economies.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview, easy-to-read.......1998-08-01

I have to put in a 401k plan for a small business. I knew nothing about them and had to get a quick overview. This book was very helpful.

The book is unusually clear and easy-to-read. Very well organized with many summaries. I read most of it in just 4 hours on a night flight when I was really jet lagged. Yet I still easily read it -- just my kind of book.

                        Book Description

This important book is the re-titled third edition of the extremely well received and widely used Agricultural Extension (van den Ban & Hawkins, 1988, 1996). Building on the previous editions, Communication for Rural Innovation maintains and adapts the insights and conceptual models of value today, while reflecting many new ideas, angles and modes of thinking concerning how agricultural extension is taught and carried through today.Since the previous edition of the book, the number and type of organisations that apply communicative strategies to foster change and development in agriculture and resource management has become much more varied and this book is aimed at those who use communication to facilitate change in agriculture and resource management. Communication for Rural Innovation is essential reading for process facilitators, communication division personnel, knowledge managers, training officers, consultants, policy makers, extension specialists and managers of agricultural extension or research organisations. The book can also be used as an advanced introduction into issues of communicative intervention at BSc or MSc level.

                          Book Description

Molecules are found in a large variety of astronomical environments, ranging from comets in the solar system to galaxies at high redshift. This book brings together astronomers, physicists and chemists to discuss the use of molecules as probes of astrophysical parameters, explore their role in the evolution of astronomical objects, and study the basic chemical processes that occur in space. The enormous progress in observational techniques is illustrated by studies of the physics and chemistry on scales comparable to the protosolar nebulae around high- and low-mass forming stars and planetary systems. Elegant new experimental techniques for the measurement of gas-phase reactions at low temperatures, the analysis of spectra, and the investigation of surface adsorbates on interplanetary dust particles and meteorites are presented; the importance of accurate quantum chemical calculations is emphasized. Present knowledge of the composition of dust grains and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is summarized. Other topics include models and observations of jets and outflows, photon- and X-ray-dominated regions, masers in and outside our galaxy, the comet D/Shoemaker-Levy collision with Jupiter, the envelopes and photospheres of late-type stars including brown dwarfs, diffuse and translucent clouds, and external galaxies ranging from the nearby Magellanic Clouds to distant quasar absorption line systems and starburst galaxies at the edge of the Universe.

                            Book Description

Any concentration of a substance measured in a living or non-living system results from its distribution among all of the environmental compartments: air, water, sediments, and biota. The transfer of a substance from one compartment to another is regulated by physical forces and the chemical properties of the substance and also those of the compartments. When transfer processes are nearly constant in time, a substance will achieve predictable equilibria distributions. It is of utmost importance that students, environmental scientists, and policymakers understand the basic processes which control the distribution of a substance in order to interpret measurements obtained from within a limited number of compartments.

                                5 out of 5 stars Coma's Mysteries Unraveled.......2003-02-13

This is the story of a thoughtful husband, a good patient, and a courageous man. Anyone interested in things medical or who has an ill loved one will enjoy this book. The author contracted Hepatitis C from a tainted blood transfusion. This disease caused a sort of domino-like effect causing among other things the need for (so far) three liver transplants. While in a coma he was aware of his surroundings to a point. This is a recounting of what he thought was happening to and around him, and what was actually happening. It is fascinating stuff. His compassion for families of other patients is touching. And his ability to lift the shroud of mystery that hides the state of COMA is uplifting. An idea as monumental in life saving potential as either penicillin or the Salk vaccine is PRESUMED CONSENT. The time is now, and hopefully this idea will be implemented in the immediate future.

ComaLife is Dr. Darling's gripping story of his surreal life "inside" his coma,
which included an angel tabby cat who stayed by his bedside until he was out of
danger and hilarious adventures with Barbra Streisand, Kathy Lee Gifford, Dennis
Rodman, Bill Gates, and other loveable characters. At times while in his coma,
Dr. Darling could see and hear those around him, but he couldn't respond.
Alternating chapters tell his uplifting, real-life struggle of survival against
hepatitis C, cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer, diabetes, a heart attack and
three liver transplant operations. Once you begin ComaLife, it is almost
impossible to put it down. All sorts of emotions are evoked: humor, sadness,
and joy, which contribute to an incredible book. In addition, Dr. Darling shows
great appreciation for caregivers (e.g., his wife, Kress) and how important they
are to the ill. A true gem of a book that is uplifting for all and especially as
a gift for the ill! A book like no other!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! True life experience - a great help to families.......2003-02-02

This is a wonderful book, touching the heart and soul of the reader written by a man who has endured so much and still has so much humor and quick wit in telling his story. Great vision from the patient, watching and feeling, but unable to do anything about the situation at the time. This is extremely well written and a tremendous asset to families that face similar instances with their loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars Harrowing journey told with humor and pathos.......2003-01-30

Richard Darling allows us in on his "coma life" and invites us along on his amazing journey through his life-threatening crisis. Richard is one of millions of Americans who suffer from hep C and is one of the few who has survived three liver transplants. His story is life-affirming and humorous, despite the dire subject matter. This book is for anyone who has faced a medical crisis but most especially for anyone who has had a loved one face a serious medical condition or crisis. Even more importantly, it is the story of some dedicated and compassionate caregivers who have made his journey possible.

                                5 out of 5 stars ComaLife.......2003-01-30

Dr. Darling has written a tome of rare insight, dignity, and maturity interspersed with wry humor. He's been to the brink against hepatitis C, liver cancer, diabetes, a heart attack, three liver transplant operations, and more, and embraced his struggle of survival with not just courage, but understanding. Dr. Darling lets his reader experience the serene, surreal life "inside" his coma and, if for no other reason, this very human insight makes this book a literary must for all, and especially for patients who need their spirits uplifted.

The life of Sir William Hamilton is rich in contradictions: hedonist, scholar and an aesthete with a Rabelaisian streak, he represented the epitome of honourable public service until, as the eighteenth century drew to its climax, his personal life and career were flung into freefall when he became involved in the most scandalous ménage à trois of the century. The son of a favourite courtier, William Hamilton began life sharing a wet-nurse with the future George III, and spent much of his childhood in the discordant atmosphere of the Hanoverian household. After several years as a soldier, courtier and MP, he turned to the diplomatic world and, in 1764, was sent to Naples as Envoy Extraordinary to the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. There Hamilton could indulge the two passions: volcanoes and vases. His meticulous observations of Vesuvius earned him a Fellowship of the Royal Society. His unique collection of vases was eventually acquired by the British Museum. Later in life he also worked with Wedgwood and Boulton. Yet, for most people, William Hamilton is not remembered as a diplomat, art-collector, naturalist, musician and scholar but as the cuckolded husband of Emma Hamilton, mistress of the heroic Lord Nelson. Using the substantial correspondence between them and, for the first time, Hamilton's unpublished notebooks, David Constantine throws new light on the relationship between the aristocratic Sir William and the relentlessly self-improving, irredeemably vulgar Emma. Interweaving fascinating detail with a broad historical sweep David Constantine brings to life this essentially private man.

                                    Book Description

This collection of short stories, full of laughs, insight, and family photos, offers a glimpse into the daily trials of the wives of working cowboys. It can be a difficult life, but is always rewarding in the end. Whether learning to back up a gooseneck horse trailer, towing her husband's truck, or covering-up for a mischievous dog, the author always finds humor when it seems all would be lost. More than just a book about ranch life, these stories about marriage and family, reach out to all women.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, Unique and Readable Book.......2001-08-08

Many in this sophisticated world never read the "real" stuff of ranching and cowboy life. It's nothing like "Dallas" or the rich Texas cattlemen Oprah fought. Jean Bowser depicts a life full of richness. While pay and appreciative ranch owners may be scarce, and the work hard, the author conveys a love of family, the character of the livestock and animals they work with, and the allure of living close to the land. And she does it with insight, warmth and humor. I believe even a city-dweller reader will laugh and empathize with "Such is the life of a Cowboy's Wife."

5 out of 5 stars definately hats off to jean bowser.......2001-03-16

A must read book!!! This book will keep you rolling! Even if you have never lived on a ranch before, you will now understand the trials of every day ranch life. Through a ranch wifes eyes. Jean does a great job with the glossary, and the over-all telling of these great stories. I really felt like I was part of it.
