I love the diversity of perspectives that Boutte takes with this book: scientific, anthropological, sociological, biological, historical, and academic.

She challenges us to broaden our definition of the word multiculturalism and shows us the differences between race and ethnicity.

    Fine, fine text!

    Book Description

Everyone in business today has heard of the Theory of Constraints (TOC), developed by Eli Goldratt in his groundbreaking book The Goal. However, very few people know how to implement it in a manufacturing organization. The Manufacturer's Guide to Implementing the Theory of Constraints answers all your questions and more. Written by Mark Woeppel, the leading expert on (TOC), this is the only complete step-by-step guide for implementing TOC in a manufacturing organization. It serves simultaneously as a guide and a workbook with a scope that includes the logistical, pricing, and measurement systems. The author provides a complete implementation checklist, sample policies, and procedures documents that are included as boilerplates in the appendix. He explains the rationale behind the implementation process and includes real life "war stories" that illustrate it. The Manufacturer's Guide to Implementing the Theory of Constraints - containing advice and examples - presents a proven method of implementation and short cuts to success. You will find a wealth of resource material, procedures, and policies that help you avoid costly mistakes and speed up your implementation process.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to succeed with implementing TOC.......2005-12-04

There are, today, many good books on the Theory of Constraints, or "TOC". If you are relatively new to TOC, books from authors like Eli Goldratt, Bill Dettmer, Eli Schragenheim, Debra Smith, Lisa Scheinkopf, and many others are "must reads."

These books, however, generally focus on explaining the details of TOC. This is necessary. In order to succeed with TOC you have to know what it is and how and why it works.

But subject matter knowledge alone is not enough, if you want to actually use TOC in business. You must also have a valid roadmap for implementing it.

In my experience, this is where many people fail with TOC. They believe they can "just wing it" and so try to implement TOC without having a valid roadmap. The results are all too predictable: they wind up lost in the weeds, the implementation fails, and the company becomes blocked from further improvement for a very long time.

Mark's book is valuable because it provides a real roadmap for implementing TOC in a manufacturing organization.

Throughout the book, you have the voice of a successful TOC consultant leading you to understand how to implement TOC in a manufacturing organization. The writing is clear and direct. The advice is concrete and actionable.

The book also provides examples of various charts, forms and procedures that you can use as patterns for the materials you will need in your implementations.

In closing, I am highly satisfied with this book and don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is considering implementing TOC in a manufacturing organization.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally - a PRACTICAL guide.......2005-08-21

Mark's book is an excellent, easy to understand read, which I found extremely helpful.

Most books on TOC deal with a lot of theory, or case studies. This is the first book I've read that goes into incredible detail on how to implement TOC using the author's years of experience in this field.

A must-read if you are plannig to implement TOC.

5 out of 5 stars The goal at work.......2003-01-21

As an APICS member, this was a must. Concise enough, it projected the TOC concepts into applied scenarios so that one can actually measure the value of the theory.
There are not many good books on TOC apart from Goldratt's novels, so buy it.

5 out of 5 stars One of Mark's very satisfied customers.......2001-02-21

Having worked with Mark since 1993 on our TOC implementation and refinement, I can tell you that Dixie Iron Works would have been where we are that much quicker, had this book already been written. A MUST-read for the TOC implementation you want to proceed smoothly and quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Policies, Procedures, Measurements for Operations that Work!.......2001-02-12

This book is not just for manufacturers, but holds enormous value to any operation. I am impressed by how much practical help is packed into this book. It bridges the gap between a training program or reading books on implementing the Theory of Constraints in Operations and the detailed work that must be done. This book is a must to ensure both a successful and a lasting implementation of Drum, Buffer, Rope and Buffer Management in Operations.

      5 out of 5 stars Experiential Learning.......2007-03-08

I recommend this book to people using experiential exercises to teach. I used one of the exercises from this book in a workshop and the students both had fun and got the insights. I have read many of the exercises and plan to use them as I develop workshops that center around conflict. In any case, the exercises are well designed. You'll get the purpose of the exercise and what it's intended to teach, equipment needed (e.g. handout or flipchart), precise directions for the students, what to expect, and insights to share for group learning. The book errs on giving you more information that you probably need to carry out the exercise.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a good book in business games.......2007-01-12

I have bought many books with hundreds of business games. Unlike the rest of the books I have read, it goes beyond the games, it gives you not only the materials and explanation on how it works but tells you what you may say and the theory behind the game. It also has different options for putting your own agenda depending on the time you have available and give you external resources.

If you want something practical and useful, this is the one

5 out of 5 stars Training and OD Professionals: Get This One!!.......2004-02-21

The "Conflict and Communication Activity Book" is an excellent resource for trainers and facilitators in any organization. I particularly liked how Withers and Lewis formatted the book, defining up front the purpose as well as the equipment, prep and time needed for each specific exercise. The clear instructions and helpful advice provided for each activity make them a breeze for any professional to use. Well done!! As I read through it the first time, I found myself book-marking several of the activities to make a point of trying in the near future. I long ago arrived at the conclusion that no organization will EVER stop dealing with conflict and communication issues. They're universal. Thanks for giving me thirty more creative exercises to include in my bag of tricks!!

The Heart of Teaching offers practical guidance in designing lessons and classroom activities that are powerfully effective for all types of students, including those placed at risk of educational failure due to linguistic, socioeconomic, racial, and geographic factors. The approach is easily geared to standards and can be used to strengthen and enrich scripted lessons or mandated curricular units. With a strong emphasis on literacy, the book shows teachers how to assess a lesson plan and then how to design activities and exercises that can meaningfully engage all students, even those who have difficulty in school. The book also shows teachers how to use learning centers for differentiating lessons and for breaking the classroom into small, participatory settings.

Sirota's book provides educators with a crucial guide to what must happen in order to rescue our rapidly deteriorating educational system. Sirota, a master teacher, shows that when students become invested in and responsible for their own learning, passionate and meaningful education can return to the classroom. These practical,hands-on,student-centered lessons show teachers how to do just that. A must-read.

5 out of 5 stars High Impact Book .......2006-03-27

This has been an eye opener for me. The lessons are clear and concise, and walk the fine line between upholding the "standards" and making the curriculum entirely relevant to each of my students. I work in a racially diverse community, with various backrounds and language skills, and find these lessons particulary refreshing. The lessons speak EXACTLY to my challenges and give me helpful guidance for dealing with issues of diversity. The book speaks to core challenges that we all have to contend with including troubled students, overcrowded classrooms, and effective management systems. Through the guiding reflection questions, the principles help me connect the curriculum to my studnets. The last chapter is the coup de gras, bringing together the concepts in a way that I can use them in my classroom.

I wish this book had been written 14 years ago when I began teaching! My students are happier with the lessons and I find this whole process of reworking my lessons so rejuvenating --I'm thrilled to be excited about teaching again.

5 out of 5 stars You Can Teach the Bible so that Group Members Learn!.......2000-04-24

This easy to read book is filled with many practical suggestions on how to prepare a variety of Bible Studies. Elmer Towns does a wonderful job in teaching principles. The examples of Bible studies followed by a step-by-step outline in how to prepare a study are tremendous helps! The emphasis is on not just lecturing on a certain passage or theme rather on how to get the group memebers to read, understand and learn from the text being read! As a professor in a Bible Institute here in Peru I have used and will continue to use many of the principles in this book both personally to prepare studies and in courses on how to study and teach the Bible. A wonderful companion to this book is the video series by Elmer Towns which is based upon this book. If you are looking for help, ideas and wonderful suggestions on how to teach the Bible in a way that the group members will really learn and be involved in the study...read this book! The only problem...when you finish you will want to learn more about preparing and teaching Bible studies!

                        Book Description

One of the most pathbreaking and influential business books of the 1990s is The Corporation of the 1990s by Michael Scott Morton. Its expert view of how information technology would influence organizations and their ability to survive and prosper in the 1990s has become the benchmark of thinking about information technology. Now, in a supporting companion volume, Information Technology and the Corporation of the 1990s makes available the research on which The Corporation of the 1990s was based. The research was conducted at the Sloan School of Management at MIT by the Management in the 1990s program. The program was funded by a group of 12 industrial and government sponsors from the United States and Britain which included American Express, Digital Equipment Corporation, Eastman Kodak, British Petroleum, MCI Communications, General Motors, U.S. Army, ICL Ltd., Internal Revenue Service, Ernst and Young, BellSouth, and CIGNA Corporation. Information Technology and the Corporation of the 1990s aims to disseminate ideas on how organizations can manage the impact of information technology, and also to raise issues and stimulate further thought by both academics and professionals. The book is divided into three sections which cover the information technology revolution, strategic options, and organization and management responses. It incorporates the work of many important scholars including Charles Jonscher, Michael J. Piore, Thomas W. Malone. JoAnne Yates, Robert I. Benjamin, Gary W. Loveman, Eric von Hippel, Edgar H. Schein, Stanley M. Besen, Garth Saloner, N. Venkatraman, Akbar Zaheer, John C. Henderson, Jay C. Cooprider, Kevin Crowston, Jeongsuk Koh, Gordon Walker, Laura Poppo, John S. Lynch, Paul Osterman, Thomas A. Kochan, and John Paul MacDuffie.
