Book Description
Opacity is a quantity which determines the transport of radiation through matter, and is important in many problems in physics and astronomy. To calculate opacities one requires atomic data for a large number of processes involving the absorption and scattering of radiation. Stellar opacities are of particular interest in astrophysics because of their importance for theories of stellar structure and stellar pulsations. Taking advantage of advances in computational atomic and plasma physics and of the availability of powerful supercomputers, a collaborative effort - the international Opacity Project - has been made to compute accurate atomic data required for opacity calculations. The work includes computation of energy levels, oscillator strengths, photoionisation cross sections and parameters for pressure broadening of spectral lines. Several different methods of computation have been used to calculate the same data thereby providing a check on the validity of the data. The Opacity Project Team is made up of 30 experts drawn from 13 leading laboratories and observatories in atomic physics and astrophysics in the USA, Europe and South America. The Project has been running since 1986. ^IThe Opacity Project Volume 1 is the first of a two-volume reference work produced by the international Opacity Project. It is divided into two parts: * Reprints of 31 key research papers elaborating the theoretical physical basis and computational methods used to produce the data. These papers provide essential background for researchers to understand how the data are produced. * Tables of energy levels and oscillator strengths for atoms and ions of the elements He to Si. Volume 2 contains tables of energy levels and oscillator strengths for the elements P to Fe. The amount of data will be similar to that of Volume 1.

Opacity Project.......2002-09-25
The work of a large number of scientists in the UK and the US,
this volume is a definitive description of modern methods of
computing data for the opacity of high-temperature plasmas,
and an extensive tabulation of results. It is a milestone in
the progress in this field.

A handbook which combines theory with practice, aimed at Consultants, Trainers and leaders of Organizational Change. The handbook, (with accompanying software and a Web site offering "modular" download capability) aims to help trainers: a.) Understand the Foundations of Appreciative Inquiry; b.) Appreciate the wide range of applications for Appreciative Inquiry; c.) Facilitate the teaching/coaching of others in introducing Appreciative Inquiry to a new group. Thus, tools and activities are included as Powerpoint applications, to facilitate group teaching and dissemination.
Customer Reviews:
Appreciative Inquiry Basics.......2006-09-28
I think this book is an essential first book on the theory and practical application of the positve appreciative process. It defines the terms, provides the research and background of the process and gives first hand stories of its application in the real world.
Appreciative Inquiry.......2006-07-11
Excellent, I was very satisfied with the theoretical explanation as well as the practical guides for solving the change management issues.
incredible resource for every change agent .......2004-08-02
The handbook is clearly written and introduces not only a new paradigm in thinking about orgaisational change work it also supports change agents in their endeavour to create sustainable and learning organisations. Great practical materials and tools across the spectrum of AI are designed with a lot of ideas how to apply any AI initiative.
This book is well organized and readable and a must for every OD practicioner and change agent.
An Extraordinary Tool For Leaders.......2004-06-28
Appreciative Inquiry Handbook offers a rich, navigational guide for industries across the spectrum. Appreciative Inquiry Handbook reflects a new paradigm in American and global industry; a must-read for industry leaders!
Appreciative Intent.......2004-06-11
This handbook guides you in applying appreciative inquiry methods in a variety of settings. We have had good results conducting two facilitation assignments with "Appreciative Intent".
In our most recent assignment, our client was impressed with the quality and quantity of the information gathered. Additionally, members of the client's leadership were also impressed with the level of participation from some of the more "quiet" people in the organization. The one-on-one questionnaire technique levels the playing field for people with a more introverted personality. Also, if you like applying a "Theory of Constraints" approach to operations you will observe that using the interview/questionnaire approach creates a multi-channel process when brain storming. (i.e. more conversations can be carried on simultaneously, thereby creating a larger stream of information or ideas in less time)
The CD alone is worth the investment!

Book Description
A Kernel in the Pod is a spellbinding autobiography about one man's journey to becoming a Physician Assistant and carving out his niche in a--sometimes hostile--medical practice world. Michael Jones weaves a riveting chronicle that reads like an adventure novel carefully seasoned with hilarious anecdotes. The reader is transported from the hills of Tennessee, to the hills of Afghanistan; from a plush suburban sub-specialty clinic to a Third World slum; from the hot, dry, crowded streets of Cairo to the lonely backwoods of Michigan's snowy Upper Peninsula and finally to a world class medical center.
What is it like to practice medicine in America--legally--without having the abbreviation "M.D." after your name? Mr. Jones takes us on a very candid trip through the inner workings of the medical practice community and gives an in-the-trenches account of what's it like to establish himself as a clinician in the face of what seems like insurmountable odds. It is a vividly told story that will delight not only midlevel clinicians and midlevel wannabes, but to everyone--be they caregiver or patient.
Customer Reviews:
depressing.......2007-03-28
After reading the review by the person who said there's only 30-50 pages about the PA profession in the first 260, I decided I would reluctantly purchase this book as those 50 pages were some of the few offered on Amazon about PA autobiography. In fact, that reviewer was wrong, and most of the book is about practicing as a PA. However, the author's choices about what to include seem odd. The book comes across as mostly venting about his mistreatment at the hands of various people, while he mentions only in passing attending conferences and his expertise in headache treatments. In the Acknowledgements, he mentions that he started publishing almost immediately out of PA school. Including more information about these aspects of his life would have made for a fuller picture of him as a person, a balanced view of the PA profession, and a more interesting story-line.
That said, the venting seems totally justified. In fact, the book is out-right depressing. If this book were the only information I had about the PA profession, I would probably avoid being a PA like the plague.
Also of note is the fact that the author seems to be a devout Christian, which may turn off some readers and attract others.
The writing is casual and the book is a fast read. It is easy to skim large sections and then jump back in without too much loss.
Overall, I would not recommend this book to those interested in becoming PAs. The professional experiences are a horror, and the section about the author's training is probably outdated as far as the application and decision-making process are concerned.
Very interesting!.......2005-12-05
I found this book to keep my interest and to be very enjoyable to read. As a future PA I found the book sort of upsetting and could possibly turn many people off to the PA career path. I also found many of the author's actions to be very odd and did not agree with most of his religous/family/career choices. Even so, I really liked the book and would highly recommend it.
You don't have to be in the medical field to enjoy this book.......2003-10-22
I laughed myself silly and then cryed with the Jones family. I think that life is sometimes stranger than fiction. I found it spellbinding. I think that Mike's ability to land on his feet at times when it seemed impossible to do so was remarkable. I would recommend for anyone (not just those in the medical field) to read as a comment how one person can overcome discouraging circumstances.
Not just about being a PA.......2003-08-21
This book brought me to tears. Not because of anything related to being a P.A. Actually, about half of this book is about being part of a large, international mission. Having served with a large mission for 18 years (in some of the same locations Mike visited, actually) and gone through some of the same heartaches he and his family went through, I could really relate to the pain he experienced. It was wonderful to see that someone else had gone through it, too, and could do a good job describing what it was like. A good book for missions administrators.
Simply a great book.......2003-08-06
When I read the great review about Mr. Jones' book in the Mining Journal, I had to buy it. I am a RN and I personally knew Mike. I worked with him during those difficult years that he shares in his book. The book was hilarious, I laughed until I cried, and not just because I knew some of the characters. But I was disappointed in Mike because he tells the story in a humble way. leaving out much about himself and his family that would have put him in a better light. He is the most compassionate caregiver I've ever met. He experienced some difficult things in those days, and he fought the system with great courage, somewhat like an Erin Brockovich. He is anything but a wimp. He was (is) one of the greatest family men I've ever met. His life was consumed with building tree houses, skate parks, ice rinks and basketball courts for his kids. He stayed in some difficult job situations because his family loved the UP of Michigan, (which is not a PA-friendly area) and he wanted to stay here for them.
I wish everyone could read this very funny and moving story. I wish every reader could have known the real Mike like I did. I am looking forward to seeing the movie!

Book Description
In the Japanese labor movement of the early twentieth century, no one captured the public imagination as vividly as Osugi Sakae (1885-1923): rebel, anarchist, and martyr. Flamboyant in life, dramatic in death, Osugi came to be seen as a romantic hero fighting the oppressiveness of family and society.
Osugi helped to create this public persona when he published his autobiography (Jijoden) in 1921-22. Now available in English for the first time, this work offers a rare glimpse into a Japanese boy's life at the time of the Sino-Japanese (1894-95) and the Russo-Japanese (1904-5) wars. It reveals the innocent--and not-so-innocent--escapades of children in a provincial garrison town and the brutalizing effects of discipline in military preparatory schools. Subsequent chapters follow Osugi to Tokyo, where he discovers the excitement of radical thought and politics.
Byron Marshall rounds out this picture of the early Osugi with a translation of his Prison Memoirs (Gokuchuki), originally published in 1919. This essay, one of the world's great pieces of prison writing, describes in precise detail the daily lives of Japanese prisoners, especially those incarcerated for political crimes.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book/Great Kit.......2005-07-25
This is a really great book and kit to help you prepare for the PMP exam (which I am doing right now). It is easy to read, gives many real life examples and provides lots of sample questions.
Its strength is that you LEARN the material - not learn how to memorize the material. The only pitfall I would say that this has is that it doesn't cover all the inputs, tools and techniques and outputs. Yes, the material specifically states that this is not the book to use if you want to memorize those. However, it does cover most of them - but not to a point where you could accurately recite them all. The CD allows you to take the book with you on your computer - so you don't have to lug it around. The additional exam questions are very helpful too.
ALL in ALL this one is Great!

Product Description
An update to the popular best seller, Insights to Performance Excellence 2005 thoroughly explains the Baldrige Award Criteria for 2005. Author Mark Blazey has simplified the criteria through the use of linkage diagrams and flow charts for each of the items that comprise the criteria. The categories are aligned to reflect a new way of looking at the components of a high performance management system. Blazey also clearly details the differences between the 2004 and 2005 criteria. As always, what separates this book from others on the market is the author's simplification of the 2005 Baldrige Criteria and the application process. Through the use of flowcharts, relationship matrixes, and examples of effective practices to help assess and document continuous improvement efforts, the book will strengthen your understanding of the Baldrige Criteria and provide valuable insights when analyzing your organization, achieving higher levels of performance, and applying for t! he Baldrige Award. Benefits: Also includes a bonus CD-ROM with templates to assist in applying for the award.

Permformance mythology.......2006-03-12
In almost all cases, "quality managers" tend to be lousy managers themselves. If they had the innate qualities to be effective managers, they would quickly recognize "quality management" schemes as gimmicks that get in the way of serious management.
In his foreword to Dr. Mark Blazey's Insights to Performance Excellence 2005, retired Xerox Vice President of Quality, John Lawrence acknowledges Blazey's assistance stating, "Dr. Mark Blazey...provided extremely valuable insight...to help us at Xerox develop world-class management systems that led to Xerox Business Services being recognized as a 1997 recipient of the Baldrige award."
One would expect, of course, to find a corresponding trend in Xerox's financial performance. Using Xerox's stock performance as a measure of financial success, one finds that Xerox stock rose from approximately $20 in 1996 to approximately $60 by 1998. This tripling of stock value would seem to validate Xerox's Baldrige effort. However, if one traces the trend backward one finds that the trend began in 1991 and moved upward with remarkable continuity to the middle of 1999. Assuming that Xerox's Baldrige efforts began in early 1995, and that the "process improvements" derived from Baldrige were fully implemented by the end of 1997, one would expect to see a steeper rise in stock performance somewhere after 1996. There is, in fact, nothing in the stock value trend that validates Xerox's commitment to Baldrige. In fact, from mid 1999 to the end of 2000, Xerox stock tumbled from over $60 to roughly $5 a share. Noting that the copy/printer industry kept zooming along during that period, whatever the cause of Xerox's downturn, it is obvious that the magic of Baldrige didn't work for Xerox. The fact is that Xerox's Leadership made bad business decisions and failed to recognize where the market was going. The precise point is that management "systems" like Baldrige are not magical formulas for producing good fundamental "strategic" business decisions.
Equally surprising, considering Baldrige's emphasis on "governance", is that Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) gave Xerox a low rating in 1999, predicting that Xerox was headed for disaster. ISS is one of several organizations that rate the performance of corporate boards and CEOs. That Xerox's "governance" problems were that evident a little over a year after Xerox won the Baldrige award ought to be astounding to Baldrige believers. Moreover, that, in 2005, Baldrige guru Mark Blazey uses Xerox to market his Baldrige book tells us that Blazey, after all, wants to sell us something.
Another apparently significant example cited in Lawrence's foreword, in the category of customer service, describes a scenario at Ritz-Carlton where the child of a hotel guest left a teddy bear on the floor by the bed. Lawrence relates that, "Upon return, the child found the teddy bear sitting at a small table with the Ritz Lion having tea." It's a nice story. It just isn't relevant to 99% of the hotel industry. In fact, it really isn't much more than one would expect in an exclusive and very expensive hotel, and it is, after all, the sort of thing that happens within a very narrow range of employee discretion. Nor is there anything in Baldrige that would have generated such a cute customer service idea. So how does the example validate Baldrige? It doesn't. It's just a cute story woven into a sales pitch for Blazey's book.
There's nothing wrong with the basic principles of Baldrige. In fact, if you're an effective manager, you probably apply them intuitively. The problem with the Baldrige "system", aside from its ineffectiveness, is that it is essentially incomprehensible and expensive to deploy. As an indication of its bewildering complexity, Blazey phone-book-sized tomb provides an 11 page glossary and an additional 2 ½ pages "Clarifying Confusing Terms". The "quality champions" like Blazey who push Baldrige (and similar systems) will inevitably tell you, "It's a great system, if you can get people to understand it and apply it." It is, in the final analysis, the comprehensibility of Baldrige that makes it seem so magical and keeps wizards like Blazey in business.

Book Description
Training is the catalyst for change in how people do things. Evaluating the training is the means by which change is activated. Evaluation is often neglected or done piecemeal. Evaluating Training will bring a fresh perspective to what you already do to evaluate training and help make evaluation easier so that it is not neglected.
The more you train and the more you evaluate training, the more likely you are to create an environment where learning is a natural part of the daily routine. Evaluating Training offers practical, yet creative ways to measure results and the impact of training. It will help you take stock of all the stages in your training and, by using the instruments, activate the changes you want your training to achieve.
Evaluating training is more than just a good idea; it is a vital part of the training process. Planning for evaluation while in the early stages of program development will provide stimulation and focus for you and ensure that the program will accomplish what you want it to.
