The vast majority of Keynesian probabilities are intervals.......2005-06-26

This book contains a collection of essays that explain what Post Keynesian economics is(for instance,a heavy emphasis on fundamental uncertainty[Keynes defined this type of uncertainty to be ignorance in his A Treatise on Probability(TP,1921),p.315,and p.315,ft.2.The weight of the evidence,w,would equal 0.],expectations,and the importance of historical time as opposed to purely logical/mathematical treatments of time)and how it is applied to such areas as pricing theory, economic growth,money,inflation,the labor market,government institutions and debt finance.All of the essays are badly marred because they,implicitly or explicitly(Dow,p.14;Wray,p.82),accept an error filled assessment of Keynes's logical theory of probability and decision theory made by J.Barkley Rosser Jr.in essay number 6 that supposedly deals with Keynes's analysis of uncertainty and expectations.Rosser apparently believes that p.33 of the TP alone contains Keynes's entire approach to the measurability of probability.The same identical error was made by F Ramsey in two error filled reviews of Keynes's TP in 1922 and 1926.Rosser claims that"...where Keynes(1921,33)distinguishes four cases:there are no probabilities at all...;there may be some partial ordering of probable events but no cardinal numbers can be placed on them;there may be numbers but they can not be discovered for some reason;and there may be numbers but they are difficult to discover"(Rosser,p.54;many other similar errors are committed on pp.55-61).Keynes made it very clear on p.37 that his final word on measurement was contained in Part II(chapters 15 and 17)of the TP.On pp.160-163 and pp.186-194 of the TP,Keynes makes it very clear that most probabilities can be specified by interval estimates.However,per his discussion in chapter III,in many cases such interval estimates will overlap to some degree and hence cause problems of nonrankability,nonmeasurability,noncomparability and incommensurability.The only purpose for purchasing this book would be in order to compare the numerous incorrect statements about probability made in this book with the actual analysis provided by Keynes in the TP.The TP contains the first systematic exposition of an interval estimate approach to probability in the history of probability and decision theory.Nowhere in this book or in any other book published by Post Keynesians has the basic interval estimate nature of Keynesian probabilities been acknowledged.

Excellent primer for NMR.......2006-11-18

I'm a complete novice to NMR and this text provides a great introduction to the field with a focus on biological molecules. I've also read parts of Protein NMR Spectroscopy by John Cavanagh and I think Rule's book sets up the stage nicely for the reader to explore further by reading more detailed texts (Cavanagh) on particulars of the field. It's a relatively slim volume and not as intimidating in the mathematical modelling as some of the other books. If you need to understand an NMR phenomenon, read about it in this book first and it'll save you some time in developing an overall picture before looking at pages and pages of derivations in a dusty old book. I have Dr. Rule in part of my classes, I'm a first year grad student, and his amazing teaching ability in the classroom is reflected in the book. Highly recommended to those new to NMR along with Cavanagh's text. I wouldn't leave home without them.

Consider CDnow, which has developed a multifaceted customer-acquisition strategy that reflects a clear understanding of the economics of an on-line business. At the heart of its strategy is affiliate marketing, a concept the company pioneered. Under its BuyWeb program, anyone can put a link to CDnow on his or her Web site, and if a customer uses that link to arrive at CDnow and make a purchase, the referring site owner gets a percentage of the sale. CDnow pays no money if no sale is made, which makes the marketing program completely efficient. But CDnow didn't stop there. Being a Web store, it had complete data on the number of visitors to its site and what they bought, which it used to work out the lifetime value of an average customer. CDnow used that figure to determine how much to wager on the expensive and risky world of traditional advertising to reach a wider audience that wasn't already on-line. CDnow's experience, still a work in progress, contradicts John Wanamaker's oft-quoted lament: "I know half the money I spend on advertising is wasted, but I can never find out which half." As the CDnow example demonstrates, there is a way to find out which half really works.

"Never Use Your Dim Lights" Shines on Political LIfe.......2004-05-28

This is a factual autobiographic record of a former Pennsylvania state legislator and School Board member. While the names in the book have been changed, the events are real, according to the author. The book, written in diary form, follows Peg George from her first local political meetings in 1967. She discovered she enjoyed running for office, even as a sacrificial Democratic candidate in an area vastly outnumbered by Republicans. She won election to the School Board by campaigning door to door. The machinations of School Board politics, from budgeting squabbles to visiting schools and attending obligatory football games are described along with her reactions.

The positive reactions she received caused her to run for the State Senate, thinking she was being encouraged to seek office from friends and local political leaders. To her surprise, political leaders backed a candidate with more money and some friends crossed her. She discovered that politics can mean betrayal from people whose jobs are threatened and that support can be influenced by those who control patronage.

Peg George recovered in 1976 to suggestions she run for the State House. Winning in the aftermath of Watergate, she found her political courage tested soon after taking office when she supported an unsuccessful motion requesting the House Speaker to resign. She was relieved when the local press praised her political independence.

Her book describes other legislative lessons: committee meetings where votes occur on bills few know about without discussion, offers from leadership to change her vote in return for funding within her district, how legislative leaders vote for her without her knowledge in her absence, how some legislators will steal other's ideas and introduce them as their own legislation, and of paper clip fights on the House floor. She is also one of the few politicians to admit that campaign contributors can affect how one feels about contributors.

The diary form of this book allows readers to gain insights to how the author reacts to the events she describes. For instance, we learn during her service in the legislature that "this place does something to you and you begin to like what it does...the feeling that I am part of important decisions". At the end of her political career, we discover that she writes how "I like myself better now. I seem to be a nicer person." Yet, as the book admits, she "wouldn't have missed it for the world."

A disappointing read...........1999-11-04

It is not often that I am so disappointed by a book purchase. Had I actually been able to thumb through it, I most certainly would not have bought it.

This is a book of big print and small ideas. White space and empty pages pad the number of pages from less than 100 to nearly 300. Of these, 10 pages are given over to glossy photos of Party leaders accompanied by vacuous comments.

Indeed, the entire book reminds me of the sort of barren tracts published by China's official printers. It is full of anecdotes and homilies that are poor substitutes for their lack of analysis.

There is a sense that the authors know that there are problems with the Chinese economy. But they offer no sensible analytical framework to understand them or to resolve them.

While dancing around the issue of China's state-owned enterprises, they never seem to understand that most cannot be mended, they must be ended. If not, continued expenditures on them will destroy yet more of the hard-earned savings of China's citizens and destroy opportunities to create new wealth.

Their lack of candor could be put down to ignorance or knowledge that the Chinese government does not appreciate strong criticism. However, the bios on the authors suggests that they may suffer from a conflict of interest. They are consultants on restructuring of these state-owned enterprises.

Even the production of the book disappoints. My copy had pages that were uncut and others were printed unevenly. There is no bibliography. A more grievous sin is the lack of an index, itself a simple matter with any word processing package. But with a book that offers so little substance, I suppose these are of no great concern.
