Book Description
This book addresses the issues of lagging development in some European regions which are disadvantaged due to their isolated location. The persisting problems of social and economic development in several European Union areas (i.e. islands, mountains, border areas etc.) has turned the attention of policy makers to the critical importance of transport and telecommunication linkages. The effectiveness of such plans and programmes, the evaluation of direct and indirect beneficial and sometimes unintended impacts of incentives are discussed. Several new analytical tools and concepts are introduced and discussed.
Book Description
Edward Hayes is that unusual combination: the likable lawyer, one who could have stepped off the stages of Guys and Dolls or Chicago. Mouthpiece is his story—an irreverent, entertaining, and revealing look at the practice of law in modern times and a social and political anatomy of New York City. It recounts Hayes’s childhood in the tough Irish sections of Queens and his eventual escape to the University of Virginia and then to Columbia Law School. Not at all white-shoe-firm material, Hayes headed to the hair-raising, crime-ridden South Bronx of the midseventies—first as a homicide prosecutor and then as a defense attorney seeking to free the same sort of people he formerly had put in jail.
Tom Wolfe immortalized this setting in The Bonfire of the Vanities. Ed Hayes was his guide, and he served as the model for the scrappy defense lawyer Tommy Killian. Eventually, Hayes moved his practice to Manhattan, using his neighborhood white boy instincts and connections and the rough-and-tumble techniques learned in the Bronx on behalf of the rich and powerful and famous. From a high-stakes legal shootout over the Andy Warhol estate to working to secure financial justice for the families of the World Trade Center victims, Hayes has been behind the scenes of how New York City really operates.
For the tens of millions fascinated by New York’s unique blend of glitter and grime, of idealism and corruption, of avarice and ambition, Mouthpiece provides the ultimate close-up of high-stakes Gotham gamesmanship.
“In the pages before us, the Counselor tells a saga’s worth of tales of the city. As the saying goes, he’s got a million of them.” —Tom Wolfe, from his Introduction
Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly compelling........2006-12-06
Excellent book. Portrays both the personal and professional life of Ed Hayes in two parallel tracks which help the reader understand what motivates this very successful attorney to will victories in his cases.
The book goes into equal and elaborate detail describing both Hayes' difficult childhood and his legal career which began as a prosecutor in the South Bronx and eventually morphed into his current prolific, high profile, and legally diverse practice. Hayes provides a glimpse into the inner workings of his cases from an "out of the box" perspective i.e. the ways in which politics and the media can often decisively impact the outcome of a case.
"Mouthpiece" is a compelling, entertaining, and well written book.
This is an amazing book and an amazing life.......2006-12-04
I can't put this thing down. If you want to feel strong and like life is truly exciting, invigorating, and anything is possible, read this account. This amazing story of the rise and life of a popular celebrity lawyer is awe inspiring: I found myself truly impressed both with the the sheer tenacity and the deeply ethical fiber of Ed Hayes--perhaps surprising given the impression one might get when casually glimpsing at the list of some of his more infamous clientele.
As a New Yorker who grew up in Manhattan, the setting and backdrop of these often gritty tales rings true, to the last detail. I could actually smell the city in the 70's and 80's when I read parts of this book. Hayes' power of observation is uncanny. I wanted to be transported back to the city I remembered..
Overriding all, beyond the sense of admiration that grows greater with each page, is the fast pace and understated humor evident in the telling of each of these (true) tales.
Easy to Relate to (for me).......2006-08-18
As a son of Irish immigrants who grew up in Sunnyside, Queens and made something more of myself, I can appreciate all the struggles, as well as all the characters Ed Hayes brings up in his book. It brings back a lot of good memories and makes me miss some of the action and strong hustiling personality types that my adopted hometown of Seattle is sore lacking.
I could not stop reading it.
BRILLIANT LAWYER STORY.......2006-07-18
Ed Hayes exposes himself and one might think that the machine gun style of the book is fantasy but it doesn't do justice to the man himself. His dedication to his clients is legendary and he spends every working moment thinking and working for them. Having shared some of his adventures but as a cop,I found that he loves cops. If it wasn't for the fact that he would not have been able to support his interesting lifestyle he would have been one.
His book covers his life and gives a glimpse into the man and his style. He doesn't know how to go at half speed and neither does the book. His upfront approach is evident. He just doesn't have time for B.S.
It's a quick read and an enjoyable one. Make sure that you take it with you on vacation! It will make it more enjoyable.
Gripping tale of the City.......2006-07-04
Leave it to Ed Hayes to make a probate dispute unfold like a murder mystery. But he does that, and much more.
This is the story of a fascinating life, well told. And told warts and all. I was slightly shocked to read in Tom Wolfe's preface that this book contained things that Ed had never told his friend of some 20 years. But after reading the book, I can understand it. Mouthpiece is brutally honest in a way that most people don't even wish to be with themselves, much less the world at large.
This is also a great account of growing up and thriving in New York City. The literature on the city is vast, much of it informative, but a great deal too sentimental to be true or useful. Mouthpiece captures the city as it is -- from the working class neighborhoods in Queens to the tony precincts of the Upper East side; from the harsh world of the Lower Manhattan and South Bronx jails and courthouses to the wood-paneled halls of the great Midtown law firms. New York is an engine whose fuel is ambition. Mouthpiece -- and the life it recounts -- brings that all to life in a way that few books, or few authors, could. If you want to understand how New York really works, Mouthpiece is almost an instruction manual. A very, very entertaining and riveting instruction manual.

Insightful Advice From Someone That Has Done It.......2006-12-28
I read this book when starting my business four years ago and have found myself thinking of it often since then. The experiences I have had growing my company matched what Mr. Sutton talks about and his advice has worked for me so far. A quick read that I highly recommend.
The REALITY of being an entrepeneur.......2001-08-17
Walt Sutton brings a real world perspective and down to earth practical advise to the reader. Many business books seem to try to make starting a business sound so easy. He makes it clear it is one of the most difficult things a human being can attempt. I wish every government offical would read it before they vote to regulate businesses even more. The most valuable advice that stuck with me was his pitch to stay debt free, or as debt free as possible in running a business. If you are a business owner or contemplating starting one, do not start without first reading this book, and then every six months thereafter.
This book told the truth about life as an entrepreneur.......2000-08-05
Mr. Sutton's book rang so true for me. The three parts: experience, critical tasks, and valuable tools all gave tremendous insights into starting and maintaining a successful business from the CEOs personal perspective. This is one of the few books that I have ever seen that told the "secrets" of the thinking of successful entrepreneurs. I used all the tools such as conducting yearly strategic planing, assessing the core team, having a disaster plan, and many others. I know I will read it more than once.
Leap of Strength.......2000-05-17
Walt Sutton captures the essence of the entrepreneur CEO.If you are one, you will enjoy finding yourself in these pages. If you want to be one, read this book and then read it again and again....

Book Description
The increasing globalization of economic activity is bringing an awareness of the international consequences of tax policy. The move toward the common European market in 1992 raises the important question of how inefficiencies in the various tax systems—such as self-defeating tax competition among member nations—will be addressed. As barriers to trade and investment tumble, cross-national differences in tax structures may loom larger and create incentives for relocations of capital and labor; and efficient and equitable income tax systems are becoming more difficult to administer and enforce, particularly because of the growing importance of multinational enterprises. What will be the role of tax policy in this more integrated world economy?
Assaf Razin and Joel Slemrod gathered experts from two traditionally distinct specialties, taxation and international economics, to lay the groundwork for understanding these issues, which will require the attention of scholars and policymakers for years to come.
Contributors describe the basic provisions of the U.S. tax code with respect to international transactions, highlighting the changes contained in the U.S. Tax Reform Act of 1986; explore the ways that tax systems influence the decisions of multinationals; examine the effect of taxation on trade patterns and capital flows; and discuss the implications of the opening world economy for the design of optimal international tax policy. The papers will prove valuable not only to scholars and students, but to government economists and international tax lawyers as well.
Book Description
The Berlin Wall collapses ushering in an entirely new Era with unfamiliar rules and a wide open political and economic architecture that is increasingly defined by the shock of rapid technological change throughout the 1990s. From the newly negotiated Free Trade Agreements and Emerging Markets opening to private investment, to a rapidly changing balance of power in banking favouring investment in new ideas in internet and high tech- the 1990s has become a revolutionary decade not only defining business, financial and economic relations, but affecting social and broader national interests.

Book Description
This extremely interesting study on learning organizations seeks to provide a critical insight into what really goes on in so-called perfect work environments. The rich, qualitative data collected during the course of the author's research in several Indian organizations supports her view that, in fact, members of learning organizations coerce, manipulate, and bargain with each other to achieve their personal and organizational goals.
Written in a simple, narrative style, the book generates a new perspective on work environments and the type of relationship that may exist between employers and employees in learning organizations.

The revised second edition of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting Your Own Business, by author and entrepreneur Ed Paulson and marketing consultant Marcia Layton, is an extensive handbook of small-business basics for those who already have the desire and drive mandatory for launching an individual commercial enterprise--but it does not include all of the specific day-to-day skills that significantly increase its chances for survival. The book begins with plainspoken advice on matters such as choosing a business, setting goals, and initiating the plan that makes it all happen. This is followed by material on sales and marketing and developing business structures, which is bolstered at appropriate intervals with useful definitions, additional resources, and warnings about potential pitfalls. The next two sections on finances and growth, however, may ultimately prove most valuable. The best information here includes sections about evaluating competition and defending against potential incursions; why business bankers reject loan applications and how to make them your allies; and why production plans are critical. This book also looks at the "secrets of success," suggesting ways to cope with the ups and downs that any entrepreneur will inevitably encounter. --Howard Rothman

Customer Reviews:
Introducing Business to New Entrepreneurs.......2005-05-12
When most entrepreneurs first get the yen to start a business, they realize that there must be a lot that they don't know. The legal, accounting and tax choices often seem particularly daunting . . . and there's often no money to retain an attorney.
Not knowing where to turn, many take local adult education classes (like the kind I teach). In those classes, these strivers often find out that what they didn't know that they didn't know is even more dangerous than what that they do know that they don't know.
The fourth edition of Starting Your Own Business is a good resource for such new entrepreneurs.
You will learn many of the fundamentals of picking a business to start, preparing a business plan, selecting a legal structure, organizing for success and operating the business once you start it.
Based on my experiences with new entrepreneurs, this book will answer about 80% of the questions that they usually have . . . and about 60% of the questions they should be asking.
One of the book's strengths is the CD-ROM that has sample forms and form letters for handling routine matters. While these won't substitute for having an attorney (I am one, so I know), they will allow you to work with an attorney in more effective and less expensive ways.
The areas where the book is weakest are as follows:
1. Doesn't spell out how the choice of business type affects your chances of success and the difficulty of raising money.
2. Doesn't do enough about the pros and cons of being a franchisee and how to pursue that opportunity.
3. Doesn't teach you how to create an advantaged business model and improve upon it.
4. Doesn't provide enough perspective on how to establish a management team.
One of the things I did like about the book is that it considers manufacturing businesses as well as service and professional service companies. Most resources about starting up businesses ignore the opportunity of manufacturing.
This book won't make or break your business, but it will speed your process of getting ready to launch if you don't have any background in this area.
Small Business Classic.......2004-08-24
Starting Your Own Business has been a top seller for many
years and for good reason: it's the classic handbook for
business owners. For the 4th edition, this book has been totally updated. If you have the 3rd edition, it is worth buying the new one just for the CD. An indispensable guide to those thinking about buying a business. Buy this book before you begin the process -- it is a must-have volume. If you are in business, keep this volume handy -- it addresses the most important challenges facing business owners today. Highest Recommendation.
How To Get Started in 24 Easy Chapters.......2004-07-26
I'm about halfway through this book and it's exactly what I was looking for. Over the years I've considered going out on my own but had no idea how to start. I needed an introductory guide to the setting up and running of a small business from the legal, financial & business side and that's exactly what this book does. It's a great overview of what any entrepreneur will face when they take the plunge. On top of that, it's not a bad read, for a non-fiction book.
Useful and easy to understand.......2004-07-14
I am using this book to help my friend's painting business get organized and focused. Bids and jobs take up much of his time, so this is a great tool to understand some of the "bigger" picture without having to take a bunch of business classes. The CD also has useful general forms.
Excellent Resource.......2004-07-14
This book was very easy to read and understand. If you are thinking of starting your own business and need to know how to go about doing it, this book is the only book you will need. The book comes complete with a CD containing forms and helpful resources and information.
Book Description
b /b b i Liberalization in the Developing World /i /b compares the success of liberalization strategies in Asia, Africa and Latin America over the past decade. Three models emerge, corresponding to the three continents covered, which reflect the degree of state intervention in the economy and the success of liberalization policies adopted. br br The conclusions drawn demonstrate that economic and political liberalization do not have to go hand in hand. On the contrary, the case studies presented illustrate that the role of the state can be crucial in mobilizing both the human and capital investment needed to be able to compete in the international economy.

Book Description
This book brings together two major developments of the past decade: the collapse of the Soviet Union on the political side and "globalization" on the economic side. It shows that both of these drastic changes resulted in an increasing demand for regulation and guidance by international organizations, which on their side feel an increasing pressure for adjustment to the changed international agenda.
