This is the best critical collection I've seen to date on the question of long boom and bust cycles. It allows side by side comparison of the major theories and breaks new ground in the case of a few schools of thought. The book also helps to place the fashionable debates on globalization, financial crisis, labor conditions, etc in a longer historical perspective. Writing is uneven but mostly fine....

Apart from introductory information it contains many interesting views, also from lawyers' own practice. These personal, short, "interviews" with real life persons make this book that interesting.

Despite the transformation in biological practice and theory brought about by discoveries in molecular biology, until recently philosophy of biology continued to focus on evolutionary biology. When the Human Genome Project got underway in the late 1980s and early 1990s, philosophers of biology -- unlike historians and social scientists -- had little to add to the debate. In this landmark collection of essays, Sahotra Sarkar broadens the scope of current discussions of the philosophy of biology, viewing molecular biology as a unifying perspective on life that complements that of evolutionary biology. His focus is on molecular biology, but the overriding question behind these papers is what molecular biology contributes to all traditional areas of biological research.

Molecular biology -- described with some foresight in a 1938 Rockefeller Foundation report as a branch of science in which "delicate modern techniques are being used to investigate ever more minute details" -- and its modeling strategies apparently argue in favor of physical reductionism. Sarkar's first three chapters explore reductionism -- defending it, but cautioning that reduction to molecular interactions is not necessarily a reduction to genetics (and does not support the claims of either heriditarianism or environmentalism). The next sections of the book discuss function, exploring how functional explanations pose a problem for reductionism; the informational interpretation of biology and how it interacts with reductionism; and the tension between the unifying framework of molecular biology and the received framework of evolutionary theory. The concluding chapter is an essay in the emerging field of developmental evolution, exploring what molecular biology may contribute to the transformation of evolutionary theory as evolutionary theory takes into account morphogenetic development.

I'm an open ocean paddler and thought I could handle an upcoming river trip without any fuss; but this book brings to light in an easy to read format the great need that even the most experienced of paddler has to properly prepare for the calmest of water journeys on the best of days. I'm very greatful for the river reading techniqes Bradshaw discribes and for the true stories of people who lost their lives because they weren't prepared. With so many people getting out on the water these days, books like this are essential and will save many lives.

As a high school student this was an essential book. It is a compilation of different alphabets and includes precise instruction on the construction of individual letters. It was the fundamental basis for my calligraphy classes. 5 years later, as a professional calligrapher I refer back from time to time to learn a new alphabet suited for the job at hand. It is amazing how much someone (amateur or professional) can learn from this book.

I must say, the alphabets are `standard' and do not include personal technique. It is imperative to learn the basic and standard structure of an alphabet before you add individual style (which this book allows); once you have mastered the fundamentals of that alphabet then you can add your personal touches. I have many other books which include calligraphic fonts but this is the most critical one I own. I bring this very book with me to a client to pick out an alphabet and it is the one I use to teach my students.
I cannot express in words how great it is!

this is one of the books i learned out of. it's packed with great info, and everything. sometimes its hard to find it in the calligraphic layout, and some of the alphabets lack important info like nib angle. but despite its faults it's still exceedingly useful.

Not worth buying. While some good directions, hints, etc., very difficult to read because the entire book was done by calligaphy. The different letter styles could be gotten in other books. Sorry.

One of my favorites..........2000-10-19

This attractive, information-packed book inspired me at a time when I was ready to drop calligraphy. It focuses on increasing the intermediate calligrapher's repertoire of alphabets, rather than on introductory material. The variety of beautifully lettered alphabets provide inspiration for many projects. I highly recommend it.
