I read this book when I was in HS. It is interesting to see how most of the threats didn't happen at all and many other thing improved.

Back in 1970, I would have given this five stars. In light of what happened since then, I give it one.

5 Star Subject, 3 Star Writing.......2003-11-04

Anyone who has visited the Outer Banks -- and many who have only seen them from the famous 1970-era Apollo space shot -- knows that the islands are unique, fragile, and someday going to be overrun, either by trashy tourism or, eventually, nature. Alexander and Lazell hope, but are hardly convinced, that nature will get the chance to run its long course. Beyond the fascinating subject, the authors' chapter by chapter analysis of the forces that compete on the Banks -- sand, wind, land, forest -- is a clarifying approach to writing about the science of the Banks. In separate chapters, Alexander and Lazell then effectively show how the forces combined to impact Blackbeard's last battle and the Wright Brothers efforts to fly. The final chapter, Convergences, is like reading a decade-early preview of the impact on the islands of Hurricane Isabel. I would call Alexander and Lazell prescient, but I suspect they themselves would be the first to admit they were simply documenting the inevitable future. Only problem with this excellent book is that the writing feels as if it was done either in turn or by compromise, and is often far less compelling than its subject matter. Still, Ribbon of Sand offers some science, some entertainment, and a whole lot of appreciation for this wonderful speck of the world.

Engrossing.......2002-04-06

I purchased this book to learn more about the Outer Banks, which I have long wished to visit and where we will spend a week this summer. It is an amazingly interesting and informative book. Geology, geography, biology, weather, ecology, politics, and more are all discussed as is the importance of each in relation to the others. I found the book engrossing and would recommend it even if you are not going to this unique area of the world. Now when the kids ask me why there is a forest in the dunes I will be able to tell them and I will be much better able to appreciate the beauty of the place.

Man and Nature on a Tiny Strip of Land.......2001-07-24

I picked this book up during a recent week's stay on Topsail Island (one of the southernmost of the Outer Banks). Having never read a book on natural history or the ecology, I was prepared for the paper-pulp equivalent of Sominex.

Never have I been more wrong in my preconceptions about a book. Ribbon of Sand captures PERFECTLY the true mystique of North Carolina's Outer Banks -- how a half-mile wide band of barrier islands survive both because of nature . . . and in spite of it. Each segment of the book ties together both human and natural history. How the wind the shapes the wonderfully high dunes near Kill Devil provided the Wright Brothers with the means to test their gliders and to develop the first airplane. How shifting tides and currents that continue to shape the Outer Banks both abetted . . . and spelled doom for Blackbeard the Pirate.

In short, Ribbon of Sand captured my imagination and instilled in me a greater appreciation for the fragile balance of nature and man on the Outer Banks. I very highly reccomend this book!

Definitely not enough coverage of the Caribbean and Atlantic sites. This book should be named the Pacific and Indian Ocean Dive Atlas. It is a quality written book however that covers the included sites thoroughly. Would recommend it but not for Caribbean reference!

Comprehensive Dive Atlas.......2005-08-17

This is a really big coffee table size book that is stocked with information about dive sites throughout the world, Some parts of the world (Asia) are given more space than others (Carribbean), but overall, it touches all the bases. I like the way it took individual divesites and broke down the dives with temps, currents, difficultly status, and photos. The maps of the areas profiled is worth the price of the book alone (which is reasonably priced.) If you get one book to get an overview of what's out there, this is agood place to start.

Not good for beginners.......2006-05-31

This CD is not beneficial for beginners. The portuguese is spoken too fast to comprehend correct pronunciation. It would have been much better if the phrases were spoken slower for the student to learn how to say it correctly and then at the normal speed. I gave the CD 3 stars because it came with a lonely planet travel dictionary that I do find beneficial.

I really liked this book. It was very good. Bridget is kind of stupid, though. Trying to hide her little sercet flame for Will from her friends. They'll figure it out eventually, I'm sure. But I'm not really sure what I would do in her shoes either.

I actually enjoyed this book. I can relate to Bridget and the story is very real. Although, the College Life books are for teens, I am 20 and I very much enjoyed it. The College Life books are my favorite series and i cannot wait for another one to come out

This book is undoubtedly the most comprehensive book on polymer extrusion, covering mechanical structure, instrumentation, theory, process analysis, design, modeling & computer simulation, and more.
It is strongly recommendable to researchers and engineers who are interested in polymer extrusion.
It might be arguable that the volume is too much as the coverage is too wide, and the depth of descriptions seems to fluctuate a bit.
To be precise, my rating is 4 and a half stars.

This is a work of literature I have long awaited. I do a lot of reading, but I cannot interest my husband in the books I read. I left Return To Paradise on a table next to my husband's chair in the family room. When he picked it up and started to look through it, he became quite enthused. The story appeals to a man, but the underlying message is about treating a woman special. Our relationship is now better than ever! Thank you very much Bruce Bream.

Lots of Fun.......2003-05-27

This is a really amusing book. I didn't get to the really funny part until the I was about a third of the way through my second read. My enlightment by self-discovery was the best part of Return to Paradise. Bruce Bream is a very interesting writer. Bruce reminded me a little of Kilgore Trout and Trout Fishing in America with a little Jubal Hershaw throw in for good measure. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to think a little, and laugh a little more...

If you are looking for the stories of our fathers who went off to fight our wars, as likely as not you will be disappointed. The editor took viable material and turned it into an opportunity to take small jabs at historical American racism and regionalism, while portraying many of the young soldiers as dysfunctional upon return to the States.

While some of the stories are interesting, the typos and editorial politics are distracting. If you are still looking for a copy, you might catch the garbage man as he takes mine to the landfill.

La primera oportunidad que tuve de leer este libro fue a los 8 anos y no solo me gusto muchisimo sino que me ayudo luego en la epoca de estudiante,14 anos depues aun me sigue atrapando cabe recalcar que de los datos recopilados entonces hasta la fecha han habido avances considerables en la ciencia,mas empero eso no le quita a Paul de Kruif el merito de entretener narrando prodigiosamente temas tan complejos como la historia de la Microbiologia.Para quienes consideran que la ciencia es aburrida les recomiendo esta obra tambien sugerible para aquellos que gustan de ciencia ficcion.
