Don't get me started on this boring topic!!!!.......2002-03-31

A) Why is there a whole law class on cashing checks? B) Why is the subject so convoluted and obnoxious??? This Gilberts was useful in that it gave diagrams and drawings to illustrate points. The first two chapters were helpful and (somewhat) easy to understand. The later chapters on bank deposits and electronic banking give light to the future of this subject (and future bar exam questions). However, the longest chapter, "Liability of the Parties" was the most confusing. It should have had more diagrams and would have been better as two chapters. But this Gilbert's help me understand this nefarious topic more than any other legal aid.

Saved me on the exam.......2006-05-05

These tapes saved me in my Payments class, and they were basically all I needed to know to do well on the exam. Whaley also has a good sense of humor. The black letter law is still current on these tapes as of 2006 as far as I can tell.

Too few tapes for such a long subject.......2002-05-23

The professor giving this lecture freely admits that if you don't study CP in a law class or for the bar, you will never get it in practice. Still, this tape series has only 3 tapes when your typical sum & substance subject has between 4 and 6. The professor crams cp rules into 3 tapes sides and article 4 payment rules in the last 3 sides. These tapes didn't become useful until I had read and made flash cards from his Gilberts law summary text. I can't believe the most difficult bar subject has so few study aids out there. This is very frustrating. I can't even say Whaley did a bad job here; it's just that these tapes alone won't do it.

There has been intense debate in the UK over the European single currency, but the ratio of light to heat has been disappointingly low. Discussion has centered on whether or not the UK should join monetary union; barely any attention has been paid to the crucial issues of how economic policy must change if the UK is to participate, or how policy must adapt if the UK stays outside. And there has been little analysis of how the date of entry would be affected by the time it takes for policy changes to be implemented and take effect.

This report of an independent panel, chaired by Rupert Pennant-Rea, considers the policy implications for the UK of different strategies on membership: aiming to join in the first wave; aiming to join later; waiting to see how EMU works out; or deciding, in principle, not to join.

The report analyzes the conduct of monetary policy, the implications for fiscal policy, how the institutions need to adapt, how the tax system should evolve, whether and how the transmission mechanism of monetary policy could be altered, the implications of EMU for financial supervision, the role of lender of last resort, debt management, implications for the labor market, and international economic relations.

This is the first thorough assessment of the implications rather than the desirability of EMU. By setting out a framework for analysis, it contributes a fresh angle to the public debate and the formation of policy. It will be of great interest to policymakers, practitioners, and academics.

The title of this book is impressive, and I thought it was a book about transaction cost analysis for financial assets, such as stocks, bonds, options, etc. But no, this is some kind of "general, abstract" (and IMHO useless) treatment of some kind of "general, abstract" concept of transaction cost. In fact, there's no financial application in this book at all.

Worldwide Exposure.......2007-09-14

Many Americans are aware of our Freedom of Information Act, but the politics and logistics behind government transparency and citizen access to information are very complicated. In this mostly fascinating book, Roberts tackles the intricacies of this little-understood matter, and gains many unique and practical insights into what "freedom of information" really brings. Amidst comparative coverage of information disclosure statutes and politics in countries around the world (dozens of nations have been inspired by our FOIA), Roberts looks into the tendency of governments towards secrecy, the trend among world populations to demand access to information, and the unexpected burdens that disclosure laws can impose on both politicians and activists. Roberts delves into some surprising areas like government manipulation of the disclosure process to indirectly maintain secrecy, the bureaucratic burdens of disclosure rules amongst different types of governmental bodies, the over-collected nature of government information in the digital age, the lack of transparency amongst private contractors that are now performing governmental functions (such as the operation of prisons), and the trend amongst supra-national bodies (like the World Bank and IMF) to demand American-style disclosure rules in developing nations while refusing to follow such practices themselves.

This book is held back from true greatness a bit, because Roberts tries a little too hard to see all sides of the story, and while he is generally in favor of government transparency, his "fair and balanced" regard for certain types of government secrecy prevent the book from reaching a forceful and authoritative conclusion. Another problem is that Roberts misses the opportunity to expand his coverage of the international scene into a worldwide theory of information disclosure, as his coverage of information laws in other countries keeps coming back to conclusions about American political trends. But aside from those structural issues, Roberts certainly illustrates, with great insight, that freedom of information is vastly more complex than most people would realize.
