I am using this book in my course on sociology of work with great success. The students really like the case studies and can relate to the work sites covered in this volume. Unlike most labor process research which focuses on factory labor-- this book looks at service and retail sites-- taking gender and race into consideration. Great for classes on work or globalization.

With the increased interest in viruses in the popular culture, this book should be at the top of anyone's virus reading list. It is a wonderful introduction to the history of virus research and provides useful information about viruses themselves. Even if you took biology or genetics courses in school, this book is a handy reminder of how viruses work. I recommend this to anyone interested in emerging diseases.

As a 36-year old, I am a grown up. But now and then I long for the days that I was 8 years old and could be absolutely mesmerized by a book.I read a book about archeology and, although it was not very well-written, for years I wanted to cross deserts and jungles in search of treasures. This feeling of discovery of something new, something a bit eerie but exciting was back when I read this terrific book about the battle against viruses.It is highly informative but still makes you long for being a man in a laboratory yourself. Radetsky should also try to write fiction. He will be goood at it !

Intriguing reading for any age level interested in virology........1997-09-28

Viruses, until the introduction of AIDS in the late '80's have mostly been taken for granted by the Generation X'ers. Who would have guessed the scientist responsible for vaccines such as Polio, Smallpox, Rabies and Herpes along with several others, all lived extremely close to our lifetime and several of them are still alive today. These scientists, and their fight with society, has been a struggle anyone could appreciate. The intelligence and the luck of these men are truly amazing. This book is an excellent reference for anyone who is curious as to how a virus works and overcomes the cells in one's body. I would recommend this book to anyone.

The Story of the Emerging Age of Viruses.......1997-04-14

When we hear talk about viruses "emerging", we have to step back and realize that these viruses are mostly emerging in our own consciousness of them. Smallpox was around for centuries, before we developed the technology to "see" the virus with a high-powered microscope. This book chronicles the history of mankind's "discovery" of the world of viruses, from the time Edward Jenner developed the smallpox vaccine till the present. The drama unfolds as we get to know the scientists responsible for the discoveries, and their efforts to produce successful vaccines against some of the plagues of the day: Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Smallpox, Rabies, Polio, the Common Cold, AIDS, Epstein-Barr, Influenza, Hepatitis, Herpes, and Cancer are the featured performers here. One of the most interesting things I learned was how a person who gets hepatitis, is at an increased risk for developing other liver problems, like cirrhosis and liver cancer. The recent death of Allen Ginsberg is a poignant demonstration of this. Equally intreguing are the connections between Epstein-Barr, CFS, Burkitt's lymphoma, mononucleosis, and nasopharyngeal carcinoma; according to researchers: "the Epstein-Barr virus is the foremost candidate for being the first known human cancer virus." It is a fascinating and educational story.

Time flies, so as advancement of IT. Naturally this 2001 German book published in English in 2003 seems a little bit obsolete today. However, I must praise the authors for their accurate and realistic forecast of their future world instead of painting a sci-fi movie picture. Moreover, the abundannce (33) of figures/graphs do add points to it. Nevertheless, I must complain that the book title "marketing 2.0" is gimmicky and something addressing eCRM/loyalty is definitely a much more suitable. In short, simply a so so CRM/marketing book. It wont be a loss if you give it a pass.

Riddled with errors that will get you lost! .......2004-09-04

Admittedly, I am basing this review on the section about Northfield, where I have lived for many years. But if this section is any indication, this book was not fact-checked in any way, nor did they use anything so basic as a map to check directions. For instance: "Turning east off the interstate onto State 19, you have only about a 30 minute drive to Northfield." Last time I checked, it was 7 miles, less than 10 minutes. "The city's other highly respected university, Carlton College..." Hello, it's a _College_, not a university, there are _no_ universities in town, and it's spelled Carleton. "A sign greets motorists: Northfield, a special space." Try _Place_. "Head north out of town on Division Street (State 3)" - if you do head out of town on Division, it becomes State 19. "Northfield was founded in 1855...by John North and blacksmith/farmer I. S. Field." There's no mention of this Mr. Field in any of my books about Northfield history - did the author make this up? The author complains that "revisionist history [is] the rage these days," but I'm afraid he's unintentionally contributing to the revision. There are a fair number of other errors and wierd interpretations of reality in this section, but I think I've made my point.

I think the idea of the book is great - traveling through on the smaller roads, getting to know a state in a way other than just hitting the major cities, which are only a small part of what makes up this state. Unfortunately, the casualness with which dubious "facts" and directions are tossed around keep this book from being useful to most people.

I loved this book even though the whole series is a little TRASHY. Are they going to continue the series. I mean the ending of this one kind of left me hanging. What happens to Lisha? Will Lisha and Sky get together and stay together? What happens to Karma and D.? What about Alan? I am dying to know! Write some more Bennett!

Dell Dechant suggests that the holiday is a construction of twentieth century consumer culture. "The Sacred Santa" argues that the new religion of America is consumerism and that it is most effectively practiced in the holiday season at the end of each year. He believes that American society has raised the practice of consumerism to a religious ritual.

At a fundamental level Dechant challenges the dominant narrative in American religious studies, that modern society is becoming less overtly religious and more secular in orientation. The movement of Christmas from its status as a holy day to a commercial experience might seem to confirm that narrative, but Delchant quickly turns this idea on its head. No question, he believes, mainstream religion is less central to the lives of most of the population, but he also demonstrates the pervasive power of the holiday ritual of gift giving and receiving and its folkways of religious observation. By suggesting that consumerism has become the modern American religion Delchant has expanded the discussion of the subject in the same way that earlier scholars have suggested that there is an American civil religion built around reverence for the nation's Founding Fathers, the celebration of democracy and republicanism, and the veneration of iconic spaces and symbols. Delchant finds similar elements in modern consumerism.

Delchant's thesis is provocative and suggestive of many other avenues of research into American religious life. An interesting question, if consumerism is the dominant religion of modern America what happens when society become unable to sustain the level of consumerism currently practiced? All signs point to fundamental shifts in the place of the United States as the leader of the world in standard of living, etc., and two or three generations from now--unless something changes--the manner in which Americans live their lives will be quite different. In such an environment does consumerism evolve to remain a major part of society or is it replaced with something else or is there a crisis of faith? I could go on and on.

This is a very interesting and useful book. I recommend "The Sacred Santa" as a worthwhile thesis helping to explain modern American society.

A compelling work relating consumerism with religions. deChant delves into comparisons between shaman, priests, etc. as they exist within the today's religion of economy (he says economy serves the same function as nature did in relgions of old-- that is, it is an uncontrollable power that must be appeased).

The main point-- Christmas has not been desacrilized. Rather, it has become a sacred holiday of the emerging dominant religion, consumerism.

This is a splendid work for anyone interested in religion, post-modern culture or sociology.

Finally, I have a book that I can turn to, to answer all of my questions about marine animal training! It has become like a bible to me, and whenever I can, I flip through. All the tips seem like they would give you the back door advantage, meaning you'd have a better advantage than a person who hasn't read it, in getting a job!

This book is okay, but would have been MUCH more useful had the writer included more specifics. Sure, you need to take psychology courses, but which courses are most useful??? It's well written, but more of an overview, which (for me) was not very useful.

If you're just beginning to think about a career with marine mammals than this is a great book, that might change your perspective and help you decide if being a marine mammal trainer is really what you want to do. However if you're already on your way to becomming one than most of it you have probabily already figured out your self. I did however find the directory of marine mammal facilities, including specifically what animals they have, extremely helpful. especially the international section. I do have a few corrections however, first the pittsburg zoo no longer has an amazon river dolphin, it passed away in 2002 and to the best of my knowledge the brooklyn aquarium does not have dolphins, only belugas.

This book is an easy read and gives simple explanations. However, it is packed with valuable tips! I recently had an interview for an internship in marine mammal training and every question that they asked in the interview was on the list of questions that were in this book. It gives great tips on how to prepare for the career and what the employers are REALLY looking for.

A book after my own heart!.......2004-03-17

Finally! A book that was written after my own heart! I've had the same dream to one day work with marine mammals since I was 7 years old. I'm 18 now, and that dream has still not changed. But because it is such a competative and unique job, it's not every day you run into a dolphin trainer and therefore, it's difficult to get direct information about just how to go about doing this. Of course I've researched many different books about these beautiful animals, but it's not every day that you find a guide on how to actually achieve this dream career! Imagine how thrilled I was to find this book! It's an inside look at working with marine mammals, by a senior trainer himself. Terry gave me tips and suggestions that I would never have thought of, nor realized until it was perhaps too late. Preparing youself with the proper experience is one of the most important things, and with the help of the "aquarium guide" I discovered that there is a small marine aquarium, not 40 minutes from me, where they have volunteer programs that involve the rescue and rehabilitation of dolphins, otters, and sea turtles. Thank you to Terry Samansky for this wonderful book! I'm sure I will be referring to it throughout my continued career search!
