          4 out of 5 stars It is nice that we finally have an updated book..........2005-08-21

          I felt that the book was basically the same as the previous edition, with the exception of aromatherapy, and electric filing. Unfortionatly no one book can give all of the information that is required about a subject. That is what teaching is all about. I generally supplement the material from other books, and Florida law so our students stay on the right path. Over all I would have to say that this book was above average, and addressed many of the changes in the industry to date.

          I have taught for years and have been impressed by Milady's dedication to the Industry, until now. This new text book was headed in the right direction, with the addition of some fantastic photos for nail diseases, but it missed it's usual high standards drastically. The chapters, especially those most important to the foundation of education, such as sanitation issues and safety issues towards clients, fall far too short. A school is intended to give the basis of a long and safe career in this industry, yet this book irresponsibley dedicated more time to air brushing (which is difficult at best to learn via a book) then it did to the fundamentals of salon safety for both the tech and the client. I am very very disappointed. The chapters seem to be started off in the right direction, then are seemingly cut severly short. The book is choppy and incomplete at best. Sad to see such unprofessional results from a long time industry leader who has continually been the one who set the standards and raised the bar.

                Schroeder has written a very good broad,introductory text that can be effectively used in three different ways.The book can be used as an introduction to operations management for non business or liberal arts majors.The second way that the book can be used is as a supplement to the Knod-Schonberger book or the Stevenson book.The management case studies section at the end of the book is excellent .However, it is not recommended that this book be used as a core textbook in a formal operations management course in a business department curriculum unless the instructor intends to supplement the students reading with numerous technical handouts.For instance,a handout on basic cost-volume analysis must have already been digested by the student before he could make any sense out of the example or exercise problems in chapter 12(Facilities and Aggregate Planning). Shroeder may have assumed that the reader of his text will already have completely mastered many/most of the basic operations management tools and techniques.This should be the case in graduate level courses;the book would be a useful supplement in MBA courses.

                            The title implies a solution to the very practical problem faced by many of us in trying to quantify the effects (ROI among them) of marketing communications. The authors affirm that it is impossible to disentangle the effects of all communications (ads) by the firm and its competitors, not to mention all other contacts customers have with the firm. That I knew.

                            Finally one comes to the grand spreadsheet for solving the riddle. But instead of any useful ideas on how to actually MEASURE the effects of advertising, one is instructed to plug in what amounts to an ASSUMPTION of how your brand advertising will change customers' share of requirements.

                            As a working researcher, this was extremely disappointing to me.

                            For anyone involved in marketing this book gives very practical advice. A common complaint about business books is that they are all OK in theory but contain little in the way of explanations of how to do it - this book however offers not some good case study. Overall very impressive and a must read for anyone involved in sales, advertising or marketing functions. Another book I highly recommended is 60-Minute Brand Strategist by Idris Mootee. This book is LOADED with super solid, meaty real world branding insights and techniques that can are being kept as trade secrets. You will probably find this book a real eye opener. If you're looking for a more balanced marketing book, suggest going for David Aaker's books, some Kotler's books.

                            4 out of 5 stars A solid primer on brand communication return on investment.......2000-12-06

                            I have used this Jeff Walters and Don Schultz book quite a bit to educate myself on ROI methodologies. As a marketing consultant and the former co-CEO of a small internet startup, i found the book to be super helpful in planning analysis programs for brand communication efforts. The detail and help Walters and Schultz lend to beginning and experienced marketers is terrific. I also have seen this book and its methodologies used by my marketing clients with great results. There are few smart companies out there that aren't trying to measure their returns on brand and marketing communications efforts and this book helps lead one down that complex path. Hats off to the authors.

                            This was a very strong book as it gave you a good conceptual overview and then went one step further in giving you details about how to move forward with ROI measurement. The spreadsheet and floppy disk were also an extra in helping you attain an action plan. The other key element that I liked was the the side bars and detailed marketing examples.

                            The authors gave a good presentation of real world marketing applications as well as strong theory regarding the future of marketing communications. Overall a very good book that all marketing management should read.

                            For the first time I have found a book which explains in simple steps how to set about valueing customers and how to develop rules on how much to invest in them. The book took me step by step through the process and included a disc so I could use the process.

                            What a revalation when I applied it to my customers and how I was spending my advertising budget. The agency does not get away that lightly now.

                                          A compendium largely within the boundaries of the liberal social science tradition will be excellent fodder for college-level sociology classes seeking to explore how the Internet challenges modern conventions. Beyond that, look elsewhere.

                                          It's a reader for dumb impressionable first year students at best. If you are really serious about trying to understand common internet culture as it is currently evolving, you are going to waste time and money on this book. Even as a reader it lacks academic rigour, I would be quite worried about the callibre of the course for which this sad, sad attempt is prescribed.

                                          While this is one of the best readers on Communities and Cyberspace many of the essays are dated. While many of the essays like "Gender-Bending", "You Make Me Feel Like a Virtual Woman", and "The Heart of the WELL" that deal with messages boards and gender issues still work quite nicely, some of the others like "Identity in the Age of the Internet: Living in the MUD" do not work as well as they once did because networked gaming now goes past MOOs/MUDs and many students don't relate well to the idea of text based games. That appears to be something reserved for academics and die hard gamers of a time long passed.

                                          With the change in computer user profiles over the three years since this text was published a second edition would be welcome. I would like to see what some of the authors in this text would have to say about the fact that studies show women as the internet user majority, the rise in women gamers, the direct correlation between playing video games and the decrease in suicide attempts, the increase of computerized classrooms, as well as (and most importantly) a real addressing of questions of class, race, and computer/internet access.

                                          On a whole I would recommend this book for use in the classroom but be aware of the fact that in many cases there will be the need for supplemental readings to bridge the gap in the technology timeline.

                                          5 out of 5 stars An Essential Reader.......2000-04-21

                                          Although Amazon calls Richard Holeton the author of this book (as, indeed, does McGraw-Hill), he would far more aptly be called its compiler. Not that compiling is any less respectable than authoring; the medieval societies in which the compilatio flourished provided us with such revered compilers as Geoffrey Chaucer, who took stories already known to his contemporaries and provided a narrative framework in which each had its place.

                                          In Composing Cyberspace Holeton provides readers with virtually all the foundational texts for a study of technology and society. Here one finds writers musing on the effects of technology as early as 1909 (E.M. Forster's The Air-Ship) and as late as 1997. Every fundamental short work (with the possible exception of Sandy Stone's "How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love My Prosthesis") on the formation of a human identity in the age of computers is here, including:
                                          - Sherry Turkle's "Identity in the Age of the Internet: Living in the MUD"
                                          - William Gibson's "Johnny Mnemonic" and "Burning Chrome"
                                          - Julian Dibbel's "A Rape in Cyberspace"
                                          - Howard Rheingold's "The Heart of the WELL"
                                          There are essays, interviews and fiction by such notables as: George Lakoff, Jon Katz, Dale Spender, Jorge Luis Borges, Clifford Stoll, and many, many more. Even Dave Barry has his say.

                                          Composing Cyberspace is divided into three sections: Constructing Identity in the Computer Age, Building Community in the Electronic Age, and Seeking Knowledge in the Information Age. Each section is divided into chapters containing several texts, each of which is followed by a set of "SecondThoughts" for getting the most out of the text. The chapters themselves also have introductions and sets of "Discussion Threads" and "Research Links" for provoking further topical exploration.

                                          The composition of the book makes it appear as a textbook (and it would be a good one), but Composing Cyberspace is more reader than textbook: a set of works essential to anyone thinking seriously about the impact of electronic communication on society.
