1 out of 5 stars More harm than good.......2005-08-03

I bought this book in preparation for the GMAT exam. While the tips on how to solve some of the quantitative problems are valuable, they can be found in other books. The serious problem with this book is that the practice problems in both the verbal and quantitative sections have numerous errors. You will not learn anything from this book and it causes more harm than good. I returned it to the store (not bought from Amazon) shortly after purchase. You'll do better off sticking with the Kaplan guides or the GMAT Official Guide

    1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time.......2004-07-27

I spent 30 mins in reading part of the verbal section in this book. I regret that I should spend my precious time on somewhere else.

The book just simply gives you the answer to the question without too much explanation for each answer choice. Moreover, the explanations are poorly written and organized.

I have returned the book to the store right away.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2003-02-14

This book gives only the most basic of overviews for what you need to know for the real GMAT exam. Additionally, the math questions have many, many typos (for instance, they use a '+' instead of an '=' in the question), so it is impossible to know how to answer the questions. I didn't bother carefully reviewing the verbal section, because I was so disappointed with the math. I would recommend this book, only if you need additional practice math problems, and typos don't drive you crazy. I highly recommend the actual book from ETS and Kaplan books (the other 2 I used) for studying for this exam. (Also Elements of Style by Strunk and White may also be useful to you.)

    2 out of 5 stars Skip it.......2002-03-22

While this book covers many of the same strategies as other books, it is nowhere close to being as complete or as challenging. It also contained several typos. Your time is much better spent with the Kaplan book and CD and GMAC's official prep books- skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great study guide and practice tests........1999-01-15

The Software accompanying this book was the closest ( other than Poweprep from ETS ) that I got to the actual test, as far as the look and feel. Content-wise, it does have some tough math, but overall, it gave me consistent scores which matched almost exactly to my actual GMAT. Make sure to go through the book before you jump to the tests. Improved my score by at least 80-90. With this book , PowerPrep and some tester practice from Princeton Review, I jumped from an initial 570 to 660. Worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Straightforward guide to improving your GMAT CAT scores........1997-10-26

ARCO's guide for taking the GMAT CAT is very thorough and well-written, although it lacks the humor and "chatty" attitude some other lines of study guides are well known for. My only true complaint about this book is that it does not offer any interpretation of the scores you achieve on the practice tests -- you know what you've missed and why, but you have no way of correlating your performance to true GMAT scores. Sort of a bummer...

        Book Description

Six Sigma Simplified is a step-by-step guide to getting started with Six Sigma in any size company. Most existing companies are at level 3.5 sigma (1-2% error rate). Most startup companies are only at level 2 sigma (15-30%). Dramatic improvements are possible by following a simple process: Focus, Improve, Sustain, and Honor.

        1. developing a Master Improvement Story that focuses on 50% or greater reduction in time, defects, and costs
        2. defining the key problems to solve (less than 4% of your business creates over 50% of the waste, rework, and cost.)
        3. highly focused teams of employees who analyze and determine the root causes and solutions in a day or less.
        4. implementing and verifying the improvement has reduced defects, time or cost by 50% or more.
        5. sustaining the improvement using flow and control charts.
        6. recognizing and rewarding the improvement teams for their efforts.

Most companies find that they can make a one-sigma improvement in 12 months and a two-sigma jump in 24 months. Each jump will increase profits dramatically, because you're no longer spending money on waste and rework.

Once you get to 5-sigma, you may need to use more exotic techniques like QFD, Quality Function Deployment, and DOE, Design of Experiements to redesign your processes to deliver six sigma (3.4 defects per million) quality. For most companies, it will be several years before they reach this level of performance. Until then, you can get by with the tree diagram, line graph, pareto chart, Ishikawa diagram, and some control charts. Readers can download a free demo of these tools-the QI Macros addin macros for Excel-from .

Many companies are making the same mistakes with Six Sigma that they made with TQM in the 80's and 90's. They are measuring their progress by number of Black Belt's and Green Belt's trained and projects started. This is a mistake. The real measure of Six Sigma success is results that you can measure. In a $50 million dollar company or larger, each project should save $250,000 or more.

There's a secret to implementing any change or innovation like Six Sigma. That secret is in a book called the Diffusion of Innovations by Everett Rogers and the essence of that research is in Six Sigma Simplified. What's the secret? Start with only 4% of your employees who are early adopters of new ideas. Focus them on the 4% of the business that will yield 50% improvements. Make them successful. They will convince the next 4% and so on. Somewhere around 16% adoption of Six Sigma, the whole organization will reach a critical mass where it will adopt the change more easily than you can image. If, however, you try to train everyone, you'll risk offending the powerful laggards and late majority (the settlers). I call them the corporate immune system. If you irritate them, they can kill Six Sigma before it starts. The other benefit from this approach is that you limit your investment until Six Sigma starts to pay for itself. You'll also prevent wasting time and effort on projects ! that aren't valuable.

        2 out of 5 stars Sales Presentation.......2003-11-07

As I was reading this book, I felt like I was at a sales presentation. Lots of razzmatazz and little substance. It just skimmed over everything and didn't really explain anything. Then I got to the back of the book and found all the pages of products for sale by the author's company and realized that it was a sales presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Greatly exceeded my expectations.......2002-08-06

The author skillfully manages to make learning relatively advanced statistics easy through stories, examples and anecdotes. Where the skills comes in is the wide range of complex topics that are introduced and clearly explained. To a highly technical reader this may come across as either condescending. However, the fact is that all of the important details and techniques are covered in great detail, and are wrapped in friendly prose. This ensures that hard-to-learn concepts need not be hard to learn, nor the learning process intimidating.

What I like is the systematic coverage of key concepts and knowledge areas, each of which builds upon the preceding topic. The book starts with compelling business reasons for embarking on a 6-Sigma initiative, and what 6-Sigma entails. It them introduces an approach for reducing cycle time and improving quality in a 2- and 4-step process. After establishing that framework, the book shows how to sustain the improvements using key indicators for process stability and capability, and how to effectively employ statistical process controls to proactively track them.

The foregoing alone would make this an excellent introductory book on 5-Sigma, but the author goes on to tackle advanced topics such as design of experiments, quality function deployment and benchmarking. These are certainly integral components of a complete 6-Sigma initiative, but I didn't expect to find them covered in an introductory book. I also liked the complete coverage of basic TQM tools and techniques at the end of the book.

If you need to either learn the fundamentals of 6-Sigma or train a non-technical workforce this is an ideal book. If you are going to teach or facilitate a 6-Sigma workshop you'll also want the author's "Six Sigma Instructor Guide" (ISBN 1884180140), which provides a syllabus and learning objectives that use this book as the student text.

5 out of 5 stars Six sigma simplified.......2001-06-22

It's so refreshing to review a six sigma publication that doesn't pretend to be "rocket science", I particularly enjoyed the extremely simple application of the six sigma methodology and the de- mystifying of the six sigma methodology that tends to be extremely mystified in the majority of six sigma publications. This publication would be an excellent addition to any internal training initiative endeavouring to educate and inform employees of the intentions of this quality tool in a non intelectual way that allows for the integration of more complex mathematical methods of data collection, the clear way that the selection and use of control charts were presented was even understood by my colleauges who admit to being affraid of math. All in all this publication is a practical handbook for breaking the uninitiated into the six sigma philosophy.

                                  Book Description

For nearly two decades, The Fiske Guide to Colleges has been the indispensable source of information for students and parents all over the country. Candid, lively, and reliable, it speaks with unique authority covering everything from where a school's history department ranks academically to where its sports teams rank nationally, from which dining halls should be avoided to which professors' classes shouldn't be missed. The result is -- as USA Today has written -- "the most readable and informative" of all the college guides published. Based on more annually updated surveys of thousands of students, teachers, and administrators than any other guide, this thoroughly revised edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges answers all the questions prospective students, guidance counselors, and parents might ever have. You'll find:
all the application information you need--where to find them, which ones are the most difficult to fill out, which schools have long-lead deadlines
quality-of-life, academic, and social-life ratings for each school -- "party school" or "monastery"?
listings of each college's strongest departments and majors
Fiske's exclusive selection of the "Best Buys" for 2001 -- the schools that offer you the most value for your money

"Picking the right college ... is one of the most important decisions that any young person will ever make," says Edward B. Fiske, former education editor for the New York Times. College is a major investment of time, energy, and money, so it's important to collect as much information as possible to help you make the right choice. The Fiske Guide to Colleges 1999 is an excellent source of helpful information. Rather than trying to offer a comprehensive guide to the nation's colleges, The Fiske Guide to Colleges 1999 focuses on the "best and most interesting colleges and universities" and offers in-depth profiles supported by clearly presented statistics. Each of the more than 300 schools selected for inclusion (on the basis of academic strength, adjusted for geographical diversity and for a mixture of public and private institutions) is rated in terms of three major themes: academics, social life, and quality of life. Each review essay offers information relevant to both students and parents--for example, Warren Towers is considered the best dorm for freshmen at Boston University, the history department at the University of California, Berkeley, is "dazzling," and the best place to get food at University of Colorado, Boulder, is the Alferd Packer Grill (named after a man convicted in Colorado of cannibalism in 1883). In addition to the helpful individual reviews, the book contains an excellent "news you can use" section, which outlines the current trends in college admissions. Another nice feature of this annually updated guide is the new "1999 Best Buys" list--a list of 43 private and public institutions offering an excellent education at a "relatively modest cost." Three separate indexes help guide you to individual colleges, but the essays are entertaining and encourage browsing. With its clear layout and honest--and opinionated--writing, The Fiske Guide to Colleges 1999 comes highly recommended for anyone considering an extended visit to the Groves of Academe. --C.B. Delaney

Since the age 14, I have looked at Peterson's and CollegeBoard and all the websites and guidebooks in between, and yet it was not until I opened this great book that i was satisfied. I did not want the stats anymore, I did not want the tuition costs, NO.. i wanted the experience of the school from the student's perspectives presented in a logical, unbiased manner without spending hundreds of dollars on plane tickets and car rentals for endless campus visits--- we have a winner! If you look through the book you can see that there are both ups and downs listed. For example, Boston College, he pointed out didn't have the qulaity of education to justify its popularity. Pro's and Cons are listed. Fiske clearly describes various aspects of the schools through quotes tediousley collected from student surveys. The phrase- "straight from the horses mouth" couldn't be more appropriate here. My routine as i approach my senior year is: think about college, start stressing, stress some more, whip out the ol' Fiske guide to review my top choice schools, and then be able to breath again.... The book is good for both a lost student or anxious parent. It includes a range of colleges for all types of people, and if you are just lost and read the book cover to cover-- it is truly the best starting place. You can start to figure out what you want in a college and which colleges have it. I would reccommend strlongly reading the introduction explaining his ratings, and i hope you buy this book because wherever you are in the college process- It is the book for you.

When deciding on a college in 1991, I extensively used this book. I liked the story-like format that gave a glipse of what I believed to be what a particular school would "feel like" if I attended it. I ultimately chose Pomona College and graduated in 1996.

One of the passages from the 1991 book describes that students sometimes relax by "tossing a frisbee between kegs of beer parked on the lawn". Pomona's alcohol policy was changed in 1990 to EXPLICTLY prohibit any activity of this sort...this SIMPLY WASN'T ALLOWED...in fact this passage was so out-of-step with campus culture as to be laughable. During my first two years at Pomona (1992-1994) there was something of an alcohol gestapo that sought out students drinking in their own rooms, to say nothing of stomping out any possiblity of public consumption of alcohol. The point is, at least one of the book's descriptions about campus culture was WAY off base...perhaps it was a remnant from an earlier time (mid 1980's?) when campus culture would have permited public consumption of alcohol....perhaps the book was just a year or two out of date?

Well, in ensuing years I sometimes picked up the latest Fiske guide in a bookstore to see what was being written about my school. 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2000...each edition maintained the same passage about kegs on the lawn.

I began to wonder if Fiske ever actually revised the content of the book apart from adjusting the fluctuating SAT and demographic numbers. I have not read the 2002 version, but BE WARY. If their description of my school can maintain a grossly incorrect passage for more than a decade, what might be written about the school that you're interested in that is similarly incorrect or outdated?

DO NOT TRUST THIS BOOK to get it right. Use multiple sources and VISIT the schools you're thinking about if you can afford to do so! Good luck to you!

Fiske's guide is one of the better guides. It provides detailed prose summaries of each college's strengths. Its primary problem is that it basically says something nice about every school and isn't the most candid book. I found it helpful to use this book in conjunction with a book like Allen's "College Admissions Trade Secrets" to navigate my way through the admissions process. Fiske's book provides a basic intro to each college and Allen's book provides the details and dirt of the admissions process. I also found Princeton Review's book helpful in conjunction with Fiske's book. Review's book has a lot of subjective info, but it adds the candid details that Fiske's book lacks.

If you're conducting the college search, you definitely need to read this book. It is very comprehensive and provides tons of useful information to get you on your way. I am the author of The ABC's of College Life, a savvy street-smart guide, and I give the Fiske Guide to Colleges two thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars An excellent resource!.......2001-11-27

As a professional college advisor, I purchase the updated version of the Fiske Guide to Colleges for my office the moment it is available. Why Fiske as opposed to the Princeton Review, Kaplan or Peterson's you ask? Because, in my opinion, it is one of the best publications on the market today.

There are several features which make it both unique and user-friendly. For families just beginning this difficult process, I have found that the most useful inclusion in this guide is the section where it states where students who apply to a certain college also apply. So, if you research Georgetown (of course I had to use my alma mater for an example) and really like the school, Fiske would tell you that students who applied to Georgetown also might apply to universities like U Penn, Duke, Harvard, Johns Hopkins and UVA. Thus, Fiske is a great help in expanding and creating a student's list. It is also an excellent starting point.

Another one of my favorite features of this guide is that it discussed the academic strengths of a college. If for example, you are thinking about engineering as a major, Fiske will let you know if that is considered to be a strong program of study at a particular university. While some may feel that high school seniors do not really know what they want to study or do in life, I have found that a student who wants to study chemistry, for example, will often end up majoring or minoring in a science or related field. The same holds true for those interested in liberal arts or social science. While this generalization does not hold true in every case, it is a trend that I have noticed. If you are concerned about switching majors and not locking yourself into one particular program, look for a school that is strong across the curriculum as opposed to one that focuses in a particular area. By examining Fiske's strength of program listings for each school you are interested in, you will better be able to determine if a school can meet your academic needs.

There is one way in which Fiske could improve future guides. It would be useful to have a table in the Appendix which listed schools by strength of major. Hence, if you were seeking an institution that was strong in economics, you could reference the appendix's economics section and review a list of schools whose economic programs were considered strong. This would make the guide easier to use.

Overall, I would advise you to make the Fiske Guide one of your first purchases when beginning the college process in January of your junior year. It will be an excellent resource and serve you well up to the day you mail your applications.

                                  Book Description

There is a strong awareness that the new economy has arrived, and that firms and management need to focus on a plethora of new issues at present only dimly perceived. The astute management of technology can advance not only the fortunes of the innovators, but also of society at large. In this book, David Teece considers how firms can exploit technological innovation, protecting their intellectual capital, while staying ahead of the competition. He provides frameworks as well as practical advice, looking in particular at the organization structure most likely to support innovation, and how managerial decision and strategy affect the division of the gains. This will be essential reading for academics, managers, and students alike who want to keep abreast of contemporary strategic challenges.

In his preface, author David J. Teece promises a theoretical framework for understanding intellectual property and practical advice about managing it. Theory ultimately prevails in this book, but valuable nuggets of managerial guidance await any entrepreneur willing to dig for them. As a professor and as the presenter of Oxford's Clarendon Lecture in Management Studies, from which this book is drawn, Teece naturally tends toward abstract thinking. Some of the territory has been traveled before (i.e. the message that bureaucratic, hierarchical organizations tend to stifle innovation) but Teece adds a lot of intriguing material. We [...] believe analytically minded academics, entrepreneurs and executives will find Teece's volume illuminating, most notably his educated perspective on antitrust activism in the high tech arena. He concludes that government regulators should probably stick to regulating industries they understand. Well, if they want to understand intellectual property, they should start here.

2 out of 5 stars Managing Intellectual Capital. What, how and by whom?.......2001-08-28

You are about to realize a misconception between two related but different terms: intellectual capital and intellectual property. Browsing throughout the book you will hardly find any references to intellectual capital, including a brief definition! Thus you should not be surprised by not finding any reference to intellectual capital in the Index. One would expect some heated discussion over this controversial concept before being offered a framework to manage it. Forget it. Despite author's attempt to write about the promising field of IC all sections seem to converge around the intellectual property discussion. The management of intellectual capital is something else than the management of intellectual capital. The wrong audiences may than be easily caught in this trap.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative theoretical perspectives, some well-worn.......2001-05-26

This is an excellent book on the knowledge-based view of the firm. Although Teece is unsure in his preface whoether is succesfully addresses both academic audiences and managers. From an academic perspective, I can surely claim that this book is theoretically interesting. I recognized two portions of this book that draw heavily on Teece's work published previously in California Management Review (parts of Chapter 1 and all of chapter 4). What is certainly most interesting out of the 300 pages of small type is Section 2. This section provides a compelling set of arguments on the impact of market structures and governance modes on intellectual capital. Notabily missing, however, is incorporation of the knowledge-integration perspective that Grant et. al have been building for the past half decade. The case study on Pilkinton Glass is also well worn, and Teece clearly acknowledges that. Information technologists should not hold thier breath because this work seems to take a rather passive stand on the role of IT in mobilizing intellectual assets. The references at the end provide an impressive array of literature in economics that Teece draws on. The readibility and plausibility of Teece's arguments should come as no surprise to anyone who has read Teece's earlier scholarly work. Overall, I'd say that this was worth the thirty five dollars.

                                        Description:
This paper analyzes the failure of an initiative of the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Public Safety. It argues that an inability to understand power relationships during systems analysis, design, and implementation has serious implication on the well being of an organization and its business processes; thus, it is a key factor in IS's project failure. The argument is conducted by evaluating various dimensions of power. Lessons are drawn that return to the importance of considering organizational power issues in implementing a successful computer-based system and in realizing an information technology enabled strategic change initiative.
