Review of the Abyss.......2001-02-01

As an armchair science lover, I found the Abyss of Time an eye opening book. It is not for the faint hearted to attempt because it does have a lot of fifty dollar words in it. But if you are looking for a really in depth look at how scientists through the ages developed the understanding and beliefs about the age of the earth and the processes that change it's surface this book is fascinating reading. I have read it again and again and still find it a good read. It is the history of the science of Geology basically.

Fables from India Well Presented........2002-03-15

Pancatantra the ancient book of fables, is an interesting collection of animal stories composed in India around the third century of the Christian era. It has been one of the first Indian classics to be translated into the western languages. Therefore these fables with their relevance to political, moral and religious life have become widely known and acclaimed. Patrick Olivelle the chair of the department of Asian Studies at the University of Texas in Austin, equipped with necessary expertise and familiarity with the subject matter and language, has translated these fables and rendered them in plain everyday language, though with all their complexities, for the sake of the American readers. The very informative introduction and extensive explanatory notes make the text fairly simple and easy to understand and relish. For those interested in the Indian classics, this storybook is a wonderful gift.

A classic children's book (and manual on life...).......2000-09-13

This is a translation of an old Indian children's book that is, not surprisingly, also a moral tale on how to live, and, perhaps more importantly, how to govern. I'm not in a position to comment as to whether this is a good or bad translation; it is a fun read for adults and I suppose that a pretty progressive or multicultural parent could read it to their kids in place of the Brothers Grimm or something else....

I liked the book. Other books in the age-old stories of wisdom from around the world: "Monkey: A Journey to the West" by Wu Ch'eng-en (translated by Arthur Waley, among others), the tale of Mil-e-re-pa (translated by a number of people: this one might be too risque for a lot of kids....), the 'Meditations of Marcus Aureleus', and the 'Conference of the Birds' by Farud-din Attar. Not that I am an expert on raising kids through multicultural readings.....

This is a neat book (though I think that this particular translation might be a bit dry.... it's been a while since I read it...) and it should be bought. And someone other than me should have reviewed it!

Powerful images of archetype, myth, and heritage!.......2001-03-26

My 28-year residency in New Mexico ended with my recent move to California. Viewing Miguel Gandert's photographs opened the floodgates of memory in ways I had not anticipated.

Gandert's images carry the viewer into the most important dimension of ritual: the experiential element. Witnessing these ritual dances, even as a mere spectator, can be a moving experience. A vivid recollection of one New Year's Day at Jemez Pueblo Plaza comes to mind. I sat crosslegged on the ground at the inward-facing edge of the assembly, following the action of the Matachine dancers. A little boy portraying El Torito, the bull, was being chased by a whip-wielding Abuelo, who represents both wise elder and taunting clown. I held my hands over my head, feigning a protective gesture in mock fear, as they ran around me in ever tightening circles. The double-line pattern of the danzantes suddenly shifted and swept over me on both sides with ribbons flying in a swirl of color. In that moment I found all concept of time and structure collapsing into liminality. Afterwards, I became concerned that I might have inadvertently violated ritual space. Upon expressing my feelings to a tribal member, however, I was assured that no such transgression had taken place and that I might have even received a blessing.

The event described above could, no doubt, be interpreted quite differently from another standpoint and through another's eyes. Similarly, this book can be appreciated on many different levels. It's relevancy to universal elements and ritual may resonate with a widely diverse audience. Gandert and four knowledgeable essayists create a compelling cultural admixture of polarity and paradox. The resultant images emerge through layers of time, space, and history like so many bubbles from some deep, ancient well. This book is truly a verbal and visual treasure.

Reviewer: A reader from Southern Colorado - Northern New Mexico. An excellent aid for those of us researching our family roots in New Mexico. This book does much to explain and date the migration of our Hispanic/Indian ancestors in and from the Rio Grande Valley during the past 400 years.

Excellent depiction of the Hispano subculture.......2000-04-15

In this book Nostrand describes the cultural geography and history of the "Hispano homeland" -- a region in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado with a distinct and interesting history and culture. He also traces the connections between this region and outside influences, from the early Spanish settlers, to the Pueblo Indians and Anglos, to relations with other Mexican Americans in the U.S. today. This book is useful in understanding borderland influences further away from the more often represented U.S./Mexico border. Covering over 400 years of history, it shows how border influences change and last through time. It's well written, extremely thorough with good maps tracing "intrusions" of other cultures into the region, and good tabular information, too. I found this book invaluable for my own work in northern New Mexico, but this book may also be useful for those interested in rural development, community studies, and sense of place, as Nostrand articulates well what the Hispano Homeland means to the people who live there and why it becomes necessary for some to leave. It is a good complement to Carlos Velez-Ibanez' Border Visions, which is less geographically based and focuses more on cultural place closer to the U.S. - Mexico border.

This book is an investigation of the methodological and epistemological foundations of macroeconomic theory, based on an examination of the theories of Keynes and Lucas. Professor Vercelli first discusses the methodological issues that lie behind the conflict among different schools of thought in macroeconomics, issues that are central not only to many branches of economics but also to other scientific disciplines. The author compares the two main alternative research programs in macroeconomics: that outlined by Keynes in his "General Theory," and that suggested by Lucas, the leader of the new classical economists. After examining the methodological underpinnings of these conflicting views, he concludes that a Keynesian conception of macroeconomics as a discipline autonomous from microeconomics and open to theoretical and methodological innovation should be defended, thus excluding fundamentalism either of the Keynesian or new classical varieties.

Vercelli(V),in his chapter 5 on uncertainty,prediction and flexibility,correctly identifies one of the major differences between Lucas and J M Keynes.The difference is over the risk versus uncertainty(or the ambiguity of D Ellsberg) distinction made by Keynes,Knight and Schumpeter(whom Vercelli ignores)in the period from 1912 to 1937.Lucas argues that no economic analysis is possible if a decision maker faces a condition of uncertainty.Economic analysis is only possible under conditions of risk.A risky situation is one where the decision maker knows the mean and standard deviation of a unique normal probability distribution that is stable over time.Under the rational expectations hypothesis of Muth-Lucas,all individual subjective normal probability distributions at the micro level are distributed around a single,unique,stable objective macroscopic normal probability distribution.At the macro level,only a type I error can be committed .No type II error can occur.At the micro decision level,all type I and II errors cancel each other out,leading the decision makers ,in the aggregate ,to correctly predict the mean of the objective distribution.This result can occur in Keynes's approach only if the weight of the evidence,w,is equal to 1,where w is measured on the unit interval [0,1]and 0<=w<=1.This means that the decision maker has a complete information set.All relevant,potential evidence is available for use.In this case there is no uncertainty,only risk.Suppose that the data has also passed a Lexis Q test for stability.Then the Lucas outcome becomes an extreme limiting case of Keynes's general theory of decision making that was first presented by Keynes in 1907 and formally published as chapter 26 in the A Treatise on Probability(TP)in 1921.Keynes called his decision rule a"conventional coefficient of risk and weight" c.Keynes's decision rule,c, solves all of the paradoxes of Subjective Expected Utility (SEU)theory ,which also turns out to be a special case of Keynes's general theory of decision making under conditions of risk and uncertainty.Since Lucas regards rational expectations as an application of SEU,his position is again a special or extreme case of Keynes's general theory.Unfortunately,(V)never read chapter 26 of the TP.He attempts to substitute the work of Ellsberg and Gardenfors-Sahlin based on his misbelief that Keynes had no formal treatment of uncertainty(weight of the evidence)in the TP.V also appears to have no knowledge of Keynes's interval estimate approach to probability as covered in chapters 15 and 17 of the TP.Likewise, V completely overlooks Keynes's entension of his c coefficient model in chapter 17 of the General Theory on pp. 239-241 where the reader is told by Keynes that, in his discussions of his MEC theory in chapter 11,which used the NPV model,he had not discounted for risk and uncertainty.Thus,the NPV model needed to be multiplied by the c coefficient of risk and weight.Once this is done,one obtains answers similar to those derived by users of the "real options" approach.Finally,V's attempt at creating his own"k-uncertainty"approach leads to results that are analytically inferior to those obtained by Keynes 97 years ago.What should have been a straightforward task,demonstrating that Lucas is a very special case of Keynes,is made difficult and problematic by V,who,nevertheless,does finally show the extreme limitations of the Lucas approach.

There's no business like big business--which, in order to be big, often operates more like show business. This is the thesis of William L. Bird in Better Living, a survey of corporate America's use of advertising and the media between the years 1935 and 1955. The topic is fascinating, though the writing tends towards the academic at times, such as in this passage describing a National Association of Manufacturers (NAM)-sponsored program:

Despite the troubling transparency of American Family Robinson, the NAM's willingness to dramatize their deepest fears and concerns suggested an out. In the process of building a dramatic program for the manufacturers, the specialist could play a mediating role, negotiating a formula, and, conversely, the formula itself could play a mediating role, sustaining a "multiplicity of meanings other than a monolithic dominant point of view."

Nevertheless, Bird builds an interesting case history; American Family Robinson, for example, was a radio soap opera in which the Robinson family expressed the pro-business, anti-New Deal sentiments of its sponsor. As corporate attitudes evolved from the early days of radio through the use of film and the advent of television, more and more entertainment became a definite strategy in getting business's message across.

Living Better is geared more toward an academic readership instead of a general one. Familiarity with New Deal policies and politics is useful when tackling this book--so is a magnifying glass for anyone over the age of 30, since the print is small, and the margins narrow. Still, after reading about big business's insidious advances into the national psyche via nightly entertainment in the early years of radio and television, one might think twice about what one's viewing now.
