    Book Description

The impact of transport on the environment is a major issue of worldwide concern. This important new book presents state-of-the-art contributions on spatial and technological aspects of transport in relation to environmental degradation, together with analysis of sustainable transport policy.

The first part of the book focuses on policy analysis. A sustainable transport strategy should include all elements of the transport sector, transcend the usual time and space constraints and address economic and equity concerns, in addition to the environmental targets it is often designed to meet. The second part concerns technological issues. The authors do not simply describe technological possibilities, but are instead concerned with broader issues such as scenario development and implementation strategies. The third part concerns spatial aspects, including an increasing spatial level in discussing sustainable transport issues, from the local and urban level to global aspects of sustainable transport. Transport and Environment thus offers a multi-disciplinary perspective on the multifaceted field of sustainable transport.

The distinguished array of contributors and broad scope of the work will ensure this book is essential reading for scholars of transport and environmental economics, policymakers and those involved in urban and transport planning.

          2 out of 5 stars What a rip off.......2005-05-22

This book is not only extrememly overpriced, but it is also poorly written, full of typos, and the graphs, charts, pictures etc. aren't very useful or relevant. Unfortunately, it was a required textbook for a college course I took a couple of semesters ago. I strongly advised the instructor to find a different text that was better written and lower priced.

1 out of 5 stars Should not be titled "selling on the web".......2003-02-16

Why is the name of this book "Selling on the Web?"

75% of the book is devoted to non web selling-placing ads in newspapers for catalogs and other non-web selling instruments. Finally, late in the second half of the book, the author says, "oops, this is about selling on the web." and finally puts web related selling info in.
There is nothing about using things like targeted marketing through purchasing keywords at services like ... Amazon.com stores. Anyone who is not experienced with selling on the web would FAIL AT IT--MISERABLY!!
If it was possible to give this book no stars I would!!

1 out of 5 stars How to do everything but sell on the web........2002-05-17

Selling on the web (E-Commerce) has one very big problem; selling on the web.
The author starts the book out with traditional non-online selling information that may be beneficial for people trying to reach a smaller group of people, such as go to the newspapers in your area, how to write headlines for ads and copyrighting.
It isn't until chapter 2 that the author even mentions the web and then not until the fourth section of the chater. Then when he does, he starts out by insinuating that the reader has the mentality of a newborn by explaining what the difference is between the internet and the web and what email is. Unless you have been living on Pluto the last ten years, you should know this. Each subsequent chapter only has one or two sections that touch on the internet, almost as if this is an afterthought. He touches on advertising on newsgroups and bulletin boards. He expains what search engines and directories are but doesn't explain how to get the optimum use out of them.

The only good section of the book is the resource listings that the author gives you at the end.
The publisher E-Z Guides also has a book available called Internet Marketing Made EZ. Does it have everything that should have been in this book or is it about plumbing?

I would recommend Starting an ebay business for dummies for good information on web selling.

                    Book Description

Himalayan Hermitess is a vivid account of the life and times of a Buddhist nun living on the borderlands of Tibetan culture. Orgyan Chokyi (1675-1729) spent her life in Dolpo, the highest inhabited region of the Nepal Himalayas. Illiterate and expressly forbidden by her master to write her own life story, Orgyan Chokyi received divine inspiration, defied tradition, and composed one of the most engaging autobiographies of the Tibetan literary tradition. The Life of Orgyan Chokyi is the oldest known autobiography authored by a Tibetan woman, and thus holds a critical place in both Tibetan and Buddhist literature. In it she tells of the sufferings of her youth, the struggle to escape menial labor and become a hermitess, her dreams and visionary experiences, her relationships with other nuns, the painstaking work of contemplative practice, and her hard-won social autonomy and high-mountain solitude. In process it develops a compelling vision of the relation between gender, the body, and suffering from a female Buddhist practitioner's perspective. Part One of Himalayan Hermitess presents a religious history of Orgyan Chokyi's Himalayan world, the Life of Orgyan Chokyi as a work of literature, its portrayal of sorrow and joy, its perspectives on suffering and gender, as well as the diverse religious practices found throughout the work. Part Two offers a full translation of the Life of Orgyan Chokyi. Based almost entirely upon Tibetan documents never before translated, Himalayan Hermitess is an accessible introduction to Buddhism in the premodern Himalayas.

5 out of 5 stars Life of a Buddhist nun.......2007-03-08

The beginning of this book is a bit academic, but the story of her life is a very touching and moving story. It is a valuable insight into the life of a very advanced practitioner in the late 1600s and is well worth reading.

                    1 out of 5 stars Warning - scholarly.......2006-12-03

I am sorry to have to write what may be a slightly negative review. However, as there were no reviews when I looked at this book here on Amazon, I bought it rather blindly. So I will now let you know what I think of it.

Firstly I was getting ready for a lovely life story. There are excellant life stories written, such as the life of Milarepa, and the life of Marpa. However, this book is quite different. For a start, even though it is 220 pages long, the actual Life story only takes 51 pages (a fair amount of which is empty space, so actually a good deal fewer true pages than that).

Coming to the Life story then, we encounter quite a strange writing style. Here is an example of a sentance: "Some bad person took [them] away, and [I] wept a great deal."
This makes me thing, who is Mr Schaeffer writting for? If it were a paper he was writing as a translation assignment for a university course, I could understand. But for the public? It is cryptic scholar writing, and there is surely no need for this. It serves no benefit to write in that way.

Then there are occasions when the text makes no sense. Here is an example:
"Dirt got in my mouth and my hair, and then a rock went down my mouth." What does that mean? And Mr Schaeffer puts a note. If you look up the note in the back, it says "translation tentative". There are 8 such examples.

So I thought, how is it possible that he studied this text (i.e. studied under a master) and could not get to grips with the meaning? So I turned to the Acknowledgments. There he seems to imply that he did not study this text with anyone, from what I can understand. In fact, the only Tibetan person he mentions at all in the acknowledgments is the fellow who painted the picture for the book cover.

It may also be worthy to note the dedication. It is very nice. Mr Schaeffer dedicates the book to his mother, father, wife and daughter. That's very nice. However let's take another example. Let's take "Repeating the Words of the Buddha", and book by Tulku Urgen Rinpoche. The dedication for that book reads "This book is dedicated to the Buddhadharma and all sentient beings. It is said that when the teachings of the Buddha flourish, there will be happiness for all beings in this life, in the bardo, and in following lives."

The point seems to me to be, the former book (Himalayan Hermitess) seems to me to be a book about Buddhism, by a scholar perhaps, for students perhaps, or maybe anthropologists? The latter (Repeating the Words of the Buddha) seems to be a Buddhist book, by a Buddhist, for Buddhists.

If you lie in the latter category, I highly recommend the latter book, or any by Tulku Urgen, or Chogyam Trungpa, or if you want to read something systematic, please see Reginal Ray's two volume Indestructible Truth and Sectrets of the Vajra World.

If this upsets anyone I do appologise. I do wish you find what will help you.

                          Book Description

Today's global economy is genuinely borderless. Information, capital, and innovation flow all over the world at top speed, enabled by technology and fueled by consumers' desires for access to the best and least expensive products. This instant migration of ideas and resources has rendered assumptions about international competition obsolete. In its wake, policymakers and managers have had to accept the legitimacy of many forms of capitalism, rework the mechanics of trade and trade policy, and redefine the objectives and responsibilites of top-level management.

                            Book Description

Globalization is one of today's most powerful and pervasive ideas – for some a welcome dream, for others a nightmare. The term is used in the popular press as a sort of shorthand for the notion that all parts of the world are becoming more alike. It is also used as a marketing concept to sell goods, commodities and services. "Going global" has become the mantra for a whole range of companies, business gurus and institutions. John Rennie Short disagrees with this interpretation, arguing that the world today actually thrives on local differences and that a global polity tends to reinforce – not repress – the power of individual nation-states. He insists that globalization is not so much replacing difference with sameness as providing opportunities for new interactions between spaces and locations, new connections between the global and the local, new social landscapes and more diversity rather than less.

Input-Output Analysis contains new contributions to inter-industry economics by a set of internationally respected authors. The first part sketches the current state-of-the-art and explores the frontiers for traditional topics in input-output analysis such as inter-industry linkages, feedback effects, and the composition of economic changes. The second part crosses the borders of traditional input-output analysis, covering issues that change the visualization of economic structures, the application of generalized cost functions, and the adoption of alternative modeling frameworks.

                                    Book Description

Arthropods are the most diverse group of organisms on our planet, and the tropical rainforests represent the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems. This volume provides an overview of data collected during recent studies in Australia, Africa, Asia, and South America. The contributions focus on the distribution of arthropods and their use of resources in the rainforest canopies, providing a basis for comparison between the forest ecosystems of the main biogeographical regions. The temporal dynamics of arthropod communities, habitats and food selection are examined within and among tropical tree crowns, as are the effects of forest disturbance.

                                            Book Description

The use of e-mail, Web conferencing and streaming media in corporate sales and marketing has helped thousands of businesses significantly increase sales at considerably lower customer acquisition costs in the past year. This report analyzes the key vendors and service providers for e-mail, Web conferencing and streaming media communications. It also examines how enterprises use these communications tools in their sales and marketing efforts and outlines several examples and case studies. Actual case study results presented in this report include a 77 percent reduction in sales lead generation costs by an enterprise software company; 10 to 15 percent increases in conversion rates by an online retailer and a 50 percent reduction in sales cycle times by an equipment financing company. The markets for each of the three technologies are expanding significantly. Enterprises implementing marketing solutions correctly are achieving impressive results in generating new sales leads and converting them into customers. Exhibit 1 shows the primary objectives pursued through e-mail marketing, Web conferencing and streaming media solutions.

                                                  Book Description

How many of today's leading corporations are successfully winning back old customers and attracting new ones

The new purchasing patterns of disenchanted customers and the demise of brand loyalty have compelled many endangered corporate giants to radically alter their thinking about product design and marketing. This book describes how leading companies such as IBM, Nestle, Dupont, AT&T, and Panasonic have stopped creating products for "buyers" and have started considering the long-term needs of users.

                                                  * Packed with real-world cases which demonstrate crucial ideas, tools, and techniques in action at leading firms

                                                    Book Description

How important are the remaining barriers to integration in international goods markets and how would eliminating them affect global and individual countries' welfare? Major current initiatives, such as multilateral trade liberalization in the Doha Round and the efforts to complete the European Common Market, imply that additional integration is highly desirable, while the widespread use of the term "globalization" to describe our era suggests that it is already almost complete.

Has Globalization Gone Far Enough: The Cost of Fragmented Markets studies these questions using the most comprehensive price data available. The authors, Scott C. Bradford and Robert Z. Lawrence find that there is considerable international market fragmentation among industrial countries—this, firms charging different prices for similar productions in different national markets—even among countries with low tariff barriers.

Bradford and Lawrence estimate that integration among the eight countries in their sample—Australia, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the Untied States—would raise global GDP by more than $500 billion. This would increase the size of the world economy by over 2 percent. Remarkably, almost half the global gain in these eight countries could be reaped if Japan alone eliminated its international fragmentation.
