          Book Description

The goal of Inventory Management will be to explain the dynamics of inventory management's principles, concepts, and techniques as they relate to the entire supply chain (customer demand, distribution, and product transformation processes). The interrelationships of all functions will be defined. The book concentrates on understanding the many ramifications of inventory management. In today's competitive business environment, inventory management has proven to be most critical, and this book is directed to the management of inventory to assist in better understanding the body of knowledge required to operate in a competitive world. Almost all functions such as sales, engineering, and accounting have an impact and are impacted by inventory management. The book will assist in the training of students as well as APICS CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management) candidates. As such it will not only be a textbook, but also a desk reference for those employees responsible for controlling inventories, and thereby assist in reducing cost, improving customer service, and maximizing capacity. Each chapter concludes with a case study and suggested solution. The case studies tell the story of a growing company, Smith Industries, and the related inventory management problems it had to address. The problems addressed relate to the subject matter of the chapter.

                      Book Description

Not only classroom tested, this book has truly been classroom driven. David Gerbing has been teaching this material in his own classes for over 3 years and revising it to better address difficult topics and areas of student confusion. This Excel driven text combines the presentation of content, the illustration of concepts, and multiple opportunities for application throughout the body of each chapter; the author does not wait until the end of the chapter to provide exercises which reinforce the material. He relies heavily on visual examples (line graphs, tables, histograms, screen dumps from Excel, ect.) to explain and support the theoretical material being discussed. The integration of content and exercises allows for more regular practice of statistical principles, ensuring a higher level of student mastery.

5 out of 5 stars Reminded me of my days at Yale............2004-07-12

Before I conceded the bar I went through profound mathematics courses through "Yale's Professor Challenge Program." Dr. Gerbing and his book have brought me back to brilliant years in the statistics classroom; this book brought me up to speed on the innovative computer technology that is premeditated for statistics. I was astounded how thorough this masterpiece is such auxiliary. By extreme, the book went more in depth than the professors at Yale. I would definitely advise this book; it will be sitting on my bookcase in the oval office very shortly.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than expected.......2002-08-16

I bought this book to refresh my memory of the statistics class I took in college and also to master how to use the ubiquitous Excel program for statistical analysis. I was not willing to try any other statistical analysis softwares.

This book exceeded my expectations in both regards. It explains key concepts very well, backed by real-life examples to illustrate their practical aplications using Excel. I have had an easier and more enjoyable time both reviewing my statistics and learning Excel.

5 out of 5 stars Statistics for the rest of us.......2001-06-10

This book accomplishes a great deal - it moves the reader from basic, descriptive statistics to inferential statistics quickly and logically. Each chapter is organized so you can repreat the steps using Excel functions, the Excel Data Analysis Add-in, or using traditional notation. The data are included on a disk, so you don't have to re-key. Also included are Dr. Gerbing's own templates, which include important tools that the Redmond Raiders left out.

I was fortunate enough to have had a course with Dr. Gerbing; I know that he has spent the last five or so years refining his teaching methods, so MBA students can learn AND apply statistics to their business lives. This book is truly a great accomlishment and a contribution to business people who want to use regression analysis - or just have a better understanding of the components that make for solid market research. In an age where we all spend thousands on research studies, it is more than a good idea to know what questions to ask of the syndicated research we're offered, or how to set up the framework for a proprietary study. As a marketing professional, I have found this text very useful. Now - if you can get Gerbing to market the powerpoint slides ...

                        Book Description

The Marketplace of Revolution offers a boldly innovative interpretation of the mobilization of ordinary Americans on the eve of independence. Breen explores how colonists who came from very different ethnic and religious backgrounds managed to overcome difference and create a common cause capable of galvanizing resistance. In a richly interdisciplinary narrative that weaves insights into a changing material culture with analysis of popular political protests, Breen shows how virtual strangers managed to communicate a sense of trust that effectively united men and women long before they had established a nation of their own. The Marketplace of Revolution argues that the colonists' shared experience as consumers in a new imperial economy afforded them the cultural resources that they needed to develop a radical strategy of political protest--the consumer boycott. Never before had a mass political movement organized itself around disruption of the marketplace. As Breen demonstrates, often through anecdotes about obscure Americans, communal rituals of shared sacrifice provided an effective means to educate and energize a dispersed populace. The boycott movement--the signature of American resistance--invited colonists traditionally excluded from formal political processes to voice their opinions about liberty and rights within a revolutionary marketplace, an open, raucous public forum that defined itself around subscription lists passed door-to-door, voluntary associations, street protests, destruction of imported British goods, and incendiary newspaper exchanges. Within these exchanges was born a new form of politics in which ordinary man and women--precisely the people most often overlooked in traditional accounts of revolution--experienced an exhilarating surge of empowerment. Breen recreates an "empire of goods" that transformed everyday life during the mid-eighteenth century. Imported manufactured items flooded into the homes of colonists from New Hampshire to Georgia. The Marketplace of Revolution explains how at a moment of political crisis Americans gave political meaning to the pursuit of happiness and learned how to make goods speak to power.

4 out of 5 stars The roots of the American Revolution.......2007-06-11

The American Revolution was one of the pinnacle events in history. T.H. Breen examines the effect that ordinary citizens had toward influencing middle-class gentility in order to democratize colonial society. THE MARKETPLACE OF REVOLUTION: HOW CONSUMER POLITICS SHAPED AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE extends on Gordon Wood's idea of the common man, i.e., farmers and shopkeepers who were despondent on Monarchical rule, and set out to abandon the so-called "Baubles of Britain." Breen explores events that preceded 1775, and draws an emphasis on material culture and its revolutionary effect on the marketplace as well political influence.

Breen expounds that popular mobilization and trust were pertinent factors that helped to create the movement. One of several events that provoked political protest was the Sugar Act of 1764, which brought the realization to the colonists that they had indulged far too long with British goods, services, and regulations that did not produce fair and equal results. Therefore, as a result of their dissatisfaction, the movement against oppressive parliamentary tactics began. And in general terms, the Sugar Act as well as the Stamp Act eventually led to the Boston Tea Party, one of history textbook's most overwrought narratives, but important link toward consumer and political independence.

Although the issues addressed in THE MARKETPLACE OF REVOLUTION are not new, this is yet another event in American history that may have been neglected. For some unfortunate instances, some events take precedent over others amidst patriotic and national independence sentiment thus creating historical myth. However, this is not a myth but an essential part of the chronology of the American Revolution. From historical accounts by anonymous writers and colonial newspapers, the mention of one of the first occurrences of women participating in political activity, and an the explanation of array of material artifacts that shaped American identity, Breen adds another perspective and understanding of the American Revolution.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, fresh and illuminating.......2005-05-03

I found myself approaching this book as an excellent framework, or skeleton, upon which could be hung all of the other histories and biographies of the Revolutionary period. Here we do not deal so much with great historical figures, but rather with the civic discussions that evolved over time among and between everyday people as they transitioned from British patriots into American patriots. This is a compelling explanation of how and why that happened. As primary sources, Breen draws significantly upon the newspapers, letters, advertisements and broadsides that increasingly circulated among what was, at the time, one of the most literate societies on the planet. I found this to be an outstanding piece of work that contributed greatly to my understanding and comprehension of the forces that shaped the birth of this nation.

5 out of 5 stars A very readable new interpertation of the American Revolutio.......2004-09-10

A strong book written in a very readable style that highlights the contribution of a developing consumer society to the political environment surrounding the revolution.

This book puts the familar events of the revolution in a new (to me) perspective. I had never really considered how incongrous it was for the colonists to attack Tea, but as I was reading those events felt both newly strange and inevitable.

I never felt bogged down in theory or arcane events, and I also felt newly empowered to effect political change through my own consumer choices.

Breen writes a nice book here with lots of detail on colonists as consumers, and how the so-called market revolution impacted America prior to the Revolution. He suggests that this mass consumerism was the bond that tied Americans together and was the reason they were able to unite and rebel in 1775. My concern is that when he does expand upon the idea that this consumerism is what made colonists have something in common and allowed them to act in 1775 as a coordinated community, evidenceis lacking and Breen mostly speculates. It must have been so thus it was so, seems to be Breen's basis for conclusion.

In an effort to halt increasing media competition and decreasing audience shares, Branding has become the new mantra among television station and network executives. Broadcasting & Cable magazine states that Branding is threatening to supplant "synergy" or "convergence" as the queen bee of TV buzzwords. But since few television managers have had any formal training in the substance of media brand management, Branding TV: Principles and Practices goes beyond the jargon of branding to explain the essential principles underlying successful branding and offers many practical strategies to measure, build and manage television brand equity. For instructional purposes, the book pays particular attention to the local commercial TV station and its news franchise.

                                          4 out of 5 stars Business Resumption.......2005-08-12

Having been through the DR process before, I knew there were too many details to leave up to my memory. This guide did help immensley in pointing out many of the small details. IT also provided me with the written reasoning to provide to the business units in justifying DR and why it is so costly and time consuming.

Our DR strategy is well underway. I contribute much of business units cooperation to ideas I was able to convey because of the book.

4 out of 5 stars A good comprehensive approach to your Resumption Plan.......2001-09-05

This is a very comprehensive overview of the entire Business Resumtion planning process. It gives enough detail for you to get started and walk you through the entire process. It is very consistent with other research I have done on the internet in regards to Business Resumption. The book takes you through Business Operations Recovery, Data Center Recovery, and Voice and Data Communications Recovery. I have so far focused on the Business Operations Recovery, but I am sure that the other sections are just as comprehensive. Certainly the best overall resource for Business Resumption that I have found to date. This will be my "go to" manual during this entire planning process.

                                          Book Description

This book serves as an ideal reference for designing and implementing a top-notch disaster recovery plan for advanced telecommunications systems. This is of paramount importance in most businesses where automated systems supporting voice and data communications impact business productivity and profitability significantly. The book's broad scope, easy-to-understand language, and illustrations explain the three essential system components -- data access, phones, and attendant positions -- and discuss the major issues surrounding business resumption planning. The book provides hands-on knowledge and basic principles which are applicable to all highly networked businesses and municipalities.

The book updates and expands upon two earlier Artech House titles: Disaster Recovery Planning for Telecommunications and Writing Disaster Recovery Plans for Telecommunications Networks and LANs.

This is an informative book, and is reasonably interestinggiven the dry subject. I found it more helpful than the Jon Toigobook. It has an emphasis on telecom recovery and redundancies that was missing from Toigo. The book is weaker on IS recovery, and the author is not really well-acquainted with computer security topics, although he discusses them. In spite of this, the book has an excellent little LAN security policy.

The references to Qmodem and Procomm are hints that although this is a 1997 book, it is based on earlier material.

Wrobel includes a number of helpful checklists and interview guides. His "Sample Operating and Security Standards" in Appendix F is a useful section that could serve as a standard for data center physical security. END
