Flat writing makes this book dull, much like a brochure you might get from your brokerage. Too simplistically written to be anything more than a primer for absolute beginners, and even there I think you can do better elsewhere. Later chapters are somewhat useful in explaining the business cycle, but one senses that this book doesn't fulfill its goal.

What promised to be an interesting look at the business cycle is actually rather dull and unoriginal. As simplistic as the writing is, it doesn't really help you understand the business cycle in any detail. Several chapters near the end are pretty good, but otherwise I've learned more from an issue of Forbes.

This book is a must-read for anyone involved in organizational development. And who isn't?

The book looks at the organization as a living thing, in need of balance and natural growth and contraction.
A large part of the book is centered on the individual within the organization and analyses its behavior in relation to others.

Ofmans theory of the Core Qualities is a practical guide to clarify your own irritations, allergies and pitfalls. So, in stead of searching for weaknesses in other people (which can and do irritate you) and learn to try to correct them, it analyses why those weaknesses irritate you, and what you can do to control or change in yourself.

A wonderful look at one woman's experience in the WAC.......2002-07-11

Aileen Kilgore Henderson's "Stateside Soldier: Life in the Women's Army Corps 1944-1945" published by University of South Carolina Press in 2001 is an excellent read.

Between her family members, friends and herself Aileen acquired many documents to put together this book. Some of it was excerpts from her daily diary. Some were letters that went back and forth between family and friends. But Aileen was able to weave them all together to make an interesting story of what it was like being in the Women's Army Corps during World War II.

She started with a look at her birth home, family, jobs, and a desire to serve our country while in her early twenties. The Army almost didn't take her because she was underweight but on 3 February 1944 Private Aileen Kilgore was on her way from Palos, Alabama to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia for Basic Training.

Aileen made entries to her diary almost every day for the next month. She also found time to write letters home and to her friends. I wondered when she found time to write so much having been in the Army myself but perhaps it was our generation's differences.

Her interactions with fellow and sister Veterans helped to make the book very interesting. The letters from her friends who were sent overseas helped to show the differences of the training and day to day life between being stateside and overseas. She showed how friendships here and there made the difference to these women and kept them going when they were ready to give up at times.

Aileen included twenty-four photographs in the book and an Epilogue where she pointed out what became of some of the folks she met so long ago. I would recommend this book for students and adults of all ages. It should be part of our women's studies programs in colleges as well as our military history collections. And it should be included in gift shops of military/Veterans museum as well as on Army installations for all to see. Aileen Kilgore Henderson and the University of South Carolina Press should be proud of this book published in 2001.

How the first women soldiers forged new ground for the rest.......2001-07-26

This book tells how it was for the first women to serve our country. There is happiness, saddness, and even the bittersweet. The Army had to switch gears to provide the "right" sizes for women, which even now we don't always get the right size, so it's the closest men's size. The fact that the training took place in the Midwest in the winter at a converted US Cav. post was fascinating to learn. To bad Fort Des Moines was not conservered for others to see. This was a wonderful and insightful book to read. I recommend it for anyone interested in women's place in military history.

This workbook consisted of short "biographies" of realistic people. The detailed stories of their life supported different personality theories. The book was extremely readable and, should I say, enjoyable. Usually, I don't read texts for fun, but her characters were unique enough that I read ahead.

As a former student of Dr. Maddi's, I found this book to be quite helpful in understanding multiple theorists standpoints. It is an excellent resource for both undergraduate and graduate students. I am currently a graduate student in Clinical Psychology and I highly recommend this text for those interesting in understanding different perspectives in personality functioning.

Throughout my years of teaching personality theories both to undergraduates and graduates, I have not found a better text. This text provides teacher and student with much more than a brief smattering of theorist history and basic concepts. It is a critical analysis of the major theorists' concepts, and it helps readers to think deeply about these theories and to make higher level evaluations of the theorists' reasoning. Its sixth edition now includes more current personality theories, and consistent with past editions, this text also provides readers with relevant research findings. I recommend it highly. My students throughout the years have really loved this book and appreciated the author's approach and level of understanding. Dr. Khoshaba

Esta versión "internacional" es inferior en calidad y contenido al ya clásico del profesor Roger Schroeder (Operations Management). En esta edición, se prima el estudio on-line donde se pueden conseguir más detalles de las empresas analizadas como ejemplo de cada uno de los capítulos. Pero al tiempo, se ha perdido el detalle que tuvo su otra versión (Operations Management - Administración de Operaciones en el mundo hispano).

En cualquier caso, la reducción de contenido, ha facilitado si cabe su lectura y la inclusión de nuevo material a partir de la utilización de hojas de cálculo hace si cabe más sencillos de seguir muchos de los ejercicios.

El libro, sigue cubriendo la totalidad de elementos básicos necesarios para una correcta gestión de las Operaciones, incluyendo el sector Servicios, por la herencia de su anterior versión sigue manteniendo su estatus de libro de referencia.

A very didactic book.......2004-12-02

The book presents a very interesting and didactic structure to study the production systems, with a matrix including the operations flow view (lineal, batch or proyect) and the order production system view (when specifications are defined by customer or defined by the producer). Also devotes a chapter to Service Operations reviewing different approaches. The content has a good balance between theory and practice/exercises, which is supported with bussines cases. In comparison with previous Schoreder book, it does not have the appendices (quantitative methods). I think it is right because there are other books devoted to quantitative methods or operations research topics. Maybe the book needs to develop the supply chain management topic (my comments are about this book first edition (2000)).

A Pathway for Professional Growth.......2003-01-06

This is a great book for the millions of Americans and international professionals whose jobs and professional growth rely on the survival and growth of technology-intensive firms.

Eric Boland and Charles Hofer have made a significant contribution by addressing many paradoxes related to "high technology" firms. Unfortunately, the popular media has done a disservice by using the term `technology' and `information technology' interchangeably. Particularly noteworthy, therefore, is that these authors, bringing complimentary skills, give many lucid examples of technology-intensive firms that are not directly related to the computer or information technology.

Eric Boland helps us with his insight into the inner workings of high-tech firms, and Charles Hofer has added his life-long pioneering of strategic and techno-entrepreneurial perspectives.
