I am currently studying for the CPA exam and I have found this book to be very helpful. I am using the books in conjunction with the Wiley software and I find it best to review the book material before doing the computer multiple choice. Excellent study material!

Decent if you can't afford a review course.......2004-01-23

If you have the funds I highly recommend the Becker Convisor program. After I purchased the set of Wiley books I ended up doing the Becker program instead and found that their programs and materials were vastly superior. There's little in the way of explanation in the Wiley series and what they do explain you will have to struggle through. However, it all comes down to what you can afford. Most firms will pay for all your review expenses (as did mine), but if you have to pay for it yourself and you are short on funds you might want to just struggle through Wiley and save a thousand bucks.

Entertaining!.......2002-08-10

Bottom line: this book is *funny*.

It takes quite a bit to get me to laugh out loud, in real life and particularly in print, but this book did it.

My enjoyment was probably enhanced by the fact that I live in the same city as the author and so have personal experience to back up some of her stories with.

Though it is a fair bit of $$$ for a very short read (a couple hours) and definitely not for one easily offended or searching for serious social commentary, this book is worth reading.

Founded during the Gold Rush years, the Chinese community of San Francisco became the largest and most vibrant Chinatown in America. For those Chinese traveling between the Old World and the New, San Francisco was a port of entry and departure. Many Chinese settled there, forming one of the oldest continuing ethnic communities in urban America.

This is a detailed social and cultural history of the Chinese in San Francisco, relating the development of various social and cultural institutions, ranging from brothels to the powerful “Six Companies.” The book recaptures in vivid detail not only the community’s collective mentalities but also the lives of ordinary people—laborers, theater-goers, gamblers, and prostitutes. In so doing, the author achieves what has been missing from virtually all the historiographic writing on the Chinese in America—he brings to life individual personalities with their varying human qualities.

The book shows the persistence of Chinese social patterns in San Francisco Chinatown, and demonstrates how the community helped shape white America’s view of Asians in general and the development of race consciousness and strife. The author challenges several long-accepted views, such as the myth that the Chinese exodus to California in the mid-nineteenth century occurred mainly because of impoverishment in South China and the notion that the overwhelming majority of Chinese women in San Francisco were prostitutes. He also makes insightful comparisons of Chinese Americans with other ethnic groups.

The book makes imaginative use of a wide range of materials, private and public, fictional and statistical, in both Chinese and English, produced by both pro- and anti-Chinese sources. Among these are Chinese-language newspapers (including their advertisements), handbills, personal diaries, and other cultural productions. This book was the assigned text for a graduate level statistics course I took. It is well written with examples for every technique discussed and lots of exercises at the end of each chapter. I highly recommend it.

One of the best overall business improvement book ever.......2007-08-22

I'm wondering why this book only has one reader (now two) rating it 5 stars.

I've read scores of books about business improvement but most if not all of them focus only in one knowledge area, e.g., The Goal/Question/Metric
Method; Operational Performance Measurement: Increasing Total Productivity; Real Process Improvement Using the CMMI, and others.

I'm still on page 216 as of August 22, 2007 but I don't have to wait to finish this book to say that it's good. The author is the kind of person that leaves no doubt that he knows what he's talking about because I've experienced the same situations - positive and negative - he described in the book. For example, we had a former president who wanted us to be assessed at CMMI Level 2 because it will attract more customers. When he found out how much it would costs, CMMI suddenly slowly became history and we had to find another way to 'improve' which costs less or at no cost (Hello?). In page 187, he actually listed the reasons why organizations get certified (assessed or whatever) and my above example is #3, market advantage.

Most important of all is that he doesn't take an atomistic but rather a holistic approach to business improvement. He stressed the cliche, 'a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.' All the good intentions in the world like 5S can fall like a deck of cards when just one manager's desk looks like a garbage dump.

I only have one complaint though and it's about the book's reference to an article written in Wall Street about China shooting 18 factory managers and workers for shipping poor quality refrigerators. I Googled for it and it seems it was just a prank or hoax article similar to the North Korean's leader destroying the moon. I understand that this book was written in 1995 and it was probably an honest mistake to believe the article was factual. But this doesn't take away from my 5-star rating.

Making Sense out of Improvement Initiatives.......2000-09-10

Harrington does an excellent job of presenting a methodology to understand how all of those improvement 'flavors-of-the-month' can actually work TOGETHER to obtain that rosetta stone business strives for - synergy - in seeking improvement. The book is very well written, easy to understand, and will serve well as both a strategy book and a reference to keep handy when one more 'initiative' arises the next month. Well worth the money. His work makes sense out of improvement intiatives.
