    Book Description

This is a major comparative study of big business in the three dominant European nations across the twentieth-century. In particular the author looks at the character and performance of the major companies in each country at five `snapshot' moments through the century. In so doing he offers a broad and sweeping analysis of European business amply supported by a wealth of empirical data. Cassis' view often challenges widely held assumptions about, for example, entrepreneurial failure in Britain; the relationship between big business and the Nazis in Germany; and the rebuilding of France in the post war period. To fill out his story Cassis looks closely at the role and character of the business elites in each country and their relationship with wider social and political developments. The book will be essential reading for anyone interested in the development of European business and the links between business practice and the wider social and political environment in each country.

            5 out of 5 stars A REFRESHING VIEW.......2000-11-03

After reading several "pro-active" books on online business, it is refreshing to finally find a book that doesn't paint a too rosy a picture of the future of online commerce. The message of this book is: you can make an income from the Internet - supplemental income, at least - but will probably not become a millionaire. The Internet is not here to drive existing businesses out of business, and hence can't claim to take their share of the market and give it to Internet entrepreneurs. It is a very informative book that, as other readers have mentioned, gets your creative juices flowing. The graphic layout of the book leaves something to be desired, however, and some of the URLs are outdated.

            1 out of 5 stars Birdcage material.......2000-07-19

This author is one of those get-rich quick schemers who is using the profits from this load of hogwash to finance his soon-to-be-released informercial making the same bogus claims. Everyone knows there is money to be made on the Net; what we don't know (and subsequently desire to know) is HOW. This book offers a bunch of lame ideas that any dim-witted fool could come up with while reading through the classified section of an income opportunity type magazine. Get real. There appears to be absolutely no original thought work put into this book. Do yourself a favor...if you really want to MAKE money...don't throw it away on this fodder for birdcage bottoms.

4 out of 5 stars Only those who dare truly live.......2000-02-25

This is a great book for those who have no idea of how the Internet works. This book explains the online business world in plain English -- especially good for beginners and foreigners (e.g. Russians). This is a book of business. And if you want to learn about PCs, operating systems and Inernet you'll need additional literature.

Folks, we are living now in a global village with a common marketplace. But this book is too overoptimistic if you really beleive to squeeze some money out of the Internet and get rich soon. But try! And then try again. Only those who dare truly live.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and stimulating.......1999-12-16

This book offers much needed information to the Internet rookie. It is good for those who have no idea how to go about making a living out of the Internet, but if you have some experience in e-commerce/Internet business you should get a book that looks into the matter with greater detail. Ironically, one such book is the author's own "1 BUSINESS 2 APPROACHES (HOW TO SUCCEED IN INTERNET BUSINESS BY EMPLOYING REAL WORLD STRATEGIES)" which I also read and consider a much better book. I suspect that the first part of "121 INTERNET BUSINESSES YOU CAN START FROM HOME" is just a summary of that book.

              Book Description

Here, at last, is straight talk on the realities of job-hunting in the fiercely competitive 1990s. Carreer expert Bob Weinstein's Resumes Don't Get Jobs explodes 16 of the most commonly held myths, platitudes, fantasies, and fallacies about the job search-and replaces them with sound tips and strategies that get results in the real world. Whether they're just starting out, picking up the post-layoff pieces, or looking for a more rewarding and stable line of work, readers will find Weinstein's candid approach to job-hunting refreshing, often humorous, and always right on target. Among the myths he debunks for readers are that: The best jobs are always in the "hidden" job market; High-growth fields are the place to look for substantial compensation and long-term job security; Aggressive networking is the key to a successful job search; The candidate with the highest qualifications always gets the job; Employers hold all the negotiating cards; One should never mention salary requirements during a first interview; Larger firms take better care of their employees; Working long hours guarantees career success. Resume Don't Get Jobs cuts through all the tired cliches, empty buzzwords, and useless theories that look great on paper-but just get in the way when it comes to finding or keeping a good job in today's tough market.

Mr. Weinstein's advice was right on. He gave hard facts and debunked the myth about job hunting. I had this book for several years now. I always go back to it whenever I need to re-evaluate my job and career goals. The book is also easy to read. No gimmicky nor theatrical messages. He got right down to the realities of job hunting. In the past employers took care of their employees. The employees in return gave loyalty. Times have changed. Job seekers and employees now have to take control of their own destiny if they are to survive today tough competitive job market.

                    Book Description

What causes conflict among high-level American corporate executives? How do executives manage their conflicts? Based on candid interviews with over two hundred executives and their support personnel, Calvin Morrill provides an intimate portrait of these men and women as they cope with problems usually hidden from those outside their exclusive ranks.

Personal and corporate scandals, compensation battles, budget worries, interdepartmental rivalries, personal enmities, and general rancor are among everyday challenges faced by executives. Morrill shows what most influences the way managers handle routine conflicts are the cultures created by their company's organizational structure: whether there is a strong hierarchy, a weak hierarchy, or an absence of any strong central authority. The issues most likely to cause conflict within corporations Morrill identifies as managerial style, competition between departments, and performance evaluations, promotions, and compensation.

Among the people whose day-to-day lives we get to know are Jacobs, a divisional executive whose intuitive understanding of the corporate hierarchy enables him to topple his incompetent superior without direct confrontation; Fuller, who through a mix of brains, guile, and connections rises from staff executive secretary to corporate vice president in a large bank; Green, an old-fashioned accounting partner in a firm being taken over by management consultants; and the "Princess of Power," "Iron Man," and the "Terminator"—executives fighting their way to the top of a successful entertainment company.

Unprecedented in its direct access to top managers, this portrayal of daily life and conflict management among corporate elites will be of interest to professionals, scholars, and practitioners in organizational culture and behavior, managerial decision making, dispute, social control, law and society, and organizational ethnography.

All titles in the series include the phone numbers and web sites of all companies discussed. What you won't find are wordy explanations, tales of how someone did it better, or a scholarly lecture on the "theory". Think of them as "Cliff Notes TM" on the subject matter.

Highly recommended!

                                            Customer Reviews:

                                            5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-07-10

The table of contents alone gives an impression of how thoroughly this book covers all the aspects of managing costs in restaurants and food service operations. The book is also well organized and accessible - important concepts are clearly explained, and examples are well chosen. And it is also timely: no matter how attractive or imaginative your restaurant might be, controlling costs is critical to maintaining financial stability in a competitive environment.

Here in a single, engaging volume is everything you are likely to encounter (and the answers too!) in keeping costs down and sales up. A recommended investment.

                                            Book Description

Why do people in a business negotiation settle for less than each of them could and should receive? Two rational players face off in an economic game. Each pursues interests as conventional theory dictates, but all too often, the result is suboptimal. Why do they fail to capture what Dr. Young calls the "cooperative surplus"? Dr. Young proposes that the root of the problem lies in the philosophical assumptions underlying decision and game theory. The common understanding of "economic rationality" is fundamentally flawed, he says. It assumes that rational players are always self-interested and that they will make decisions on the basis of consequences. Arguing that no theory of economic rationality developed from this foundation can lead to the desired prescriptive results, Dr. Young maintains that a successful prescriptive theory of rationality must start from a different premise: the notion of actors as autonomous agents who act over and above their inclinations to express their identity. Dr. Young advances his own notion of economic rationality, then seeks to establish rules by which rational economic players can jointly create a common base for business negotiation. The results of bargaining will then be in equilibrium, and a solution optimal to both sides can be reached. Already praised by philosophers in Europe for its innovative vision and practicality, this book is a must for business executives and attorneys engaged in business negotiations, as well as for their colleagues with similar interests in the academic community.

3 out of 5 stars A new introduction to the classical theory.......2003-10-26

Since there are a lot of books talking about negotiation skills, but ¡§Rational Game¡¨ introduce the negotiation of business world with the exploration of classical theory that I think is quite unique. The author points out a new theory ¡§considered economic rationality¡¨, CER, which is developed from the classical theory. The book let me know that theory is essential in business negotiation and the challenge given to the classical theory like Nash equilibrium and Pareto-Efficiency.

At the first few chapters, there are a lot of philosophies, which the author wants readers to have a basic knowledge about the classical theory that is essential in business negotiation. However, readers (like me) not familiar with the classical theories may not easy to catch up with the idea discussed in the later chapter. Moreover, the use of German case studies for the illustration of the negotiation issue is quite difficult to follow because of the unfamiliarity with the situation of the German privatization. And, it is suggested that the book should use a more ¡§global¡¨ example of business negotiation to illustrate the ideas the author wants to deliver.

Although the content may not be easily understood, the central idea of the book are delivered through the chapter of introducing the CER and how to use it properly. I think that the CER can be well illustrated without going through the philosophy in the early chapters.

One main insight I got from the book is how negotiation may change depending on the interaction with others. And, different people may have different rationality, so that negotiation may be difficult to be measured or predicted accurately by the theory.

Actually Mark Young showed the limitations of the classical theories, like Game Theory, in the real situation of negotiation. I am looking forward for Mark Young to investigate and discuss more about other theories relating to negotiation topic.

5 out of 5 stars For the Serious Negotiation Researcher/Practitioner.......2003-10-20

Because negotiation is a very important topic, ranging from everyday life interactions, to complex business and political deal-making, there is an enormous amount of books on the topic. But this book offers an extremely unique analysis that I have not experienced in any other book.

Books on negotiation are broadly split into two major categories: the "normative" approach to negotiation, which draws on mathematical game-theory, and the "pragmatic" approach, which builds on studies in psychology, management studies and real-life experience. On one hand, normative models based on game-theory are elegant and rigorous, but fail to capture and solve a vast amount of real-world negotiations, due to the oversimplification of the complex mental processes that drive negotiators. On the other hand, pragmatic approaches seem to be ad-hoc, lacking rigour in the analysis of issues, and largely consumer-oriented (Of course, there are exceptions, based on solid empirical studies, such as those coming out of the Harvard Program Negotiation).

What this book offers, however, is the best attempt I have seen to achieve both rigorous normative validity as well as pragmatic prescriptive advice. Mark Young digs as deep as the most fundamental philosophical traditions that underlie the current common conception of rationality (that of utility maximisation), and builds, buttom-up, a new theory of "considered" economic rationality, which forms the basis of his theory of business negotiation. Hence, the book represents a very interesting and unique grounding of negotiation in philosophy, reaching a normatively valid account of negotiation, both descriptive and prescriptive, without falling into the trap of oversimplification that the elegance of mathematical game-theory leads people to.

I recommend this book to any serious negotiator or researcher on negotiation, both normative and pragmatic. I recommend the book particularly to game-theorists, since it would give them very interesting insights about the limitations of game-theory that might eventually lead to a paradigm shift in the study of strategic interaction.
