Book Description
Dictating Development presents a powerful and original analysis of how colonialism has profoundly impacted the varying economic growth of developing nations. While previous studies have focused primarily on the domestic neoliberal policies of government and the political capacity of developing states, Dictating Development argues that economic growth is equally influenced (positively and negatively) by colonial powers. Jonathan Krieckhaus examines both historic colonial influences (on human capital and state structures) as well as contemporary ones (war, market access, and foreign aid). Based on an in-depth study of the regionally diverse nations of Mozambique, Korea, and Brazil, and a statistical analysis of growth in ninety-one countries from 1960 to 2000, Krieckhaus effectively demonstrates that most seemingly domestic political variables are in fact the byproduct of relationships with colonial powers. While not denying the role of neoliberalism as an important factor in development, Dictating Development reveals the roots of these policies: how colonialism influences the very nature of government and societal productivity.
Customer Reviews:
Useful study of the effects of colonialism.......2006-08-07
In this brilliantly original book, Jonathan Krieckhaus, assistant professor of political science at the University of Missouri-Columbia, contends that international factors, like colonialism, wars, market shocks and aid, have huge economic impact. He presents both a statistical analysis of growth from 1960 to 2000 in 91 countries and detailed case studies of Mozambique, South Korea and Brazil.
He shows why policy-centred accounts of economic growth like neo-liberalism are inadequate. He explains, "most economic policies are not robustly correlated with growth in statistical models ... they are less important than initial conditions in determining economic growth."
Krieckhaus sums up colonialism's impact, "a small handful of countries avoided European colonialism, and were hence left free to imitate the European model without suffering European exploitation. Though rarely noted, this was by far the most effective route to economic success over the last forty years. Of the five countries that enjoyed the most rapid economic growth since 1960, it is quite striking that not one was a European colony. Japan, Thailand, and China all escaped Europe's control and used this freedom to construct efficacious states and extensive human capital. Japan then transferred the model to Korea and Taiwan, which also enjoyed rapid growth. Not every country that enjoyed independence from Europe subsequently enjoyed rapid growth, but such independence has historically been a necessary condition for extremely rapid growth.
"Among those countries that did fall under European control, one can further distinguish between early and late colonialism. Late colonialism, beginning approximately in 1885, was substantially more exploitive than its earlier forms. The rapid increase in the geographic scope of colonialism led Europeans to run its territories cheaply, while simultaneously extracting whatever resources they could. Europeans therefore did not attempt to build state capacity or invest in human capital ..."
Krieckhaus shows that British colonies grew no more rapidly than others. Very few children ever got to primary school in the colonies, fewer than 3% in Sierra Leone, Gambia and Northern Nigeria. He notes, "British colonists were particularly reluctant to provide health services, and Sir Hugh Clifford, governor of the Gold Coast, explicitly wrote that the `Medical Establishment [was] maintained almost exclusively for the benefit of the European population.'"
Wars also harm development. Krieckhaus examines South Africa's attack on Mozambique, which displaced a third of the population, killed 600,000 people, and destroyed 40% of the country's assets. Market shocks can have a huge impact, as with the 1980 Thatcher-Reagan interest rate hike, which caused the worldwide slump. International aid too can have major effects: Krieckhaus shows how US spending on its wars against North Korea and then Vietnam funded South Korea's growth.

Book Description
Deemed "the avenging angel of American justice" (Chris Matthews, Hardball), Jeanine Pirro, the famed Westchester County district attorney, presents hard truths about a justice system that she believes coddles criminals at the expense of innocent victims. Taking readers inside her daily battles on behalf of victims -- from the adolescent girl forced to assume wifely duties after her father murdered her stepmother to a hardworking man shot over a parking place -- District Attorney Pirro delivers a bold indictment of the criminal justice system and lays bare the ways in which parents, communities, and the system share complicity in fostering a dangerous environment for our citizens.
With the blunt courage of a woman who has spent her entire career working in a male-dominated world, Pirro demonstrates determination and compassion that will inspire anyone who has ever been a victim -- or a victim's loved one.
Finally, To Punish and Protect includes updated appendixes to help you and your loved ones make smart decisions about safety.

Book Description
istrict Attorney Jeanine Pirro is a crusader, pursuing society's most vicious predators. Irreverent and explosive, Pirro relishes her role as the people's prosecutor, whose mission is not only to take down criminals, but also to restore the lives of their victims. She has fought against an entrenched law-enforcement men-tality not interested in prosecuting crimes against women, children, and the elderly, forcing a review of domestic vio-lence and child-abuse laws. Innovative and often impolitic, Pirro criticizes a system that coddles criminals at the expense of innocent victims. Her most recent crusades have focused on childhood pornography on the Internet, identity theft, and crimes against the elderly. Her passionate commitment to big issues gives her platform national significance and appeal.
Customer Reviews:
Mrs. Pirro makes her case!.......2005-10-14
I picked up this book expecting an exciting "Law and Order" overview of a prosecutor fighting the good fight against the criminals of society. While this book certainly covers that, it also includes heartfelt stories of victims overcoming the odds, and heartbreaking ones of victims being cheated by the system. It shows Mrs. Pirro's efforts to address the wrongs she writes about in this book, especially in regards to crimes against women, children, the elderly and minorities. Remarkably, it's also a pretty easy read - I was able to read it in 2 days. I would definitely encourage you to read this book.
A cry for reformation.......2004-11-07
This book provides a succinct view of the Criminal Justice System, from an angle which many outside of Law Enforcement rarely see: the plight of the victims to endure and relive the horrors brought on them by predators, in their quest for justice. "To Protect and Punish," screams for reform. With each story told, comes the need to advocate for changes in our penal laws which have become outdated.
she's hot and she knows it !!!!!!.......2004-07-19
excellent book ,i kind of had her figured out wrong.rub that lamp and she'll make it happen ..
TERRIBLE ,MUST BE NON FICTION.......2004-07-19
HATED IT ,SEEMS TO BE SELF ENDEARING FOR AN ARROGANT FAN BASE,I DIDNT SEEM TO COME ACROSS ANYTHING RELATING TO HER TRIP TO FL. WHERE SHE WAS SITED FOR ENDULGING HERSELF WITH EXOTIC CARS,ETC.
NORE HER RESEMBLANCE TO THE CHARACTER IN CAPE FEAR,SHE STILL THINKS THE FBI ARE STEALTHALLY STALKING HER,THROUGH THE PHONES, AND WIRES IN HER CAR RADIO,SHE RELIES TO HEAVILLY ON PUBLICITY AND ,WELL, ETC.
Darn good propaganda if it is..........2004-05-07
This was a very good short-intermediate length book, and it seems to have started lots of discussion - her name recognition in far-away places like Canada, California, and the Midwest seems to be huge, at least for a holder of a county office.

Book Description
Central Europe is a paradox. On the one hand it is the heart of Europe, a region still full of the literature, classical music and high culture of the 19th-century; and on the other it is a remnant of the Soviet Empire, economically devastated and socially crippled by decades of Communist Party rule.
Leading historians, specialists in art and literature, economists and political scientists from East and West present a stock-taking ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the bad old days. This multi-faceted picture of a complicated region at the turn of the century is explained by Russian and German commentators with a view from Moscow and Berlin. From contemporary security issues to the prospects for European Union expansion to the deep cultural and historical roots of the countries of the region, this volume of essays will improve your knowledge and understanding.
Customer Reviews:
Firmly at the Core.......2001-01-03
Just as the contributing essayists in this collection prove that the Central European countries are indeed central to Europe's future, editor Christopher Lord proves that this book should be regarded as essential to anyone interested in the topic. Very few books on Central Europe have managed to avoid being dragged into the mire of pre-1989 political disputes. This book focuses on developments in Central Europe since the fall of Communism and asks a group of renowned specialists from all over the region to predict Central Europe's future. The result is a very pertinent work on a dynamic area that is arguably even more geo-politically vital now than it was back in the days when the U.S. and U.S.S.R. started a cold war over it.

Best Car Sales Book .......2006-01-18
I have been in the Automobile Business 25 years and I am the General Manager of a very successful store. This is the best auto textbook I have ever read.
Simple. No meat. Just a basic guide........2004-11-06
This book may help someone who has not ever been in sales of any kind. The basic approach to sales is easy to read and understand. Yet, it lacks the back bone a good automotive sales book needs.
Lacked information.......2004-02-11
I wish I could say smothing better, but this book was not much help to me. It did not offer any practicle ideas that I can implement into my career.
Not much help to me.......2004-01-18
This book did not offer any clear outline for success. Just general statement I have already heard over and over again. All in all it was too long and to general.
Great Book, Terrible Cover!.......2003-05-11
I have been selling cars for over two years now and have read several other books on selling cars, including books by Jack Bennet, Patrick Davis and Joe Girardi. I have also listened to many training videos and read many newsletters from various men like David Martin, Jim Ziegler and Joe Verde. So I have been exposed to a lot of advice. I am doing quite well selling cars but I know I could be doing better, which is why I keep reading advice and reevaluating what I do.
With this said, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of advice and the good insights given by Mark in his book (especially since the cover is awful!). This book is definitely worth reading if you have been selling awhile and are striving to improve. He does a good job of selling the reader on how and why certain things are necessary and effective. Is is a substantial book filled with details and examples, not some brief overview. And it is written by one of us, a man in the trenches, so to speak.

Book Description
This volume revisits the Nobel Prize-winning economist Kenneth Arrow’s classic 1963 essay “Uncertainty and the Welfare Economics of Medical Care” in light of the many changes in American health care since its publication. Arrow’s groundbreaking piece, reprinted in full here, argued that while medicine was subject to the same models of competition and profit maximization as other industries, concepts of trust and morals also played key roles in understanding medicine as an economic institution and in balancing the asymmetrical relationship between medical providers and their patients. His conclusions about the medical profession’s failures to “insure against uncertainties” helped initiate the reevaluation of insurance as a public and private good.
Coming from diverse backgrounds—economics, law, political science, and the health care industry itself—the contributors use Arrow’s article to address a range of present-day health-policy questions. They examine everything from health insurance and technological innovation to the roles of charity, nonprofit institutions, and self-regulation in addressing medical needs. The collection concludes with a new essay by Arrow, in which he reflects on the health care markets of the new millennium. At a time when medical costs continue to rise, the ranks of the uninsured grow, and uncertainty reigns even among those with health insurance, this volume looks back at a seminal work of scholarship to provide critical guidance for the years ahead.

Book Description
The cities of Beijing and Tianjin have had a long and complementary relationship. Tianjin has been central to Beijing's development--just as Beijing has to Tianjin's--mainly due to its strategic coastal location. This book explores how the dual relationship between these cities (despite
occasionally faltering when political ideology has overshadowed economic prosperity) has developed two very similar economies--one as the center of culture and politics, the other as the center of industrialization.

Book Description
The "dirty digger"...a "danger to democracy"--these are some of the less offensive labels given to Rupert Murdoch. He's also been called "media's demon king" and "a slimy character." For a media monarch, he sure gets lots of bad press! But, name-calling aside, Murdoch is universally acclaimed for his business acumen--and lords over a global media empire.
Business the Rupert Murdoch Way takes readers into the mind of the infamous media mogul--and to the heart of his phenomenal success. Readers will discover: the secrets of his deal-making prowess, his views on leadership, his love of risk-taking, his unending ambition (nearing 70, he still works like a man possessed), how he constantly looks to the future, and how he sells his visionary ideas.
Business the Rupert Murdoch Way is part of a new series that charts the rise of business superstars Murdoch, Jack Welch, Richard Branson, and Bill Gates. The Business Way Series looks at their deals, schemes, and dreams, revealing how each planned his career, crushed his competitors, and ended up on top. It supplies both a valuable insight into the ingredients of success and a concise source of important lessons for the next generation of winners.
Other "Business Way" books include: Business the Bill Gates Way (0-8144-7036-X) Business the Jack Welch Way (0-8144-7033-5) Business the Richard Branson Way (0-8144-7035-1)
Customer Reviews:
Concise and Adequate.......2001-12-26
I generally do not like reading thick books. This book is not only ideal for the busy executive, but also for that "lazy student" who has much beter things to do in life. At the end of each chapter, the key take-aways are summarized. It is interesting to note that Murdoch can compromise ethics and journalistic integrity to further his business. He also has a nack of thinking and planning lightyears ahead of his rivals, and can stoop at any level to keep the Chinese happy (BBC, Critical Reporting, scrapping Chris Patten's autobiography et all).
I expected some more.......2000-10-27
The book is very generic on how Rupert Murdoch operates, I was expecting more specifics. The book is good though, if you just grab the 10 steps the author mentions.

How you can get your career and business going like someone who is Rich, Famous and successful!.......2007-04-17
I have read so many marketing books that I can't keep up, I am writing a series of marketing books at the moment (Mosquito Marketing Series) because I have read so many books, tried so many marketing techniques and been very successful with my marketing for over 10 years now bringing myself and my businesses national publicity on many occasions. I picked up this book to see if I had missed anything and if you don't read this book, you are missing something! FULL of great ideas, motivational comments and examples of tried and true examples. I would highly recommend this book, it is full or helpful information, very well laid out, and with its little stories added in the side bar it is like a book within a book.
The meaning of life according to Ray Simon.......2006-04-10
If you can only read one marketing book this year, read this one. Beyond marketing, beyond business, it's a book about how to make life more adventurous and surprising for yourself and others. A must read for anyone committed to serving others and making the most of themselves.
Ray Simon weaves various fields together, from psychology to astrology, in a humorous, enlightened "how-to" book that will help you greatly in getting your product or service into the life of those who can make it happen. Full of biographical snippets that will delight you, the book provides a really good blend of principles and examples. Another great benefit is that you've probably employed some of the tactics mentioned by Ray Simon at one point or another, so you'll be able to draw from your own life experience to tap into the spirit of mischief marketing.
All in all, this book is an invitation to be happier, more intelligent, more creative, more giving, more clever, and a lot more humorous than you already are. Buy it now and give it as a gift!
Martin
So Funny!.......2003-11-18
This is such a funny book!It totally cracked me up.
And it tells you stuff nobody else ever does. Like all the tricks famous people pulled to get to be so famous. Blair Witch, Ben Franklin, Mother Teresa,Steven Spielberg, George Washington , I can't remember all the rest, but you the picture right?... so many, from all walks of life. Ben and Jerry's, Home Depot! It's so cool. Anyways thats my opinion.
-H.
Wonderful, Shocking Book.......2001-02-22
Who would suspect that so many famous people did such weird things to get started? I'm amazed that nobody has written a book like this before. It's almost unbelievable.
Wonderful reading. Oh yes. Oy! Such a book!
About Mischief Marketing.......2000-10-11
First let me state that I give the printed version of this book 4 stars, but the online version - the *uncensored* version, would get the 5th star, though I prefer to rate things by four leaf clovers, because I'm Irish, and...well, by whatever scale one may use, the results would be the same. That having been said, Mischief Marketing has opened up a way of looking at things for me - which had been there all along, but was fractured in the process of aging. And I'm not referring to any inner child schtick either! Where talking about things that are attributed to the child because that is where they are most often seen. What is so strange about having fun and enjoying what you pursue? Or feeling some hope against the machine that some voice (be it yours or someone elses) may be heard, which otherwise wouldn't? This book has renewed my hope and drive to degrees I don't think I'm even fully aware of yet. And I have begun utilizing many of the tactics with other artists as well.
It's a wonderful, funny, educational, inspirational and ultimately absolutely essential book. Thank you Mr. Simon.

Book Description
Authoritative, original essays focus on how the seven East Asian economies labeled "miracle economies" just five years ago by the World Bank got into the deep crisis which emerged in 1998. Why didn't economists foresee the sudden and catastrophic events of 1997-98? The contributors, fifteen specialists from eight countries, examine the origins, lessons and future path of the crisis and attempt to determine if there is anything to salvage of the "East Asian Miracle."
