            1 out of 5 stars No way.......2001-06-19

This book is not about a party planning business, as the title suggests. It is about selling products via a party plan (Tupperware, Magic chef, et al)

The actual market for this book is very limited and even then, most of the parent companies provide most of the information included here in their own training. Not worth the price to much of anybody!

3 out of 5 stars TITLE IS MISLEADING UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT "PARTY PLAN" IS.......1999-10-09

This book is for the "PARTY PLAN" business, not party planning. I thought that it was a book about how to start your own Party Planning business. I got the book and was disappointed because it is a guide to being a saleswoman. Like Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, etc. It is about merchandising a particular product and trying to teach you how to get bookings. It's not actual Party & Event Planning like I had anticipated. It is good if you are intended to be and Avon, Mary Kay, or Pampered Chef woman but not if you are looking to plan your own Event Planning Business.

              Book Description

To all corporate executives: Warning! There are now thousands of aggressive, ambitious young journalists out there who desperately want to become the next Bob Woodward, the next Mike Wallace or the next Seymour Hersh. And they won’t mind getting there by destroying your company and marching over its corpse. More and more often, U.S. companies must deal with these so-called “investigative” reporters, who often get inspiration for their news stories from two of Corporate America’s greatest antagonists: plaintiff attorneys and social activists. Traditional PR says you must kowtow to these media thugs. Hardball PR says you can fight back—and win. Read this book. The life you save could belong to your company.

                    Book Description

What explains the national economic success of the United States, Britain, Germany, and Japan? What can be learned from the long-term championship performances of leading business firms in each country? How important were specific innovations by individual entrepreneurs? And in the end, what is the true nature of capitalist development?

The Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Thomas K. McCraw and his coauthors present penetrating answers to these questions. Creating Modern Capitalism is the first book to explain for a broad audience the interconnections among technological innovation, management science, the power of entrepreneurship, and national economic growth. The authors approach each question from a comparative framework and with a unique triple focus on national economic systems, particular companies, and individual business leaders.

Above all, the book focuses on how specific entrepreneurs influenced the economic success of their countries: Josiah Wedgwood and Henry Royce in Britain; August Thyssen and Georg von Siemens in Germany; Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan, and the two Thomas J. Watsons in the United States; Sakichi Toyoda, Masatoshi Ito, and Toshifumi Suzuki in Japan.

The product of a three-year collaborative effort at the Harvard Business School, the book combines cutting-edge scholarship with a finely tuned sense of the art of management. It will engage general readers as well as those with a special interest in entrepreneurship and the evolution of national business systems.

The book covers the history of capitalism in great detail outlining the major turning points and how it has evolved to shape modern capitalism. A definite must read for whoever is interested in the nature of a capitalist society.

5 out of 5 stars Harvard MBA reviews his Professor's Works.......2000-05-06

This is an excellent collection of articles describing people, firms, and nations that succeeded in modern capitlism. Looking a the four most successful economies of the past two centuries: England, US, Germany, and Japan- Prof. McCraw's expertly edited and coherent collection of articles gives the reader a flavor of what made for great success in the capitalist economy. Each country has three articles: a firm, an entrepenure, and the country itself for a total of 12 articles each written by true experts. McCraw's understanding of capitlism is somewhat skewed toward the modern, however on the whole the book is extremely balanced. Of partiuclar note, is Prof. David Moss's article on the Deutch Bank which dicusses the succcess, failures, rewards, and dark side of capitalism.

4 out of 5 stars Help for us in everyday conflict.......2007-01-09

At fewer than 150 pages, Beyond Machiavelli packs in enough ideas and advice to keep you busy for months to come. Fisher et. al. offer insights on how to better understand the people we are in conflict with. Also, Beyond Machiavelli shows us how to be able to influence people we disagree with, and how to legitimately analyze the situation to move towards problem solving. Regardless of what system or social structure you are in, there are ample skills that can be applied to face a multitude of situation. Though the majority of the illustrations in Beyond Machiavelli are from the political arena, the principles of the book can be used over a broad spectrum.

4 out of 5 stars The negotiaton explained.......2002-02-24

Very decent book, with loads of good cases. It helps you understand the other side's position and options, and guides you to 'reasonable' negotiation.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Conquering Conflict.......2001-08-23

How many times we have been in a conflict with others may it be of a personal or business in nature. I find this text extremely useful in punctuating the loopholes and pitfalls to avoid in a conflict and means to manage it. When in a conflict we are always trying to send a message to the other party suggesting them that there is something else they should be doing. The text will help in the appropriate way to transfer this message across.

To identify the root cause of a conflict Fisher suggests that one must not be responsive but purposive. As an example when two children are fighting the adult who breaks them apart may ask "why" they hit each other. To this the most likely response may be "because he hit me first". But that response only explains the cause of the fight not its root cause.

Another key ingredient suggested by Fisher is keeping in perspective the situation and mind set the other side is facing. In a ball game it may be easy to not agree with a team change decision a coach has made. But understanding the dynamics and pressure faced by him, we are then in a better position to critique if the decision made was correct. If we had a chance him our opinion this added perspective can aid us to be sensitive to his situation.

Fisher believes that understanding how others view a conflict is knowledge that gives us strength. It enhances our ability to influence them. Through exploring and motivations leading up to a conflict we can increase our understanding of where their perceptions comes from.

No matter how much we disagree with someone we need influenced. It is extremely important that we maintain a level of dialogue; so that we may not push the party away and be faced with a situation we never wish to face. After the overthrow of the shah of Iran in 1979, the U.S unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the government for a hundred executions conducted by the new government. Ironically the U.S had overlooked the thousands of executions of political opponents done during the Shahs regime. It was in the best interest of the U.S to keep Iran engaged and maintain some working relationship to avoid Iran being driven to the Soviet block and preventing the hostage crisis.

This is not a book of answers and solutions to conflicts. The tools suggested in this book are intended to ask or simulate better questions. Better questions are not about who is right or who is wrong, or about one-hot solutions, but the process of dealing with conflicting views about right and wrong and for dealing with the inevitable changes that lie ahead. For e.g. Fisher suggests that instead of starting with the question "What shall I do?" you might want to start with such questions as "What would I like someone else to do?" and "What could I do that would make it easier for them to do it?".

5 out of 5 stars If You Liked Getting to Yes...........2001-08-12

If you liked Getting to Yes, you'll appreciate this one too. To me, this book is really about how to think clearly about complex situations. As the authors demonstrate, too often we don't think through the long term consequences of our actions. We react to the past without thinking how our actions will then be interpreted by those we seek to influence. Great book.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Too condensed.......2001-04-01

This book is simply too condensed for a novice to negotiation to get anything useful out from it.

                                            Book Description

From the three perspectives of geography, economic policy, and ideology, this work examines corporate capitalism under the tsarist and late Soviet regimes. Thomas C. Owen discovers a remarkable history of thwarted effort and lost opportunity. He explores the impact of bureaucratic restrictions and reveals the entrepreneurial capabilities of Russia's corporate founders from various social groups as well as the prominence of Poles, Germans, Jews, Armenians, and foreign citizens in the corporate elite of the Russian Empire and its ten largest cities. The study stresses continuities between tsarist and late Soviet periods, especially in the persistence of anti-capitalist attitudes, both radical and reactionary. A provocative final chapter considers the implications of the weak corporate heritage for the future of Russian capitalism.

                                                Book Description

In order for free expression to be meaningful, there must be forums available for individuals wishing to express themselves. Despite an increasing number of broadcast stations, there are still far more people wishing to speak than there are licenses. This book examines the marketplaces for free speech and proposes means by which speaking opportunities can be increased. The author even proposes the creation of broadcast access channels. Unlike access proposals of the past, these channels would respect the rights of broadcasters and cable operators by not requiring them to accomodate speakers, but, rather, by establishing "electronic soapboxes," open to speakers on a first-come basis, reflecting the traditional speech making in parks and on street corners. Caristi begins his work by examining the various freedom of expression theories. He asserts that of all the values protected, free expression as self-fulfillment is the most expansive and should be the approach adopted whenever possible. Through legal history and analysis, the book examines the cases and commentary relevant to public forum and broadcast cases. Red Lion, Tornillo, and their progeny are examined for rationale in regulating media. Despite claims to the contrary, scarcity is seen as an appropriate regulatory approach for broadcasting. This book is a valuable contribution to the discussion of first amendment and communication policy, and it should be of interest to students in communication, law, and public policy.

This book is easy on the eyes. There are a lot of cartoon type drawings to illustrate the authors points. It's almost like reading a cartoon magazine except for the fact it's over 140 pages.

What I would use this book for is an elementary understanding of building an MLM organization for which some sound principles are laid out in the book. However, you won't learn any "how to's".

This book is a great beginners book to help you to understand the basic fundamental principles of network marketing.

                                                      I hope this helps!
