In this volume Dr. Chiang introduces readers to the most important methods of dynamic optimization used in economics. The classical calculus of variations, optimal control theory, and dynamic programming in its discrete form are explained in the usual Chiang fashion--with patience and thoroughness. The economic examples, selected from both classical and recent literature, serve not only to illustrate applications of the mathematical methods, but also to provide a useful glimpse of the development of thinking in several areas of economics. Outstanding features include: (1) written with clarity and a comparable level of expository patience; (2) reinforces discussions of mathematical techniques with numerical illustrations, economic examples, and exercise problems; (3) presents a simple problem with a well- known solution in several different alternative formulations in the numerical illustrations; and (4) explains economic models in a step-by-step manner (from the initial construction through the intricacies of mathematical analysis to its final solution).

Very Good Introduction.......2005-03-23

This book provides an introduction to the advanced subject of dynamic optimization in an easy to comprehend manner. For students with no previous background in the subject, it is the best book in the market.If you are familiar with Chiang's Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics, you can expect the same level of comfort. There are plenty of examples in the text and all the aspects of the subject are covered. A valuable book to own and deserves the 5 stars.

Learn the stuff before writing a textbook.......2002-08-30

This book may be great for students. I has many good examples, is well written and generally looks good. HOWEVER, for anyone who actually knows optimal control theory it is clear that the book has several flaws. The worst example is the section on transversality conditions in infinite horizon problems. Chiang simply has no idea what he is talking about.

Better than any of the courses I had attented........2001-02-22

The book of professor Chiang is not simply a good introductory text to dynamic optimization in the continuous-time form, but also provides a tight explanation of the related original economic models. It is better than any of the courses most people had attented before. I wish a similar book will appear soon, developing dynamic optimization tools, and especially optimal control in the discret-time form.

Very few people have the quality of expressing ideas and concepts with such clarity and simplicity as Professor Chinag has done. If you are new to dynamic optimization, particularly calculus and variation and optimal control theory you had better start with this treatise.

The finite element, an approximation method for solving differential equations of mathematical physics, is a highly effective technique in the analysis and design, or synthesis, of structural dynamic systems. Starting from the system differential equations and its boundary conditions, what is referred to as a weak form of the problem (elaborated in the text) is developed in a variational sense. This variational statement is used to define elemental properties that may be written as matrices and vectors as well as to identify primary and secondary boundaries and all possible boundary conditions. Specific equilibrium problems are also solved. This book clearly reveals the effectiveness and great significance of the finite element method available and the essential role it will play in the future as further development occurs.

A Reference Series for those who create & optimize NN's........2000-10-04

Neural networks have seen an explosion in interest and application in the last 10 to 15 years, when they evolved from research on artificial intelligence One can find books on diverse subjects such as finance, medicine, and any physical or theoretical science with significant sections devoted to the use of neural networks in that discipline. I conducted a non-scientific survey (in 1 minute or less) of the importance of the subject matter by asking Amazon.com how many books it listed on subjects I thought might be equal in timing and importance. The results (below) imply a significant interest in neural networks, from readers and authors alike. My list does not report on the number of books that contain chapters or significant sections on neural networks.

Optimization Techniques is the second in a seven (7) volume series from Academic Press on neural network systems techniques and applications. The series presents itself as the first all-inclusive treatment of the subject matter and is aimed at a wide array of potential readers: researchers, students and practitioners in industrial, mechanical, electrical, manufacturing and computer engineering. As such, one would expect the series to be appealing to a more select audience of research workers focused on creating and improving neural networks, and not so much to those of us who use the applications and interpret the output. This seems to be the case.

This Volume in the series, claiming to be the first comprehensive treatment of optimization techniques including system structure and computational methods, presents the work of nineteen (19) contributors as a synthesis of what is known about neural networks and optimization techniques at the present time. The book is divided into ten (10) sections, each addressing different topic areas. I would not suspect that more than one or two sections would be of interest to the reader in an applied research field.

I found the sections on the learning of nonstationary processes and neural techniques for data analysis to be informative and well written. I did not anticipate having a warm feeling of confidence in my level of understanding the first time I read these sections. I am confident, however, that I know which direction current and future research will take on neural networks.

Great ecommerce introduction... bad code.......2007-10-03

Like others already said, the sample site doesn't work very well. That's why i substract one star from this book. On the other hand, this book introduced me to many concepts about ecommerce sites and how to implement them. You can see what the authors did and then code yourself the solution... you WILL have to even if you do not want to... because like i said before, the site doesn't work at first hand. A must have if you are getting into the web development industry... specially if you are going to work with e-commerce sites.

Book: Unfinished Exercise for the Reader.......2004-05-29

Despite some strengths, this book has a number of problems. It's a shame because it could have been a sterling diamond in the book racks. The code isn't supported by the publisher (see previous reviews) so basically you have to figure out how to get the code to work on your own. There is no example website for the book. One wonders why the publisher and/or authors completely abandoned the project. Another minus is - why did they choose to use strongly typed data sets (being a somewhat advanced .NET topic) to hold data without an adequate explanation of theory beforehand? You'll have to go to other books to get adequate preparation for this topic. On the plus side, this is a fairly advanced e-commerce application similar to what you'll find in the real world. Some of the DB table designs and stored procs are decent. Therefore, studying the code and text will give you some ideas of what you might do in real-world application development. The best description of this book is: "This Book has been left as an unfinished exercise for the reader." But as a complete, comprehensive, finished work this book falls short, and whatever you do, don't buy it new!

Code can be made to work.......2004-03-21

The code was written with a late beta of .NET. It is strange how the code and website have not been updated, but in about 3 hours I was able to get the code to compile and run. There are numerous 3rd party products now with more features than this codeset and cost maybe $99, but if you want to make a go of it, like I said, you can get the code to work.

Do not be fooled by the description of this book. It describes features that do not exist...
This book does not contain working code, and the example site has been broken for more than two years, from the date of the first review. There are files missing which are essential for the example code to work. The contact info for the authors is invalid also...
THIS BOOK IS NOT SUPPORTED BY THE PUBLISHER. I have emailed the publisher several times over the last two months, and I have gotten no response. They should not continue to sell this book...
I believe the only positive reviews here are either bogus or based on the positive impression the book gives before you really get into it and discover all of the flaws that make it unusable.

I bought the book and followed the instructions in the book, unfortunately, like others said that the code does not work. I tried the url listed in the book, but what I got is the error message! Lots of Information -- Limited Perspective.......2001-06-27

The economic perspectives of this book's essays see globalization as consisting of capital investment, FDI, oil politics, manipulation of resources into exports, and macroeconomic stimulation. Hence, it is a lot of 'old economy' mentalities that appear new because of the relatively new autonomy of Central Asian countries. Import and export policies are not necessarily indicative of a "new global economy," having been an essential aspect of economics for millenia. Although economic liberalization is paid a lot of attention and lip-service, statist policies are presented as the primary approaches to economic development. There is little discussion of microeconomic phenomena and the importance of domestic economic stimulation. Environmental issues don't merit a single reference in the index. Political liberalization is also dutifully ignored.

Investment in the oil infrastructure is heavily emphasized, but the viability of real and substantial amounts of oil in the ground has yet to be proven in Central Asia. Access to viable markets is also dubious for that reason.

Real economic vitality in Central Asia will ultimately hinge less on building airports and pipelines than on stimulating open and viable economic activity among the domestic populations there. Economic interaction of a self-sustaining nature is a far better path to political reform, political stability, viable tax bases (rather than dependencies on FDI), and satisfaction of demographic conflicts.
