Book Description
Shows how to use both ETFs and E-Minis for high-powered results
Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are a remarkable new tool for trading and investing in broad market segments or narrow sectors. ETF trading volume and asset growth continue to soar at record levels. Ideal for speculating in and hedging as well as long-term investing in the broader markets, these index products work together to diversify and balance any global portfolio. Now, one of the top executives (and experts) in the industry reveals the intricacies of the products, how to use them, and what the future holds. Readers will get sample index portfolios and strategies for all market participants--ranging from the short-term trader to the long-term investor; and from the risk taker to the conservative investor.
David Lerman (Chicago, IL) is the Senior Director of Equity Index Products Marketing at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. He has traveled around the globe on behalf of the CME, giving seminars and workshops to retail and institutional audiences, including pension funds, corporations, banks and brokers on risk management/trading using equity index futures and options.

E-BOOK HAS PROBLEMS.......2003-12-15
I recently purchased the e-book since I'm located overseas (in Saudi Arabia) and postage is sometimes more than the cost of the books. It also takes in excess of 3 weeks to get mail here from the States. I purchased and downloaded the e-book and was all set to print. I could only print the first 14 pages and then was notified by the Abode print driver that I could not print any more pages that day. After doing some checking I found that permissions were set by the publisher that only allowed printing 35 pages every 7 days - what a rip off!!! By the time I can finally print the last pages we'll be celebrating July 4th 2004 (well maybe not that long). But the idea that printing is being restricted after purchase is outrageous. I have written Amazon to inform them. At the very least the publisher should advise of this practice BEFORE YOUR PURCHASE. I will not purchase any e-books until this practice by Wiley is discontinued.
Outstanding for biginners in ETFs and Emini futures.......2002-12-20
This is a well written book and easy to read about the history of ETFs and Emini futures. The author describes the creation of the likes of SPY, QQQ, SMH. Why is it important to know about these instruments, how they get created, who manages them, their cost effective investing over regular mutual funds. He goes in great detail by listing all EFTs available today with their tickers as well, till the point I don't need to keep going to the internet. I started trading the EFTs for profit and for hedging in particular after reading this book. The introduction about the Emini futures is useful and gave me a good start in this subject.
good book for beginner.......2002-09-02
good book for beginner who wants to know about ETFs (like me). helped me in reviewing my holdings.

Excellent Read.......2002-05-10
I happened to pick up this wonderful book while in Chicago recently. In browsing through the introductory pages, I smiled at the references to both Warren Buffett and Jack Bogle. Now here, I thought, is someone who "gets it". Buy this book and read it. It is worth every penny. Amidst today's cacaphony of financial marketing, Lerman's voice emerges from these pages with refreshing honesty, simplicity, and reason.
Those trying to educate themselves in the area of personal finance and investment should read this book carefully. For conservative investors as well as for those inclined to a bit of speculation on occasion, this book is very well written and informative.
Following up on the themes that, in the long run (emphasis), economic fundamentals drive returns; that larger, well-established, actively traded markets are, over time (emphasis), highly efficient; and that costs matter greatly when assessing net performance over extended periods; Lerman does an excellent job of explaining the rapidly developing role of ultra low-cost, exchange traded funds (ETFs) as part of any core indexing program. At the same time, he carefully exposes the many hidden (and, unfortunately, rising) costs lurking in most mutual funds today.
Still, Lerman wisely acknowledges, in the short term things can and do happen. While over long periods of time certain markets may be extremely efficient, the difference between that and what may happen in the near term is, as Buffett points out, the difference between day and night. After all, we are inescapably human, and fear and greed will never be completely expunged from our collective psyche. Sudden, unexpected events can result in major market and/or sector security specific swings, and it is during those times that patient investors as well as prudent speculators can occasionally reap outsized returns. Here again, ETFs (as well as the related E-Mini Stock Index Futures for more enterprising individuals) can help.
In short, by building a long-term, broadly-based core portfolio around low-cost ETFs and perhaps a few well-chosen securities and/or money managers (particularly in less efficient markets), and by then (for the enterprising investor) complementing such a portfolio with the occasional, more speculative foray, whether by utilizing ETFs, E-Mini Stock Index Futures, or other means, an intelligent individual should be able to navigate successfully today's choppy financial waters.
An introduction for beginners.......2002-02-13
If you are new to the world of ETF's and E-Mini index futures, this book will shed much light on these instruments. If, however, you are a trading veteran with knowledge of these markets, you have no need for this book as it simply introduces the instruments in basic format and details.

Customer Reviews:
The best resume book.......2001-08-12
If you like things taking you "step by step" and providing examples along the way, you'll love this book. I hated other books blabbing on and on about marketing yourself and speaking abstractly. This one started page one with (I paraphrase) "Okay, let's make a big ol' list of edu/experience/skills..etc broken down into categories. You'll pick from this list to build your resume for a specific job.
Sounds like "duh", right? But that is the great thing about it. It was clear easy steps on what to do and in what order. Take a little bit on at a time, and before you know it, you've got a winning resume! Don't waste your time with the other books. You wont get anywhere. This book "holds your hand" in a good way.

Funny stuff.......2001-05-11
I was in a class Lefever taught, so I was skeptical of the reasons he assigned this book. However, it turned out to be one of the best reads I ever had in college. I read the book in a week. The title says something about reality, so prepare yourself. This book shows the good, the bad, and the ugly of the restaurant business. Oh, and the funny too.
Negative, cynical & pessimistic junk!.......2000-07-31
As an owner/professional in a hospitality business I HOPED to find some lessons and guidance in this book...I found a burned out husband/wife team who could do nothing more than share miserable annecdotes. No positive lessons, no gainfull knowledge, no advantage from experience. If you want to be talked out of owning a restaurant, or any other small business, this is the book for you. Just don't judge your fellow man too harshly, after reading this book you'll have little faith in the goodness, the potential or the opportunity in business and people.
An excellent and funny look at managing restaurants.......1996-07-04
Restaurant Reality is one man's (later one husband and wife's) journey through all levels of restaurant management. Drawing upon a lifetime of experience in restaurant management, Lefever's anecdotes give the reader a great sense of the ups and downs, sometimes too many downs, of buying, owning, and managing a successful restaurant. If you are interested in an eye-opening expose on what the textbooks don't tell you about owning your own restaurant, take a look at "Reality." If anything, it is good f

Customer Reviews:
Rip-off pamphlet (not a book).......2001-07-22
Poor and unethical. This grocery store horoscope size pamphlet tells how to cheat the Dept. stores, too. Must do this every month. Book not recommended. 1/2 star. Hey Northridge, CA... your right around the corner from me!
Whats the first reviewer talking about........2000-10-06
I read the book and it tells you exactly how to accomplish what the title says. I highly recommend it.
I Wouldn't Recommend This Pamphlet Even @ Gunpoint.......2000-07-07
This "book" consisted of only 24 pages, and the pages were off-centered at that. Nonetheless, I have always thought that one should never judge a book by its cover. After reading the pamphlet, I knew that the quality of the pamphlet (or rather, lack therof, was consistant with the content).
I could have easily put together a more informative pamphlet, with better information (e.g., Credit Card companies that actually offer a 20-25 day grace period on Balance Transfers). Now this is the kind of information that I would pay for, and that quite frankly, I thought that I would be getting from this selection.

Book Description
FINANCE FOR EXECUTIVES: MANAGING FOR VALUE CREATION, 3e is ideal for the future manager or experienced executive who recognizes the importance of using financial information to maximize firm value. Respected authors Gabriel Hawawini and Claude Viallet have translated their wealth of experience into a concise, analytically sound introduction to financial management that is neither too simplistic nor too theoretical. Based on modern finance principles, the book presents the most recent financial data and latest references with a level of practicality and rigorous analysis appropriate for today's experienced executive - without complicated formulas that have no direct application to decision making. Each chapter is self-contained - providing ultimate flexibility for teaching and making the book an excellent source for reference or self-learning beyond the traditional classroom. This book is perfect for executive education, executive MBA courses, or any course where you want to translate theory into practice or use a case approach. A strong problem-scenario approach presents concepts within the context of financial management problems that executives commonly face. In addition, consistent case studies analyze the same set of companies throughout the text to provide a common thread that reinforces learning.
Customer Reviews:
Readable , practical and ..maybe the best..........2004-02-10
In my humble opinion ,this maybe one of the best books of Finance... It is practical, direct to the point, the examples are clearly stated so that you can follow the concepts and central ideas and most important : you really can understand everything in an easy way....no sweat here..
You can apply almost everything in this book to your daily practice. No matter your years of experience , FFE will refresh you and reinforce your knowledge. I always have this book on my desk for reference.
Excellent for Corporate Finance practitioners.......2000-08-08
‚Finance for Executives' is invaluable for everybody who needs to analyse companies and wants to know whether investment, financing or business decisions create value. It is written very clearly and is therefore easy to understand. It offers plenty of practically relevant examples, mostly based on one company which is being analysed in its different aspects throughout the whole book. Moreover, every chapter finishes with review problems (including solutions) and useful references. Some chapters offer appendices with mathematical proofs or additional in-depth analysis. - You will not be satisfied with this book if you are looking for a scientific, theoretical text. However, your expectations will be exceeded if you are a practitioner who wants to make an impact in a consulting or investment banking environment. - What does make this book so special? After working through it, you will be able to easily put into practice what you read.
Great overview in simple terms and easy to follow.......1999-07-30
This book is great as an introduction to the major concepts of finance. If you are looking for an advanced refernce book, this is not the one. But if you want to refresh your memory, or want a quick overview of concepts and methods, I can't think of a better book.
A readable, relevant reference for every business person........1998-09-23
Every business owner, executive, accountant, banker and maybe even your lawyer should have this valuable book on their desktop! The authors demystify the art of finance and suggest pragmatic approaches and solutions for every day capital uses and needs. This attractive and attractively priced book is written in an innovative way, making it a useful quick desktop reference as well as an MBA level finance text. The glossary by itself is worth the price of the book. How astounding that the authors are both French, yet write with more clarity in English than any American finance writer I have read of late! Vive la readability!
Exceptionally clear and up-to-date text on Corporate Finance.......1998-08-31
This is an exceptionally clear book that provides an up-to-date treatment of Corporate Finance that is accessible and practical. A must have!

Book Description
Lesikar and Flatley's, Basic Business Communication (BBC): Skills for Empowering the Internet Generation, has long been known as a solid introductory business communication book that gets to the writing skills sooner than most other texts and gives students true 'how-to' skills in all areas of business communication. It has solid examples, and is both consumer-and service-oriented. Its strength has also been its use of margin notes, cartoons and photos that relate to the concepts and use of cases. Recent editions have established BBC as truly cutting edge; it was the first text in the market with PowerPoint as part of its package, the first to have an online chapter, and with the 9th Edition is now the first to offer writing tips and templates for PDAs (personal digital assistants).).

Customer Reviews:
The book for me.......2003-07-01
I bought this book used and except for the "quality used book" stickers permanently stuck to it, it is great. It's a 2003 edition that I paid a lot less for than if I'd bought it new and it's helping with the class I needed it for. So all's good!
Superb Business Communication Book!.......2002-02-03
I would highly recommend this book for anyone going into the business world. It addresses how to communicate with your boss, with your peers, and even how to interview. Scot addresses typical situations like not meeting deadlines, needing more resources on a project, etc... and how to ask for what you need. In communicating with a boss you want him to know things are under control and you can do the job. With a peer you want him on your side as a team player, so you may want to appear helpless. It even shows you the spacing and how to format letters and write memos. I love how this book shows you how to take a weak sentence and make it more direct. I've read many of these types of books but this one addresses all the business communications. Excellent Book!

Book Description
'I believe this book will be a benefit to all those who are involved in, or are interested in, the cruise industry'
David Dingle, Commercial and Corporate Director P&O Cruises
* The first overall study of the industry
* Looks at the practical aspects but is underpinned by theory
* Focuses on sociological aspects to explain the current growth
Cruises are traditionally thought of as luxury holidays for the pampered few but 'The Development and Growth of the Cruise Industry' exposes the myth and gives readers an understanding of their importance in the travel market. The book covers the various types of cruises (fly cruising, cruise & stay, special interest cruises for example), the types of ships (design to green issues) and the motivation of passengers (quality versus price). It takes a forward looking approach assessing trends, past 2000 with the probable polarisation of the market, its growth prospects and potential limiting factors.
Contents:
Cruising in context; A history of cruising; Market aspects; Cruising areas; Design philosophies; The economics of cruising; Anatomy of a cruise; The ecology of cruising; Niche cruising; The future.
This book is ideal for 2nd and 3rd year Tourism Undergraduates, HNC, BTEC and HND Travel and Tourism Students. As one of the first academic books on the subject it will also give tourism practitioners a real understanding of the issues and practicalities involved.
Roger Cartwright is the Deputy Head of the Faculty of Business Management and Computing, Perth College (a member of the University of the Highlands Project), Scotland.
Carolyn Baird is the Head of the School of Tourism and Hospitality, Perth College (a member of the University of the Highlands Project), Scotland.

Sound financial advice..........2000-07-10
This is a good, clear, concise guide to managing your finances. By reading the book, I was able to answer questions that had been puzzling me previously. The author's use of clear charts, graphs and colorful illustrations make his points stand out and grab your attention. If you seek to grow and protect your investments this is a good book to have by your side. I would rank this among my five favorite books on financial topics.
