Manufacturer: Westview Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0813398487 |
Book Description
With the loss of Soviet control in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the move toward economic liberalization in many developing countries, a huge increase in the number of convertible currencies in the world has occurred. A key aspect of the management of these currencies involves their relationships with the world economy, which is determined partly by type of exchange rate. Contributors to this volume argue that the costs and benefits of fixed versus flexible rates vary systematically across different types of economies

The Art of .COMbat: Ancient Wisdom for the Competitive Economy
Shawn P. McCarthy , and Shawn McCarthy Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471415197 |
Amazon.com
Drawing upon classic battlefield principles first espoused more than 25 centuries ago in The Art of War, Lycos product manager Shawn McCarthy has created a contemporary framework that adapts many of its most timeless tenets for today's wired business world. McCarthy's aptly titled update, The Art of .COMbat, outlines what he describes as "an entirely new way of understanding and managing the cutthroat context of the new economy, the internal structure of the new company, the urgency of new customer demands, and the new economy's fiercely competitive climate." Divided into three sections (Basic Training, Preparation, and Going into Battle), it examines various ways that cutting-edge firms are already using the Internet successfully--and, with help from the legendary Sun Tzu, pinpoints how similar benefits might best be attained. Tying the old to the new, McCarthy discusses specifics such as trimming fat from supply chains, integrating the Internet into all activities, gaining customer loyalty by delivering value, and challenging conventional notions of time. By modifying ancient advice like "what you attack is not the enemy, but the enemy's strategy," he turns the proven wisdom on its head and makes it even more relevant for the new millennium. --Howard RothmanBook Description
A tactical field guide to the landscape of the e-business worldThe Art of .Combat examines the internal workings of both the high-tech world and the Internet business development process, providing a blueprint for navigating the complex terrain. General Sun Tzu's The Art of War for the e-business world, this handbook expands to cover things like developing online logistics to win battles, preparing long-term strategy and discovering the new goal of frictionless commerce—leveraging the Internet to squeeze out inefficiencies. Required reading for everyone making their way in the e-business world, this book is laced with tactics and real examples of strategy in action. Learn how to appraise a looming e-commerce battle through the factors of politics, climate, terrain, commander, doctrine, and vision. Irritate your opponents and find their weak points (Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems employed this tactic in his dealings with Hewlett-Packard).
The author is a great writer and business consultant who draws on his experience at Lycos and with client companies as well as interviews with industry leaders. This book will have full support from his employer, Lycos, Inc., including a Web site on the Lycos Network featuring lessons from the book.
Shawn P. McCarthy (New York, NY, and Los Angeles, CA) is a Product Manager and developer at Lycos, Inc. He also consults on Internet business development issues for Fortune 500 companies. McCarthy contributes to the Washington Post and is a regular speaker at conferences such as MacWorld, Internet World, and Comdex.

The Foreign Economic Policies of Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan
Christopher M. Dent Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1840648384 |
Book Description
Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan - East Asia's newly industrialized economies (the NIE-3) - experienced a profound development transformation over recent decades. Christopher Dent makes a comparative study of their foreign economic policies, highlighting how the NIE-3 have engaged with the international economic system in an increasingly dynamic way. The book develops a new macro-framework of foreign economic policy analysis that provides the structure for this study. The author argues that the `development context' of the NIE-3's foreign economic policies is grounded in their common development statism and semi-peripheralization. He further contends that it is the pursuit of economic security that primarily motivates their respective foreign economic policies.
This new conceptualization of economic security in the context of foreign economic policy will appeal to academics, researchers and students in a wide range of disciplines including: Asian studies, international relations, international political economy, economics and politics.

Population Matters: Demographic Change, Economic Growth, and Poverty in the Developing World
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0199261865 |
Book Description
The effect of demography on economic performance has been the subject of intense debate in economics for nearly two centuries. In recent years opinion has swung between the Malthusian views of Coale and Hoover, and the cornucopian views of Julian Simon. Unfortunately, until recently, data were too weak and analytical models too limited to provide clear insights into the relationship. As a result economists as a group have not been clear or conclusive. This volume, based on a collection of papers that heavily rely on data from the 1980s and 1990s and on new analytical approaches, sheds important new light on demographic-economic relationships, and it provides clearer policy conclusions than any recent work on the subject. In particular, evidence from developing countries throughout the world shows a much clearer pattern in recent decades than was evident earlier: countries with higher rates of population growth have tended to see less economic growth. An analysis of the role of demography in the "Asian economic miracle" strongly suggests that changes in age structures resulting from declining fertility create a one-time "demographic gift" or window of opportunity, when the working age population has relatively few dependants, of either young or old age, to support. Countries which recognize and seize on this opportunity can, as the Asian tigers did, realize healthy bursts in economic output. But such results are by no means assured: only for countries with otherwise sound economic policies will the window of opportunity yield such dramatic results. Finally, several of the studies demonstrate the likelihood of a causal relationship between high fertility and poverty. While the direction of causality is not always clear and very likely is reciprocal (poverty contributes to high fertility and high fertility reinforces poverty), the studies support the view that lower fertility at the country level helps create a path out of poverty for many families. Population Matters represents an important further step in our understanding of the contribution of population change to economic performance. As such, it will be a useful volume for policymakers both in developing countries and in international development agencies.

160 Degrees of Deviation: The Case for the Corporate Cynic

Book Description
The good intentions of corporate management are frequently undermined by 160 Degree Deviators with personal agendas who cause morale to suffer and frustration to set in. The author identifies this subculture and discusses why and how it's able to thrive.Customer Reviews:
Needed in every company in America.......2003-05-14
The author theorizes that some people are just born jerks, or become that way after exposure to other jerks. Such pompous, overbearing people should never be let anywhere near a management position. Devaitors can be of either gender, and can be found anywhere between foreman and senior management. They are preoccupied with superficial things, like the look of a report instead of what's inside. They dominate all conversations with peers and subordinates, and monopolize meetings. They rarely apologize for a mistake or false accusation, especially when it involves someone lower than them on the company totem pole. They recruit spies to feed them the latest gossip about others. Deviators will only hire or promote those who hold them in high esteem. they use a lot of possessive pronouns, like "my people" or "my department," as if a piece of the company is their personal property. In short, 160 Degree Deviators have an exaggerated sense of their own self-importance. They consider themselves the center of the universe, and expect to be treated as such. Sound familiar?
What to do about such people? It's easy to say that so-and-so is a "kook" or is thinking outside the box; tell that to their subordinates or people in other departments. At all times, challenge Deviators to put up or shut up. Meetings should be called for specific purposes with specific attendees; don't let Anyone monopolize them. People who lie or sacrifice others to cover their mistakes should be immediately dismissed. If Manager X is considered "harmless" by senior management, transfer them someplace where they will be harmless, but get them out of that management job.
This book is excellent. A copy is needed in every company in America, Fortune 500 included. The CEO who says "it doesn't happen here" needs to take a closer look at their company. It is highly recommended.
