Sights of Contestation: Localism, Globalism and Cultural Production in Asia and the Pacific
Manufacturer: The Chinese University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9622018696 |
Book Description
The fourteen essays presented in this volume examine the diverse ways in which cultural products are shaped and re-shaped in public spaces in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and some other countries in the Pacific in their continuing encounters with the forces of localism and globalism.
Various theories of globalization have been proposed since the 1970s to predict the trend of development toward homogenization and explain the tensions hitherto created. However diverse the theories may be, there is one fact that assumes the form of a challenge. As the world has become seemingly less and less divergent in its "shrinkage," the traditional categories of cultural division and opposition, such as the East versus the West, may no longer be adequate in analyzing the world we live in today. Paradoxically enough, this very shrinkage and restructuring of the world has the effect of focusing more sharply on questions of localism, identity and cultural roots. This is, in fact, a moment in history when the local and the global are co-implicated in complex and unanticipated ways.
How do cultural workers, who are primarily writers, intellectuals, journalists, filmmakers and educators, in Asia and the Pacific respond to this challenging phenomenon? How do they conceptualize it? What are the prospects and problems they foresee with regard to their own societies and cultures? These are questions of utmost significance as one seeks to come to terms with East Asia and the emerging Pacific as a space of contestation and resistance in the global/local process of cultural production. The fourteen essays collected in this book certainly represent the views of some of the prominent scholars in the region.

The End of Affluence: The Causes and Consequences of America's Economic Dilemma
Jeff Madrick Manufacturer: Random House ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0375750339 Release Date: 1997-09-23 |
Book Description
Sure to spark controversy, this book, reminiscent of the bestsellers Politics of Rich and Poor and Day of Reckoning, tells the real truth about America's long term economic decline--what caused it, what it has done to Americans, and what Americans should do about it.Customer Reviews:
Strong Reporting on an Important Issue.......2000-04-29
Madrick begins by noting that since the early 1970's the US has been in the doldrums economically; starting in 1973, the long-term economic growth rate fell by over 1% annually (contrary to the previous reviewer, this is still the case). Madrick notes many of the consequences of this slowdown. He contrasts the present period with the rapid growth of the past in a concise but informative review of US economic history--this segment by itself makes the book worth reading.
Madrick then turns to what he sees as the main cause of the slowdown. As European and Japanese firms adopted American methods of mass production and distribution, this increased international competition eroded much of the US's long-standing advantages. The slowness of US firms, such as the automakers, to adopt new methods of flexible production, and the lagging rate of US capital investment, further aggravated this trend. A major consequence of this trend has been a sharp decline in the availability of well-paying jobs for those without college degrees.
Madrick criticizes the "misplaced optimism" of those who see our problems as minor or readily solved. He critiques some alternative explanations for the growth slowdown, such as our allegedly insufficient savings rate and supposed "skills shortage." While he offers little in the way of specific solutions, he does give a solid refutation of the Republican Party's ever-resurrected "solution" of yet one more round of supply-side, trickle-down tax cuts.
Madrick's analysis is often solid, but he falls short in two respects. First, he is too focused on a single explanation for our "end of affluence," international competition, and neglects other factors that also are important--the collapse of the labor movement comes to mind as one. Second, his vision is centered too narrowly on GDP and related economic measures, and so neglects issues like environmental degradation, which are of considerable importance, but are not captured in convential economic statistics.
While Madrick's story is an incomplete one, his superb reporting makes his book, even though it is somewhat dated, worthwhile reading.

Slow Economic Growth: The End of Social Mobility.......1999-12-31
Madrick tells of America's second frontier of mass production which had once given the U.S. a great competitive advantage: having the operating experience to produce large qualities at a small enough unit price and distribute it over the nation's large consumer base -- which is unparalleled in the world. While American businesses were caught up in a paradigm of mass production of standardized products with broad marketing, the rest of the world began systems of flexible production of specialized products, produced for narrower markets. This coupled with the reduction of trade barriers and the ease of entrance into U.S. markets created competition that American companies had never before experienced, and were unprepared for. As their corporate paradigm shifted, and companies began to realize that what had once been was no longer, they reacted by trying to compete through reducing costs-- such as reducing labor or wages-- rather than focusing on increasing their productivity. Corporate America's failure to adapt to the changing market conditions, essentially caused an economic retreat in industries where American companies felt they couldn't compete -- most noticeably in manufacturing. Madrick presents a model which represents the cyclical decline created by the internationalization and fragmentation of markets which create cost cutting and lower wages, which further creates uncertainty, which creates weak investment, which leads to lower productivity and more lost jobs, then reduced consumption which compounds the slow growth, which only starts the cycle of cost cutting once again.
All in all, Madrick has written an excellent book that is easy and enjoyable to read.

A handbook of how to sell respectfully and ethically.......2004-06-11
Therefore, it's always nice to recommend a resource that can improve the selling experience for both seller and buyer. I recommend a few such books in the Principled Pro fit bibliography, which is now posted on the website. And I'm always glad to find more.
Lee Godden sent me a copy of his new book, ZenWise Selling, and he's clearly based in exactly that kind of wisdom. He espouses a gentle, mindful selling orientation that replaces the aggressive hard sell. Instead, he suggests really listing, ethical behavior, and accepting the ups and downs of the process as a keen observer of the world, as opposed to as someone who gets bent out of shape by every little setback.
Godden is a Zen practitioner, and there's certainly quite a bit about meditative techniques and general Zen practices, as well as a nice little history of Zen at the end of the book. But he isn't preachy, and even if you don't see yourself meditating, there's much here that will be useful and practical for anyone in sales.
And actually, while reading this book, I had an emergency root canal on one of my teeth. I let Lee's message flow over me, and achieved a meditative state in the dentist's chair that made the procedure a lot less painful, and the recovery a lot faster, than it might have been.
Confidently recommended as a superbly balanced work.......2004-01-12
At peace with sales in a high pressure world.......2003-12-10
One of the most important points of the book besides establishing this internal peace is to approach each sales opportunity from a fresh viewpoint with no preconceptions. This allows an honest relationship to develop between the customer and salesperson and a true partnership. This is selling with integrity at it's best. "Zen Wise Selling" is not a sales techniques book but a book on the foundation that underlies all relationships, including sales. The information in sales techniques books can then be applied to this foundation. Sell more, less stress, more peace, achieve the Zen of selling. "Zen Wise Selling" is a highly recommended book.

Book Description
The Comprehensive Development Framework (CDF)-launched by World Bank President James D. Wolfensohn in early 1999-has become an important influence on the global development agenda. The CDF consists of four principles - a Long-Term, Holistic Development Framework; Results Orientation; Country Ownership; and Country Led-Partnership. These core principles are not new individually, but bringing them together as a unified concept and championing the package within the global development community has been an important innovation. This evaluation, conducted by multi-disciplinary teams with members from developed and developing countries, shows that both donors and recipients have made progress in implementing the CDF principles, particularly in countries where one or more of the principles have been applied over a number of years. However, these positive changes are fragile and could be stalled or reversed. Implementing the principles requires changes in entrenched behaviors and institutional practices. Thus, dedicated and consistent attention is needed by top donor leadership and recipient countries to ensure that momentum is sustained.

Managing the Global: Globalization, Employment and Quality of Life (Human Security and Global Governance)
Manufacturer: I. B. Tauris ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1860647065 |
Book Description
We live in a "global village" (McLuhan), a "post-industrial" (Bell) and an "information society" (Porat). Others have suggested that this is the age of the "end of history" (Fukuyama). But other experts suggest that we live in an era called the "beginning of history", when for the first time, over two-thirds of humanity can claim the right to be history's subject and not its object. The contributors show, even the global villages of Coca-Cola, Hilton, and McDonalds hide a different reality: globalization and tribalization, they demonstrate, are two sides of the same coin.

Biodiversity Loss: Economic and Ecological Issues
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521588669 |
Book Description
This important book reports the findings of a research program that brought together economists and ecologists to consider the causes and consequences of biodiversity loss. It shows that while the immediate causes of biodiversity loss lie in habitat destruction and harvesting, the underlying causes are incentives that encourage resource users to ignore the effects of their actions. These effects include both loss of genetic material, and the collapse of ecosystem resilience--our "insurance" against the fundamental uncertain effects of economic and population growth. The "solutions" are argued to lie in the reform of incentives.

Trafficking in Persons: Prosecution from a European Perspective
Conny Rijken Manufacturer: Asser Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 906704167X |
Book Description
The crime of trafficking in persons is being increasingly committed in an international context and many of the problems in prosecuting this crime are aggravated by the fact that more than one state is involved. National criminal laws are not sufficient to prosecute and to combat it adequately. As a transnational crime, solutions for an effective prosecution should be sought beyond national borders. This publication will provide an initial impetus for an approach at the EU level to prosecute trafficking in persons more effectively, based on the concept of regional jurisdiction. Recently developed instruments and initiatives within the EU, such as the European Arrest Warrant, Eurojust and a European Public Prosecutor, are also covered in this book. The final conclusion that can be drawn is that, for the moment, a dual track should be followed in order to prosecute the trafficking in persons more effectively.

The End of Selling...as We Know It: An Executive's Guide to Customer Creation

Buy one (today) for every member of your sales staff.......2001-04-25
Now, Welke gives us insight into what drives a user to license a software product or suite, and provides a roadmap for the sellers and buyers to meet for their common good.
If you are in sales or marketing, and enjoyed Spencer Johnson's Who Moved My Cheese, you must get this book. It brings home all of the sales issues you have been striving to corral. It's a quick read, yet you'll thank Larry for years ... as have the titans of the software industry.
Welke Continues Icon-Busting Selling Ideas.......2001-04-17
Welke, a 1954 graduate of Marquette University (Economics), went to work for IBM after a short stint with General Electric. IBM, perhaps the greatest marketing machine of the last half of the 20th century, gave Welke lessons both in what to do and, as it faltered in the personal computer business, not to do. Over seven years he became a top salesman by, among other things, courting clients in chauffeur-driven Jaguars, a practice that won business but drove the image-conscious IBM hierarchy nuts.
Welke left IBM and, in 1967, formed his own company, International Computer Programs, Inc., the first software information company anywhere. During his three decades at the helm of ICP, he taught sales training to hundreds of aspiring software salespersons around the world. Early on the challenge was one every new software merchant stumbled over but which Welke relished: How do you persuade businesses that were used to getting their software free -- just thrown in with the hardware they bought -- to start paying serious money for it?
That Welke's seminars and publications had the answer gave him the appellation "Father of the Software Industry" (the independent software industry went from $300 million in sales when he joined it to around a hundred billion today). It also gave him a reputation as a rogue marketer with some compelling ideas, which is why his sales training seminars continue to sell out to this day.
The essential point of "The End of Selling..." is that changes in exposure media -- principally the Internet -- have fundamentally altered the way a sale is done, contact to contract. It altered the way clients first hear about a product, learn more about it, explore its viability in their context, make sales contacts, and even pay for and deliver it. Beyond that it affects the way customers are supported, complaints are handled, products are critiqued, new versions are developed, and hands are held.
The failures of the dot coms, he believes, stems from the inability of the mostly youthful entrepreneurs to merge their new-century automated sites with a little last-century humanity. (Imagine a prospective customer, money in hand, lost in an HTML maze that cannot answer the one question he has that would close the sale for him.)
Welke believes that the Internet and other interactive media will fulfil their promise once entrepreneurs (and established merchants just getting into the new media) forget selling as they once knew it (20th century) and as they think they know it now (21st century), and merge the two into a symbiosis he calls "customer creation."
The best way to think of customer creation is to imagine that the up-close selling of knocking on sequential doors to introduce yourself has been replaced with technology that can introduce you to literally scores of millions more prospects. But having made that introduction, those prospects need to be addressed not in a single rigid manner adopted by the company (a formula Web site), but in the manner in which THEY wish to be individually addressed (and, ultimately, sold). That would include a flexible system of technology-based marketing mixed with an informed support staff of living people who are easily contacted.
There is much more to customer creation that we can outline here, but suffice it to say that Welke has a lot of experience with the concept and a lot of fun sharing it. His decades in sales, marketing and chief executive offices give him a long view too many other authors lack. "The End of Selling..." will take you off auto-pilot and make you think.
What an eye opener!.......2001-04-12

The text serves as an overview for critical issues in marketing management. Its brief, inexpensive, paperback format makes it a perfect fit for instructors who assign cases, readings, simulations or offer modules on marketing management for MBA students. The text also works in courses that implement a cross-functional curriculum where the students are required to purchase several texts.Customer Reviews:
