State Resistance to Globalisation in Cuba

In a world dominated by neo-liberal globalization, Cuba stands apart as a tiny enclave of resistance to the free market economy. Its success -- in the face of massive opposition from the US and the apparent triumph of neoliberalism worlwide -- is remarkable.

This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the ways in which the government and the people of Cuba have actively resisted neo-liberal globalisation. The author challenges those on the Left who romantically support the Cuban Revolution as well as those who claim that the free market is the ideal economic model for all states. Instead, he presents an intelligent account of the serious and contradictory consequences of Cuba's social, political and economic restructuring.

How is it that the Cuban Communist Party continues to exist? To what extent is Cuba affected by global trends and pressures? The author revisits the history of the Cuban Revolution, and the crisis after the fall of Cuba's superpower ally, the Soviet Union, to provide answers to these questions.

This book clearly explains the survival of the
Cuban revolution and its party-state apparatus
during the special period of the 1990s and today.
It is historically correct, timely and very sympathetic to
the PCC's sincere efforts in opposing
neoliberal globalisation. Carmona forces
romatic supporters of socialist Cuba to make
a reality check: the forces imposing upon the
state in the global south are real and the
consequences are serious, that even an anti-imperialist
state with socialist discourse (like Cuba)
has a hard time resisting. Carmona is all about
constructive criticism. I disagree with Will Podmore,
this is not an attack on Cuba, and there isn't
a Communist in Cuba who would make these accusations.
The reference to a "decentralised bureaucratic state
capitalism" was rhetorical, alluding to a problem
on the left with their hang-ups on names.
Carmona clearly goes beyond the name calling
and digs deep into real structures and current
modes of production. Besides, Will, you got his
name wrong...it's Carmona Baez (Carmona for short),
not Baez. No other author has dared to confront
the benefits AND the contradictions produced by
Cuba's new economic model.

Leftist attack on socialist Cuba.......2004-04-27

Baez starts his study of Cuba's economy with his conclusion, that the Soviet Union and Cuba show that state capitalism is the only successful form of resistance to capitalism. He bases this conclusion on the ideas of the deservedly forgotten thinkers of the 1930s Frankfurt School, who, Baez thinks, somehow proved that present-day Cuba is a `decentralised bureaucratic state capitalism' run by a `new class' that exploits workers just as capitalism does.

His conclusion plays into the hands of those who would isolate and destroy socialist Cuba. Why should Cuba's workers, and the workers of other nations, support a `decentralised bureaucratic state capitalism'?

After reaching his conclusion, he looks at the evidence. He shows that even during the 1990s, after Bush's man Yeltsin ended all Russia's contracts with Cuba, Cuba strengthened its state enterprises and increased its welfare spending. Since 1996 Cuba has achieved economic growth of 4.6% a year. It has 100% primary school enrolment (better than the USA), no homelessness, no illiteracy, and more doctors per head than any other country in the world.

The Cuban Medical Collaboration works in 62 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. Since the Ernesto Che Guevara Cuban Medical Brigade arrived in Haiti in 1999, it has saved 81,856 lives. Baez acknowledges that Cuba has kept state supremacy over market forces, the unity of its political forces, popular participation, and continued commitment to the ideas of anti-imperial resistance, national sovereignty and emancipation.

But all these, according to Baez's theoretical model, can be achieved under (state) capitalism. If capitalism can do all this, it must be very good: who would need socialism?

Baez's book demeans and devalues Cuba, a socialist country that is a remarkable example both of workers' nationalism and of internationalism. We should follow Cuba's example and create a society based on national sovereignty and genuine international solidarity.

George Gordon Coughlin, Jr. is the author of YOUR HANDBOOK OF EVERYDAY LAW, 5th ed. This informative book not only has descriptions of the different types of law, but it also includes a glossary as well as helpful tables such as state time limitations for the start of tort actions. What caught my eye about this legal reference book is the conciseness and easy-to-understand descriptions of what any layperson needs to know about various aspects of the law. The entries are not intimidating whatsoever, which gives the book an accommodating feel to anyone who picks it up as a reference. If there is one criticism of the book, it would have to be whether or not the information/cases/tables are updated. The copyright date of the book is 1993. What I would like to know is if the author is going to be publishing another edition in the very near future. If so, that book will definitely be referred to as well.

Your Handbook ... is good book if you do not know anything about the law. It includes 30 chapters dealing with Civil and Criminal Procedure to Environmental Law, and everything in between. However, it should be noted that it has a very general approach to the subjects it covers. Over all, its a fine book for people trying to understand the basics of law.

Current thinking in evolutionary biology holds that competition among individuals is the key to understanding natural selection. When competition exists, it is obvious that conflict arises; the emergence of cooperation, however, is less straightforward and calls for in-depth analysis. Much research is now focused on defining and expanding the evolutionary models of cooperation. Understanding the mechanisms of cooperation has relevance for fields other than biology. Anthropology, economics, mathematics, political science, primatology, and psychology are adopting the evolutionary approach and developing analogies based on it. Similarly, biologists use elements of economic game theory and analyze cooperation in "evolutionary games." Despite this, exchanges between researchers in these different disciplines have been limited. Seeking to fill this gap, the 90th Dahlem Workshop was convened. This book, which grew out of that meeting, addresses such topics as emotions in human cooperation, reciprocity, biological markets, cooperation and conflict in multicellularity, genomic and intercellular cooperation, the origins of human cooperation, and the cultural evolution of cooperation; the emphasis is on open questions and future research areas. The book makes a significant contribution to a growing process of interdisciplinary cross-fertilization on this issue.

If you want to cooperate...........2004-04-24

Evolutionary theory has stressed competition, but cooperation is incredibly common in nature. Mitochondria, originally bacterial infections of cells, are now essential components of cells. Most plants depend on fungal associates to help them get water and nutrients. Social animals abound at all levels of complexity. Most complexly social of all are humans. Until recently, this widespread mutualism, mutual aid, and general sociability was understudied and undertheorized. This book is a major step toward creating theories of how such systems can have arisen in a competitive world. I am not competent to judge the papers on mitochondria and other cell-level wonders, but the other papers are authoritative and original. The studies of human society and cooperation are absolutely brilliant, and put together new and powerful theories of the evolution of human cooperation. The political implications of these theories are alluded to, but not discussed in depth. Basically, humans are designed to be grassroots cooperators. We have a range of mechanisms to regulate society, detect and sanction cheaters, discuss how to maintain the system, and so on and on, and most of these abilities have roots well back in our primate heritage. The idea that people are selfish, including Thomas Hobbes' fantasy of "savages" living in a "warre of each against all" until a king shaped things up, does not stand investigation. Impressive in this book is new evidence from behavioral economics showing just how cooperative people are, and new models that can deal with that in terms of evolutionary and economic theory. Somebody should get a Nobel in economics somewhere along the line!
I fear only that ordinary readers and the popular media will not find this book; it is formidably difficult reading--you have to know biology, anthropology, theoretical economics, and even cell physiology to get through all of it. Help! I hope somebody is writing a popular knockoff, to counter the idiotic garbage put out by those who have confused political ideology with evolutionary theory and given us floods of nonsense about the "selfish gene," the impossibility of social cooperation, the naturalness of selfishness, and even the biological inevitability of rape and spouse abuse!
In any case, this book puts the study of cooperation on a sounder scientific footing. We need social applications, before it is too late.

Good even for the non-lawyer.......2006-03-26

I read this book to acquaint myself with the basic concepts in securities regulation. The book provides coverage with an ample number of major topics, which I found fairly interesting. I have a finance background, and this book provided me with how the law perceives securities. It is also helpful in understanding what documents and requirement a company and its officers must follow to comply with securities laws in different transactions. I would recommend this book for people that do not have the time to read thick law books on securities regulation or are not aspiring lawyers. The discussion in this text is clear and sufficient to gain a basic understanding of securities laws.

Comprehensive Review of the 1930's.......2001-03-31

Ellis kept a running diary for most of his adult life. He culls much interesting information from this source as well as several better known authors in painting a vivid picture of what happened in America starting in 1929 and why. This is not to say that the book does not have some flaws. For one thing Ellis has a tendency of placing trivial comments such as "Rexford Tugwell was quite the handsomest New Dealer of them all" which frankly could have been better left unsaid. However, some of his historical information, particularly his chapter on the National Recovery Act, entitled the Blue Eagle, are well researched and very easy to read. I also like the opening chapter on the death of the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel (now the site of the Empire State Building). This is an excellent juxtaposition considering that this event took place in the infamous year of 1929 and happened on May Day to boot.

The upcoming enlargement of the European Union by ten countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEEC) and the Baltics as well as by Cyprus and Malta, with Turkey also having been given an opening for eventual EU membership, is of great historical significance. In addition to the question of what will it take for EU candidate countries to get ready for EU accession is the question of whether the EU is itself ready to receive the EU candidate countries. "" These questions are addressed in this report. Section 2 discusses the progress made by the CEECs in their overlapping transition and EU accession processes. The process of EU accession is helping the economic transition of these countries, but only if they have been undertaking the necessary economic, political, and institutional reforms at the same time. Section 3 discusses the per capita income distance between the CEECs and the EU, and what it takes for real convergence. Section 4 discusses some key policy issues facing the CEECs for successful integration. These are: 1) addressing the fiscal challenge, taking into account hidden deficits and contingent liabilities; 2) addressing the challenge of global financial integration; 3) strengthening administrative capacity; and 4) raising the living standards for groups at risk.
